Ceremonies, Protests to Mark 9/11 Anniversary

(AP) — In the past, the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks was marked by somber reflection and a call to unity, devoid of politics. No more.

This year’s commemoration of the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people in New York, Washington and Shanksville, Pa., promises to be the most political and contentious ever, because of a proposed Islamic center and mosque near ground zero, and a Florida pastor’s plan to burn the Quran — and the debate those issues have engendered over religious freedom.

As in other years, official ceremonies are planned at the three locations the terrorists struck. President Barack Obama will attend a commemoration at the Pentagon, while Vice President Joe Biden will attend the ceremony at ground zero. First lady Michelle Obama and former first lady Laura Bush will travel to Shanksville to observe the anniversary there.

Vice President Joe Biden will attend the largest of the three — the New York ceremony at a park near ground zero, where 2,752 people were killed when Muslim extremists flew planes into the twin towers of the World Trade Center. The ceremony there will pause four times: twice to mark the times each plane hit the towers, and twice to observe the times the towers fell. Houses of worship in the city have been asked to toll their bells at 8:46 a.m., when the first plane struck the north tower.

But this time, along with the formal ceremonies, activists for and against the proposed Islamic center are planning their own events to capture the emotion of the day for political purposes.

Terry Jones, the pastor of a small, independent church in Gainesville, Fla., shot to international notoriety by threatening to mark 9/11 by burning copies of the Quran — a plan he canceled under pressure from the White House but now says he’s reconsidering.

In Afghanistan, at least 11 people were injured Friday in scattered protests over Jones’ plan. Only a few thousand people attended those rallies and no large-scale demonstrations were reported elsewhere. In Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim country, cleric Rusli Hasbi told 1,000 worshippers at Friday prayers that whether or not he burns the Quran, Jones had already “hurt the heart of the Muslim world.”

Also on Saturday, former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin was expected to observe the anniversary in Alaska with Fox News TV host Glenn Beck. The two conservative celebrities hosted a Tea Party rally* last month at the Lincoln Memorial.

Nowhere do emotions run higher than in New York, where the proposed Islamic center just two blocks ground zero has inflamed the planned commemoration.

Activists are organizing a pair of dueling rallies — one against the planned Islamic center, one supporting it — to follow New York’s official ceremony at a park southeast of the trade center site.

The anti-mosque rally has bitterly divided family members of those who died in the attacks, with some planning to attend the rally and speak, while others denounce it as unnecessary and wrong.

Sally Regenhard, who lost her firefighter son, Christian Regenhard, in the attacks, said she would attend the city ceremony in the morning where the names of the dead are read aloud, as she has done each year since the attacks. Then, she planned to head over to the anti-mosque rally.

“The purpose is to speak out and express our feelings that this mosque, the location of it, is a grievous offense to the sensitivity of 9/11 families,” Regenhard said. “There’s nothing political about people who want to speak out against something they think is so wrong, so hurtful and so devastating.”

But Donna Marsh O’Connor, whose pregnant daughter, Vanessa, was killed in the attacks, supports the mosque. She said she strongly opposes the planned rally and the political motivations behind it.

“It‘s more of the same hate mongering and fear mongering that’s been going on for years,” O’Connor said. “People have a right to free speech. But if they’re talking about sensitivities to 9/11 families, why are they rallying and doing events on a day we should spend thinking about those we lost?

The rally is being hosted by Pamela Geller, a conservative blogger who has actively opposed the planned Islamic center since the project’s inception.

John Bolton, who served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under President George W. Bush, was expected to send a videotaped message of support to the rally, as was conservative journalist Andrew Breitbart. Geert Wilders, a Dutch politician who advocates banning the Quran and taxing Muslim women who wear head scarves, planned to address the crowd in person, as well as a handful of Republican congressional candidates who have made opposition to the mosque a centerpiece of their campaigns.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Geller said the rally would be “respectful” and was not intended to provoke violence or other inappropriate behavior on what has typically been a somber, mournful anniversary.

“It’s a rally of remembrance for tens of thousands who lost loved ones that day,” Geller said. “It’s not a political event, it’s a human rights event.”

New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly told reporters this week his department was prepared for the rally and had already deployed additional security at the mosque site two blocks north of ground zero since it’s been the target of protests already.

