ABC Cancels ‘Anti-Christian‘ ’Good Christian Belles’ Television Show

ABC Cancels GCB Following Anti Christian Claims & Poor Ratings | Good Christian Belles

It was a television show that came with a fair amount of controversy. Even before it aired, faith groups were decrying its name and its purported anti-Christian message. And now, just months after the show premiered, ABC’s “Good Christian Belles” (originally entitled “Good Christian Bitches,” based on Kim Gatlin’s book by the same name) has been cancelled.

Now, if you’re not familiar with the show, its plot will give you a decent idea surrounding its contents:

Twenty years ago, Amanda Vaughn was the queen bee of Hillside Park, Texas, but now she’s got to pay for her sins.

An original mean girl, Amanda (Leslie Bibb) used to terrorize the less attractive and less popular. After her husband gets busted for a Ponzi scheme and then dies in sensationalized circumstances, Amanda has to return to Dallas in disgrace and start her life again. Will the good Christian belles of her hometown welcome her with open arms … or stab her in the back? No one in Hillside Park is a saint, but that doesn‘t mean they can’t have a heart. As Amanda and her teenage kids try to adjust to their new circumstances, the ladies of Highland Park alternate between sympathy and scheming.

Here‘s the show’s trailer:

Back in March, Newt Gingrich slammed the show, which went by the acronym GCB, claiming that it showcased anti-Christian bias. Of course, the former Republican presidential candidate wasn’t alone. New York City Councilman and Catholic church member Peter Vallone joined in the chorus claiming that the show was slamming the Christian faith and conservative groups, too, spoke out.

The American Family Association, for one, filed a petition against GCB, according to The Christian Post.

“With a title like Good Christian Bitches, you can imagine what kind of show it will be,” the AFA said. “Even if they change the title, the content will still mock people of faith.”

One Million Moms called the show “blasphemy at its worst!”

But one of GCB’s stars, Kristin Chenoweth, has, in the past, defended the show as well as her part in it. Chenoweth, a practicing Christian, saw no problem with the program’s handling of faith.

“The Bible tells us that we’re not supposed to judge, and people shouldn’t judge before seeing the show,” she told ABC News back in March. “I’m a Christian, I think that’s pretty well known, and I would never do anything that I think crossed the line.”

TV.com reported over the weekend that the “over-the-top soap…never took off,” and the L.A. Times provided more information on the cancellation and some of the stars’ reaction prior to the initial news breaking:

It seemed destined to take over the void that was to be left when “Desperate Housewives” ended its run. But the coyly titled soap was a middle-of-the road performer, averaging less than 6 million viewers and a 1.93 in the 18-49 demo in its Sunday slot — and must now pack its bags. Though the network hasn’t officially said it has axed the series, tweets from its stars suggest it has.

“To all u #GCB fans & Amanda lovers, thx 4 the <3,” said Leslie Bibb, who plays Amanda. “Appreciate it & just wait, we’ll get 2 go on a new fun ride somewhere else! #lifeisperfect”

Costar Kristin Chenoweth apparently got wind of the cancellation pre-concert: “Onstage. Sound check. Bad timing abc. San Fran will get a great show tho!”

The network has since officially issued its ruling that the show will not be returning next fall.

Can you imagine the outrage if the preacher in the show got caught having gay sex with a meth dealer and then lying about it? Christians all over the country would take to the streets playing victim until they realized – oops – Ted Haggard already did that in real life.
Why do people not take to the streets over real life examples but would flip out at the first example from a stupid tv show? My guess: it doesn’t fit their self-victimizing agenda. It‘s hollywood that’s attacking us. It’s the gays who are attacking us. It’s the atheists! No – it’s just a mirror.

Its true you can find folks who make bad mistakes in every walk of life. But to pretend as if there is not a majority of Christians out there who do their best to follow the bible is either naive or just your way of slandering others for some unknown reason. If you disagree with the Christian life style of the bible or the fact that Christians are not perfect then, more power to your perfect lifestyle! That is what America is all about, different opinions, different lifestyles. But you don’t have to be nasty about it.

