ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Casey Anthony walked out of jail a free woman under heavy guard early Sunday, facing shouts of “baby killer” from a heckling crowd only days after a nation in rapt attention watched as she was acquitted of murder in the death of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee.
The 25-year-old woman, who had spent years in the spotlight’s glare including two months of nationally televised trial proceedings, swiftly boarded an SUV and rode out of public view, her destination unknown as new questions unfolded as to what her future would hold.
Wearing a snug pink Polo T-shirt, blue jeans and sneakers, Anthony walked briskly from the Orlando area jail at 12:14 a.m. with her attorney, Jose Baez, at her side.
Her hair in a bun, a somber-looking Anthony quietly said “thank you” to a deputy sheriff waiting to escort her outside, and then strode with Baez to the vehicle as two deputies armed with semi-automatic rifles walked behind. Baez held the back door, she climbed in and the SUV drove off amid camera light flashes.
As Anthony‘s SUV left the jail’s parking lot, the crowd of more than 100 people surged against the orange plastic police barricades and some yelled “You suck!” Mounted patrolman and police cruisers blocked the street outside the jail so Anthony’s vehicle could drive onto a nearby highway ramp unobstructed.
“A baby killer was just set free!” Bree Thornton, 39, shouted at the passing SUV.
When Anthony was acquitted July 5 of murder in the death of her toddler, hundreds of thousands of people captivated by the case – and doubtful of her credibility – poured their rage into postings on Facebook and the micro-blogging site Twitter. Those and other social media sites provided a platform and a vast audience for a decibel level of vitriol seldom seen before.
Since her acquittal on murder charges, Anthony had been finishing her four-year sentence for telling investigators several lies, including an early claim that Caylee was kidnapped by a nonexistent nanny. With credit for the nearly three years she’d spent in jail since August 2008 and good behavior, she had only days remaining when she was sentenced July 7.
Early Sunday, news helicopters followed the SUV to a covered parking garage at an Orlando office building where one of her attorneys, Cheney Mason, has offices. The SUV didn’t re-emerge, and it could not been seen in the darkness if Anthony was in any of the cars that appeared in the area.
A short time later, amid the crush of media attention, there was police activity as two vehicles pulled up to a twin-engine private jet at Orlando Executive Airport but no one saw Anthony get out and onto the plane. That plane took off shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday for Ohio, the home state of Anthony’s parents. But an official there said that aircraft was only carrying golfers back from a Florida vacation.
Anthony, it seemed, had vanished into the night.
Baez and jail officials declined to say where Anthony would go next.
After three years behind bars, Anthony was given $537.68 in cash from her jail account to begin her new life.
For nearly two months, the murder trial of Casey Anthony was a living entity. It breathed daily across the nation’s television airwaves, then was reinforced nightly on cable TV programs that dissected every word uttered in the courtroom and fueled speculation on her fate.
Baez, in a brief statement to reporters, signaled a new chapter was opening in the Casey Anthony case.
“It is my hope that Casey Anthony can receive the counseling and treatment she needs to move forward with the rest of her life,” Baez said in the statement.
Certainly, she still faces anger and ire around the nation that brought tight security for Sunday’s release.
“This release had an unusual amount of security so, therefore, in that sense, it would not be a normal release,” Orange County Jail spokesman Allen Moore said. “We have made every effort to not provide any special treatment for her. She’s been treated like every other inmate.”
Moore said there were no known threats received at the jail. Yet officials had a number of contingency plans in place, including plans in case shots were fired as she was being released.
More than a dozen corrections officers, most wearing bullet proof vests, patrolled the outside of the jail before Anthony’s release. Half-dozen officers wearing riot helmets were mounted on horses, and some corrections officials carried semi-automatic weapons.
The crowd included about a half-dozen, sign-carrying protesters who had gathered despite a drenching thunderstorm Saturday night. Before Anthony’s release, the evening took on a feel of New Year’s Eve as spectators checked their watches regularly and announced how many minutes until midnight. Onlookers had varied reactions to her release.
“She is safer in jail than she is out here,” said Mike Quiroz, who drove from Miami to spend his 22nd birthday outside the jail. “She better watch her butt. She is known all over the world.”
Lamar Jordan said he felt a pit in his stomach when he saw Anthony walking free.
“The fact that she is being let out, the fact that it is her child and she didn’t say what happened, made me sick,” Jordan said.
Not all of those who gathered condemned the 25-year-old.
“I’m for Casey,” said Kizzy Smith, of Orlando. “She was proven innocent. At the end of the day, Caylee is at peace. We’re the ones who are in an uproar.”
The case drew national attention ever since Caylee was reported missing. Cable network HLN aired the entire trial. Vitriol poured into social networking sites after the acquittal, with observers posting angry messages on Twitter and Facebook’s “I Hate Casey Anthony” page.
Outraged lawmakers in several states responded by proposing so-called Caylee‘s laws that would allow authorities to prosecute parents who don’t quickly report missing children.
And many still speculate about what really happened to Caylee, whose remains were found in December 2008 near the home Casey Anthony shared with her parents: Was she suffocated with duct tape by her mother, as prosecutors argued? Or did she drown in an accident that snowballed out of control, as defense attorneys contended?
Now that she is free, it’s not clear where Anthony will stay or what she will do next.
Her relationship with her parents, George and Cindy, has been strained since defense attorneys accused George Anthony of molesting Casey when she was young. Baez argued during trial that the alleged abuse resulted in psychological issues that caused her to lie and act without apparent remorse after Caylee’s death.
Defense attorneys also said George Anthony made Caylee’s death look like a homicide after the girl accidentally drowned in the family pool. But defense attorneys never called witnesses to support their claims.
George Anthony has adamantly denied covering up his granddaughter’s death or molesting Casey Anthony when she was a child.
Prosecutors alleged that Anthony suffocated her daughter with duct tape because motherhood interfered with her desire for a carefree life of partying with friends and spending time with her boyfriend. However, some jurors have told various media outlets that the state didn’t prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt as required for a conviction – though some have said they believe she bears some responsibility in the case.

