ISTANBUL (AP) — About a week ago, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declared to the United Nations that most people in the world believe the United States was behind the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
To many people in the West, the statement was ludicrous, almost laughable if it weren’t so incendiary. And surveys show that a majority of the world does not in fact believe that the U.S. orchestrated the attacks.
However, the belief persists strongly among a minority, even with U.S. allies like Turkey or in the U.S. itself. And it cannot be dismissed because it reflects a gulf in politics and perception, especially between the West and many Muslims.
“That theory might be true,” said Ugur Tezer, a 48-year-old businessman who sells floor tiles in the Turkish capital, Ankara. “When I first heard about the attack I thought, ‘Osama,’ but then I thought the U.S. might have done it to suppress the rise of Muslims.”
Compassion for the United States swept the globe right after the attacks, but conspiracy theories were circulating even then. It wasn’t al-Qaida, they said, but the United States or Israel that downed the towers. Weeks after the strikes, at the United Nations, President George W. Bush urged the world not to tolerate “outrageous conspiracy theories” that deflected blame from the culprits.
However, the subsequent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan provided fodder for the damning claim that the U.S. killed its own citizens, supposedly to justify military action in the Middle East and to protect Israel. A 2006 survey by the Pew Global Attitudes Project found that significant majorities in Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan and Turkey — all among the most moderate nations in the Islamic world — said they did not believe Arabs carried out the attacks.
Two years later, a poll of 17 nations by WorldPublicOpinion.org, an international research project, found majorities in nine of them believed al-Qaida was behind the attacks. However, the U.S. government was blamed by 36 percent of Turks and 27 percent of Palestinians.
Such beliefs have currency even in the United States. In 2006, a Scripps Howard poll of 1,010 Americans found 36 percent thought it somewhat or very likely that U.S. officials either participated in the attacks or took no action to stop them.
Those who say the attacks might have been an “inside job” usually share antipathy toward the U.S. government, and often a maverick sensibility. Besides Ahmadinejad, high-profile doubters include Cuba’s Fidel Castro and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Former Minnesota governor and pro wrestler Jesse Ventura has questioned the official account. Conspiracy theorists have heckled former President Bill Clinton and other prominent Americans during speeches.
Controversy over U.S. actions and policies, including the widely discredited assertions that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, reinforced the perceptions of conspiracy theorists. Iranians dug deeper into history, recalling the U.S.-backed coup in their country in 1953.
“Initially, I was doubtful about the conspiracy theories. But after seeing the events in later years, I don’t have any doubt that it was their own operation to find a pretext to hit Muslim countries,” said Shaikh Mushtaq Ahmed, a 58-year-old operations manager in a bank in Pakistan. “It’s not a strange thing that they staged something like this in their own country to achieve a big objective.”
In March, an editorial in The Washington Post harshly criticized Yukihisa Fujita, a lawmaker with the ruling Democratic Party of Japan, for saying in an interview that some of the Sept. 11 hijackers were alive and that shadowy forces with advance information about the plot played the stock market for profit. Fujita said the article contained factual errors.
The record shows that al-Qaida agents on a suicide mission hijacked four American passenger planes and crashed them into the World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania, killing nearly 3,000 people. The evidence is immense: witness accounts, audio recordings, video and photographic documentation, exhaustive investigations and claims of responsibility by al-Qaida.
Yet every fact and official assertion only feeds into alternative views that become amplified on the Internet, some tinged with anti-Semitism because of the close U.S.-Israeli alliance. They theorize that a knowing U.S. government stood by as the plot unfolded, or that controlled demolitions destroyed the Twin Towers, and the Pentagon was hit by a missile.
“All this, of course, would require hundreds if not thousands of people to be in on the plot. It speaks volumes for the determination to believe something,” said David Aaronovitch, the British author of “Voodoo Histories: the role of Conspiracy Theory in Modern History.”
“This kind of theory really does have a big impact in the Middle East,” he said. “It gets in the way of thinking seriously about the problems in the area and what should be done.”
A U.S. State Department website devotes space to debunking conspiracy theories about Sept. 11, in the apparent belief that the allegations must be addressed forcefully rather than dismissed out of hand as the ruminations of a fringe group.
“Conspiracy theories exist in the realm of myth, where imaginations run wild, fears trump facts, and evidence is ignored. As a superpower, the United States is often cast as a villain in these dramas,” the site says.
Tod Fletcher of Petaluma, California, has worked as an assistant to David Ray Griffin, a retired theology professor, on books that question the Sept. 11 record. He was cautious about the Iranian president’s comments about conspiracy theories, suggesting Ahmadinejad may have been politically motivated by his enmity with the U.S. government.
“It seems like it’s the sort of thing that could lead to further vilification of people who criticize the official account here in the United States,” Fletcher said.

