‘A Part of America That Is Hidden in Plain Sight’: Former CNN Anchor Decries Racism After Getting Pulled Over

American society has come a long way since Rodney King.

Former CNN anchor TJ Holmes apparently had an experience with something that civil rights activists refer to derisively as “driving while black.” That is, the supposed phenomenon of black people getting pulled over by the police in spite of having done nothing wrong. Holmes tweeted about the experience earlier this afternoon, with several different tweets excoriating the police officer who stopped him, apparently without sufficient reason for doing so (the reason given was that the officer wanted to make sure Holmes had insurance on his car). Two of the more notable tweets below:

Mediaite explains:

Holmes and guest host Michael Eric Dyson connected the traffic stop to what they perceive as a lack of improvement on the race relations front since President Barack Obama took office.

“Racial discrimination is a part of America that is hidden in plain site,” Dyson began. “It’s felt by millions of Americans and it was felt by a public individual and documented in a public setting.”[...]

Holmes then claimed that the officer said he stopped the former CNN host because “I want to make sure you have insurance on the car.” He went on to say that he tweeted his experience because “I was frustrated at the time. I have wondered if maybe I made a mistake, if I did something wrong by enflaming people’s emotions, by using the phrase ‘driving while black,’” he said of the media firestorm that resulted from his racially-tinged tweets.

“Immediately, there were two sides clearly polarized on the issue: one side mothers, fathers, young black men who have gone through this experience; and another side that called me a racist. The ‘n-word’ has been thrown around today.”

Mountain out of a molehill or genuine racism? One assumes the Left isn’t going to let this incident go for a while, so presumably, we will find out.

    I challenge any of you while out on the open road and especially those who commute on freeways. Pull in behind several vehicles and while maintaining a safe distance, focus your eyes as clearly as you can and see if you can tell the race of the driver and any occupants in that vehicle. All modern cars have seats with built in headrests as well as many have factory tinted glass. Not the super tinted after market stuff, but just the factory tinted glass. Other that those who have decorated their vehicles in certain ways, you cannot really tell the race for the most part. The last police dept that I was on, we had to give a code that was either alphabetical or numerical regarding the race as either Caucasion, African-American, or Hispanic. Our dept was following a state requirement to keep up any potential racial profiling that may have been conducted. We most often found ourselves telling dispatch to stand by for that particular code, which was most often radioed in during approach of the vehicle and making first observation as the driver’s window was being rolled down.
    On rare occasions, one can tell the race since there are a lot of older cars and pickups on the roads still today. But, for the most part you really can’t tell.

      I spent several years during my police career attached to the traffic division where my primary duty was writing tickets, arresting drinking drivers and working serious or fatal accidents. Never once did I pull over anyone because of their color. This man is an idiot and a racists. Can’t accept responsibility for whatever he did, but blamed the police. How many times have we heard this?????

      Perhaps widdle TJ should be more worried about writing sentences like “aint no joke” than trying to create a race incident where there isn’t one?
      Better yet…widdle TJ should take a trip to Chicago sometime soon so he can see racism in full display with the “flash mob violence” taking place there. Oh wait…they’re blacks committing those attacks..that doesn’t count as racism.

      These black talking heads on t.v. would be literally annihilated in any race war they are trying to start, so it would behoove them to stop agitating.

      But as dumb as they are I’d be willing to bet they think they could win out over superior numbers and a vastly armed opposition, because Obama would order the military to ally with them.

      But they would not. The military and police would break along lines of race aswell.

      Good point, I have often wondered how cops are supposed to see someones skin color on a modern highway in a modern car. it seems like the cop would have to be focusing on the people, in other ward he was just sitting there waiting for a black guy to drive by.

      I have a thought of why the cop was stumbling over his words, it might have to do with the fact that holder is a public figure who trained in the art of debate. I am sure he could make any inexperienced cop nervous.

