ABC News Uses Actors to Demonstrate ‘Racism’ Surrounding AZ Immigration Law

In a segment for the network’s “What Would You Do?” program, ABC News reporter John Quinones reportedly hired an actor to play the role of a “racist” security guard to demonstrate public reaction to the state’s “anti-immigration law.” Meanwhile, Quinones pretended to be an illegal immigrant.
The aim of the “What Would You Do?” program is to test the morals of unassuming observers to see how people would react in different situations, not knowing they were being filmed. Past social experiments have examined how people respond to homelessness and college hazing practices.
The Media Research Center discovered the questionable move after Quinones explained the undercover concept Thursday morning on Good Morning America: “So, I go undercover, pretending to be someone who is about to be arrested and deported, simply by the way I look,” he said.
The piece featured a cartoonish “security guard” harassing Mexican actors in Tucson, Arizona. Presumably, ABC chose a security guard because impersonating a police officer is illegal. The actor walked into a restaurant and spewed, “I’m just looking to make sure these guys are legal citizens. And if they’re not legal citizens, they shouldn’t be here. They should be deported. They look Mexican.” [MP3 audio here.]
Of course, having this man pretend to be a security guard really makes no sense. (A security guard is going to deport people?) Secondly, for journalists that often attack conservative sting operations, it’s rather odd to see ABC manipulate such a scenario
The Radio, Television and Digital News Association ethics guide states: “Use surreptitious newsgathering techniques, including hidden cameras or microphones, only if there is no other way to obtain stories of significant public importance and only if the technique is explained to the audience.” Was this the only way ABC could do such a story?
What’s worse, Quinones characterizes Arizona’s SB 1070 law as a “controversial new law [that] would give police the authority to question and perhaps deport anyone who, in their eyes, appears to be in the U.S. illegally.”
This assertion is false. The Washington Examiner’s Byron York explains:
Critics have focused on the term “reasonable suspicion” to suggest that the law would give police the power to pick anyone out of a crowd for any reason and force them to prove they are in the U.S. legally. Some foresee mass civil rights violations targeting Hispanics.
What fewer people have noticed is the phrase “lawful contact,” which defines what must be going on before police even think about checking immigration status. “That means the officer is already engaged in some detention of an individual because he’s violated some other law,” says Kris Kobach, a University of Missouri Kansas City Law School professor who helped draft the measure. “The most likely context where this law would come into play is a traffic stop.”
Quinones also states that until his crew “staged our scenario,“ Arizona residents ”didn’t realize… how [SB 1070] might affect innocent people…”
Perhaps the Arizona residents caught up in Quinones misleading social experiment responded with such outrage because what Quinones’ actor/security guard was doing was outrageous. In fact, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has stressed that any such racial profiling would not be tolerated and actually disciplined.
“I will not tolerate racial discrimination or racial profiling in Arizona,” Brewer said as she signed SB 1070 into law.

The rads in the environmental movement have been able to Deamonize and Marginalize anyone who disagrees with their nonsene.
Another example is off-road riding in the US. The radical enviro groups have managed to shut down most public land in our country. The media reaction? Without ever questioning their motives, events like the Barstow-to-Vegas race were vanquished. Their proof? None! They used the Desert Tortise to stop the race. The AMA even had a biologist run the entire route of the race, and they could not find ‘ONE’ burrow in the race route. Heck, lots of the race followed existing right-of way which was used by the military.
Did the media ever, once, cover these proven facts? No! Did they report the fact that when two guys on dirt-bikes rode the route to check for possible sabotage found rail-road ties with foot-long spikes at the end of a large culvert? No! Did they report that if one of the guys hadn’t realized that, ‘hey, I don‘t see any light at the end of the tunnel’ and stopped, that they would have both been impaled on those spikes? No!
This is why biased reporters can and do effect our freedoms.
Walkwithme is a complete idiot! She/He knows full-well that G Beck has the proof to back up what he says. I’m guessing that Walk has no spine, and doesn’t want to face whats ahead for our country. That’s ok. When the crap hits the fan, I’ll protect you.

It is presumed to be reasonable to check citizenship when someone is arrested, for example, just as it is reasonable to check for “wants and warrants” during a traffic stop, but it is not OK to ask people on the street “for their papers.”

So if an officer was to ask me for ID and I couldn’t produce it, they could legally apprehend me until they could identify me just in case I wasn’t wanted on warrants or a felon on the run or something. They could also take my information, run me through the system, and if everything matched land my information is kosher, then they let you walk. I promise you, if I am walking in an all black neighborhood in the late hours of the night and look shady, I am going to be profiled. The cops are going to want to know what I am doing in that neighborhood at that hour. I feel they have every right too. I am an X addict and had this happen many of times. every time they were right. With that being said, if I had an ID on me and did nothing illegal, they could do nothing about it, even if I was carrying drugs on me.
Report Post »Maybe I am being biased because I changed my life around, but after running in the streets for years, I could tell you almost to a T, who the dealers were, who was there copping drugs, and usually even what type of drugs they were going after by the way they looked and acted. I could eve tell who the fake dealers were, those who would sell soap or something instead. Not so easy but certain signals and actions when talking to them would tell me right away chances were they were trying to get over on me.This is why I have no problem with them profiling at air ports. It is very hard to talk and respond as if you are legit if you are not.