At the same time, I have come to believe that we must consider seriously the idea that at least World Trade Center building 7 (aka the Solomon Brothers building) was brought down by explosives. The explanation given by NIST simply makes no sense.

Why was there no plane wreckage at the pentagon?
Why did they cover it with a huge American flag After?
Why was a huge insurance policy taken out on the trade centers weeks before the attacks that specifically to cover acts of terror?
Why was survailance video seized from a nearby gas station which had a perfect view of the impact then after only 4 frames of the footage released showing only a fireball…. “Because it was a cruise missle”
Why were 50 gal drums loaded into the trade centers douring a fire drill weeks before the attacks?
Why was there pools of molten metal weeks after the calaps if “Thermite” was not used?
Why was Osama Bin Ladin in secured custody at a hospital during the time of the attacks?
Why was the steel from the trade centers shipped out of the coutry ASAP before it could be studied? “Lets ask the mayor”!!!!!

I do not advocate 9/11 conspiracy theories. I clearly stated that it is sheer lunacy to believe that the US government staged 9/11. I clearly stated that all so-called “facts” of proponents of this theory were debunked. Only Ahmedinejad and Far Left may believe in 9/11 conspiracy theory.
I just do not like some attempts to put real issues, like Obama’s eligibility issue under the umbrella of 9/11 conspiracy theory and proclaim that proponents of both theories are “crazy”. If somebody wants to know how many people who question Obama’s eligibility also believe in 9/11 conspiracy theory, my answer is: NOBODY. Nobody, who asks legitimate questions about Obama’s eligibility, believe in 9/11 conspiracy theory.
The claim that Obama may be ineligible for office is as legitimate and real as the claim that Obama may be a Marxist. It is very easy to condemn both claims as “crazy” claims without any honest investigation and analysis. Right?
That was my point.

That is my right. But, I wouldn’t ever allude to know what may or may not have been going on in the mind of the first President of the U.S., who has been dead for roughly 200 years. If any of our forefathers actually wrote that prayer got them what they wanted, I would respect their right to do that, but in my experience, it is probably more the power of suggestion that did the trick. The human mind is an incredibly powerful machine, capable of so much more than we give it credit for.

So what’s next? With FEMA stock-piling coffins and preparing, all accross our country, over 800 internment camps, most of which are fully staffed(likely with foreign mercenaries), I’d be hard put to draw a conclusion that is hopeful.

AGAIN, Unless you want to report back here with videos of your personal interviews with them, I submit that your ideas regarding this ‘dark side’ are simply unproven theories.
As you may well be aware, I am not one to be guided simply on faith, but instead (like the majority of critical thinkers) require some documented proof, preferably from an unbiased source or personal experience.
I do agree, the secretive nature of the Bilderberg group certainly raises some doubts in my mind as to their honesty and intentions. FACTS are where it’s at. ‘I believe’ just doesn’t cut it.

Posted on October 4, 2010 at 2:43pmGosh, MAX–
It must be a real strain to believe you are the sole target of all the hatred this world has to bear. That is certainly an immense responsibility, and not one to be taken lightly.
When you lump together the current economic mess, Islam, entitlement, The Federal Gov’t, Wall Street, greed, and FEMA, it‘s little wonder your brain hasn’t simply melted out of your ears from the pressure.
However, if you are speaking of the teachings of Mohammed, you are almost correct in your assessment that you are being targeted– YOU, and EVERYONE ELSE who will not bow to Allah and become a practicing Muslim.
I‘m not asking you to believe what I say on faith but you DO need to investigate it by reading the Qur’an, and become familiar with the principle of Taqiyya. No amount of praying will cause this plight on the free world to go away. What it is going to take is awareness, VOTING, GUTS, and a trusty firearm at your side. Throw a couple of prayers on top for good measure if you want to, and you‘ve got a combination that can’t miss. You just can’t keep a good infidel down…..

