A Crane, A Pool, and A House — What Could Go Wrong? This…

It’s common for small cranes to deliver and install pools. But you have to know that if we’re writing a story about it, something went horribly wrong.
On Friday, during a routing install, the crane delivering a pool in Minnesota over extended, tipping over and crashing into the house below:
WCCO-TV has more:
The pool’s weight was too much for the crane and it caused the crane to collapse onto the garage. In the fall, the crane took out the chimney and the pool hit a new fence.
“At that point, what can you do?” Krause said. “Your Friday went backwards.”
By Saturday evening, the pool was in its proper place, and the crane had been removed. However, the accident is one home improvement mishap that those involved will likely remember.
The homeowners said an electrical short in the crane may have caused it to extend farther than it should while carrying that kind of weight.
They had a good attitude about the damage and said they were new to the area and this allowed them to meet their neighbors.
The station’s full report is worth watching, as it has audio of the incident, which might be just as good as the video:

The horror of the Democrat mind.

Posted on June 15, 2011 at 2:22pmThat’s a modern crane–at least it appears so, so the computer at the operators controls must have been fouled up. It reads boom angles, gives weights and would have sounded an alarm if he boomed down too far–it does sound like a technical, shall I say, “glitch” occurred. JMHO

Posted on June 15, 2011 at 2:21pmA crane that new has a computerized “load moment indicator” that gives the operator the angle, radius, weight of load as well as the maximum capacity….The only way something like this happens is a. ground pressure shift. b. a gust of wind side loads the boom or c. the operator “turned the key” and overrode the LMI. Usually it is c. There is a very remote chance it could be electircal but the problem probably didn’t just show up, It has probably been having mishaps and they didn’t want to take time to fix it.

Posted on June 15, 2011 at 1:19pmI believe the weight imbalance was caused by the finger of Jesus on the end of that crane.

Posted on June 15, 2011 at 2:22pm“The homeowners said an electrical short in the crane may have caused it to extend farther than it should while carrying that kind of weight.”
——————————————————————————————-
ALL cranes have a ‘load chart’ fixed to the side of it where the operator can see it. Doesn’t matter much, though, if no one knows how to use it. Relying on the electronic safety gagets to keep the crane from tipping is stupid and lazy.
Report Post »Just like all the gadgets car makers install in their cars now. So the car warns you when your about to crash or drives the car or parks the car for the driver.

Looks like it was a union operator operating a union built crane. Way To Go Unions, really earning your money aren’t you.

Posted on June 15, 2011 at 3:22pmOperator error. It is as simple as that. He did not follow the load charts, and the electrical glitch is where he bypassed the boom limit. If someone were killed, he probably be going to jail.

side ways ik OK when picking up, but lifting over the house they shoukd have reset the extenders. to the rear.
lazyness? incompetence ? or maybe both.
