‘A Nation of Moochers’: Is the ‘Take Care of Me’ Society ‘Wrecking the USA?’

I recently interviewed Milwaukee radio talk host Charles Sykes about his new book “A Nation of Moochers: America’s Addiction to Getting Something for Nothing.”

A Nation of Moochers: Is the Take Care of Me Society Wrecking the USA? | Charles Sykes

The folks over at The Fiscal Times have also talked to Sykes — here’s how they set up the conversation:

You’ve played by the rules. Worked hard to put yourself through school. You’ve gotten a decent job and you pay your taxes.

You’re faithfully paying down your mortgage and saving money in a 401(k) – all to secure your finances and your future. But now there are a lot more “takers” than “makers” in this country – and the impact is systemic and long-lasting.

A prevalent new “moocher culture” is changing the character of this nation – that’s the core message of A Nation of Moochers: America’s Addiction to Getting Something for Nothing, a new book by Charles J. Sykes, senior fellow at the Wisconsin Policy Research Institute and the author of six previous books.

“This has been the flash point in American politics for the last several years,” Sykes toldThe Fiscal Times in an interview this week. “In the wake of the Great Recession, we’ve shifted from a culture of celebrating and encouraging those who are productive and hardworking, to a culture where handouts, bailouts, freebies and entitlements dominate.

You start to wonder, Why am I paying the freight for those who have been reckless and irresponsible, whether it’s on Wall Street or in Washington or anywhere else in the community? I think we’re becoming a very different nation.”

You will want to read their interview here.

GBTV subscribers can see my in-depth video interview with Sykes as part of Friday’s show here.

For everyone else — here’s an excerpt!  Sykes is not a fan of governments giving tax incentives to big Hollywood movie production.  I ask him to explain:

In 2003, Hillary Clinton said: (about the Bush administration)
“I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration somehow you’re not patriotic. We should stand up and say we are Americans and we have a right to debate and disagree with any administration.”

SO, WHY are we called “Racist” when we disagree in any way with the Obama Administration???

An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before, but had recently failed an entire class. That class had insisted that Obama’s socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.
The professor then said, “OK, we will have an experiment in this class on Obama’s plan”. All grades will be averaged and everyone will receive the same grade so no one will fail and no one will receive an A….
After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy. As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little.
The second test average was a D! No one was happy. When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F. As the tests proceeded, the scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else. To their great surprise, ALL FAILED and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed. It could not be any simpler than that.

Got screwed in 2007 when home owners abandoned their new homes and left us holding the bag, got screwed again when the stock market collapsed in 2008 and yet again to this day with higher prices of everything. One more drop is all ith will take this time around and more makers will move to the takers column. Its a cascade effect we are watching but its in slow mo as its happening month to month year to year since 2007. Once the EU drops dead its over here at home.

      @db321…
As a person of INDIAN decent… (I prefer “Indian” – not “native American”)
      I resent being called “dependent!”
Were my ancestors treated wrong? HECK YEAH !
Do I personally sit on my butt and whine that somebody treated somebody else wrong and the wronged person was related to me, so I don’t ever have to work or do anything but let others take care of me – ostensibly distant relatives of those who did the wrong-doing to people to whom I was related? (DEAD people, by the way)
      NOPE !
I pull myself up by my own bootstraps (or moccasin straps if you prefer ! LOL)
Government programs have indeed created an environment of dependency that exists EVEN TODAY in the day of “casino tribes.” Some tribes have no casinos and are recipient of government food, money, housing, schooling, social-services, health ‘clinics’, etc. and live in conditions you would not.
They don’t know a way out.
They get just enough from the socialists in government that they can survive. However, in order for them to improve themselves, they would have to go work 40 hours a week like the rest of us. That would give them a job (IF THEY COULD FIND ONE) that pays minimum wage. When you do the math, they would come out ahead by a hundred or two hundred a month in exchange for 160+ hours of work. That equates to ONE DOLLAR / HOUR.
Now, tell me… WHAT IS THEIR MOTIVE to get OUT OF DEPENDENCY??