Posted on October 2, 2010 at 10:39amThe unfortunate reality of this whole “9/11 was an inside job” mess is that people realized early on that they could rake in tons of cash. People such as Alex Jones who refuse to acknowledge ANY studies that have been done to refute every claim they have made. They manufacture evidence and alter videos to justify their theories and sell “stuff” promoting it. The ludicrous movie “Loose Change” has been remade several times because it was PROVEN that video and photographs used in it’s production were ALTERED to make them look legit. The creator of the movie is quoted as saying that he would do anything necessary to become famous. Jesse “The Body” Ventura has jumped on the bandwagon and got his own series, “American Conspiracy” or whatever it’s called. These people are cashing in on the misery or the victims and they could not care less. There is a whole industry devoted to promoting conspiracies as fact and it makes the American people look stupid as hell in the eyes of the world.
If anyone sat down and took a serious look at 9/11 examining every aspect of it, it would have taken literally thousands of people to pull it off. Knowing what you know about people, can you really believe that by now, no one has leaked ANY documents outlining the “plan” or come forward with their story about how the conspiracy was pulled off? The nutjobs out there will ALWAYS fall back on the claim that these people are under threat of death if they talk…. But if these people got enough to come out and speak, their claim falls apart as an entire group would have to be erased to protect the secret. Quite frankly, the government is NOT that great at keeping secrets and holding their people to their word.

Radical Muslims attack the WTC. Patriot Act is passed. Now, because of supposed terrorist threats, homegrown terrorism….(except those “we can absorb”), government needs to monitor everything.
Again, after 9/11, we go to war in Afghanistan…..
The patriot act and ramping up of military both strengthen government. At the same time, Islam believes in a unity of church and state. Look at where they are building their new mosque. Free speech is slowly getting censored, which is prevalent in Muslim majority nations.
The choice of inaction by the government is an action in itself. New World Order can’t just be atheist, Islam fits the agenda well.
I am in NO WAY condemning Islam itself, just those individuals who use it for self-gain. And the Koran speaks against this, calling one of the worst sins someone can do.

My problem with government conspiracies is that it is impossible to get each and every person to keep their mouth shut, no matter how hard they try. It only takes one person with hard evidence or many people with circumstantial evidence to break the story. I go with hard evidence, whether it be a single indisputable item or a large volume of circumstantial evidence. In the case of 9/11, there is neither and, in fact, the hard evidence is goes against the truthers.

Posted on October 2, 2010 at 11:56amSeems like a large chunk, about 30%, of the Islamic world is reality challenged.
That may have to do with how the religion has typically been spread.
It may also have to do with some of it’s less plausible bits and pieces, and the concept that the Koran is supposed to be taken literally.
If you are willing to take an entire religious tome literally, irregardless of the inconsistencies within it or the implausibility of some of its content, then you can be expected to believe almost anything your religious leaders tell you to.
On its face Sharia law is at direct odds with the Pillars.
How can any devout literalistic Muslim not go a little insane from the contradictions?
In other religions the problems also existed. Over the centuries, most people have learned not to take stories in their religious texts as commands to be carried out. Apparent contradictions and implausibilities have been converted to fables or magical items that are only believed in as a matter of faith.
The Mormons have that whole thing with the seer stones; and, Christians, in general, have JC’s immaculate conception, and resurrection.
Most are willing to accept these things as a matter of faith; but, not allow it to distort their perceptions of reality in general.
Based on the polling about 9-11, about 30%, or maybe even more, of Muslims seem willing to allow their religion to distort their daily perceptions of reality.
That doesn’t make all of them terrorists, just insane.
