‘A Complicated Relationship’: U.S. Reportedly Sees Israel as Biggest Spy Threat in the Near East

AP Report Says U.S. Sees Israel as Biggest Counterintelligence Threat in the Near East(The Blaze/AP) — Joseph Wippl, a former senior CIA clandestine officer and head of the agency’s office of congressional affairs, seemingly had it right when he described Israel’s relationship with the United States as “complicated.”

“They have their interests. We have our interests,” he said. “It’s a balancing act.”

And this weekend couldn’t serve as a better illustration.

As Mitt Romney visits the country and holds meetings that are closed to the press, Barack Obama has pledged another $70 million in military aid and reiterated America’s “unshakable commitment to Israel,” according to the Associated Press.

However, the Obama administration has also pledged hundreds of millions to Egypt and the Palestinian Authority– both of which have a very tenuous relationship with Israel.

Now, the Associated Press has a full-fledged report on how the United States sees Israel as its number one counterintelligence threat in the Near East.

The Associated Press reports:

The CIA considers Israel its No. 1 counterintelligence threat in the agency’s Near East Division, the group that oversees spying across the Middle East, according to current and former officials. Counterintelligence is the art of protecting national secrets from spies. This means the CIA believes that U.S. national secrets are safer from other Middle Eastern governments than from Israel.

Israel employs highly sophisticated, professional spy services that rival American agencies in technical capability and recruiting human sources. Unlike Iran or Syria, for example, Israel as a steadfast U.S. ally enjoys access to the highest levels of the U.S. government in military and intelligence circles.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to talk publicly about the sensitive intelligence and diplomatic issues between the two countries.

The AP continues to say that, contrary to political rhetoric, Israel is by no means America’s closest ally:

Israel is not America’s closest ally, at least when it comes to whom Washington trusts with the most sensitive national security information. That distinction belongs to a group of nations known informally as the “Five Eyes.” Under that umbrella, the United States, Britain, Australia, Canada and New Zealand agree to share intelligence and not to spy on one another. Often, U.S. intelligence officers work directly alongside counterparts from these countries to handle highly classified information not shared with anyone else.

Israel is part of a second-tier relationship known by another informal name, “Friends on Friends.” It comes from the phrase “Friends don’t spy on friends,” and the arrangement dates back decades. But Israel’s foreign intelligence service, the Mossad, and its FBI equivalent, the Shin Bet, both considered among the best in the world, have been suspected of recruiting U.S. officials and trying to steal American secrets.

Around 2004 or 2005, the CIA fired two female officers for having unreported contact with Israelis. One of the women acknowledged during a polygraph exam that she had been in a relationship with an Israeli who worked in the Foreign Ministry, a former U.S. official said. The CIA learned the Israeli introduced the woman to his “uncle.” That person worked for Shin Bet.

Jonathan Pollard, who worked for the Navy as a civilian intelligence analyst, was convicted of spying for Israel in 1987 when the Friends on Friends agreement was in effect. He was sentenced to life in prison. The Israelis for years have tried to win his release. In January 2011, Netanyahu asked Obama to free Pollard and acknowledged that Israel’s actions in the case were “wrong and wholly unacceptable.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office has called the Associated Press article a “false report,” and the spokesman of Israel’s ambassador in Washington reportedly said: “[U.S. intelligence agencies] are our partners in confronting many mutual challenges. Any suggestion otherwise is baseless and contrary to the spirit and practice of the security cooperation between our two countries.”

The US “intelligence” community has been anti-Israel for YEARS. I had a security clearance for some time and yearly espionage threat training was required. My last involved a DIS rep coming into town to give the briefing and his vitriol against Israel, with Jonathan Pollard as his poster child, was VERY deep. This bias is the primary reason Pollard is STILL in prison… how long was it that that Russian spy ring was held before they were sent back as national heroes?

Of course Joseph Wippl is speaking of his experience during the Bush administration when he access to this knowledge. Weird the photo of President Obama in the lede, when this guy is presenting information (very believable IMO) about Israeli counterintelligence. Please let’s not pretend this has anything to do with Obama. We’re spying on each other as we are with every other foe and ally and we always have been. As Reagan said, “Trust but verify.” Please folks.

It’s never been more clear lately just how naive our politicians and the adminstration is when it comes to dealing with Muslims and especially the Muslim Brotherhood…. Anybody with the least bit of intelligence can see that with Islam “the ends always justify the means”… It goes all the way back to Mohammed lying and breaking a treaty to retake Mecca… When they shake your hand ,, watch out for the dagger in the back. Lying is an integral part of their religion.

I get really tired of the News Media using these so called expert news sources, and they never bother to find out why they are no longer with the government agency they where once with.

Joseph Wippl was a political animal when he was with the CIA. He has been censured at least 20 times while with the CIA as a clandestine officer.

This guy was so incompetent, He actually left his left his sensitive communication equipment, in his unlocked Tel Aviv apartment, and someone walked in and compromised it.

The News Media always find the best and the brightest as their experts……….

      @ Warrior

New Zealand is a staunch supporter of Israel, BUT:

A few years ago two Israeli agents were caught and convicted of stealing the identities of dead NZ children in order to create false passports.

We do not know what they intended to use these for, but these same agents, as well as some others, had also been up to no good in Australia.