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years.
Great nations rise and fall. The people go from bondage to spiritual truth, to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back again to bondage.

This is a very true article. It’s not even something that can be controversial, as the evidence sits in front of us every day, many times out “occupying” places demanding more and more of our lives be spent on their behalf.

We don’t have to follow the socialist model of going into the moocher column though, when we get fed up. Rather, we form our own economy outside of their tax and regulatory schemes, and starve the Beast to death. Takes a lot of courage to do though, and how many arm chair warriors these days has actual real life courage to his convictions?

Their idea of how things should be done is killing Europe at this moment. Their idea of how things should be done will kill America.

Past history proves that all Republics die. They die because the people demand more than the Republic can deliver. The worst thing about Republics is the politicians can buy peoples votes, right up until the Republic falls.

Consumerism is America’s new favorite past time.

As time has gone on, the line between a “need” and a “want” have been merged. Now when people say they “need” something what they really mean is they “want something so badly it seems like a need.”

This is something that the average American MUST take responsibility for. We continue to vote in politicians who are fine being the leader of an economy that is based in consumerism and not production.

Also look at how many fat people there are in this country. So many people don’t care how they look so they continue to stuff their mouths with unhealthy food and then claim ignorance or blame their habits on others. Or worse they flat out admit that they know they are being stupid by eating garbage and not working out, yet they care so little about themselves and their appearance that they continue on in their jolly merry way.

Look at how much reality garbage is watched nowadays. It was bad enough when a decent chunk of reality shows were based around some form of talent but now we have crap like “dance moms” and “jersey shore” where people knowingly go on TV and act like a moron for fame. To make matters worse, we then have viewers who want to emulate these sickos and buy the products they peddle such as perfume, clothing and books.

It is time we as Americans expect more from ourselves as a whole before we expect more out of our politicians. Sadly, the average American is stupid and enjoys being un

I’m not trying to absolve politicians, throw them all out.

What I‘m saying is politicians won’t get better if we don’t get better.

I’m saying I wish people exhibited that personal responsibility we hear so much from people when it comes to their own lives.

And to say I have contempt for them is silly because…..I want them to choose healthier and more educated lifestyles instead of being fine while they’re 50 lbs overweight, eating a twinkie while watching Jersey Shore.

Is this everyone in the US? Of course not, but it’s a shocking number and continuing to grow.

The problem with a lot of people is they blame the politicians, or the banks, or anybody else. Yes, they are partly to blame but so are we as a society.

Yes the government and bank made it horribly easy to get a home, but the society on a whole were the ones who bought homes knowing they couldn’t afford it ESPECIALLY if something bad happened to the economy.

The libs and progressives have had this in the works for decades. Their plan was first to get blacks on welfare and get them addicted so they had a voter base that would never go away. Then they fed on the hate and class warefare to get to the point we are at now. Even if WE THE PEOPLE put a boot to the governments ass, it will take a century or more for the US to get back to what she should be. Mark my words on this, when the libs know they are going to lose, they will bring war on us all.

“This has been the flash point in American politics for the last several years,” Sykes toldThe Fiscal Times in an interview this week. “In the wake of the Great Recession, we’ve shifted from a culture of celebrating and encouraging those who are productive and hardworking, to a culture where handouts, bailouts, freebies and entitlements dominate.”
How can that culture [of entitlement] be the CAUSE of the economic weakness of America if it we supposedly shifted to this supposed culture as the dominant one “in the wake of the Great Recession”? How can something be CAUSED by that which you are arguing it PREDICATED??

There is a danger of becoming a ‘moocher’ society, but I doubt if it will ever happen. The majority of Americans understand the importance of relying on yourself to get through life. You cannot depend on the government, a truism that is becoming more and more obvious with all these failing progressive entitlement programs. Eventually, the people will tire of supporting all the freeloaders and vote those who do so out of office.
