8-Year-Old Inspires Protests After Radical Jews Call Her a ‘Whore,’ Spit on Her

Naama Margolese Inspires Protests Against Ultra Orthodox Extremism in Israel

BEIT SHEMESH, Israel (The Blaze/AP) — A shy 8-year-old schoolgirl has unwittingly found herself on the front line of Israel’s latest religious war.

Naama Margolese is a ponytailed, bespectacled second-grader who is afraid of walking to her religious Jewish girls school for fear of ultra-Orthodox extremists who have spat on her and called her a whore for dressing “immodestly.”

Her plight has drawn new attention to the simmering issue of religious coercion in Israel, and the increasing brazenness of extremists in the insular ultra-Orthodox Jewish community. The Blaze first mentioned Naama over the weekend, when we reported about a television news crew that was attacked by these same extremists.

“When I walk to school in the morning I used to get a tummy ache because I was so scared … that they were going to stand and start yelling and spitting,” the pale, blue-eyed girl said softly in an interview with The Associated Press Monday. “They were scary. They don’t want us to go to the school.”

The girls school that Naama attends in the city of Beit Shemesh, to the west of Jerusalem, is on the border between an ultra-Orthodox neighborhood and a community of modern Orthodox Jewish residents, many of them American immigrants.

The ultra-Orthodox consider the school, which moved to its present site at the beginning of the school year, an encroachment on their territory. Dozens of black-hatted men jeer and physically accost the girls almost daily, claiming their very presence is a provocation.

Beit Shemesh has long experienced friction between the ultra-Orthodox, who make up about half the city’s population, and other residents. And residents say the attacks at the girls’ school, attended by about 400 students, have been going on for months. Last week, after a local TV channel reported about the school and interviewed Naama’s family, a national uproar ensued.

The televised images of Naama sobbing as she walked to school shocked many Israelis, elicited statements of outrage from the country’s leadership, sparked a Facebook page with nearly 10,000 followers dedicated to “protecting little Naama” and plans for a demonstration later Tuesday in her honor. As the case has attracted attention, extremists have heckled and thrown eggs and rocks at journalists descending on town.

“Who’s afraid of an 8-year-old student?” said Sunday’s main headline in the leading Yediot Ahronot daily.

Beit Shemesh’s growing ultra-Orthodox population has erected street signs calling for the separation of sexes on the sidewalks, dispatched “modesty patrols” to enforce a chaste female appearance and hurled stones at offenders and outsiders. Walls of the neighborhood are plastered with signs exhorting women to dress modestly in closed-necked, long-sleeved blouses and long skirts.

Naama’s case has been especially shocking because of her young age and because she attends a religious school and dresses with long sleeves and a skirt. Extremists, however, consider even that outfit, standard in mainstream Jewish religious schools, to be immodest.

Thousands of people were expected at Tuesday evening’s demonstration. Ahead of the gathering, President Shimon Peres urged the public to attend.

“The demonstration today is a test for the people and not just the police,” Peres told a gathering of Israeli ambassadors. “All of us … must defend the image of the state of Israel from a minority that is destroying national solidarity and expressing itself in an infuriating way.”

The abuse and segregation of women in Israel in ultra-Orthodox areas is nothing new, and critics accuse the government of turning a blind eye.

The ultra-Orthodox are perennial king-makers in Israeli coalition politics – two such parties serve as key members of the ruling coalition. They receive generous government subsidies, and police have traditionally been reluctant to enter their communities.

The ultra-Orthodox Jews make up 10 percent of Israel’s population and are its fastest growing sector because of a high birth rate. In the past, they have generally confined their strict lifestyle to their own neighborhoods. But they have become increasingly aggressive in trying to impose their ways on others, as their population has grown and spread to new areas.

“It is clear that Israeli society is faced with a challenge that I am not sure it can handle,” said Menachem Friedman, a professor emeritus of Bar Ilan University and expert on the ultra-Orthodox, “a challenge that is no less and no more than an existential challenge.”

Most of Israel’s secular majority, in cities like Tel Aviv and Haifa, is not directly affected, but in a few places like Beit Shemesh – a city of 100,000 people that include ultra-Orthodox, modern Orthodox and secular Jews – tensions have erupted into the open.

Naama Margolese Inspires Protests Against Ultra Orthodox Extremism in Israel

Last week, a young Israeli woman caused a nationwide uproar when she refused a religious man’s order to move to the back of a bus.

In Beit Shemesh, parents in Naama’s school take turns escorting their daughters into school property to protect them. The parents, too, have been cursed and spat upon.

Hadassa Margolese, Naama’s 30-year-old Chicago-born mother, an Orthodox Jew who covers her hair and wears long sleeves and a long skirt, says, “It shouldn’t matter what I look like. Someone should be allowed to walk around in sleeveless shirts and pants and not be harassed.”

City spokesman Matityahu Rosenzweig condemned the violence but said it is the work of a small minority and has been taken out of proportion. “Every society has its fringes, and the police should take action on this,” he said.

