A Truly Inspired Choice: Rumored GOP Contenders React to Ryan VP Pick

Sens. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) reacted Saturday to Mitt Romney's selection of Paul Ryan as his running mate. (AP Photos)

Several of the once-rumored contenders to be Mitt Romney’s running mate are reacting to the news that the former Massachusetts governor has selected Wisconsin congressman Paul Ryan.

Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), one of the much-buzzed-about possibilities, said in a statement he and his wife wish Ryan and his family “the very best” and that he is looking forward to helping carry the Romney-Ryan ticket to victory.

“Jane and I wish Paul and Janna and their kids the very best. As the Chairman of the Romney campaign in Ohio, I look forward to working with Paul to ensure that the Romney-Ryan ticket carries Ohio and is victorious in November,” Portman said in a written statement, according to Politico. “Most importantly, as a member of the Senate, I look forward to working closely with a Romney-Ryan Administration to restore fiscal sanity and enact pro-growth policies to create jobs.”

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), another finalist, called the Ryan pick “a truly inspired choice.”

“Throughout his life, Mitt Romney has made great decisions, and choosing Paul Ryan as his running mate is a truly inspired choice,” Rubio said in a statement, according to the Sunshine State News. “I got to know Paul during my Senate campaign when he endorsed me early on when I was still considered a long shot. Paul Ryan is a courageous reformer who understands our nation’s challenges, has proposed bold policy solutions to solve them, and has shown the courage to stand up to President Obama and other Washington politicians trying to tear him down.”

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Ryan’s selection makes the ticket a formidable economic team.

“With Paul Ryan on the ticket this is a team that understands the economic stagnation our country has been facing the last four years and the urgency with which we need to change course. The Romney-Ryan team is uniquely positioned to make the tough choices necessary to confront our fiscal challenges and get results.”

Not reacting yet to the Ryan announcement, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty confirmed to NBC News Friday night he would not be on the GOP ticket but said he was “not disappointed.”

“I didn’t enter this thinking I was going to be the vice presidential candidate, so I’m not disappointed,” Pawlenty said of his time campaigning for Romney since endorsing him after dropping his own bid last year. “And I’m excited about his candidacy, and I’m excited about having him be the next president.”

    I wish that Boehner, most Republican members of the House and Senate also had the the courage to stand up to President Obama and all the other Washington politicians trying to tear them down. And mostly I would like to see the conservatives out there stand up to the liberals, occupiers and all the radical elements that are determined to destroy the country. The Chick Fil A protest was a good start, keep it up wherever a moronic liberal spouts off. At home, at work, at the grocery, at sporting events, wherever!

      SHOCKING!!! PAUL RYAN OWNS STOCK IN COMPANIES THAT SUPPORT GAY RIGHTS

      AMAZON, APPLE, STARBUCKS

      So, on the one hand ryan says he doesn’t support gay rights, but on the other he owns stock in companies that support gay rights, some gay marriage.

      I can see why mittens picked him, speaks out of both sides of his mouth. What are Americans to believe, conservative or not, liar or not, like mittens: flip-flopper, wishy-washy.

      Both roms/ryan want to benefit the rich and that hasn’t worked in a decade. Clinton asked for a small tax hike on the wealthiest Americans and what happened: NEARLY A DECADE OF GREAT JOB GROWTH, HUGE RISE IN DJIA AND Clinton took a big deficit from reagan/bush and gave gw bush a surplus.

      Course gw bush FIRST BUDGET WAS A DEFICIT, THEN MORE, cheney said they didn’t matter, HUGE DEBT GROWTH UNDER gw bush (same policies as roms/ryan)———-SLOW JOB GROWTH, AND FINANCIAL CRISIS WITH ENORMOUS DROP IN STOCK MARKET, worst since the Great Depression.

      Surely America is too smart to go back to cheney/bush under new names of romney/ryan?

      REMEMBER THE DJIA HAS RISEN 63% SINCE OBAMA CAME TO POWER, rising from 8000 to 13300, enormous creation of wealth for those who own stocks, funds, 401k, annuities, pensions.

      IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR CHILDREN and your money, you’ll KEEP OBAMA AND VOTE DEMOCRAT IN NOVEMBER.

      Right there with ya, 2Smart. It’s the People vs. Washington. It’s our time to earn our freedom, and help as many wake up to the urgent, real threats from our own government. They are no longer serving the people’s interests. There’s no more time to waste. No bench time for anyone. We’re all in this together – if the blind drones are willing to let their freedoms dissolve, YOURS and MINE go along with theirs. Preserving freedom is something that will happen for all Americans. Either we all retain our rights and natural liberties, or they are gone for everyone. Together, for better or worse.

      “Clinton asked for a small tax hike on the wealthiest Americans and what happened: NEARLY A DECADE OF GREAT JOB GROWTH, HUGE RISE IN DJIA AND Clinton took a big deficit from reagan/bush and gave gw bush a surplus.”

      False boom, resulting in a Dot Com crash. The higher taxes had nothing to do with the inflated numbers.

      Also, Clinton didn’t leave Bush with a surplus; He raided the Social Security fund to make it seem that way. (Not that we need SS; But if we’re going to liquidate government programs, which is good to do, then also stop collecting money for them.)

      PAUL RYAN VOTED FOR TARP (of course, it was gw bush bill) and ryan also supported auto bailout, why would he do that? Then Obama continued making TARP more successful and completing bailout and kill of bin laden. All the things bush couldn’t do. Why? Just another GOP incompetent, only more so.