      What about guessing, when you see the driver bent over 1/2 way into the front passengers seat, the rap music so loud it can be heard 3 blocks away, and those spinning rims on the 20 inch low riders. Then once the driver steps out his drawers are down around his nuts? Man you know you got a minotity then ha ha just chjillin. Yea we had to call in the ethnic make up of the driver also, but whose gonna know what you report and what happen is the truth? I always did my calls 50/50 so I was in compliance. 1/2 whities & 1/2 darkies.

      Dr. Thomas Sowell related a story about how he was pulled over by an officer because his automatic headlights did not switch on as they were supposed to do. Once the officer explained that Dr. Sowell was driving without headlights, Dr. Sowell switched them on. All was well. However, the passenger in the car was convinced that the reason that they had been pulled over was because Dr. Sowell was “driving while black”. Pretty hard to tell the race of the driver at night, but apparently this officer had amazing eyesight.

      About a 1/2 mile from where I live a black nightclub opened up. The police were out every day it was opened pulling over cars with blacks. After about a year it got burned out.

      It was across the street from a grocery store and I went by there all the time. I never saw a police car there before the nightclub opened and I haven’t seen a police car there since.

      Law Enforcement does not pull individuals over to check for insurance. In order for this to be a valid pull-over, the officer must have a reason such as erratic behavior, seat belt non-compliance, texting while driving, speeding, etc. This sounds as though the whole story is still waiting to become public record.

      Sometimes it’s easier than you think. For instance, I recall seeing one car that everyone was giving an extra wide clearance. Then I saw the bumper sticker: “Angry Black Woman”. Even the highway patrol backed off from THAT car.

      I was pulled one time because I looked like another white guy and get this “I had to show ID”!
      Man was I violated!! I had to pull my wallet out.
      There was another time I was pulled for driving“ 45 in a 55”. The policleman asked me if “I had
      been drinking” said I had a glass of milk an hour ago! He laughed and said “it’s unsual for
      someone to drive that slow at that time of night!!
      Must have been because I was White or Black…whatever.

      I’d want to know the following first before judging:

      1) Was he driving a luxury car?
      2) Was he in a suit or street clothes?
      3) Are you going to say “Good job, officers!”, when your luxury car gets stolen by a couple homies (which common sense says, are unlikely to be able to afford it) and they drive right by the police without even getting a glance from them?

      Maji – The fourth amendment to the Constitution is not just an inconvenience for the poor civil servant that has the power of arrest. It is there for all our safety from that civil servant. I have been pulled over for no reason so it doesn’t just happen to black people, it happens to white people too… Police have to have a REASON to pull you over. YOU have to have done something. Read the 4th amendment and then go on youtube and search police abuse. You have rights that the Constitution guarantees, know what they are…

      Is anybody here familiar with Critical Theory?

      It is a method used by Cultural Marxists and Alinskyites to denounce and decry everything about white America in order to render complaints against them ineffective by replacing points of rebuttal with charges that are designed to intimidate, like “racist or hater.”

      For example, do you complain about the massive, out-of-control black on white flash mob attacks and other crimes they commit in numbers far greater percentage wise than any other group?

      Well, then you’re a racist or a hater. They don’t offer information in opposition to your claim they resort to critical thoery methods and simply intimidate you so the discussion will stop right there.

      And it works beautifully against the ignorant and clueless.

      Just look at those on here who think being even legitimately slightly critical of black criminality is racist.

      He should be White and have to go to Atlanta. I got pulled over the first time by a black policeman when I got off the interstate to get directions to my aunts. Five blocks away, got pulled over again. Thank goodness I didn’t have any drugs because the black policeman call in a drug dog. About 6 miles from there when I was almost to my aunts house I got pulled over again and I told the black policeman that I had been checked for insurence and license and sniffed by another drug policedog for drugs and I was sorry I had Oklahoma tags but couldn’t help it. He went thru the whole smear again. This was about 7 years ago and I guess they didn’t have a good computer system. When I left I got pulled over one more time on the interstate because a cop thought I was speeding.

