8-Year-Old’s iPad App Helps Catch Burglar of at Least Two Thefts

Tennessee Third Grader Uses iPad App to Catch Burglar

Landon Crabtree

Like any other 8-year-old who is fortunate enough to own an iPad — or have access to mom and dad’s — Landon Crabtree downloaded gaming apps like “Temple Run,“ ”Pet Shop Story,“ and ”Minecraft.” What may set the Tennessee third-grader apart though is a tracking app he downloaded and has since used to help lead authorities to the suspected burglar of at least two robberies.

According to the Tennessean, Crabtree’s family home was robbed and his iPad was among the many items stolen. The tech-savvy boy said he got on YouTube to learn how to use the app to locate his iPad. When he did, it was only four miles away:

“It’s a different generation,” said Landon’s father, Richard, who was, no doubt, surprised and then delighted by his son’s cleverness. “I never knew something like this existed, and I never thought my 8-year-old would figure out how to download it and come down and tell me this is where our stuff is.”

The iPad app lead police to the Ambassador Inn Motel in Manchester, according to the Tennessean, where John Docherty, 46, was found with many stolen items, including some from at least one other robbery of a Franklin apartment complex. Docherty matched a sketch artist’s rendition of the robber described in the Franklin burglary.

The Tennessean reports that while Docherty is being held at the Coffee County jail, police are looking into other burglaries in the area to see if there are further connections.

My almost six year old daughter can navigate her way around, not only her Ipad, but also my computer. I didn’t teach her (refused to in fact, in a vain attempt to protect my gear), she taught herself through trial and error while I wasn’t looking.

It’s a new world out there and we are old geezers.

HOWEVER did anyone get a bit freaked out knowing that the feds or someone who DOES know how to use this technology can go after YOU or your family?

just saying – sweet story but you have to be kidding me on the whole GPS deal man. turn that stuff off. Don’t help the 3 letter alphabet gang. sheesh.

iOS now has a feature built in (it’s part of iCloud) “Find My iPhone/iPad/Macintosh/iPod’” depending on the device.
You enable it in settings, in iCloud settings.
Then you can go online whenever you want to, log in with your user ID and find out where your device is.
You can also opt to share your location with other individuals that you specify.

That was a good thing to put out on the web! But they didn’t name the app or how to download it! But on the 27th there was another app that should not have been put out right down to the prosess for use of your Cell being used to unlock your car! Now that is a dangerous App to put out and I hope there weren‘t to many car theif’s Surfing at that time! I wonder if they can track down the iresponseble person who posted it and give them a good tough Lashing!

Hey, Blaze, get an editor. “Lead” is the metal. “Led” is the past tense of “to lead.” If seen this mistake often in your articles.