      “Rep Ryan’s budgets increase the defense function and cut taxes trillions beyond Bush. Thus, any claims to achieve balance must occur through massive spending cuts on everything else… So, just like under W, you’re left with large tax cuts and budget deficits. Heck, Rep Ryan himself voted for TARP and supported the auto bailout–lots of suppliers in WI–not to mention the various gov’t benefits enjoyed by his district

      @soybomb There is nothing wrong with your link. (And Romney was not my first choice.)
      However, I do take exception to your conclusion that Norfolk is the “military country” you imply.

      Looking at the surrounding Counties and municipalities:
      Norfolk, -Norfolk Naval Base;
      Va Beach, -Naval Air Station and -Ft. Story;
      just north, -Little Creek Amphibian Station;
      to the west Hampton Roads -Ft. Monroe (now closed and moved mostly to Ft. Eustis),
      Hampton -Langley Air Force Base,
      Newport News/James City County (don’t forget Newport News shipbuilding), -Ft. Eustis;
      Yorktown/York County/Williamsburg, Yorktown Naval Weapons Station, Coast Guard Station, Cheatam Annex, etc.

      RP didn’t win these places, only the inner city blight areas of Norfolk and Hampton.

      The Military areas went clearly for Romney. That said, Paul and Romney were the only two on the Republican ballot.

      Let us stand together for a viable Republican ticket, lest Obama capitalize on the Ambition, Avarice and Calamity of anti-Obama rifts, and reign for four more years of destruction.

I would like to point out that Ron Paul got nearly 50% in the Hampton Roads area as a whole, which is better than he did in the overal state. “If you win a just conflict thru force of arms …”

      The Persian Gulf War was not a just conflict.

      See here.

      Another United Nations War? by Rep. Ron Paul
      http://www.lewrockwell.com/paul/paul79.html

      “President Bush Sr. proudly spoke of “The New World Order,” a term used by those who promote one-world government under the United Nations. In going to war in 1991, he sought and received UN authority to push Iraqi forces out of Kuwait. He forcefully stated that this UN authority was adequate, and that although a congressional resolution was acceptable, it was entirely unnecessary and he would proceed regardless. At that time there was no discussion regarding a congressional declaration of war. The first Persian Gulf War therefore was clearly a UN, political war fought within UN guidelines, not for U.S. security — and it was not fought through to victory. The bombings, sanctions, and harassment of the Iraqi people have never stopped. We are now about to resume the active fighting. Although this is referred to as the second Persian Gulf War, it’s merely a continuation of a war started long ago, and is likely to continue for a long time even after Saddam Hussein is removed from power.”

      *****
      “… only to throw it away by ignoring any & all violations of subsequent agreements, you will cease to have a meaningful foreign policy or allies.

He’s young – only 42 – and it’s about time that we begin to turn the reins of government over to his generation. He knows the budget inside out. He knows where the waste and inefficiency is, and is not afraid to speak out about it and offer ways to change the status quo. He’s a pragmatist as opposed to an ideologue, and always ready, willing and able to talk to the other party to seek out common ground. Lately, the Democrat definition of being bi-partisan is to do it their way or you’re an obstructionist. Watch for more of the game playing that they did during the Bush years, and which the Republicans have been doing as well these past three years. It’s always been about winning elections for both parties as opposed to doing the right thing.

    Paul Ryan and Marco Rubio were my choices for the Presidency. I didn’t get either at the top of the ticket, but I’ll settle for having Congressman Ryan become Vice President Ryan as a start to getting our country back on track. Just add in a few more Tea Party members in both chambers of Congress and I’ll be a happy camper.

      Just like how the 2011 Federal Budget Compromise only cut projected spending, resulting in an increase in spending, the Paul Ryan budget proposal results in an increase in spending, as well.

      The Republicans never learn their lesson.

It’s really easy: Are people going to vote for WORDS or DEEDS? All anyone running against Obama should have it easy because of his absolutely rotten performance… all the thug-Chicago-lies aside, just ask people: ARE YOU VOTING FOR WORDS or DEEDS? The people on the left are just useful tools like people on the left. You don’t understand the movement of the oceans. For instance: when earthquakes hit in the Mid-East what do you think they are thinking? They are thinking they aren’t doing enough to smack down Israel and the U.S, and Allah is shaking them up. That’s what they are thinking.

    A very bold and great choice for Mitt Romney. The TEA Party should be pleased with Romney’s conservative pick. The Tea Party should now be able to unify and support the Romney Ticket.
    For the last 3-1/2 years the Obama Regime has brought us more debt, doubt and despair. Its time for real solutions and real leadership.

      Actually, not taking Rubio is a good choice (and I’m from Florida), because we don’t need to lose any conservative seats in the Senate. Taking Ryan sends signals to the country that Romney is serious about getting the economy going again, and getting the US fiscal house in order. Maybe now we’ll get a budget…..one can HOPE for a CHANGE for the better than what we have now!

      rich paying their share, and see the pubs for what they are: INCOMPETENTS, take shrub, please.

      reagan/bush: 3 recessions, stock mkt crash, savings loan scandal, iran contra scandal, ron’s senior aides going to jail, and worst——–all the dead marines in Lebanon, then reagan tucks tail and runs

      gw bush: iraq, and all the American dead and wounded there, deficits and huge increase in debt, financial crisis, didn’t speak english well, drunk driver—and you want more pubs?

      Various statistical measures of Mr. Ryan peg him as being quite conservative. Based on his Congressional voting record, for instance, the statistical system DW-Nominate evaluates him as being roughly as conservative as Representative Michele Bachmann, the controversial congresswoman of Minnesota.

      By this measure, in fact, which rates members of the House and Senate throughout different time periods on a common ideology scale, Mr. Ryan is the most conservative Republican member of Congress to be picked for the vice presidential slot since at least 1900.

    I love Rand Paul, and agree big cuts need to be made. However, making ginormous cuts immediately will send us into a downward out-of-control tailspin. Ryan is a financial genius … he’ll do well for the country.
