ABC’s Jake Tapper Stumps Press Sec. Jay Carney on Debt Ceiling

It’s not often that Press Secretary Jay Carney gets stumped. He usually has a talking point or retort ready for anything. But when ABC‘s Jake Tapper went on the offensive with some very logical questions during Thursday’s press briefing, Carney didn’t really know how to handle it.

Essentially, Tapper asked which is worse: default now, or compromising with Republicans and passing an extension that would lead to another debt ceiling vote in a few months? The point Tapper seems to be making is, if default is as bad as the president is making it out to be, why not budge and come back to the debt ceiling issue later?

That seems like a good question, and no one but Tapper seems willing to ask it. Why? Well, look at how Carney responds (starting at about 10:30):

Transcript below via Tapper:

TAPPER:  The worst-case scenario here is a default, right?

CARNEY:  That is a bad scenario.  I’m not sure — I mean –

TAPPER:  Is it worse –

CARNEY:  You know, there are things you could anticipate. But I — yes.

TAPPER:  Is it worse than voting on the debt ceiling again next year?

CARNEY:  The uncertainty created by regular votes on whether or not, for the first time — you know, and if you think it’s — there’s — there are political –

TAPPER:  Weren’t there regular votes on raising the debt ceiling during the Bush years?

CARNEY:  There are — well, but it had not — it had not become — look — yeah, boy, there were.  It’s funny that you should mention it, because — (laughter) –

TAPPER:  There were.  Every year –

CARNEY: — collectively, the Republican negotiators in these room — in this room with the president have voted to raise the debt limit 25 times.  The speaker of the House has voted six times.  The majority leader of the House has voted to raise the debt limit five times in his career in the House.  Senator McConnell has voted to raise the debt limit eight times; Senator Kyl, six times.

TAPPER:  Senator Obama voted against it one time.

CARNEY:  He — and he has made very clear that he now views that as a mistake.

REPORTER:  Over what period is that?

TAPPER:  My point — my point is, which is –

CARNEY:  Since 1990.

TAPPER:  — which is — I don’t understand this ultimatum that the president brought into the room with him that this needs to extend into 2013.

CARNEY:  Because the kind of atmosphere that’s created now that has brought us to the brink of doing something that has never been done before is unlikely to improve in an election year.  And we are not, as I said before, the kind of country that wants to or should put in doubt in the global economic market — you know, or raise the question, on a regular basis, whether or not we’re going to default on our obligations. I mean, as Caren (Bohan of Reuters) just mentioned, we have rating agencies putting us on warning; I mean, this is not good for our economy.  So if we do this regularly, you can bet that it will have a negative impact on our economic prospects, on our growth and our job creation because it creates uncertainty about the economic environment that we’re — that businesses are operating in.

TAPPER:  You’re comparing it to extending the debt ceiling to 2013. I’m not; I’m comparing it to default.  Which is worse?  Because the president is saying essentially he would rather have it default than have to vote on this again next year.  That doesn’t make any sense.

CARNEY:  He is saying that leaders should lead, and we have to do the right thing here.  You can, as a piece of political analysis, have an opinion about it.  The president’s position is, this is not what the United States should do –

TAPPER: I’m analyzing your own statements.

CARNEY:  — and he doesn’t believe we will do it.  And we think — we think we can get to an agreement that’s significant.  And remember, this is all because of an arbitrary connection that was established between the amount by which Congress would have to raise the debt ceiling and the amount by which –

TAPPER: And if I was asking questions of Steele or Buck…

CARNEY: — we should — I mean, and a completely unrelated and arbitrary, political and essentially meaningless connection between the two.

TAPPER:  OK, so that‘s Boehner’s ultimatum, and I’ll — and I’ll ask them about that later.  But I’m asking you about the president.

CARNEY:  So — but Jake, let me answer the question.  We do not think that that is the way that this country should operate.  The president’s made it very clear.

TAPPER:  What the president made clear in the meeting was that he will not –

CARNEY:  Both are bad; I can’t choose which is worse for you.

TAPPER:  Really?  They — it — you can’t.  Default might not be as bad as voting on this next year?

CARNEY:  Jake, I’ve answered the question.

TAPPER:  No, you guys are painting a very cataclysmic picture

CARNEY:  Jake –

TAPPER:  — that I’m not challenging — on how bad a default would be. I don’t understand why that is preferable –

CARNEY:  Because we don’t have to get there.  We’re not going to default, Jake.  We’re not going to default.  I think I, in the answer to two previous questions before I got to you, made clear that no one in the room thinks we‘re going to default and the president and the vice president don’t think we’re going to default.  So it‘s a hypothetical that we don’t even have to entertain.

      which great point? The one where he states “Leaders should lead.”? I believe that Mr. Obama is the President of the United States and in the capacity he should be the one LEADING. He is asking congress to give him something to “work with.” Why doesn’t he, the LEADER of this country, come up with his OWN ideas? He can’t. He has NO leadership abilities. He is in over is head and he knows it. This is a disgrace!