And, they’re not stopped unless they have been pulled over or have behaved in such a manner that gives probable cause to request their ID. The problem O‘Barry has is that he doesn’t want FEDERAL immigration laws enforced. That was the reason Arizona made it a STATE law — so they COULD enforce it.

Posted on February 4, 2011 at 2:53pm@SHOWTIME – I think your argument falls under the “presumption of innocence” and like the saying “you’ve got to kiss a lot of frogs before you meet a prince”, you’d likely wind up abusing/harrassing/violating the rights of many citizens before you actually came across an actual illegal immigrant.
I don’t think President Obama had an opinion on the federal immigration laws, in fact I suspect he, like most of his fellow Democrats, didn’t know what the exisiting federal laws were regarding immigrant workers keeping their papers on their person. Either the Democrats knew and choose to act ignorant and make incorrect statements OR they actually were ignorant and didn’t realize they were making incorrect statements.
Call me an optimist, but I like to think of Democrats as being “half-empty…”

Now, any chance he’ll go back and try re-enacting a real scenario that follows SB 1070? You know, a person is stopped for, say, a traffic stop and can’t produce their federal immigration papers/documantation as they were instructed to do when they were given them?
Yeah, probaby not.
But it’s good to know that most Arizonians are against security gurads deporting folks for their looks…

Report Post »There are other states introducing laws similar to Arizona’s. Georgia is one of them. We have a terrible time with Mexican drug cartel cells and drugs being distributed. They just recently caught 35 (45?) in a neighboring county (south of Atlanta), and Gwinnett County just had 1,250 deported. (That’s north of Atlanta.)

@CATB – Yes, I think it was NBC that wanted to show how a GM pickup truck was dangerous in side impacts because the fuel tank was outside the frame rails… So they filled the gas tank to the very edge of the filler neck, used the wrong gas cap so it couldn’t seal, and then just left it sitting lightly on the end of the filler neck. Another vehicle was rammed into the side of the pickup truck, whereupon a fire started… But Wait! – Clearly evident in the video footage were the smoke streams from three model rocket motors that were strapped to the fuel filler neck just below the gas cap and ignited just before the impact! The local fire department had men standing by as witnesses and they were able to confirm all this.
All they proved was that anyone can start a vehicle fire by overfilling the gas tank, lightly balancing a non-fitting cap on the end, igniting three model rocket motors under the open filler neck and slamming a door – hell they didn’t even need another vehicle to ram into it for their test! But from this ridiculous non-real-world test, they insanely condemned GM as a builder of unsafe vehicles.
I’ve never had the stomach to watch any NBC programming ever since. In their arrogance to prove that they were right about the danger of GM trucks, they did all this lying on camera – in front of witnesses and it never occurred to them that anyone would question or investigate their ‘test results’???
I’ve got a test for them to try… Leave all of their overpaid, under-worked reporters on a tiny deserted island inhabited by alligators and surrounded by sharks, with no food or water… and tell them you’ll rescue them with a cruise ship stocked with free booze if just one of them would cut a check for $10 to the ‘Sarah Palin for President’ campaign… At least we’d never hear from them again.

I just don‘t see how suddenly this is controversial when in the 50’s Operation ******* was carried out by our government and deported over a million illegals and many more self deported at that time. Why can’t we have another Operation *******? That’s of course because those in our government are traitors because they are not upholding the oath they took to protect the people from foreign threats, this is a threat to our economy and safety! I don’t care who they are or what they say DEMS or REPUBS they need to stop talking and put and end to this with swift strict laws, and harsh crackdowns against those that are not honoring our country and it’s laws! What about the anchor babies! Let’s at least get the anchor babies ended! This will at least stop the Birth tourism from around the world and maybe even a great number of Mexicans will think twice about coming to start a family here because of it. The Democraps know exactly what they are doing by allowing mass migration of legal and illegal foreigners because they great majority end up voting for them. Too bad that this will just cause the destruction of the country and then everyone will lose.

Yes that’s correct. Dateline aired a slanderous story about GM trucks that supposedly were bombs waiting to go off and blew up even in very low speed crashes. They rigged trucks with explosive charges strapped to the fuel tanks in order to get the footage they needed because they couldn’t get the trucks to do what they were trying to claim they did.
GM ended up accepting a settlement, a public apology aired during Dateline, and the resignations of most of the people that had anything to do with it. Clearly it wasn’t enough, because they’re still staging stories that are based on falacies.