The Israeli government, through Mossad, knew about and approved this operation. It was a clear violation of our law and our international relationship. The Israeli government accepted this, apologised, and asked for their agents back. We returned them.

International espionage is a murky world and we don’t know what the real truth is. To suggest that Israel is your “only ally”, however, is naive at best.

Think about this… If we found out that England was working with and supporting our enemies, we would have CIA operatives infiltrating and collecting data IMMEDIATELY… The fact that Israel is suspected of sending intelligence gatherers to find out exactly what this administration is up to is disturbing, but think about the treatment of Israel over the last 3 years… That is more disturbing, and I don’t blame them one bit. This administration has been outright hostile to our closest ally. I would do exactly the same thing if I were in their position. The president is funding countries that have leadership now that are vowing to destroy Israel… The Muslim Brotherhood is receiving our taxpayer dollars. I am fairly sure that Israel is wondering why.

Starting in 1994 the U.S. starting providing financial aid for the Palestinians. The claim is that the funding was issued directly to the Palestinian Authority and never to the PLO. It is well known if you had your eyes and ears open back then that the Palestinian Authority redirected massive amounts of that funding to the PLO and other Terrorist organizations. For those of you who just have to disagree with me, feel free to look it up yourself. Just type “Palestinian Authority financial aid to PLO.” Just who started this funding? Why, it was good old Beelzebubba Clinton himself. The Carter Administration had considered doing the same, but did not have the support even with a fully loaded Dem Congress. There were still some semi-conservative Dems back then. Now this funding goes to Hamas, as well as a lot of other international funds. Hamas likely receives enough “free” money annually to finance the highest living standards for their people when compared to the rest of the world. But, killing Jews, and those from nations who support Israel is far more fun for these fanatics.
Is it any wonder that Israel does conduct espionage on many nations to include it’s so called allies? I’m sure the other Israel friendly nations to include the U.S. spy on Israel too. The statement from Britt Hume that jumped out at me the most was that Israel has to to do this our of a strong sense of “Survival!”

They are in a constant battle for their very survival, as the relentless attacks attest, and they have bent over backwards to find a diplomatic solution. Their enemies remain unmoved, and their friends have occasionally let them down. The Obama administration has been downright intransigent.

Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman, Senator John Warner (R-VA)

A truly limited number, but of these RINOs in the mix, is anybody here really surprised? Frankly, my only surprise was to not see Susan Collins, and Olympia Snow’s names on this list.

The only reason that the United States’ relationship with Israel is “complicated” is because obama and his cabal are sworn enemies of Israel. When obama is removed from power, our relationship with Israel will be restored to its proper state.

Are you freakin kidding me?..try watching Fabled Enemies on Utube and see if you still feel the same way..They followed the terrorists the whole time.before 9/11..and were filmed hi fiving each other at their bird’s eye view of the WTC attack.. They have been in control for a very long time..They controlled Germany through Hitler. and they controlled the Bolsheviks in Russia where 20 million Russians were murdered. Yep..they would be the Rothschilds..from the Tribe of Dan..i understand..They forced their bank here through the War of 1812 and I also understand that they planned our civil war and financed both sides..They are the ones behind the un Federal Reserve..who controls half of the wealth of the world. THem in Germany..Communists/ZIonists http://www.youtube.com/verify_controversy?next_url=/watch%3Fv%3Dvw9Qm_TejCo%26skipcontrinter%3D1

It’s a fact that Israel has been caught spying on us numerous times.

Other than demented Bible prophecy, is there a reason Christians love Israel so much? What does America get out of that relationship, aside from death?

The problem John is that most people don’t know the difference between Communist/Zionists and the Jews/Judaism/Torah Observant obedient to God Jews..Having a Hebrew name does not make one a Jew. The Jews consider the Zionists enemies and blame them for the bloodshed in the ME..No one believes the Bible Prophesy because in Zach 12 13 and 14..it reads that God Himself gathers the nations to go against Israel..and then Jesus steps in to save them and they will realize that they pierced their own God and all of Israel will be saved..but only one third of them will go into the millenial kingdom and the rest will be destroyed.. THe Jews feel that the US has made Israel their golden calf..THe Zioinists are in control of us..the Rothschilds..the Rockefellers..it’s a thirteen family operation..Rothschilds are also behind the NWO/.Communists/Secret Societies such as the Free Masons..Bilderbergs ..Vril and the Thule in Germany. Jews feel that they are living in a Marxist Israel..an Israeli bill presented last year would make it illegal to draw comparisons to Nazism..

GUZ75, Mr Guy Slator, having read your profile page here, I must suggest that you consider not using your most common site name when casting turds at other members here. Especially since you used the same site name with your Twitter account. Just go be a twit somewhere else.

Well, they both end in totalitarianism, but there are differences. They mostly end up at the same place because communism can never attain it’s goals of being a classless society. (Someone ends up being in charge). But I guess in the grand scheme of things the differences are trivial. Niether respects individual liberty or that our rights come from a higher authority than man.

Given the Smoke and Mirrors and international Lefty ties of the Obama Administration, I do not question Israel’s concern . Israel is a small country surrounded by countries who wish to destroy it. ( maybe the Israelis can ferret out Obama’s hidden records )…..

No doubt Israel must keep a good watch on B. Hussein. B. Hussein would sell Israel out in a heartbeat to Israel’s “friendly” neighbors if he got the chance and Israel wants proof if this happens.
