RAMALLAH, West Bank (The Blaze/AP) — Thousands of Palestinians cheering and waving flags gave President Mahmoud Abbas a hero’s welcome in the West Bank Sunday, as he told them triumphantly a “Palestinian Spring” had been born following his historic speech to the U.N. last week.

Abbas’ popularity has skyrocketed since he asked the U.N. on Friday to recognize Palestinian independence, defying appeals from Israel and the United States to return to peace talks. His request has pushed the region into uncharted waters, and left the international community scrambling over how to respond.

Thousands of people crowded Abbas’ West Bank headquarters in the city of Ramallah to get a glimpse of the 76-year-old president upon his return from New York. Abbas was uncharacteristically animated, shaking his hands and waving to the audience.

Abbas compared his campaign to the Arab Spring, the mass demonstrations sweeping the Arab world in hopes of freedom, saying that an independent Palestinian state is inevitable.

“We have told the world that there is the Arab Spring, but the Palestinian Spring is here,” he said. “A popular spring, a populist spring, a spring of peaceful struggle that will reach its goal.”

He warned that the Palestinians face a “long path” ahead. “There are those who would put out obstacles … but with your presence they will fall and we will reach our end.”

According to the Jerusalem Post, the Israeli Defense Force has been gearing up for an escalation in violent demonstrations in the wake of Abbas’s speech.

“We see calls for escalation on the Palestinian street and expect more stone throwing over the coming days,” a senior IDF officer said.

The Palestinians want an independent state in the West Bank, east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, territories Israel gained in the 1967 Mideast war.

Israel says it’s ready for peace talks, but has rejected Palestinian calls to freeze construction of Jewish settlements in lands claimed by the Palestinians. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also rejected Palestinian demands that the borders between Israel and a future Palestine be based on the 1967 pre-war lines.

Abbas last week asked the U.N. Security Council to grant the Palestinians full U.N. membership. The Security Council is expected to study the request for several weeks before making a decision, though the U.S. – Israel’s closest ally – has promised to veto the request if it proceeds.

As an alternative, the Palestinians say they will seek lesser observer status in the General Assembly – short of full statehood but a position that would allow them to join international bodies where they could push their agenda against Israel.

The international Quartet of Mideast mediators – the U.S., EU, Russia and U.N. – last week issued a statement calling for a resumption of peace talks without preconditions and a target for a final agreement by the end of 2012.

Abbas has signaled he will reject the Quartet’s plan, while Israel has hinted it accepts it.

    Wall Street Journal op-ed interpreted Abbas’s article with this quote, “In other words, what Palestinians seek out of a U.N. vote isn’t an affirmation of their right to a state, but rather another tool in their perpetual campaign to harass, delegitimize, and ultimately destroy Israel.”

    Their will never be peace with the Jews because of what the Qur’an teaches. Rewrite %80 of the Qur’an and its accompanying collection of Hadiths and maybe, just maybe will there be peace in the middle east and elsewhere in the world!!

      Kinda ironic, that the filthy Palestinians are worshipping the person that is quickly leading them to their doom. The Israelis are just about done taking crap from the animals that have terrorized and murdered them, and will shortly be expressing their displeasure……As for this Arab Spring, I’ve heard it is a magical time when freedom loving patriots clean their rifles, in preparation for the opening of Muslim hunting season…..good hunting, children of Israel!!!

    As a Christian, I am bound by the New Testament, but, I look to the Old Testament for guidance.
    Am I wrong that Jews live by the Old Testament?
    I don’t think this CAN end up well…

    If the “palestenians” laid down their guns today, there’d be no more war.

      Pigpin – the attack was a mistake due to Israeli confusion about the identity of the USS Liberty. Israel paid over 6 million to the survivor and to the families of the men killed.

In addition to a Jew Free state, he will not recognize Israel as a Jewish State! He will also not allow all of the Palestinians into his new Judenrein State, instead to make them flood Israel! They were both MURDERED by Lehi for not being “pro-Israel” enough. But other than ASSASSINATING a couple of honkies, it is hard to call the group such a strong word as “terrorists”, right? Oops, wait, Lehi also massacred an entire town of Arabs (Google the Deir Yassin Massacre) which Lehi felt shouldn’t be in “their” country. So targeted political assassinations and massacring whole groups of people over territory, sounds like Shamir = Abbas, and YOU DARE to condemn the Palestinians and SUPPORT the Israelis?       Pigpen, the actions of some do not condem an entire people. No matter how you slice it, the jews are the covenant people of God. No if’s, and’s , or but’s. You speak of past actions, but I wonder what that man would say today if he was interviewed about why those actions were taken-not just what someone thinks, but what he would say.       But we must be honest about what is what and who is who.

      If you wish to believe in fairies, gods or end-of-days, by all means, do so.

      But once you choose to believe in such yarns and wrap your “soul” (there is no better metaphor) up in these beliefs, please be aware of the compromised position you’ve put yourself in.

      Not just you. But the others like you who have done the same but from a different point of view.

      Your entire thought structure is now dependent upon the intercession of a ficticious being (same for the muslims, not so much the same for the jews)

      Yes..I believe you are right. God told Saul to take them all out a long time ago because they kept slipping up on Israili camps and murdering them. I think now it may be coming close to the “end of the world as we know it.” It’s countiing down. I think God is gathering the nations as stated in Revelations. My pastor says that praying for the peace of Israel means that we should be praying that they recognise who He is. I have been studying the different sects of Jews and even though they didn’t recognise Him, their theology is very sweet and kind..thinking that no one will wind up in hell and that everyone will be free to worship God on earth. I can see now why they have so much patience and love.How can anyone not love these people of faith? I am not speaking of the atheist ones. I am speaking only of the ones who are faithful and who are close to God. I believe as the Bible says that their eyes shall be opened after the full number of gentiles have come in.

      yes and when you look at the whole population of JEWS…In the world…144,000.in REV 7:1 …That isnt that many…
      But that dose explain the atheist exposion…And the lack of concern from well know Jews here in the U.S. and Abroad….staying silent…

    This is only going to lead to war. It is obvious the Palestinians dont want peace therefore they should not be recognized by the UN or any country for that matter. Direct talks with Isreal are the only solution.

      They will soon ….be sharing the temple mount…. both Temple next to the Mosque
      plans are all drawn up for the Temple….The picture shows “temple and mosque” side by side… Israel already has most of the pieces made to be used in the Temple Per Gods instuction from the Torah…The one piece..“Ark of the Covvenant” some say…Is burried
      under the “Dome of the Rock”..?..If thats true ….The Temple would be incomplete without it …
      Maybe thats what sparks….The war of a all wars…?