JTA has more about a Tuesday evening rally that’s set to protest against these startling developments:

Thousands are expected to participate in a rally in the Jerusalem suburb of Beit Shemesh against women’s exclusion and violence against females by haredi Orthodox men.

The rally is set to be held Tuesday evening near a national religious girls school which has been at the center of the controversy. [...]

The rally was organized on Facebook. More than 4,000 users have already responded on the Hebrew Facebook page, “1,000 Israelis are going to Beit Shemesh to protect little Na’ama” that they will be attending. Some 10,000 people are expected to participate.

For Margolese, the recent clashes – and the price of exposing her young daughter – boil down to a fight over her very home.

“They want to push us out of Beit Shemesh. They want to take over the city,” said Margolese.

There’s an interesting nugget of information.

It is possible the Israeli Leftists, Secularists and media are exploiting this situation [girl] to go after supporters of Netanyahu in an effort to unbalance him and his party.
Even Obama/Clinton want “Regime Change” in Israel, and all that “Arab Spring” the Israelis experienced with the Social Justice marches/protests earlier this year is all connected with what’s happening now in Beit Shemesh.
Israel had better be careful. . .
Wasn’t the Second Temple destroyed because of “two Jews arguing?”
Then again, sometimes even the haredi are wrong.

Actually, I would take this as the number one flaw in the Israeli political system. Israel is a Parliamentary Democracy. After each election, no single party has a majority. To decide on who the Prime Minister will be, the party leaders with the most seats will seek to “gain the support” of other parties to form a coalition. Methods of persuasion include offering certain subsidies, granting cabinet positions, and agreeing on certain policies. The extreme religious parties often cast the deciding vote in each case.

I seem to remember Glenn once talking about this. In many ways the system promotes corruption and fails to separate powers. America’s system (in its proper form) works infinitely better.

One thing to note is that Jews are protesting against the ill treatment of this innocent child. A lot of the trolls here fail to watch or read the entire story. It is time for this particular Orthodox sect, and I mean this with respect, to reform. Children are not to be shamed like this. These are your neighbors. Shame on you.

Let me be very clear. My support of the jewish people is because of my perception of them as a good and kind people. I have met many who are but this nonsense of spitting on little girls will get them all shoved in ovens next time. I grew up in a place that really didn’t know what Jews were until my teens and i formed my own opinion once i met some. I will stand with israel when the time comes but thewy need to realize that it is this extreme view that has gotten them hunted down and killed everywhere they are chased to. It is not just a jew vs jew attitude. Any that enter these areas are subject to abuse by this particular group. They are as dangerously zealoted as any muslim group. It is this mentality that makes them hated by most of the uncivilized world. They hide behind safe walls provided by people that they would spit on and call immoral. When the boundaries are redrawn the muslims can have them. I will not stand with those that would toss rocks at my head and spit on me while i fend off their real enemies. I have no love for them any more than i do the KKK and their stupid views. Trash is trash, take it out.

In response to ZengaPA65, Christians have not been at war against Islam for hundreds of years. The Muslim persons and Nations are still living in the Dark Ages and feel compelled to bring about their own version of Armageddon and the “3rd Imam”. Whether you believe that or not, THEY DO. We defended them in Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Kuwait and many other places and their response was to attack civilians on American soil. They should be shouting our praises, not spreading lies like you do.

Ok let‘s get some details cleared up that the blaze didn’t get from repeating the Israeli news sources.
      1. The Haredi ( ultra orthodox) community as a whole DOES NOT in any way think that spitting on aany way condone demeaning another person especially a child because of thier dress.
2.Within the community there is a very small fringe group of peoplewho unfortumatwly do not umderstand that while modesty is a good thing, it can’t be enfourced by treating someone badly. The personust choose for themselves to dress modestly.
      3. While this might not make sense to someone unfamiliar with the jewish relogous law, there is a concept of not mixing men and women together. This is not because women are subservient to men,Judaism doesnt say that. Rather it is a fence to protect each other from even the temptaion of promicuity. Jews believe the only members of the opposite sex you should have physical contact with is either your spouse, children,or grandparents. When people get married it is a holy union and there is sanctity there. The buses that are being commented on are a private lin for that section of the city, and the peolple choose to be seperated. It bears no resmblence to segregation.
The thing is that the left wing im Israel wants to bring down Bibi and the religous parties are in his coaltion. So they are using the left wing media to invent a contraversey to drive a wedge in the coalition, and at the same time malign the observant jews. Just like here the left uses hard

I was thinking the same thing myself. Jewish people should be the most tolerant of others, no matter how they dress, think or believe. On the belief part, they should not be tolerant of those who wish to destroy their country. One would think that they would remember their own history and remember what this kind of unreasonable hate brought about for them.

As a Jew familiar with this sect, the answer o your question is no. The only difference is one of degree and, if this story is any indication, that degree is shrinking. These people used to be isolationists but this goes far beyond that. Other incidents include Ultra-Orthodox meeting with the Iranian President, calling for Israel’s destruction, and cursing (real cursing) Israeli officials who offer to give up land.

