A New Palestinian State Could Deny Citizenship to 45 Percent of All Palestinian Refugees

As the Palestinian Authority scrambles for UN recognition of an independent state, few have mentioned the apparently very real possibility that, if successful, nearly half of the world’s Palestinian refugees — including those currently residing inside “Palestine” — will not be granted citizenship in the newly formed state.

Commentary Magazine pointed out that in a shocking interview for the Lebanese Daily Star,  Palestine’s ambassador to Lebanon, Abdullah Abdullah, emphatically stated that Palestinian refugees the world over would not become citizens of any UN-recognized, newborn Palestinian state. What’s more, Abdullah clarifies that the restriction would not only apply to refugees in countries like Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, Jordan or any of the other 132 countries where Abdullah alleges Palestinians reside, but would even include “Palestinian refugees who are living in [refugee camps] inside the [Palestinian] state.” According to Abdullah, “They are still refugees. They will not be considered citizens.”

The Star adds:

Abdullah said that the new Palestinian state would “absolutely not” be issuing Palestinian passports to refugees. Neither this definitional status nor U.N. statehood, Abdullah says, would affect the eventual return of refugees to Palestine.

“How the issue of the right of return will be solved I don’t know, it’s too early [to say], but it is a sacred right that has to be dealt with and solved [with] the acceptance of all.” He says statehood “will never affect the right of return for Palestinian refugees.”

…

“When we have a state accepted as a member of the United Nations, this is not the end of the conflict. This is not a solution to the conflict. This is only a new framework that will change the rules of the game.”

Meanwhile, according to the Star, the Palestinian Liberation Organization would be the governing body in charge of dealing with the issue of Palestinian refugees and Abdullah says that the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) would continue its work as usual.

Commentary Magazine points out, however, that according to UNRWA, 689,000 of the West Bank’s 2.4 million Palestinians and 1.1 million of Gaza’s 1.5 million Palestinians are considered refugees. Which means that aside from the 2.9 million Diaspora refugees, a staggering 45 percent of a new Palestinian state’s residents would, in fact, remain stateless, thereby being deprived of both citizenship and the services it would afford.

Commentary’s Evelyn Gordon adds:

This is simply unbelievable. For years, the world has backed a Palestinian state on the grounds Palestinians are stateless people who deserve a country of their own. And now, a senior Palestinian official has announced once they have received a state, most Palestinians will stillbe stateless – even those who actually live in “Palestine.”

Moreover, the new state won’t provide these residents with any services: It expects UNRWA – or, more accurately, the American and European taxpayers who provide the bulk of that organization’s funding – to continue providing their schooling, healthcare, welfare allowances, etc.

Gordon perhaps summed it up best when explaining that the PA probably finds refugees, rather than citizens, a more useful tool in realizing its ultimate goal of destroying Israel, as they can then demand “refugees” be resettled in Israel (as opposed to their own prospective territories), thereby creating a disproportionate and destructive demographic for the Jewish state.

      1) USA is the best friend of Israel.
      FACT: USA plays Israel & Arabs alike selling weapons to both and preventing the peace. If not for US pressure Israel would be still in charge of Suez and Palestinian Arabs happily living in Jordan.

      2) UN is good for world and USA
      FACT: imagine if USA did not have a veto power and we were to submit to the MAJORITY (Chinese + Indians + muslims). Only Ron Paul proposed to take us out of UN.

      3) Ron Paul is not good for Israel or the poor
      FACT: Ron Paul was one of few politicians who defended Israel‘s bombing of Iraqi nuclear reactor in 80’s when USA government officially objected (because USA was arming its new secret friends at the time – Saddam and bin Laden.)

      Bonus: free-market capitalism is good for everyone (even the poor) compared to socialism, Sharia law or today’s crony capitalism.

      Palestinians do not want statehood for their people, they want Palestine in order to shrink Israel a little further. If they get a state, they will not stop their ultimate goal of destroying Israel. This whole thing is for that purpose only.     Gee let me see IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY, so after they get their own state, country or what ever they will be calling themselves they still want America and Europe to keep paying for their healthcare, schooling for their kids and to keep feeding them, in a word NO not only no but HELL NO!!!!!!!!

    Now let’s not forget this is coming from the people who call America the great SATAN but i guess were not that bad that we can still spend billions of dollars for their up keep so does that now make us the little Satan then???? or are we just STUPID to spend money on these oxygen thieves in the first place, my vote is yes we are STUPID to spend one penny on these people who want to destroy our country and our way of life.

    When gengis khan went into that part of the world, he tried trading with them at first. They cut of the heads of his messengers so he went in and killed somewhere around 5 million of them. They eventually got the message and served him. I don’t think these people are just going to give up easily.

    The PLO started as a terror organization. The still have a terror arm.
    The west bank is only stable; because, Israel controls it.
    Hamas controls Gaza and is a terror group closely aligned, and likely controlled by, with Iran.
    Returning to 1967 borders would be suicide for Israel and result in 100s of thousands of not millions of otherwise avoidable deaths in the region.
    The bid for statehood is a sham.
    Even their application logo Israel wiped off the map.
    Next time Obama speaks he needs to be clear that Israel has an undeniable right to exist, and that no negotiations are possible without first genuinely accepting that fact.
    It is up to the Palestinians to prove they have accepted Israels right to exist, by deeds not words.

    As long as the PLO is the organization requesting statehood and negotiating with everyone, there is no real chance for long term peace. Before the West Bank Palestinians can travel a worthwhile path to statehood, in Gaza, they most end the rule of the PLO; and, vote in a party that does not have it’s roots in terror; and, be willing to peacefully share the West Bank with Israel.

    Before Gaza can be given statehood, Hamas, and the other terror organizations there, must be completely wiped out – no faked surrenders should be accepted; and, the terrorists only choices should be exodus or death.

    Anyone with any intellectual capacity at all knows that when, not if, “Palestinians” are given their own sovereign state, that state’s only real goal will be to continue ongoing, clearly-stated policy to drive Israel into the sea. The Palestinian Constitution will be rife with loopholes and caveats as described in the above article to ensure that the average, lazy, filthy Palestinian continues to despise Israel and continues to what to drive the Israelis into the sea.

    Stay strong Israel! If they want “their territory” they, the Palestinians, should get it from the Arab countries that absorbed it in the first place. No Israeli land. Then the U.S. should end ALL aid to the “new” state. They want to be a country…. Okay, but don’t make me pay for it.

      Take the land from Jordan or Syria or both since the Palestinian state was originally proposed before WWI and has been rejected by the Arab world. Palestinians have been treated better inside Israel because God requires that they treat people with respect unless they have hatred toward the children of Abraham.
