ABC’s Jake Tapper Hammers New Press Sec. Over Obama’s Budget Claims

Today was new White House Press Secretary Jay Carney’s first time in front of the White House press corps. And ABC’s Jake Tapper completely dismantled him.

Tapper was baffled by how the president can claim his new budget does not add to the national debt, especially considering how it contains measures to “borrow” money to pay interest on the debt. Tapper went back and forth with Carney in almost embarrassing exchange for the “new guy”:

TAPPER:  Jay, welcome.

JAY CARNEY:  Thank you.

TAPPER: If I borrow money from you — to pay — to pay off the interest for -

CARNEY:  You may owe me.

TAPPER: Ten-year rule. If I borrow money from you to pay off the interest for the debt I owe to Geoff, am I not adding to my debt?

CARNEY:  Well, without dealing with hypotheticals, why don’t you — why don’t you –

TAPPER:  The president seems to think that that borrowing money to pay the interest on the debt is not adding to the debt.  I don’t understand that math.

CARNEY:  What the president made clear is that we need to get to a place — and his budget absolutely does this — where we are no longer spending more than we’re taking in.  And what the reality is, is that we have, like a lot of families — you know, like some families might have, debt on their credit card, with interest rates that have to be contended with.  But the first important step to dealing with this issue is getting your regular spending and income in balance so that you are no longer adding to the problem.

The interest is something we have to deal with, and interest payments are a major portion of our long-term debt.  It’s a problem that we need to — that we need to address.  But the — but it — look, it is not an inconsequential deal to propose a budget that cuts as substantially as it does in targeted areas so that the federal government lives within its means in order to be able to continue to invest in the future, because you have to have economic growth, you have to have job creation, if we’re going to address this overall long-term problem.

TAPPER:  I assume when the president calls for an adult conversation, he means that conversation should be forthright and politicians shouldn’t be hiding behind cute language such as “We will not be adding more to the national debt,” even if hundreds of billions of dollars are being added to the national debt in interest — paid on debt that President Obama helped, himself, create.

CARNEY:  Well, the debt is — has been created over a number of years, as you know.  And we came in here with an economic crisis, the likes of which, I daresay, I think nobody in this room has ever seen, and which threatened to head straight into a depression if we didn’t act.

But I also remind you that we inherited, when this administration came into office, this president came into office, an enormous debt that had been piled up in the previous eight years.  And that is part of the problem.  And the interest that you’re talking about is on that debt as well.

But, look, I think it’s important to step back.  The president is — put forward a budget that seriously addresses the need to reduce  spending that also protects the key areas that he thinks need to be invested in so that we can remain competitive, grow the economy, create jobs.  And he looks forward to working with Republicans and Democrats in Congress to, you know, deal with both the budget proposals and the long-term debt.  And he thinks that we can — there is reason to believe that we can — we can get this done.

TAPPER:  Just to button this, you think that, “We will not be adding more to the national debt,” is a statement that stands to scrutiny?

CARNEY:  Absolutely, absolutely.  And Jake, we have explained precisely what that means in terms of new spending; you know, getting our spending and income — I mean, our income and spending into balance — that is an important step towards dealing with our deficit and our debt.

    Well ya all have to admit that from the arm chair, a bag of chips and diet cola, this is really like watching one of those Saturday Night Live skits, that you hope would be really gut busting funny, but a few moments in you‘re pretty sure it’s not gonna be that funny, and then you start feeling for the actors, cause they suck. Ya… kind of like that. SNL had a guy by the name of Al Franken as a comedic player… he really, really sucked, Oh,ya now he’s a US senator?

    wasn’t it by 1935 Hitler had completely controlled the media (and killed off the last opposing newspaper editor) in Germany? why is no one brave enough to stand up and make these OBVIOUS comparisons, because obama is paralleling Hitler to a tee. ~~ American White Christian Conservatives are his “Jews”. he’s NOT an American or he would have realizes We have OUR History and patriotism in back of us, not even bloodthirsty Japan would attack our shores after Dec 7 1941, and we are just the ones to STOP OBAMA.

And if this theory proves to be flawed, please blame the previous administration because we haven’t contributed to this catastrophe and we had no claims to be able to solve this problem before this administration took office….riiiight!       Actually today a buddy of mine on post at Fort Campbell said president bush was there meeting with soldiers. I was tempted to go but didn’t feel like getting arrested. Plus you had to pay for a ticket and wait in a long line. Not worth it.

    It’s really simple. If you take point A, where you have debt A, and then add a budget to that, which we will triangulate as point B, in motion to point C, which we will call the future. As we aggregate A, we logically change the relationship arithmetically to both points B and C, such that as they increase, there is a point at which A comes into equilibrium such that B and C are correspondingly balanced.