Posted on July 18, 2011 at 5:18amOkay, the author needs to lay off the word vitriol—vitriol is most often used in the context of hatred being undeserved. Bottom line is the jury had enough to convict her, but decided to pretend they were on CSI and even idiotically engaged in an unproven and not backed at all theory that she drowned based on their dislike of George and George alone. That’s dereliction of duty—-however, they are the final word, so be it. I hope this woman enjoys the prison of not being able to leave the house ever.

Posted on July 18, 2011 at 12:13pmMARCI……the jury had enough to convict her?! Really? The prosecution needs to prove without a reasonable doubt that she’s guilty. The prosecution did not do that. The jury found her not guilty….case closed, story closed. This has been our, The United States of America, judicial system for many, many years. Everybody has an opinion but the law is the law, plain and simple. She’s free cause she was found not guilty by a jury of her peers. Now can we drop it? She’ll never be behind bars unless she commits another crime but not for the murder of her daughter. People need to move on. Complain all you want about how this and that is wrong, bottom line is she’s out of jail. Deal with it!!!

Frankly, I wish people would just stop talking about her and put the focus on other children missing or killed by their caretaker. I watched the trial as much as I could, and frankly, if I had been on the jury I would not have convicted her of 1st degree murder based on the evidence. Unfortunately, it just was not there.

It’s not that “chic criminals are always hot,” it’s just that the media only pats attention to the “hot” ones. Thousands of children die every day, thousands of women disappear or are murdered but the only ones who make the news are the Casey Anthoney’s, Lacy Peterson‘s and Natalie Holloway’s. Just another example of what our news “media” has turned into.

Posted on July 17, 2011 at 10:25amMichael – those who watched it on television, KNOW the facts of the case – even better than the jury, thanks to the commentators. This is what is causing all the outrage! When 99.999% of Americans watching it on TV came to a personal verdict of “guilty beyond a reasonable doubt”, it is UNTHINKABLE that twelve out of twelve people charged with that duty came to a DIFFERENT verdict. The odds are ASTRONOMICAL!!
That is why people are outraged… frustrated… confused.
Had they NOT seen the trial live on TV, they would have to rely on the jury’s verdict and the hearsay of those who WERE present for the entire trial.
There is a DEAD… INNOCENT… BABY !!!
That is beyond objectionable to people.
Then, when members of the jury start telling us that “partying” is not a motive for murder!??!?
Well, then people are annoyed by the jury as well.
MOST Americans CAN conceive of a MONSTER who would rather kill their own baby than give up a partying lifestyle. PLUS, the preponderance of evidence pointed to EXACTLY that motive.
When two opposing ideas conflict, there is psychological and emotional conflict while people try to resolve the dichotomy in their minds. As you point out, the Constitution established out legal system. That’s ONE side. Then, the conflicting side is what I pointed to above… a seemingly open-and-shut case, exacerbated by jurors dismissing evidence and dismissing motive, simply because they did not understand it, or did not want to believe it was poss

The jury heard what was presented by the lawyers and if you have a problem with the verdict your beef is with the lawyers and what they presented.
This is the problem with many Americans, they think that being told what to think and believe is somehow them coming to a decision of their own. Typically they are guided either left or right in political thinking, but in this case they were guided to expect a verdict that was impossible to prove. Move on to your next cause. I would bet you are hateful of George Soros and stand with Israel. GB did a good job telling you what to think on those points.