      I see white people pulled over every day. I don’t think most cops care about the skin color of the driver. I admit though, I have seen young and poor people unfairly targeted. I was walking to church – about a 4 mile walk, so I had to get up really early, I was about 18 at the time – and a cop stopped me and ask why I was up so early. What was I up to? “I’m just walking to church,” I said.
      “Come on! You expect me to believe that?”
      Just because I don‘t have any nice clothes doesn’t make me a criminal. I do construction, hard manual labor -someone has to do it- and my work wears and tears up all my clothes. “Seriously! You can follow me to church if you want.”
      “Just stay out of trouble. I’ll radio other officers to keep an eye on you.”
      “Go ahead. I’m not lying.”
      I was stopped countless times for no apparent reason -other than being poor- in my teens and twenties and I’m not even black.

      I don‘t know about Holmes’s exchange but I have and many other my family(who are multi racial) have experienced some of the supposed “driving while black” problem.

      I also have just been pulled over for no reason/without cause but it had nothing to with race. It does happen. I live in Georgia and I’ve had many encounters with police who were blatantly racist.

      I was even told by a cop to hurry up and leave a Varsities restaurant or I would be in some kind of trouble for no reason other than walking through the front door.

      Not regard to anything I said above. I do think that race relations on both sides have gotten much worse sense Obama was elected.

      A black friend of mine who happens to be a deputy sheriff and a part time US Marshall drives a Mercedes. He gets pulled over all the time without having done anything wrong.

      If you think blacks don’t get pulled over just for being black, then you don’t know any blacks. And you don’t know any cops, because if you know them well enough, they will tell you people get pulled over specifically for their race.

      I have to agree with @pro here. I hate the race card being played but there are instances of true racism. We can’t ignore the real ones just because a lot of people cry wolf. You have to have a reason to pull someone over and to make sure they have insurance is not one of those reasons. Anyone with an expensive car will surely report it stolen so all this cop had to do was radio in to see if it was stolen. I am sure he did do this and found it was not reported stolen. So he made up his reason of checking on insurance. It is certainly possible he was pulled over for being a black man in a luxury vehicle. And sorry folks but that is wrong. My husband was in a work van and pulled over with a coworker. The cop did not believe that they worked for the company at first. Then he said to coworker I bet your boy over there wasn’t wearing his seat belt. My husband always wears his seat belt, but just because he is black he was assumed to be stealing and not wearing his seat belt. Racism does happen people. Not like it used to. For the 20 years we have been married things have changed. We don’t get looked at the same as we used to but there is still racism out there. Let’s just be honest about when it does and does not happen.

      Cops will pull over anyone that looks suspicious regardless of the race. Unfortunately, more often than not, it’ll be a minority – like me. But to say this is not something white people don’t deal with is disingenuous. There are plenty of shady looking white folks out there and I’m sure that every once in a while, they get profiled. The difference is, they don’t cry about it as often as we minorities do. It’s easy to say this shouldn’t happen but I personally don’t see how a cop can be effective without profiling people.

      That’s what I thought. Here’s my opinion in black and white. I don’t want a police officer to pull me over to check for squat. I only want to be stop because I have violated the law. Don’t bother me I am busy with what is important in my life. Don’t walk up to me and ask me any questions. Leave me alone unless you see me braking the law. Don‘t check on me I’m a grown up. If I need you I will summons you to me. And as a servant of the public I better not get any attitude. You work for me not the other way around. Other then that go find law breakers and do your damn job.

      I have to agree with @pro here. I hate the race card being played but there are instances of true racism. We can’t ignore the real ones just because a lot of people cry wolf. You have to have a reason to pull someone over and to make sure they have insurance is not one of those reasons. Anyone with an expensive car will surely report it stolen so all this cop had to do was radio in to see if it was stolen. I am sure he did do this and found it was not reported stolen. So he made up his reason of checking on insurance. It is certainly possible he was pulled over for being a black man in a luxury vehicle. And sorry folks but that is wrong. My husband was in a work van and pulled over with a coworker. The cop did not believe that they worked for the company at first. Then he said to coworker I bet your boy over there wasn’t wearing his seat belt. My husband always wears his seat belt, but just because he is black he was assumed to be stealing and not wearing his seat belt. Racism does happen people. Not like it used to. For the 20 years we have been married things have changed. We don’t get looked at the same as we used to but there is still racism out there. Let’s just be honest about when it does and does not happen.