But, Kelly said, police weren’t anticipating major problems.

“We have no reason to anticipate violence at these demonstrations. … There is no indication, no intelligence that would indicate violence occurring,” Kelly said.

I am sooooooooooooooooooooo sick of the Muslim community complaining about how they are being treated in the USA. Please, if you are so unhappy go back to where you came… To protest on 9/11 at Ground Zero over the treatment of Muslims will be the mistake. I seen the flag being burned by Afghans today. Where is the disgust from the Afghan community, the Afghan President and the Muslims who live here in America over that. Why are they so insulted when things are done and said about them and all the world has to agree with that or be killed.. and yet, when they do some outrageous things, like kill over 3,000 people on 9/11, we are suppose to be tolerant of their religion and beliefs. I hear no outrage over the behaviour of the Muslims, here or abroad, the Shiria law and how they belittle and treat woman. This country has been and done more than any other country in trying to understand the beliefs of the Muslim community. They totally disregard our beliefs by the actions they take and the things they say. Did this building of the mosque by Ground Zero spark allot of what is going on now.. YES!!! and that was intentional. The pastor in Florida should not burn the queron. Maybe he should burn the flags of the countries that seem to get the go ahead to burning ours…

It’s a book, paper and ink written by man… What did our forefathers fight for? What a cowardly country we have become. And who other than NYC’ mayor has stood up for this man’s Constitutional Right, not our President – Commander and Chief. I am appalled at how weak America has become…

Now that Pastor Jones has gotten the attention he wanted, let him redirect his efforts at supporting the 911 Truth Movement. That would be a real service.

For those who have followed the truth movement, we KNOW why all this hoopla is happening… divert the public from the fact that the 911 attacks were “allowed” to happen if NOT partially planned by darkside fascists in the admin.

One of the issues that Glenn is wrong about and won’t follow his own counsel to seek out truth, is the 911 truth. Glenn, Restore Honor to America

I got to be honest. I am sick and tired of tip-toeing around to appease the Muslims. Damn it, this is America and in America we do things the American way, which means that the majority rules. And the majority says no mosque near Ground Zero. If you don’t like it – tough!

Want to intimidate me with threats of unrest or even violence? All I can say is – Bring it on!

    LISTEN UP PEOPLE!!!!!!

September 11 changed the lives of all Americans. We stood together peacefully then, so perhaps it’s time for all Americans to reflect on the tragedy of that fateful day.

Don‘t disrespect the victim’s relatives – especially their young children – or the survivor’s who were present when the towers fell.

September 11 belongs to all Americans. Be respectful, be patriotic, be honorable, and be there for those who lost someone on that day.

Forget your signs, your opposition to the Mosque and your desire to speak your mind at the Ground Zero site.

Take your children, your flag and your integrity. This is hallowed ground to Americans…don’t make a mockery of it. The fact is, Americans have something that the rest of the world doesn’t really comprehend. We don’t believe that violence solves anything, and we don‘t end up on the 5 o’clock news with horrible, destructive protests.

We are Americans. We stand together on this day to honor those who were killed and those who still need your support. Stand quietly, without signs and restore honor to that sacred sight tomorrow. Don’t allow anyone to attempt to ruin this commemorative day. Know that your actions will be seen around the world. Stand proud.

And anyone who isn’t afraid to admit it will agree. Your advice is GOOD advice. I‘ll pray for all of you to feel the hand of God on your shoulders while you stand and honor America’s victims of September 11,2001. God bless you all ALWAYS!

still makes us wonder if 9/11 is still the big opening round for the muslim conquest of America. all-American cowboy and jet-fighter-pilot PRESIDENT Bush kept us safe and was all-American about it: you knife us, we gun you down. but with sissy MUSLIM-indonesian-schoolboy obama in the presidency, islam is emboldened to strike us HERE, just look at FT HOOD, and with all these mega mosques going up, how many have more Ft-Hood-esque muslim murderers lurking in them.