Posted on July 17, 2011 at 12:14pmThe sad facts of our judicial system is that it allows information overload. Defense attorneys know that often too much information can make it difficult to sift through it all and sort the relevant from the less relevant. minor doubt or uncertainties can be blown up to seem like significant doubts. That is what happened. Those who watched on TV were not distracted by the avalanche of minor facts and myriad contradictory hypotheses put forward by the defense. The simply truth shone out: There is no logical explanation for what we know she did except that she was complicit in the death of her child, a death that cannot credibly be supposed an accident.
This woman is guilty. The judge failed to properly instruct the jury to use their common sense and instead allowed them to think it was their job to ignore it. Hearing the words of jurors after the trial you know they believed she was guilty but didn’t think there was enough evidence legally. The simple truth is, if after sitting through that trial they thought she was guilty then there was enough evidence. We saw it, and we saw them see it. They just didn’t know their instincts were enough to convict.

Those bloodthirsty Casey mobs would have been the same mobs in the 12th Century who showed up jeering at public executions. Yes, in those good old barbaric days, the mobs came to yell & get whipped up to a frenzy, cheering when the condemned got their intestines cut out while still alive and their head lopped off and placed on a pike for all to see. Posted on July 17, 2011 at 8:20amWhat’s really sad is the media (Fox, Blaze and everyone else) continue to give her the attention, what the media should do is talk about this for another 14 weeks because there just isn’t any good news stories, like the Christians being murdered around the world on a daily basis, or Hamas bombing Israel, continued disasters around the world. Everything is peachy o.k., nothing to see here, move along, move along. The Media and our government have turned into a bunch of cowardice, sympathetic, lying, immoral, blind, morons. The only thing that will save this country is God and as soon as people trust Him and not who will be the next President to save us, then and only then will He turn things around. The President, congress, NWO, money, jobs, self satisfaction, a new person in the White House, nothing will work. God MUST be restored to our nation to save us from absolute disaster and to think otherwise is a absolute delusion at best. Prayer for our nation will do more than voting! TAKE GOD OUT OF AMERICA AND GOD WILL TAKE AMERICA OUT!!!

Posted on July 17, 2011 at 8:09amIt is an outrage that the media blew this up to the national hysteria it has become. Commentators, lawyers, judges, and RINOs from both lame stream media and fox news convicted this women in the Press long before the trial was over. This shows the sad, sad, sad condition of the mass of people who believe everything they hear and see from the Press. Think about it! That is why we have BO in the White House. We are a nation of followers and beggers. A nation of serfs or serf want-a-be’s. In the Casey Anthony case the only saving grace here is that the jury was sequestered from the media onslaught and made a decision based on the facts.

You are wrong. This guilty yet one-time mom was not flirting. When she came thru that door and saw the guard wearing a bullet-proof vest while holding an automatic rifle, she knew right then her fate and how serious her situation of “so-called” freedom was. If that wasn’t a sign to her of what her future will be like, I don’t know what you would call it.

YouMayAllGoToHellImGoingToTexas
Posted on July 17, 2011 at 8:53amHow can you fail to explain “reasonable doubt” The law is very clear in what reasonable doubt is and most reasonable people understand it… The Jury admitted she is a bad person but they are only there to judge the case as it was defined by the State and admissible evidence presented… the point is valid that the State did a bad job of presenting its case. I think it did so because the press was building this up so much that they thought this was a slam dunk… Blame the State, even the prosecutor knows he made a mistake after losing this case how does he ever work again… Oh yea… He retired…

The way it was explained to me(By the Judge) when I sat on a jury is that “If you consider yourself to be
A reasonable, non-judgmental person and the evidence presented to you leads you to believe the
accused is guilty then the guilt has been proved beyond reasonable doubt.”
There does not have to be a “Smoking Gun” but if you doubt the person committed the crime
Report Post »than reasonable doubt has not been met.

Actually, I think many simply don’t understand this. Many talk about a “shadow of a doubt” as if any hypothetical doubt is enough to aquit. Reasonable doubt means a belief that a reasonable argument can be made hpw the defendant isn’t guilty.
One of the problems is the excessive focus on the evidence presented and the jurors judgment of how it “proves” the guilt of the accused. This presumes the jurors are meant to be able to logically diagram how all the evidence proves the prosecutions case. Rather, thre jury should be looking for ways to reasonably disprove their case. “Innocent until proven guilty” is how a jury must begin a trial, but when it come to deliberating the verdict the way formal arguments are evaluated is to look for disproofs. If no way is found to disprove a proposal the proof is established. it works this way in science and is supposed to work that way in law. If, after hearing all the evidenc, the jury could find no way to reasonably suppose the defendant’s innocence they should have convicted.