    Even the most back water towns have dash cams with audio anymore so this should be an easy one to prove to be truth or fiction. If it’s true then that Officer should be fired (not retrained) for obvious racism and if proved to be fiction then TJ HOLMES should be scorned and ridiculed by the media and labeled a racist himself. So, no matter what a need to get to the truth is necessary.

    I got pulled over a few years back. I immediately checked my reflection in the rear view mirror and, to my surprise, I was white. Nicely tanned, of course, but white white white.

    I thought only “people of color” got pulled over. After I put the ticket in the glove box I thought to myself, “Darn, I missed my martyrdom moment.”

      I got pulled over while driving white and FEMALE on I-75 in Georgia … I knew I wasn’t speeding (a fact that was verified also by the two cars that were following me with my son driving one and his friend the other.. as they moved down to Florida) .. I could tell when he (the large black cop) looked in the vehicle he was surprised that I wasn’t younger (I like to have a young hairstyle .. what can I say) he was also taken by surprise by the little dog in the back carrier ready to take him on … the active radar detector and my book with the speed traps marked. Let’s just say that he gave me a “warning” and let me go ;-) .. IF HE HAD GIVEN ME A TICKET WE WOULD HAVE BEEN STAYING IN GEORGIA WHILE I FOUGHT IT AND CHARGED HIM WIHT DISCRIINATION! Hey what fair .. right Obama ;-)

      I’m White. I live in Phoenix. I get pulled over and asked these same questions. Does anyone know who I can blame because I want to blame somebody too. I hadn’t thought that I could blame somebody, or something else for everything that happens to me. Wouldn’t that be nice not to have to take any responsibility, or credit for anything that happens to me. I want to join that game. Life would be so much less complicated if everything was somebody elses fault

    NYS Trooper pulls over a driver and when he walked up to the window the driver said, You only pulled me over because I‘m black and as the driver looked up at my black friend that’s a Trooper said, nope, I pulled you over because you were speeding. Beautiful!

    Oh give me a break. I’m White, and I get pulled over for no reason at all, on a regular basis. I’ve never been given a ticket. It’s as if some cops just look for easy people to pick on and push around, just to show their authority. Black cops have treated me the worst, and are usually the bigger jerks. Racism works both ways Mr. Holmes.

      I’m not fond of time wasting “poke about” police morons. But in a few days this fellow is going to think about it and realize it wasn’t because he was black, it was because these people are still out there enforcing laws. And he’s going to realize Holder was right, you really don’t want that. Because if, and hypothetically this never happens, but if Holmes had beat the officer into the ground , Holmes might have been fatally shot to death thereby requiring one of those unique “color appreciative” special prosecutors to address things like the officer’s internet fund, and the secret handshakes that he has with his wife, and the real meaning of gated communities.

    I am not black but I have very dark skin (darker than T J Holmes definitely) especially in the summer when I get tan naturally. I have been pooled over several time since I came to USA 21 years ago and each times it was not because of darkness of my skin but because I speed 50 miles in the 30 miles zone. So, drive more careful and stop whining about racism.

    Hey, when I was stationed in Hawaii, coming out of the front gate, doing the speed limit, I got pulled over, HPD walked up and I asked What was I doing? All the cop said was License and registration/insurance card. Went back to his car, a few minutes later came back and gave me my paper work and said “have a good night, Brah” I asked him 5 times what I did, but that is my experience of getting pulled over in Hawaii for “Driving While Being Haouli (white)”.

    The officer did his backround check using CBS reporter Brian Ross who flagged TJ Holmes as “possibly” being the Aurora shooter Jim Holmes. Brian later regretted the error.

    I call BS on this story,are there A hole cops? sure there are but this story doesn’t pass the smell test.The cop knows he can’t pull you over to check and see if you have insurance,no probable cause.Who is TJ Holmes? I’ve never watched the communist news network so that explains it,but this sounds like Holmes trying to get his 15 mins.