Precious People, we must remember that: (1) We ARE AT WAR with muslim extremists both here and abroad, who want to destroy us, our freedoms, our religion, our country; (2) we were attacked unmercifully without provocation nine years ago tomorrow; (3) the man (Do we even know he is who or what he says he is since we have NO PROOF, really?) functioning (the term is used derisively here) in the role of President of the United States of America lies almost every time (99.9%) he opens his mouth as he has proven over and over again; (4) there is NOTHING about him that is AMERICAN, “nada” /no-thing; (5) and, it is obvious by his actions and in-actions that he wants to see the destruction of our faith and of our nation. Pretty much sums up the msm’s approach as well. As Bob Dylan once sang “You Got To Serve Somebody…it may be the devil, or it may be the LORD, but you gotta serve somebody.” It is true: each one of us either serves satan, or we serve the LORD. The division, the line in the sand, is growing clearer each day. The sheep are following their Shepherd’s voice. The goats can neither hear His voice, nor see Him. We must pray for one another and for our country /countries, and we must have our Shepherd’s courage as we stand for Him in these times. May GOD bless each of you mightily and make HIS presence known to you in such a way that you will know you have stood in HIS AMAZING GRACE. I think HE did a good job of that on 8/28, don’t you?

The two conservative celebrities hosted a Tea Party rally last month at the Lincoln Memorial.”…. The Restoring Honor Rally was NOT a Tea Party rally… it was exactly what the title of the rally says it was~a gathering to honor those who live honorable and worthy lives, to cherish our American foundations, to call the entire American community back to the Creator God, and to challenge each and every one of us to live up to the highest of ideals–honesty, decency, humility and faith. If we meet the challenges issued to us all at the 8/28 Restoring Honor event, the US will again be a place of honest and vigorous discourse, and have a backbone of steel with a kindness of heart, helping the helpless and felling the oppressor. Then 9/11 events will be remembering the lost, honoring the rescuers, giving support to the families, and being wise in the use of our freedoms.

The problem is, and has always been with the sharia (Islamic law). “Traditional Muslims who understand the Quran and the hadith believe that sharia (Islamic law) expresses the highest and best goals for all societies. It is the will of Allah.”

    Link: http://www.americanthinker.com/2005/08/top_ten_reasons_why_sharia_is.html

For instance, If I am not mistaken, a Muslim cannot be baptized into the Mormon faith unless there is clearance given from the First Presidency, because of the sharia. ( read #2. Islam orders apostates to be killed.) They are sensitive to this and don’t want to have a person convert, then be killed by a family member for apostatizing from the Muslim faith.

The property that the mosque is to built upon is now being held as a jizya tax, or a jihad tax on Christians and Jews. (read #1. Islam commands offensive and aggressive and unjust jihad.)
“People of the Book (Jews and Christians) had three options (Sura 9:29): fight and die; convert and pay a forced ‘charity’ or zakat tax; or keep their Biblical faith and pay a jizya or poll tax. The last two options mean that money flows into the Islamic treasury, so why would Muhammad receive a revelation to dry up this money flow?”

This was now just brought to light. The property was purchased for $4.8 mil – Donald Trump offered to buy the property for 6 mil ($1.2 mil profit for them) IF they would only move the mosque at least 5 blocks away. They refused the offer and demanded $25 million. That to me, is a way to “tax” the American business people and way of life, and keep money flowing into the “Islamic treasury” to the tune of a $20 million jizya or poll tax. What do you think they could do with $20 million cash, hummm?

I love how people just post comments without knowing what the hell they are even talking about. How do all of you feel now that you have feces all over your faces? This was a friggin reprint fools. It was NOT written by The Blaze nor any of it’s correspondents. DUH!

totally agreed!!! After I read that, I went straight to the comments to see anyone addressing this!! It was not a Tea Party Rally….I’m shocked that even The Blaze is saying it. There was nothing about the tea party even mentioned that day–I was there!!!!! Don’t make it political, it was NOT political.

Common practice or not–maybe The Blaze should set a new standard by letting people know from the get-go that the article didn’t come from them—don‘t treat us like we’re stupid because a lot of us didn’t see that at first…..I would think that this site was created to give a better reporting of what was happening, not just a reprint of incorrect crap.

Be assured that the Blaze has already been infiltrated as this is the modus operandi of the PTB. How could any true Blaze person say the lie that 8/28 was a tea party event. Don’t accept any excuse that it was simply an error. IT WASN’T.

Freelancer: Good point. But when soemthing is inaccurate, most people would put a comment which corrects the error but in parentheses.

