(The Daily Mail) — The distraught screams of two children whose pregnant mother was killed in a crash with a senator’s car can be heard in a distressing 911 call released today.
The chilling call was made on December 26 after a car being driven by Colorado senator Suzanne Williams crossed into the wrong lane killing 30-year-old Brianna Gomez on a bridge near Channing, Texas.
As witnesses call for help, the screams of Mrs Gomez’s daughters Mali Gomez, 6, and Eleri, 2, can be heard in the background.
‘I want my mommy! What happened to my mommy?’ the children are heard repeatedly crying.
According to police, Mrs Williams’ SUV drove into oncoming traffic and crashed head on with a car being driven by Mrs Gomez’s husband Eric.
Mrs Gomez died in surgery after her unborn child, Curran, was delivered by Caesarean section.
‘The gentleman says his wife is in the car and he think she didn’t make it,’ the 911 caller told police in the released emergency call.
‘The two little kids are just crying and screaming, so I’m going to go and comfort them,’ she said.
Police recommended that Mrs Williams be charged with criminally negligent homicide, four counts of injury to a child and tampering with physical evidence after the crash.
But in May a grand jury decided not to indict Mrs Williams, who was cited with misdemeanour violations.
According to police documents, Mrs Williams drove 783 miles from Aurora to McKinney, Texas, on Christmas Day to visit her son’s family and had slept for less than six hours before setting off for Colorado the next day.
Her son Todd drove from McKinney to Amarillo as Mrs Williams slept and watched a film with her two grandchildren in the back of the car, before she took over the driving.
The crash happened on a bridge in the Texas Panhandle after Mrs Williams drove into the wrong lane.
‘It is the opinion of the reconstruction team that Mrs Williams may have been fatigued while driving,” the report said.
She may have also been distracted ‘and not paying attention to her driving’ because she was listening to her son read a book to his children, the report said.
Mrs Williams was accused of moving one of her grandchildren from the side of the road and later not being forthcoming if asked if he had been thrown out of the car.
Williams’ attorney denied any wrongdoing. He said: ‘That is obscene that they would say she was tampering with evidence and completely out of touch with humanity.’
Listen to the 911 call here.

Posted on July 2, 2011 at 11:54amIt is sad that so many are quick to cast blame and call for lawsuits and jail. Accidents happen! This was not due to drugs, speeding, alcohol, or road rage. This is not a Chappaquiddick! What if the accident had been reversed? The truth is that these two families lives were changed forever due to a tragic accident!
Can anyone who drives honestly say they have never taken their eyes off the road for a second, driven tired, reached across the car to pick up something they dropped, or turned their head in response to activity or noise in the backseat?
Have we become such a “lawsuit driven” society that accidents are no longer possible? It is so easy to sit back and find fault, but in reality this could happen to anyone! My thoughts and prayers go out to all involved.

Posted on July 2, 2011 at 1:17pmA root cause analysis of almost any event can always come back to the driver’s fault. I contend that little that happens is an accident. Hitting a patch of black ice or hydroplaning, maybe, but what was the speed. The driver is responsible for the safe operation of the vehicle. Always.
A recent study show fatigued driving to be worse than buzzed driving. Slowed reactions and inattention can be fatal. Oh they were.
You are correct in your assumption that many drivers–I’m going on personal experience here–have been guilty of driving when tired or have veered enough to rouse those noisy rumble strips at the edge of the road when reaching for something or distracted by a passenger. One point though is that I never, repeat never, let the kids or pasengers distract my driving. That was from my early trainig. Ask the kids if I didn’t pull over to the side and correct bad behavior. They traveled well. A driver know when he or she is having trouble from fatigue. There are a lot of signs, hints and precursors. You know because you have ignored them. A real accident is rare. Most are given leniency because we cannot hold ourselve to a strict cause/effect standard.

A responsible person calls for a ride or sleeps first.
This is pure IRRESPONSIBILITY!! Something the socialist democrat people should know all about – after all – they consistently want to legislate and remove any personal responsibility, especially if it means an opportunity for them to grow government (their own power / greed)
Individual responsibility – individual FREEDOM – individual accountability – these are American values!

This should, in my oppinion have been brought to trial and all evidence presented for the courts to decide.
If there is a wrongful death lawsuit by the family, may some measure of justice be done; though none can be sufficient for the loss of a mother and a wife.

I cannot count the times that I decided to “drive on through” rather than stop and rest, or had my eyes close from fatigue only to wake up to the sound of those longitudinal line breaks on an Interstate. In the end there’s not a hell-of-alot of difference between drinking and driving and driving fatigued. The victims are just as dead. This story sure brings that fact home.

Report Post »Being fatigued and distracted is no excuse if this had happened to anyone else but a state senator or any politician that person would be held for manslaughter or worst and at the least charged with driving while not being fully in control of one’s faculties. It doesn’t say in the story if this was a Rep or a Dem and the way of the press is to always mention when it is a Rep when it is a crime so I conclude that the senator must be a Dem.

If anyone would know, you would. The article didn’t mention party affiliation so I did a little checking. It took six or more stories to determine that she is, what do you know, a Democrat. Most stories covered ms williams. The one mentioning her democrat affiliation actually talked about the poor family she destroyed.

Posted on July 2, 2011 at 3:23pmthis story sucks all around. lib/progressive/dems have no heart, they are selfish and will do whatever they have to to survive. “what happened to my mommy”, liberalism happened. my parents died in a car accident and no one ever asked how far anybody was driving or how much sleep they got, just toxacology. guess there was no tr done here since it was not mentioned/left out of the story. also, this means it is not your responsibility as a driver to make sure you are “able” to drive a car certain distances, it is up to the rest of us to dodge drunk/tired/impaired drivers, its not their fault afterall, right? libs killing people with cars is not new and they keep the laws “flexible” enough that they can skirt around them. prey for the gomez family and that they can recover from their loss. know who you are voting for.

Posted on July 2, 2011 at 6:18pmI believe in the ‘60s or ’70s, a driver having an accident while drunk was a legitimate excuse. Maybe someday, having an accident because one was too tired to drive (and therefore impaired) will be punishable too.
