‘A Difference in Philosophy’: Paul Ryan Gives Epic Speech in Support of Free Enterprise

House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan has usually cast himself as the voice of reason in debates. Which is to say that Ryan isn’t typically known for raising his voice or getting excited about topics very often, preferring the comfort of impartial statistics to polemical or ideological argumentation.

Yet today, Ryan threw off that image a bit and revealed a surprisingly convincing passionate side, in a speech that had National Review’s Robert Costa wondering if Ryan was rehearsing for a Republican National Convention speech. And if he was, could it be the coveted Vice Presidential slot that many are speculating Ryan is a frontrunner to receive?

Ryan certainly sounded grand-scale, Vice Presidential notes in the speech. “We’ve got to get out of the game of Washington picking winners and losers in the tax code,” Ryan exclaimed. “Because what we do is we stifle that entrepreneur who doesn’t have connections, but can actually have an idea and make a business and grow. We want to remove those barriers to opportunity. We want to remove those barriers to upward mobility. We want a system of entrepreneurs where we have true, entrepreneurial capitalism, not this crony capitalism.”

So does Ryan sound like your kind of Vice President? Watch the speech below and decide for yourself whether Ryan is ready for prime time.

I use to think because of his budget, the Dems would have a field day going after him but no matter who he picks, he will be attacked. Ryan does have more chemistry with Romney than the others so I’m beginning to think Ryan would be one of the best picks.

You are probably right. I was not wanting Ryan even though I like him alot because of the granny over the cliff false ads. The perception politics had me scared but maybe I am not giving him enough credit to defend himself against what are basicly silly ads aimed at the ignorant. He would be the best person to explain the financial problems we have ……………..the big question is whether enough people are ready and willing to face the truth.
You hear very little about the financial situation of our country on the news chanels. It should be the number one story.

He is a stand up guy as well, he is my Congressman, I have met him numerous times and he is the real deal. He is very much like Scott Walker and the new breed of Conservatives that Wisconsin is pumping out. Clean, no scandals, not willing to compromise on their beliefs and actual Conservatives. Wisconsin may be credited with the creation of the Progressives but we have fixed that and birthed the new generation of true Conservatives.

Typical Ryan rhetoric. However his budget plan did not balance the federal budget for 10 years. At the end of the day there needs to be a two part plan. Balance the current budgets and come up with a separate mechanism for paying off the $15 trillion the baby boomer generation has run up in deficits. Now since it is their spending and they benefited from it. They should pay for it. Any serious and rational adult knows that both of these things cannot be accomplished by simply cutting spending. There needs to be a tax increase, particularly on the high income and tax dodgers like Romney which can be earmarked to pay down the deficits. Once that is announced the reaction in the markets will be so positive, Romney and his scofflaw buddies will make up the difference in capital gains.

Jrook, I appreciate your comments, and while we may disagree on most things I find myself in partial agreement with you – in substance if not detail. I would qualify a few things though:

      1. Money, i.e. revenue, must be had to pay both the government operation and principle debt.
      2. We spend more than we take in.
      3. The rich do not dodge taxes – except a few like GM – they pay upwards of 15-38% or higher in income taxes alone, then there are other investment taxes on top of the investment income tax and a myriad of double and sometimes triple taxes on the same monies.

While initially raising taxes will increase revenues, over the course of less than one year those same revenues will fall to below the levels previous to the tax increase; which they will stabilize at. This effect happens every time we are on the trailing side of the curve – which we are. Peak revenues occur at approximately 15% “total” tax rate; we are far above that, in some areas the total tax rate is pushing 65% of all incomes. Total taxes include state and local taxes. These statements come from studies macro economics. The curve is tax rate vs growth and revenue.

When you drop taxes suddenly there is a subsequent drop in revenue for a short period of time, i.e. usually 2-6 months depending on the severity of the tax drop; but after that short period, within one quarter, the growth stimulation will offset any revenue lost. Some areas that try this approach will see their revenue triple or more

      Generalized accusatory statement (typical)
Question asserted to put the person on the defensive with no intention on accepting any answer given.
Outrages example of a question that doesn’t relate to the topic at hand.

      How to properly berate someone.

If you did your home work and actually understood how free markets work you’d know the answer to your mispunctuated question.