I seem to recall Him describing himself as extremely patient and merciful to Moses when He revealed His glory.

Amazing to me. One report about a fringe, extremist element within the hareidi community, and an even teenier slice of the Jewish people as a whole and the antisemitic (Judeophobic) elements come crawling out from under their slimey rocks to express their vitriol, not against those specific peopple who perpetrate these acts, but against the Jewish people in general…or the “Orthodox” in general. Likening us to Jihadi extremists?!? Really? (I won’t paint with a broad brush re Muslims…)

Did the non-Jewish world think all Jews are perfect? And when we prove otherwise, that we have problematic people within our ranks just like any other people…the nasty comments I read below this piece is what we can expect, even from some who claim to be our friends?.

Be careful people. The Middle East is a complex place. There are elements within Israeli society that are trying to paint the entire hareidi community (what this article refers to as “ultra-Orthodox”, which in itself is an insulting term) with a broad brush and they are doing so for political reasons, often because the hareidi community takes a strong stand against giving land to the enemies of the Jewish people — for any reason.

I myself am not hareidi but I have hareidi friends, some to whom I am very close. By and large, this is a lovely community, made up of the most kind, respectful people I’ve ever met, really the salt of the earth. They are embarrassed by the behavior of these few.

I am a bit curious. When Rabbi Yosefs answers a question posed to him” that if the gentiles are not obligated in all of the lawsa that jews are how can a gentile gain eternal life?”
And Rabbi Yosef answers ” that gentileswhile gentiles aren‘t obligated to keep all the laws that doesn’tema they don’t aquire eternal life, they get merit to gain eternal life by all of the services they do that makes it easier for Jews to observe.” So that gets misinterpreted to mean that they serve jews, that is not what it means. It means that for instance a truck driver delivers mmilk to a store which means that instead of having to milk a cow himself a person can just go to the corner store and buy it, since he saved the jew all of that time and effort which gave the jew more time to serve G-d, this truckdriver gained eternal reward even though his intent was to drive a truck amd make money, since this helped a jew G-d rewards him for that service that is what he means by serve jews.”
As opposed to just about every other religon including probably your own that would require a person who would want to go to heaven adopt that religons belief. For instance Chrisiaity says that only by accepting Jesus can someone go to heaven. Or islam that only by accepting islam can one go to paradise. Rabbi Yosef says that in Judaism you can worship as you are and by just doing your job as a truck driver a gentile can go to heaven.

      Seems pretty tolerant to me.

Appearantly, mankind hadn’t learned the ultimate lesson upon which Eve had suffered as she was confounded by Satan in the Garden of Eden. He had offered her to become as God, to know good and bad. Obviously, man is still practicing this notion and expressing his illusion of power through 10′s of 1,000′s of man made churches. You’ve hit the nail on the head. They aren’t keeping to themselves anymore. And yes they do exert a lot of influence on the government. This exposes the flaws of Parliamentarian governments that fail to separate powers. The religious party’s support is almost always necessary for one party to be able to receive the office of Prime Minister. They’ll never run the country but they can cut deals with those who do.

      Biddle:

      Learn some Second Temple history.

When Jesus says “scribes & pharisees“ he is not referring to ”pharisee party” who were much beloved by the people. In fact Hayim Maccoby, a scholar of the period, believes Jesus himself was a pharisee. The pharisee party was patriotic and looking forward to the liberation of their people from the yoke of Rome…who was actively involved in preventing the people from observing the Torah, much like what the Greeks had done under Antiochus Ephiphanes of Chanukah fame.

The pharisees can be likened in some ways to the Tea Party in America. The “scribes & pharisees”, when mentioned together by Jesus were a group consisting of sadduccees and a small number of co-opted pharisees who had abandoned their fellow pharisees in favor of the good life. It was tough to be a true pharisee back then. They were often hunted, tortured and then murdered by their Roman overlords. In contrast, the “scribes & pharisees” were co-opted elitist leaders who had turned their back their people in favor of influence, profit and position. This group, sadduccees and the small number of corrupted pharisees who had joined the sadducean cause were on the take…very wealthy and not committed to either their duties to G-d or the Jewish people.

And that is why Jesus had few good words to say to them. According to gospel accounts though, he did manage to dine with pharisees, most of whom were true. One needs to read with political nuances in mind.

I stand with the Othodox Jew on this one. Women need to follow God’s word and dress modestly like the Holy Spirit encourages you to do. They have their own hospitals, schools, buses and it is mostly taxpayer funded. Most of the families are on welfare and have 5 or more kids, the others work in the diamond district? The real kicker is, when you are entering the village of KJ, there is a giant sign that gives the village rules which consist of: “Gender separation at all times, long dresses past the knees for girls”, among other rules such as no loud music or sagging pants. The other thing is most of the Orthodox Jews are rude as any people I’ve known This is in the USA too.
