A Sunday in the Life…of Al Sharpton

Ever wonder what it’s like to be Al Sharpton? Ok, probably not, but The New York Times did. And so today it published a “day in the life” with the censorship-loving Rev. The Times had him explain a typical Sunday, and among the gems are his love of Starbucks mochas, he recites two poems every morning, and he doesn’t want his own church:

REVERENCE I’m always up by 5:30 or 6. My ritual is I start the day with prayer — for my family, for my mother, who’s got dementia, and whatever particular concerns I’ve got that day. I’m always thankful that I’m alive. The wake-up is a victory.

INSPIRATION I recite two poems, always, every day. When I was doing 90 days in jail in 2001, former Mayor Maynard Jackson visited me, and he told me he read Ella Wheeler Wilcox’s “Will” every day — that’s how he became the first black mayor of Atlanta. It’s very inspiring. It talks about how, no matter what, if you have strong will, you can make it. And I recite “Invictus,” which is similar in theme: I’m the captain of my fate, the master of my destiny.

BREAK THE FAST, BARELY My breakfast is two boiled eggs and an orange juice. That’s it. I’m down to 177 pounds, but I’ve been up as high as 311. Two years ago, I was between 238 and 240. But I don’t even have an appetite anymore. I just feel better. Doc says I’m fine.

REVVING UP My building has an exercise room, so I’ll do the treadmill about 30 minutes, maybe a little weights, but not crazy — then come back up, go on the Net, read the daily papers. By 8, I’m showered and ready to head downtown.

Read the rest from the Times here.

The reverend appears to be the head of The Church of Al–which, I suppose, makes it easy to let bitterness rule his heart and his decisions. Especially since all of it makes him a rich man. But not exactly what Christ asks of us when he tells us to pick up our crosses in order to follow Him. Not that I’m perfect but that I strive to acknowledge my humanity before the Grace He extends to me. That involves time on my knees, not time wailing before TV cameras and fleecing the public.

Interesting that the “reverend” doesn’t seem to find a way to fit church attendance into his Sunday.

I’m still amazed that a guy who was so intimately involved in the Tawana Brawley con is taken seriously by anyone.

All I read from Al about his devotions is I, I, I. I do not see a Christian‘s need for God to be included in Al’s big day. I do not see a reverence for God, only for Al. Invictus as devotional? Really? How about a humble prayer for God’s blessing before the two boiled eggs? Or a blessing for those who prepared his food?

I’m impressed that he has memorized poetry. In public schools these days, they don’t want “rote learning” and kids don’t learn how to memorize anything, none of the mnenomic devices. It‘s so bad that many don’t know their own phone numbers and addresses – and I’m talking kids 9 years old and up. Now if only this man could remember what is in the Constitution.

Well, don’t be too impressed………….I had to memorize that poem in school and it doesn’t go exactly like Rev.quoted it!! Here it is:
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
      For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
      Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Strange little poem for any Rev. to quote… Guess I also missed out on the Bible reading :-)

And I recite “Invictus,” which is similar in theme: I’m the captain of my fate, the master of my destiny.

      ****************************

Okay, here’s the full poem, a Victorian work by William Ernest Henley, an Englishman who lost a foot to tuberculous at 25 and died in his 50′s.

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
      For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
      Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

While it was used in the movie about Nelson Mandela, it was also the piece recited by Timothy McVeigh, the Oklahoma City bomber just before his death sentence was carried out.

Interesting choice for a Christian minister to recite each day. It’s so full of acknowledgment of Christ the King, and his sovereignty. I am not often grateful for the Times reporting, but it did clarify for me exactly who is calling the shots in Al’s life.