Don’t forget poking fun at all of the prayer groups that meet at Hooters (or in GCB’s case, “Boobylicious”). It’s all the same. I think the show was funny. Amazing to me that so many had an opinion about something that they never watched. Most of what I see in churches today is just over the top consummerism. Everybody can‘t wait to go to church and show off their style as they come in and drop their kids off at children’s church and rush to the Starbuck’s line before the preacher gets started. After church, they drive like a pack of hell hounds trying to beat the crowd at whatever restaurant (maybe Hooters again???) they have all agreed on.

mamalone – many Christians did raise a big stink about that Ted Haggard scandal. Christians who really care about their relationship with God don’t just gloss over scandal in the church heirarchy. There’s just not much we can do about it. People sin. Screaming about it doesn’t change what the person did and the harm it did to others. So we try to use it to learn how NOT to act.

so what your saying is church is full of hypocrites? You should join, one more won’t matter.

True Christians are NOT perfect. they accept their imperfection and strive to live their life in a Christlike manner acceptting the mercy of Christ’s gift to each of us. They are not “fixed” or “holy”. Christians are flawed, but saved by grace.

Denial of God is a tool used by those that are unwilling to face their own sinful nature and the lack of their ability to deal with that nature eternally without Jesus Christ.

I honestly will pray for you to find peace and find Christ.

I’m pointing out that there is often a disconnect between what people believe and how they act. This is true of all people, regardless of religion. This show is speaking to this aspect of human nature with respect to christians – probably because it’s something the majority of people in America can relate to (seeing as how 80% of people identify as christian).

Why I am a hypocrite is unclear, you failed to mention what I said that was hypocritical.

It always amazes me how people judge Christians based on the most extreme case they can occasionally find or create in their minds. If the network wants to run this show it’s their choice. They will lose a large section of viewers because of the content, but no one is forcing them to drop the show. Everyone wants to watch a show that portrays Christians as hypocrits and liars, and there are plenty of those, but most of us do our best to follow Christ’s examples even though we sometimes fail. Honestly, there is absolutely nothing on ABC that I would waste an hour of my life watching anyway, so this show while offensive to me, really does not bother me. There are far more offensive shows on cable than this drivel.

As for all of you posters on here who relish the idea of a Christian falling from grace, enjoy your occasional laugh. You can continue to judge us all by the actions of a small percentage, that is your free will given to you by God. I will continue to pray for you, and when I commit the inevitable occasional sin I will ask forgiveness from God and guess what, He will give it. Because He is my savior whom I proclaim openly and lovingly, and He is the ultimate love so He will also forgive you if you are able to put away your pride admit your sins and accept His love and sacrifice for you. You will never find more true joy than His love.

If you don’t do that then sadly you will burn in Hell. Nuff said. God loves you all regardless of what you love.

Being Christian doesn’t make you perfect, and doesn‘t mean that you won’t make mistakes. The one thing it does mean is that we are forgiven by our Heavenly Father of them. A fact that some of you won’t be. Really need to change your way of thinking, but if you don‘t you won’t have anyone but yourself to blame. You have been told.

The fact it got cancels doesn’t make up foir the meaning behind the act. People can be guilty of attempted murder even when they are unknowingly hiring an undercover cop to commit the act. So in your world they get a walk because the hitman was an actor? GCB shows intent on harming Christanity through fake story lines and fake people. ABC IS THE ANYONE BUT CHRISTIAN NETWORK THEY SHOWED WHAT THEY ARE.