    Simple as that. Everything I needed to know about baffling ‘em with BS I learned from Keynes and every car dealer with whom I’ve ever dealt.

      I hope that We The People are smart enough as a hole to see the truth. We never have been in my life. THey will just run commercials about starving and killing the elderly, poinsioning and starving the children and taking away health care for women. That adds up to over 50% of the vote and that is all they need historically; at least in modern history.
      I think the House needs to do what is right with a VERY good strategy too. They need to listen to Dick Morris also in this matter who is on the right page as far as outcome far into the right direction.

      Well, borrowing at a lower interest rate (or with better terms) in order to pay off other debts can be a positive…as long as you leverage the two, and the combined payments on the two, do not exceed the sum of the original. But, if we are borrowing more, JUST to pay the interest on past debt…oh, lord.

      We got the new budget finished; the new budget is in. It’s costs more money than we bring in, so we are going to need to generate more money from the peasants. We’ve already began doing that last year, but the stupid #**!? don’t know that. We cut the interests of the public to make it look like we can’t cut anymore, but we were able to keep our ‘special interests’ intact. No, we won’t even consider staying within our means, if we need more we just put our hands a little deeper in your pockets until we get what we need. Isn‘t that how it’s supposed to work?? Just look the other way and trust us,,,,we’re the government!!

      Poor guy. He’s asked to defend one of the biggest, boldest, outright lies told by the POTUS in recent memory. They didn’t even come up with any type of defense before hand – just continue to repeat the lie and hope it goes away quietly. Kudos to ABC – typically the White House Press Corps seems to just ignore blatant lies coming from the podium. Maybe a turn for the better with the media in the breifing room, but I’m not holding my breath.

      The bad news is about half the people in this country pay no attention, and simply heard on facebook that Obama is slashing spending and balancing the budget. He’s a hero for lying through his teeth.

If Obama can’t explain it how on earth is someone else supposed to.       I’m looking on this budget issue and I see only one thing will save us. Don’t rise the debt ceiling. Purpose for that was to control spending. This is it. This is the moment to say STOP!!! Make the difficult choice. You getting 2T $ from taxes and this is all you have. If Bimbama push this budget tru next year he will ask not for 1.6T extra but 2 or more. Im ready to take bets.

      I am now beyond embarrased for our country. This is turning out to be the WORST four years of my life … unbelievable.

      Like Liberals always say… “if you repeat something over and over people are stupid enough to believe it.” Except it is only the liberals buying it. Wasn’t it this administration that said “if you don‘t have the money don’t go to Vegas!” I guess that only works for the common people.

      I didn’t miss the fact they are still trying to BLAME Bush.. I know Obama THINKS the school kids have been dummied down but EVEN they can add and subtract which is more than I can say about our so called HIGHLY EDUCATED PRESIDENT.. doesn‘t matter WHERE the debt came from UNLESS it’s ALL paid off he’s accumulating more debt..

      I have enjoyed Jake Tapper on ABC for a couple years now, and while he is not sphinx-like when it comes to his political leanings, he frequently goes after the left and the right in pursuit of truth and logic.

      Jay Carney & Jake seem to be friends (from joint appearances on this week), but the logic of the administration demanded questioning, and Jake didn’t hold back…

      To a rational person, this administration is totally counter-intuitive. It seems each and every move that is made is cross- grained. Even the outright lies are so blatantly presented that I get the feeling that I’m being baited. I think to myself that either they are taking me for an uneducated fool, or I’m in a parallel universe where things, facts and figures are not the same.
      Are we being pricked and prodded to take some foolhardy action? Are they hoping for an open revolt?
      We’ve taken a lot of crap from this administration and most of us are fed up with it. Are we not?
      The government is going to keep pushing at us, and pushing at us. It’s like they want the “worst case scenario” to manifest. Now, here is the wierd part…..they seem to be fomenting a revolt upon themselves!! This is a thoroughly creepy thought. It’s sort of like a bully in a schoolyard, who keeps harassing you, hoping that you will eventually stand up for yourself, just so he can beat you down. Is this some kind of cloward/piven type of tactic?

      It is like he was trying to impersonate Gibbs, he just needs to say l am no expert on math, I am not a budget expert, I am not an Obama mind reader etc. Ones he gets those phrases down it will be a more polished impersonation. He is off to a great start on the uhms, and ahs however.

      Gibbs advantage in telling a bold face lie is that he truely believes the people are stupid. This guy wont last a year.
      My honest opinion is that this position (Press Secretary) should be unconstitutional. Or at the very least be conducted under oath.

      I watched Barack Obama’s press conference the other day and was pleased to see more reporters asking tougher questions… Obama did not look comfortable and almost appeared to blow a fuse at one point (calling the press “impatient”) but the time for soft questions and strokes of praise are over…
