Posted on September 2, 2010 at 4:46pmI was just playing a love song on the trumpet before I logged on here. This story is not the only one of the power of music to transcend even the enmity of war.
This soldier, by playing that evocative German tune, brought that German’s mind around to the things that really mattered in his life, and he realized that dying for Hitler wasn’t even close to the top of the list. He could see American and British forces pouring into the beachheads and increasing their strength by the hour and knew he’d be one of the lucky ones if he made it back across the Rhine.
So he did the right thing and surrendered, and lived to have a family and love them and do the things that matter in life. Who knows what would have happened without that little song? He might have shot a few more ‘enemy’ soldiers, then been shot himself.
I love this story.

Posted on September 2, 2010 at 1:48pmGod bless our troops who go into harms way when our nation calls them to duty! God bless the families they leave behind to hold the fort. May we never forget the great sacrifice each of them give. Let us not be distracted by the few who bring shame to our armed forces. Thank you for fighting for us!

Posted on September 2, 2010 at 1:11pmAn elderly gentleman came in “The Keystone Armory”, Edinboro, Pa., the other day. We got to talking and he said that he was with the 82nd Airborne during WWII and had made 3 of the 4 combat jumps the 82nd had made during WWII. I could have spent the rest of the day with him if his daughter wasn’t in a hurry to leave. These veterans are the true hero we need to look up to.

Posted on September 2, 2010 at 12:58pmI don’t see the title of the song listed — for you youngsters out there, it is “Lili Marlene”, most famously sung by Marlene Dietrich, and beloved by both American and German soldiers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MO0lUXnAs-U

Posted on September 2, 2010 at 8:04amI wish there was a DVD or CD I could get with nothing but stories from the heroes from WWII. Too quickly they are leaving us. I wish I had a recording of the stories my Dad told us as kids about it before he past on. I would have loved for my Grandchildren to hear about it from their Great Grandfather. I salute them all.

Posted on September 2, 2010 at 5:41pmCheck out the Palm Springs Air Museum. They keep a library upstairs, and when war Vet’s come in they sometimes ask them to do interviews of their stories. Not only WWII Vet’s, but they even have testimonials of current combat Vet’s. I‘m not sure if they sell CD’s of these stories, but I know you can sit there and watch them.

Posted on September 2, 2010 at 7:51amFaith, Hope and Love but the greatest is Love as the “Good Book” says. I often wonder if the events of 65 years ago were to arise today would this generation stand to the task? Up until 8/28 i wasn’t so sure. Now i’ve never been more positive. Stories such as this one is what our youth need to learn. Students could learn more from this gentleman in a few hours then in the so called history lessons in the failling public schools.
