95 Arrested After Trying to ‘Occupy’ a San Fran Bank: ‘Give Us Back What You Stole!’

SAN FRANCISCO (The Blaze/AP) — Police arrested 95 Occupy protesters and students Wednesday who stormed into a downtown San Francisco bank and shouted slogans as they tried to set up camp in the lobby.

The arrests came after about 100 demonstrators rushed into a Bank of America branch, chanting “money for schools and education, not for banks and corporations.” The L.A. Times has more regarding what occurred inside of the bank:

They scrawled messages in chalk on the bank walls — “Greed!“ and ”Give Us Back What You stole!” — and plastered pink phone message slips on desks and computer screens. One man was seen urinating in a corner.

Police officers in riot gear cuffed the activists one-by-one as hundreds more demonstrators surrounded the building, blocking entrances and exits.

Officer Albie Esparza said 95 were arrested. Authorities said they were taken to jail, cited and released.

No injuries were reported. See some footage from outside of the occupation:

And here’s more footage (caution: language):

Willow Curless, 63, said she and her husband rode their bicycles from their home in Marin County and watched the protest from outside the bank.

“I honor these people in there,” she said. “They’re making an important statement for the 99 percent.”

In a separate protest, about 250 demonstrators assembled in front of the State Building on Golden Gate Avenue for about 90 minutes. Elsewhere, students and anti-Wall Street activists settled into a new encampment at the University of California, Berkeley, and visited the state Capitol to demand the restoration of funding for higher education.

At Berkeley, police watched over about two dozen tents that were pitched Tuesday night on a student plaza despite a campus policy that forbids camping. Police warned that protesters could be arrested if they didn’t leave.

Seth Weinberg, a 20-year-old cognitive science major, said he slept in a tent on Sproul Plaza to press the university to lobby for more public education funding.

“There should be a way for anyone who wants to go to college if they choose to,” Weinberg said. “What the university doesn’t understand is that we are not camping out. This is a constant protest.”

In Sacramento, about 75 student leaders and a few administrators from UC Berkeley and the University of California, Davis lobbied lawmakers and the governor to allocate more money to education.

Adam Thongsavat, student body president at UC Davis, called on lawmakers to be “more courageous, more aggressive and more thoughtful.”

“Come to our campuses and see how your actions affect us,” he said. “I want you all to tell us why prisons deserve more spending than universities.”

University of California President Mark Yudof issued a statement of support for the students’ “passion and conviction” in support of public higher education.

“We also suffer together the strains caused by what has been a long pattern of state disinvestment in the University of California,” he said.

Protesters in San Francisco marched through downtown in a demonstration partly organized by ReFund California, a coalition of student groups and university employee unions.

The banks don’t owe these idiots anything. It appears the majority of them have never worked or held a job. They probably never even had a bank account, either checking or savings. How in the world could a bank have “Stolen” anything from them?

A person has to be a responsible citizen to have a bank account. They must have a JOB, they must have income in order to put anything in the bank. Does that describe that occupying crowd? I THINK NOT!

So what do you call it when you (OWS) take something from someone (the banks) that you perceive was taken from someone else (the government/consumer). Since most of these jokers are college students I suspect they have already taken enough. I assume were footing the bill for their education since they’ll default on it anyway, plus will probably draw unemployment when they can’t get a job applying their degree in tie dye art or sand script translations. Which were footing the bill for as well.

I‘m thinking any good lawyer joke can now be applied to OWSer’s. What do you call it when a bus load of OWSer’s goes off a cliff……….?

So now criminal trespassing is legal?

Why are the cops NOT removing these dirt bags? Have all property rights been declared null and void? Or has BOA agreed to let these unwashed vermin “occupy” their halls? If so, never mind, BOA then deserves what it gets. If not, arrest these slime monkeys and put them up on charges.

Don’t be so close minded, I was in the protest because I believe it’s unfair what they are doing. I can’t pay my college tuition with my job and my parents help. I refuse to let tuition rise and let the rich get richer while we the students suffer. I agree, they shouldn’t have gotten rowdy and all but overall, we have the right to be angry.

        @occupyfresno

Why exactly do you have the ‘right to be angry’?

Are you mad you made a personal decision (that no one else is responsible for) to go to a college that you knew you couldn’t afford before even sending in your application for enrollment?

Are you upset that the ‘rich that are getting richer’ are the over-paid, tenured, liberal professors and administrators who fill your skulls full of mush with grievances and paradigms that have no basis in reality and who have retreated to the safety and security of academia rather than have their precious philosophies and ideas challenged in the real world?

Are you angry that the ‘tuition rise’ you are talking about is directly caused by Universities and Colleges who keep on raising tuition rates and fees because they know that Uncle ‘Bama will always be around to hand out some more of his ’stash money’ in the form of Pell Grants and no-interest student loans?
If Colleges and Universities know that they will always get their money from the taxpayer no matter how high they raise the tuition they have absolutely no incentive to keep the tuition cost reasonable.

If you are going to get upset at anyone it should be the right people (government bureaucrats, school trustees, college professors and administrators) for the right reasons (gouging government loan programs, over-loading degree programs with worthless PC courses to increase credit hours required to graduate, state programs for giving illegals in

@occupyfresno: You are one of the ones that made me sick to my stomach. What makes you think that I or any other hard working taxpayer should pay for your education? Get your a$$ out and go to work for it. I did. My husband did. My kids did. Nobody handed us anything, and certainly not an education. We worked for everything that we got. You don’t want your tuition going up? Get rid of the Union teachers demanding more and more for nothing. They are just like you. They think the world owes them a living. There are very few teachers today that care about educating their students and not just doing it for the money. ALL of my teachers were concerned with education, but then the Unionos hadn’t taken over the school system either.

It seems to me that the majority of the money given to the banks in the bail-out was not the money they paid in taxes. (If they paid any taxes at all, they seem to be unemployed) I would guess that a large share of the bailout money came from the richest 1%. This is the point at which I get confused!

Dear OWS, when you say “Give us back what you stole”, you forget that when you signed your mortgage agreement you agreed to pay the money that the bank LOANED you. You do not own the house until you pay the bank back. They tried to do you a favor and now you are acting like a fool. Same deal with student loans, only the government manages the loans for your tuition. So it’s the government, Sallie Mae, that gave you money to go to college with the expectation that you would pay it back. So if you don’t pay the bank or Sallie Mae back, it’s YOU that is stealing. Wake up. No one is buying your bs and you look like idiots protesting what you don’t understand.

“I want you all to tell us why prisons deserve more spending than universities.”
Hows this…They have a better education system in place…In jail, you will learn how to follow the rules, that not following the rules, you get punished. You will also learn that what the other guy has, isn’t yours, even if he has way more than you. Another good life lesson you’ll learn, If you stand in someones face screaming “We are the 99%, This is our street!” You’ll get a beat down…Just a few of the really good courses they offer in jail..You won’t hear a prison employee promote an “occupy movement”…Man, this list could go on forever…
But, really let’s give them what they want…Want free education, let’s see how many of these colleges stay open after the government starts paying them… You like your school?….It’s there because of the people who want to go there…I don’t want to go to that school, so why should I pay for you to go there?…If I’m gonna pay for it …You go to the school I want you to go to…No more freedom of choice…That comes with a free society…Understand that?..You like to pick your major?..That won’t happen any more either…Doctor?…Ahh, to expensive , your gonna major in Sanitation Engineering.
