This probably isn’t the type of call 9-1-1 dispatchers hear everyday. A 5-year-old girl grew tired of waiting for her mother to arrive home on Wednesday and decided to take matters into her own hands by grabbing the keys to family’s Lincoln Navigator. Little Ameleah hopped into the over-sized SUV and somehow managed to shift the car into reverse. It wasn‘t until she realized that she couldn’t reach the brake or gas pedals that the vehicle rolled down the driveway and into the neighbor’s yard. Luckily, Ameleah managed to exit the SUV and run back into the house, where she called 9-1-1.
Fox News adds:
In the call with emergency operator, Ameleah first tried to avoid telling the woman on the other end of the line that she was the one who took the car out, because she was nervous that her mom was going to be ‘pissed’ at her.
As it turns out, Ameleah’s mother had been rushed to the hospital earlier in the day; her father didn’t get the message that he was supposed to pick his daughter up from school.

Posted on October 28, 2011 at 2:21pmOkay a few questions. 1) How’s mommy doing? 2) Did daddy finally come and pick up the little angel? 3) Did the neighbors notice the SUV in their yard? 4) From the pictures of the house, must be nice to own a Lincoln Navigator? I’m glad the little girl finally figured out to call 911, and get help.

Posted on October 27, 2011 at 4:45pmWhen I was four or five my dad fell asleep while watching me so I walked a quarter of a mile to where my mom worked, it was a small town so at least there wasn’t a high chance of me getting hit by a car.

Posted on October 27, 2011 at 12:45pmA couple of articles I read said that she got off the school bus. I drive a school bus. Where I work, we never leave a kindergartner without seeing a parent or guardian. We are also very careful with all elementary students. If indeed she did get off a school bus, the school bus driver here should have known better. If I were the parent, I would be looking into transportation’s policy and go after the school.Thank God nothing more serious happened.

Posted on October 27, 2011 at 2:25pmWhile it’s only a misdemeanor if some drunken conservative has the brilliant plan to have a nine year old drive his capitalist arse to the store.

Posted on October 26, 2011 at 9:26pmWhat a smart girl. At least she was not trying to drive a GM or Dodge, she had taste enough to make her first drive in a FORD.

Posted on October 27, 2011 at 7:07amWhen my 21 year old special needs son was 5 or 6, he asked me to go to Walmart and buy him gummy bears. I told him no. We lived in a shot gun apartment (you came in the living room, then through his room, my room – which had the bathroom off to the side – and then the kitchen). I was in the kitchen doing dishes, and it got real quiet…you know, how you just KNOW something is wrong? I went to the living room and couldn’t find him. I worked back, looking closer, and still couldn’t find him. He had grabbed the keys to my Chevy Cheyenne work truck, walked down 16 stairs to the ground floor and out to the parking area and had the key in the door of the truck. Problem was he had the house key. If he had opened the door, I have no question in my mind that he would have started it, put it in reverse and backed right into the building.

Posted on October 26, 2011 at 10:04pm@Lukerw- If the normal routine was her parents picking her up from school, then most likely, she lived close enough to the school to not be on the bus route. Normally the elementary school bus routes are assigned to pick up students that live farther than about 1 mile.

Posted on October 26, 2011 at 8:07pmBless her heart, she did a dangerous thing, but who could be mad at her for wanting to find her mommy?
I think, I would tell her for the future, if mommy or daddy aren‘t home and you get worried to go to a neighbor’s home.

Posted on October 26, 2011 at 6:46pmI have a question. They reported she could not reach the brake or gas pedal. A fancy machine like that, I am sure has the relay interlock that will not allow the vehicle to be put in gear without the brake pedal depressed.