Though your assertion that arguing the point about something that no one provides as product or creates for consumption as an example how ridiculous his argument/speach was, shows one of two things. You either are a hard core socialist and just want to berate anyone who disagrees with your idea of how everything should be because you can’t argue your point effectively or your just some ignorant person who flops along in life without wanting or caring to know truth.

    ((1) Minimum Living Wage.
If every working person could pay for their own Health care, their own retirement, their own basic need, their own taxes, government ( tax payers ) won’t have to.

    (2) No Corporate income tax, capitol gains tax
If Corporations pay their fair share ( a living wage ), they don’t need to pay taxes. ( when they pay employees – the employees pay taxes )

Why punish Corporations for investing in the U.S.A., don’t tax them for creating jobs.

    (3) No Freebies, shrink government pool of money to give away
Government programs pay for themselves and only for themselves.

There is no such thing as free, someone always pays for it.

If you want to fly, you pay to be inspected

If the Boarders were closed and anything crossing the boarder was inspected and charged for that inspection at no cost to the Tax payer

The National parks will be ‘ok’ if no one goes there, only the visitors cause the problem, charge them not me.

National Endowment for the Arts, government does not need to take money from me to tell me what art is, “ Hollywood ” can do that

Problem – we don’t have enough inspector ( crops, beef, chicken, safety, boarder, etc..) charge those that need inspected, not the taxpayer ( if i don’t eat chicken, why should I pay to have it inspected )

Ryan summed up a lot in a little. Every time in the 20th century that we got out of the poor house, was because taxes were lowered on the rich. That, with security of taxes staying down, the little man with a big idea got people…rich people…to back him up.

1920 unemployment was 15%….Harding/Coolidge drastically cut taxes of the rich: ta-da, in one and a half years, 3% unemployment, and the Roaring Twenties. Electric egg-beaters, more homes with phones, refrigeration, etc, etc. Same thing in the 50s, the 80s.

Mankind has a mind that can help or hurt. If I have any invention, I can at least try to get somebody interested over a cost-effective 3 year period. That is, I ‘used’ to be able to. Now, the government controls what They think is important to invent.

Energy is where it is ultimately at. Also, we need oil, coal, etc, in the meantime to keep us going while in the next 25 years, the oil companies, among others, get a clean energy idea from me, or you, to actualize.

Truth: A very close friend of mine invented the lights that are used in the operating rooms. Yes, for heart surgeries, whatever. He also invented the hydraulic system for the ‘bed’ you are on During the operation, also used around the world. He too, invented something in the Alaskan Pipeline stress breakers, as for oil not to leak.

The wings on the woman’s head on the Mercury Dime, stood for ‘Freedom of Thought’.

    Now?

If the Ronbots won’t stand with us, they (like the rest of the country) will get the gov’t they deserve. I think they believe they will be able to say “I told you so”, but they‘ll be getting loaded into the boxcars with the rest of us and we probably won’t feel much like ****-chat.

I get what you are trying to do. Listen, most of us Paul folks do not vote out of fear, we vote out of conscience. Personnally, i CANNOT cast a vote for a moderate or progressive candidate. If you want to convince us, tell us why Romney deserves our vote.

A vote should not be given, it should be earned

@soy – so if we can’t turn back the clock on 100 years of liberalism in one election, you will just sit back and wait to get loaded in the boxcars?

      Yeah, that‘ll show’em.

      Good plan.

In the grand scheme of things, Romney is marginally better than Obama. That does not satisfy me. Romney would be president for 4 years and then 4 years of democrat or we will have 8 full years of Romney. If that is the case, stick a fork in us

You think we have that kind of time? You are delusional. I am willing to compromise, but i draw the line in the sand with Rand Paul, Jim Demint, and Amash….Anything less is a vote for the status quo

I don’t know what happens with Romney as president. I don‘t think he’s going to save us – we are going to have to save ourselves.

But I do know we don’t survive another term of Obama. And if that doesn’t matter to you, then you aren’t delusional, you are just as anti-American as they are.

Personally, I want Romney to be forced to compromise – with Rand Paul and Ted Cruz and Jim Demint. I think we can do that.

But to sit back and let the country be destroyed is just sick. I’m not kidding – this is Germany 1932. You want to let Hilter come to power – I don’t.

Don‘t tell me I’m delusional – you are living in a dream world if you don’t think it can, and will, happen here.