The guy who brought down Ted Haggard, Mike Jones, had been working on riding the publicity train from the Larry Craig scandal since 2007 when a lone cop went into a very busy Minneapolis/St Paul international airport and claimed that out of thousands of people milling in and out of the main men’s restroom each and every day that ONLY ONE of those many, many men wanted gay sex, and that just happened to be anti-gay senator Larry Craig.
I think Mike Jones just thought, “Oh, this is too perfect!” and so he tried to jump aboard that gravy train, but nobody believed his claim, that he was about the 6th out of 9 or so gay no-names, that Larry Craig had asked to jump his bones too. So Mike Jones had to set his sights on Ted Haggard -who is just an idiot and therefore an easy target- in order to make a living from book sales over the scandal and 1-man theater re-enactments. If Ted hadn‘t been so dirt stupid it wouldn’t have worked, but Mike Jones would certainly find some preacher who would still have fallen for it elsewhere.
Church preachers -especially those who preach against homosexuality- I hope you’re reading this. YOU WILL BE A GAY TARGET, so be ready and for God’s sakes, just say no, even if the boy-toy offers to do those nasty things your wife would never do. You will be tested, God is watching you, and so is everyone else.
I also recommend you don’t cheat on your wife with another woman either, no matter how hot and sexy the plant they send after you is.

Can you imagine if they made a show mocking atheists, portraying them as more annoying preachers than Jehovah’s witnesses, worse fanatics than muslims, and as a final punchline showing that they really do roast in a hell when they die? Hollywood alone would collectively drop a brick over that show being aired, and every single special interest thug group in North America would line up to protest it and chain themselves to doorways.

I beg to differ. There is no difference in playing on the stereotype that “all Christians are hypocrites” than there would be if the show portrayed a group of blacks as lazy, uneducated, drug-taking illiterate thugs who spent their time lusting after white women. The intent IS to demean all Christians when the premise of the show is that anyone professing Christianity talks the talk, but fails to walk the walk. Of course religious people (Christians and Jews) fail to meet the standards set by their respective religions, but that doesn’t make either the religion, the standards or the people who strive to be decent and fail at some challenges “wrong.”

I agree with Tommyguns and Kristin Chenoweth. The show had a sound Christian theme of Amanda’s personal development. Everyone else served as an example of how far Amanda had come. And if you had actually watched the show you would have seen how Amanda’s good influence was rubbing off on others (yet another good Christian theme).

If you haven‘t seen all the other characters in your own church then you haven’t been paying attention.

I think the biggest problem with the show was it was hitting too close to home for many people. They looked in the mirror and didn’t like what they saw so they want to make the mirror go away. I am a Christian and over the years have attended churches with all these characters. I finally woke up one day and realized I was not a Baptist, Methodist, Catholic or whatever man made denomination you wanted to pick. I am a CHRISTIAN! I try daily to live by the teachings of Jesus Christ but I walked away from manmade organized religions. The politicing and backbiting that goes on in many churches has absolutely nothing to do with being a Christian and I shudder to think these people may be the only example of a Christian they see and turn their back in Christ entirely. I am a long way from being a saint and struggle daily to live my life in a Christ like mannor but no comedy TV show that pokes fun at extreme examples of some of us is going to ruffle my feathers. Sometimes you need to get your cage rattled a little and laugh at yourself. It keeps my feet on the ground and headed the right direction..

It would be wrong to assume the majority of liberals pick up a book and research or actually think through a problem or a challenge. They do not. They decide how life works based on Glee, The view, Modern faimly, Cougar Town, David (missing intelligence) letterman and project runway. So yes, it matters. I’m a “practicing” Christian too and I say that this show definitely crossed the line and yes, I can make that “judgement” by what they say and do and no, the Bible doesn’t say “you shouldn’t judge” period. No – speaking of Christians, Jesus said we shouldn’t “judge” unless we have our own lives (the “beam” in our eye) right with God before we “rebuke” another in love and respect (in hopes to bring them to their senses & repent, etc.) Plus you can indeed make “judgements” whether a person is commiting a sin or not by their actions – it’s even necessary in order to help them.
If they’re not commiting any “outward” sins or have orally repented, asked for forgiveness – no, indeed – you can’t judge their heart. Many verses about church discipline – that no one seems to do anymore, sadly. So….even though I don’t know her “heart”, as a fellow “Christian”, going from her words and actions, I make the judgement that she has some “problems” she needs to straighten out. Sounds like she might be bitter & had bad experiences with other women at “church” (which we all do) that really hurt her and this is a way of “revenge”. plus can be on a TV series !!!
I too am very upset with hypocritical people in the church, but I wouldn’t do something like this, which harms the “cause”. There are many who aren’t & doing great good. So I’m very happy it was cancelled. I’ll pray for her !!!!

