9/11 Defense Attorney in Hijab Asks Court to Order Other Women to Wear Appropriate Clothing

The female attorney of one of the 9/11 trial defendants is calling for all women in the courtroom to wear “appropriate” clothing during proceedings out of respect for her client’s religious beliefs, Fox News reported.

Civilian defense attorney Cheryl Bormann wore a full hijab during Saturday’s arraignment hearing for self-proclaimed 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammad and his four co-defendants, and asked the court to order other women to do the same.

She said the defendants’ Muslim beliefs cause them to have to avert their eyes “for fear of committing a sin under their faith” when they see a woman who is not covered up.

The judge ignored her request, the Guardian reported, but Bormann kept up the call Sunday.

“When you’re on trial for your life, you need to be focused,” she said, according to Fox.

Speaking at a press conference from Guantanamo Bay, Bormann, who is not Muslim, said she wears a hijab at “all times” when she meets with her client, Walid bin Attash.

Bin Attash has told investigators he helped select and train many of the hijackers involved in the Sept. 11 attacks and said he was involved in the 2000 attack on the U.S.S. Cole. He was brought into the courtroom Saturday strapped into a restraining chair and was only released after he promised not to disrupt the proceedings.

Bormann said the issue of female attire came up several years ago when a paralegal wore “very short skirts” and became a distraction for the defendants. She also said that on Saturday “somebody” was dressed “in a way that was not in keeping with my client’s religious beliefs.”

The Guardian reported some women in court were wearing skirts.

“If because of someone’s religious beliefs, they can’t focus when somebody in the courtroom is dressed in a particular way, I feel it is incumbent upon myself as a counsel to point that out and ask for some consideration from the prosecution,” Bormann said. “Suffice to say it was distracting to members of the accused.”

    As a Christian, I am offended and bothered all the time about how others dress, don’t dress, etc., long list. But I sure don’t expect this kind of request on my behalf if it were me….that’s part of living in a “free” country ….but I see it’s growing more “unfree” by the day. ;-(

      If Islam and being a Muslim is such a superior way of Life; why are their minds so week that just seeing a Woman in a skirt causes them to have lustful thoughts that are classified as a sin in their religion?

      Also, I thought it was against courtroom etiquette for anyone to wear any kind of headpiece or hat. Yet the drawing shows 4 of the defendants wearing Muslim hats and the defense attorney wearing a female Muslim head scarf? I think the Judge should take control of his/her courtroom and make all of them remove all hats and head scarfs.

      I see a woman here an there who ought to have more coverage. It just does not suite the business they are working in to look they they look, it is distracting to say the least.
      A far as that court goes, the defendants and that defense attorney, Sheryl Bormann , I would hope 50 beautiful women get together and come in the court room with two piece string bikinis and bow ties.
      It is surprising that the defendants would allow a woman to represent them in her play Muslim garb.
      These people, if you can call them that, murdered about 3k of us men, women and children. She needs to shut her paid for with blood money trap about that.
      I am glad the Judge did not go for it. What is she, a Muslim soul sister during trial and then resumes her Clark Kint attire after the show.

      “In consideration of your clients and their murderous conspiracies, it is the judgement of this court that the sins committed as part of this trial exceed that of looking upon a lovely woman in the eyes of Allah who, to my understanding, detests murder.       I‘m always told that because i’m an atheist I must live a horribly sad life and I”m never sure why that is.

      I don‘t see the point in living forever and I don’t know why anybody would want to. Things are more beautiful to me because we’re “doomed” to die. Moments are more precious.

      From a christian point of view, I find the constant “you are going to die and go to hell because of a choice you made in ignorance” stuff annoying as hell. Christ taught us how to live – not how to die. Constantly berating others because they do not share your beliefs is anti-christian – in fact, it’s what these douchebags on trial do for a living. A christian that self-righteously condemns others to hell is, to me, as bad as an atheist trying to remove crosses and memorials from the highway. They don’t do anyone any good, they don’t make society as a whole better in any way.

Limits are set all the time. Apparently the limits are not set according to the vulnerabilities of the easily offended as recent court decisions in the USA would lead one to believe.       @NZKiwi – I have heard the forces of Mali who staged the coup a few weeks back are now linking up with Al’Queda (heard on Voice to America) and have gutted several sights in Timbucktu designated as UN World Heritage Sights: just as the Taliban did with the giant Buddah statues in Afghanistan a few years ago.

      What was of interest on Voice to America was the mention of this phrase: Restore the Caliphate.

      In these defendants, we see the future of American leadership if an American Sharia is allowed to come to the fore.       @Angel Light – I may be able to answer a portion of your question; at least in regard for their disdain of the trial. To fanatics such as these defendants and the Muslim Brotherhood (who dealt me a lost eye and a twin set of knife cuts across the throat in my life) they see martyrdom as the pinacle of their faith to Allah and insanity of radical ideology.

      They believe that their faith has elevated them to be above any law mankind can impose upon them save for Sharia extremism; look at it in a cruder American analogy – DC political figures who are all but immune to prosecution for crimes any citizen would be jailed in a heartbeat for; or a criminal boss like Gotti the Teflan Donn.

      Another part to consider as well; in the last, doomed stand of the Nazi leadership in Berlin, why did so many of the high command and government remain faithful to the fanatical ideology of the Fuher?

All Americans suffered that day and we pray that we can one day put all of this to rest in the arms of Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. I am afraid until that day we will not be free from these satanic peacemakers.

      This woman should be thrown from the courtroom for suggesting that. We have US laws, not Shariah and shouldn’t be asked to respect their laws. I doubt they are expecting their virgins to be dressed in that garb and we need to quit wasting tax money on a trial and send them on to meet them.       I was thinking, what does someone need to do to become an attorney? Law school, the bar, but what most people don’t realize is they have to swear an oath to the Supreme Court of the United States of America, to be an officer of the court. Also, they must uphold the Constitution of the United States of America. There are no exceptions allowed, under Constitutional Law.
      My thought is, these Muslim attorneys are not really attorneys, or they are not Muslim. Which is it? If they proclaim to be Muslim, their only allegiance is to Islam and Sharia, by their own definition and admission. They are then guilty of Perjury, Treason, Sedition, High crimes and Misdemeanors and many other crimes. This is punishable by death in time of war. Are we not at war? If they have sworn allegiance to the United States Supreme Court, and to uphold the Constitution Of The United States of America, thus they are apostate and subject to death by Sharia.
      If they have not denounced Islam and Sharia publicly, then they have not denounced Islam or Sharia.

    What if the way these idiots are dressed offends someone else’s religion or feelings in the courtroom? I think the murderers should be in bright orange one piece jump suits… perhaps Sherriff Arpaio will loan out some pink accessories.

Women, why do you accept this low standard for your husbands and sons? Do you really believe that the creator made you inferior? Men, why do you accept this treatment for your daughters? Your sisters? Your mothers? Your Koran tells of healings by Jesus (Sura 5:110). He healed the blind and the leper. Do you know that he healed women? Do you know that he raised daughters from death? By what power did he do this?

      Your point about needing Hajibs because they are so highly sexualized is a very plausible concept and one of the many real reasons they may force their women into this practice. Again, where is NOW and other women’s groups supposedly fighting for equality of sexes. They would be front and center if the hajibs hindered the abortion docs from doing their deeds. Luckily for Fluke and NOW they can remove their veils when taking their pills. ;)
