A College Football Player Recovered a Fumble on Thurs. and Then Ran Toward the Wrong End Zone!

Yesterday was only the first day of the football season and we may already have our funniest highlight.

Kent State linebacker Andre Parker recovered a fumble during the final seconds of the first half against Towson. It was a muffed punt, and Parker was in the right place at the right time. He was also in perfect position to score a touchdown, as he was just yards away from the end zone when he got his hands on the ball. There’s only one problem: Parker picked up the ball and ran the wrong way.

Yup, it happened:

Now luckily he didn’t make it all the way and was tackled by the other team. But actually, that didn’t matter much: the play was ruled dead where Parker recovered the ball. Deadspin explains:

It turns out the whole play was called off and the referees concluded they should have … called the play dead. They ended up placing the ball at Towson’s 7 yard line, meaning in one play both teams and the referees screwed up in some rather big way.

Welcome to football season!

Towson SHOULD have been blocking for him. Apparently they were somewhat disoriented as well.

If you added up the IQ present on that whole field it would not equal room temperature.

I think a few have already pointed this out: If you look closely at the video, the players on the Kent State side were actually BLOCKING FOR “Wrong Way” Parker!! And, to top matters off, there were players on the opposing team attempting to TACKLE “Wrong Way” Parker!!!

This makes 22 players look dumber than hell! (Probably 22 Obama voters….)

Exactly. The real story here is that 3 members of the ‘receiving team’ tackled him at mid-field. The smart thing to do was to let him run the field and tackle him in the endzone. Towson should be embarassed. Kent State still dominates.

True! Colleges brag about how their student football players and how they must have passing grades to play but if you have ever been to college you will realize that is a bunch of malarky. How many times have I seen football players in my classroom…one sat right in front of me; and after the first day they suddenly were absent from every class after that. Miracle upon miracle…they still passed the class. (had friends that knew such things), Some are smart but most are completely without a brain.

Guess the folks here are too young to remember! Marshall ran a fumble back the wrong way against the 49ers (I’m fairly sure), who had the sense to let him go. Don‘t know if the film’s available on line — NFL is very protective of their brand.

At least with Romney he is an experienced BUSINESS man rather than a community organizer with no real work experience. Oh, yes, he was a Senator for two years and let’s check his record at that. I don’t think he ever worked as a real attorney. And of course we have done SO well over the last 4 years haven’t we. I had hoped for change and it will finally happen this November.

He tried, question though; if he had crossed the other teams line, would it have counted as a touchdown?

@SNOW- no… it would have been a safety (2 points for the other team) then the other team would also get the ball back.

He’s in deep with his bookie. Was just trying to get his money back. The defenders chasing him were doing the same.

Looks like the other coaches were angry that their players tackled him to prevent him for scoring a touchdown for their team. It is nice that the refs called the play dead but how was that play dead?. Must be new rules in the game or are the rules so much different from high school?; but then I never played College ball.

@PDW- you obviously have no grasp of the rules. It would have been a safety.. not a touchdown. Always been that way.

@PDW, the play should have been called dead as soon as the ball was recovered by the kicking team. You cannot advance a turnover on a muffed (a legitimate fumble is a different story) kick in college, so the refs should have blown the whistle right when the linebacker grabbed the ball. There have been some pretty blatantly bad calls as of late, both in college and the NFL.