      I agree MOMPRAYIN,

Scripture clearly states that believers ARE to judge what is done inside the faith: “What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.” (from 1 Corinthians 5)

In other words, those who follow after Christ have a duty to speak out on issues related to the faith. We ARE to make judgment calls on behavior that cloaks itself as “christian” when it is not.

To each their own. I never watched it because I hated Desperate Housewives. I used to laugh at the title. Desperate? Where, who, and how? I certainly wasn’t interested in an amped version in Dallas.

Hoo Ra I never watched the Da— show but I am glad it’s being stopped. I was able to watch about ten minutes one evening but no thanks. It seems that TV writers have one thing in mind shock and rating’s, making them unable to write a good script. Every show must now include a Gay couple to get the 6.5% of gays watching TV for their show or they are drummed out of the writer’s guild.

Being an avid supporter of not letting anyone tell me what I should think, I watched the show. There were elements of the show that I did not like but for the most part, I agree with Kristen Chenoweth that the show did not cross lines. The first time I watched the show, I was thinking that the writers did a fair job of portraying my home town in Georgia to a tee.I laughed so hard, I was crying. It was amazing to me also, that Christian friends of mine would denounce this show on public forums like Facebook and would then vehemently vocalize their opinion of their favorites on The Batchelor. Laura Bush used to say that she was a big fan of Desperate Housewives and everyone got on the bandwagon with that. Seriously, I think the show would’ve done better if they had simply named the show Good Christian Hipocrits. That (the theme of Christian hipocracy) was the actual theme of the show.

    “Chenoweth, a practicing Christian…..”

Ha ha ha ha ha. She needs some more practice. What exactly is it she’s practicing? Giving all of a good example of blasphemy?

This woman is perpetuating the world’s view of christians. Since “friendship with the world is enmity with God”, I would suggest our “christian sister” decide who‘s side she’s on! I remember Someone saying “if you are not with Me, you are against Me” and I’m not talking about G. W. Bush.

I must correct your misquote and misuse of the words of The Master. He did not ever say “If you are not with Me you are against us Me.” Actually, exactly the opposite!

When confronted with people driving out demons in the Name of Jesus who were not party with the disciples, Jesus stated “Do not stop him, no one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, FOR WHOEVER IS NOT AGAINST US IS FOR US.

Mark 9:39-40 NIV Emphasis added —-|- (Luke also records this in Chapter 9)

To clarify, I’m not defending the show, it’s content, or the actress’ statement. While I agree with you that “friendship with the world is enmity with God.” James 4:4 —-|-,

GWB is the only one I remember to say “If you’re not for us, you’re against us” and this is a VERY different statement than that of The Prince of Peace

Armorbearer – and I must correct you. See vs 30 in context, of Matthew chapter 12.

26 And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?

27 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges.

28 But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.

29 Or else how can one enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.

30 HE THAT IS NOT WITH ME IS AGAINST ME; AND HE THAT GATHERETH NOT WITH ME SCATTERETH ABROAD.

31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

I generally agree with some christian organizations as I see that they are under attack, but this is why they get attacked. The show was funny and my wife and I enjoyed it. thanks for ruining my Sunday night with my wife. These groups need to get a life and change the channel if they don’t like whats on.

The show is off because it was apparently not any good and couldn’t get viewers. Not because of the FRF. If it had good ratings, it would still be on.

      Your anger is misplaced.

Apparently BOB…the christians weren’t the only ones changing channels or not tuning in at all…the ratings for this sh#tfest of a show were abysmal right at the gate. NOBODY was watching except for you and your purported wife. You really think these hollywood elites would dump a show because Christians protested it?

It wasn‘t the Christian organizations that caused the show’s cancelation, it was the low ratings. Just not enough people shared your idea of entertainment. Although TV has made colossal mistakes in past cancelations (Firefly, Star Trek, etc) I don’t think this is one of them.