It’s an AP Story guys, just reposted by The Blaze. It’s says that clearly in the hader and it tells you who wrote the story at the bottom. You’re the one that needs to “get it Right.”

Thank you FREELANCER. I do see that now, I got stuck when I saw that and was to busy pointing it out to remember to check the source, I stand corrected. But, I don’t appreciate your feces comment… a bit overkill on your part… maybe you should have just let it go, kind of the same thing I was having a problem with on the first comment. I am also not a fool. You are welcome…

The reason it got Politicized is that the Muslim in Chief stuck his Quran in where it didn’t belong. He gives a blessing to a Mosque that is going to sit on the ground where flaming debris from a plane landed after being slammed face first into a building being driven by 18 Muslims who in turn murdered 3000 people.

Then he gets into the act about book burning. Since when it is a federal offense to warrent the FBI involvement to burn a book?? But yet when Bibles are burned in Kabul, or Doctors and Nurses are killed for being Christian in Afghanistan…our Dear leader remains curiously silent. Even still there is no outrage when the Mutants from the Religion of rest in pieces burn flags on a NY street.

My question here is, where was the Mesiah when the Westorough Baptist Church was picketing a dead soldiers funeral?? Where was his moral outrage then? When do we say enough of the double standard?

Haven’t you heard? We’re afraid of Islam. Your freedom of speech extends to dead soldiers’ funerals, voter intimidation of white voters by the New Black Panthers, etc. But we forfeit our freedom of speech, and sometimes even our right to life, when it comes to Islam because if we offend them, they’ll get mad and hurt us. If we continue trying to appease them, maybe they will start liking us. Think so?

wish they would write it truthfully. the victims WERE KILLED BY muslim “extremists” following their transnational political agenda , not just “killed WHEN muslim extremists” ..flew planes into the WTC…. too bad we cannot get an AMERICAN President in there right now who would make some sort of AMERICAN laws about what cannot be perped on America, like all this emotional blackmail the muslims are doing to us. we do not negotiate with terrorists, remember?! GET THEIR VICTORY MOSQUE AWAY FROM GROUND ZERO.

This entire thing is absolutely horrible. I dont understand it, nor how his happened. It’s like we are letting them build a monument of terror, right in the heart of our land. How can this be? I just cannot fathom any of this. It’s so horrible to imagine! And everyday it just gets worse and worse. All I have left in me is to pray to God for answers. Pray for hope.

Then there is this Florida man. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid! 1 really stupid man causes an entire international incident. Don’t burn a Qoran, please! That is not the people that we are. And you have no right to speak to the Imam’s like your speaking for America! Go away, and crawl back into that hole you came from!!! Our God never promotes violence! Saying your doing this in the name of God is truly the outrage! Even knowing that I dislike the Mosque going in to the ground zero area. There has to be another path to follow to stop it! For God’s sake, stop it diplomatically if possible. But stop it definitely!!!

Truth is they were murdered, not killed.
Beck and Palin did not host a TEA Party rally last month.
And you can’t cite free speech and then tell someone who you disagree that they should be doing something more appropriate then exercising their own free speech.

Love is given. But respect is earned. And my forgiveness of muslims would have to begin with their repentance-which they have never shown. I have nothing but disrespect for any of you muslims. They Murder, rape, torture people (more that 50,000 documented cases worldwide since 9/11). You are a religion of hate-and your religion is spreading. They say I’m being insensitive? Lets see how sensitive they are when i fly a muslim laden airplane into one of their mud huts! I am not worried about being politically correct! And BHO can kiss my A$$! We have turned the other cheek and we have been the only ones who have been tolerant. That time is now over. BBQ at my house-I’ll be serving pork-slow roasted over quran and wood chips. As far as any of these piss ant little countries are concerned-you keep talking-Maybe its time to man up. you want to be so critical of our freedom loving country? a great way to protest would be for you not to accept all the foreign aid our stupid government gives all you backward people! I have nothing but contempt for muslims and your evil religion. AND I AM NOT EVER GOING TO BE AFRAID TO SAY SO. I will spend the rest of my day remembering the lives you took on this day. If i could spit on every last one of you people i would. There are no ‘moderate’ muslims. If there were any-they would stand up when the radicals did their despicable acts. but your silence is deafening.