      And, just like the president, when this press secretary is grilled on something that isn’t in his talking points he stutters for an answer. Way to go Tapper! At least you’re finally asking the right questions. Let’s keep stumping the press secretary!

      One last thing…enough of the “hypotheticals” Mr. Carney, let’s stick with the FACTS, just the FACTS. But, I guess when the game is always changing, it’s hard to decifer what those FACTS just might be. ARRRRGH! 2012 can’t get here soon enough!

      President Obama wants are so obvious. He is happy to destroy our economy and our “American” way of life. When will people quit believing him and recognize that his well chosen words only lead people to believe what “they want to hear” and not what he is saying. People say he can fix the economy but he is stupid and probably can’t even balance a check book. Obviously if he was smart and wanted to fix the economy he and Pelosi wouldn’t promote the policies they promote. The best thing I could call him is a that he is a thug from Chicago.       So it is clear that Obama and his cronies keep making the ‘default’ threat to the public to scare them,,,,not gonna happen, according to Obama, but they want to keep saying it if no debt agreement is made. Very clear evidence they are fear mongering and threatening to hold the taxpayers hostage. It’s also very clear, then, that they are NOT operating in the interests of the country.

      Its all a dog and pony show, this comes down to one thing, spending by the government is code for campaign contributions. both parties play the same game.

      If the republicans vote to raise the debt ceiling they will guarantee an Obama re election. if the debt ceiling is raised just track where the money goes. it will go to fund every program that will insure votes for Obama.

      The republicans don’t care if Obama is re elected, its all a game, in four more years when a republican is elected they will just blame Obama and ask to raise the debt ceiling and blame him as they blamed Bush.

      Its all about power. the more they all talk, the more they just try to spin and confuse the American people.

      Its very simple to solve, you don’t spend more than you bring in, you cut spending to meet your budget. when your in debt you don’t create more debt. you don’t create more debt and increase revenue to cover it, that is insane.

      definition of insanity, doing the same things over and over and expecting different results. remember all of this and how quick things will be forgotten if they raise the debt ceiling, just track the spending and you will see what it was all really used for.

      This Country lives in fear of what we are going to loose and fear of what we are not going to get. our government knows this and plays on our fears.

      If the Republicans raise the debt limit at the same time they need to attach a bill authorizing the mint to print $500.00, $1000.00 and $5000.00 bills again because the dollar won’t be worth squat. Back in Germanys day during world war II you needed a wheelborrow to buy a loaf of bread. At least in the future you could fill up your pockets with $5000.00 bills to buy a loaf of bread.

    It‘s become more than clear that Obama is in a snit and if he doesn’t get his way he’ll put the country into position to default. He already said he’d stop social security and veterans payments, (to people who contributed in one way or another to receive those benefits) over cutting ObamaCare, welfare, food-stamps, public housing, etc. It is clear that his intent is to destroy the country.

    Then of course there are the Republicans, whose “Plan B” is just to give the President what he wanted in the first place; full authority to raise the Debt Ceiling (but even let him do it at his own whim), and without any budget cuts at all. If THAT happens, then I’ll certainly vote for Obama (in fact a straight Democrat ticket) so that rather than extending out the suffering by believing in two-faced, back-stabbing Republicans, we can let the country go down the tubes quickly and then let the chips fall where they may.

      Actually – McConnel’s plan says the Pres can raise the debt ceiling 3 more times before the end of his Pres term BUT must cut $1 of spending for every $1 the limit is raised and must make the cuts specific…

    Carney can’t answer it because it is all politics.

    Obama is using it to hold the Republicans, and America hostage, creating a crisis that he can come in and be the hero (in the media’s eyes) in the end once again.

    Does anybody know what the new ceiling Obama is asking for is?

    At the current rate of spending, if he wants to extend it to 2013, the new ceiling would have to be $20 TRILLION.

    Moody’s and S&P would drop our credit rating in a heartbeat.

    I pity Obama’s replacement in 2013. Obama has kicked the pain of everything from Hell Care, to Taxes, to Debt down the road to then, and it will be an even bigger mess than his failed presidency.

      Be careful with drawing broad conclusions about ABC just because Jake has some scruples. My wife and I predicted in May that Tapper would be leaving ABC by the end of the summer. Jake is the sole remaining vestige at ABC of a true journalist who actually reports and questions the news instead of promoting Obama ‘12. Won’t be many more instances of this type of professional questioning before ABC whacks Tapper….See Stephanopolous and Sawyer…Two of the most reprehensible Obama apologist ideologues even on the MSM. Jake and Fox would be a good match and I think it will ultimately happen…BUT, IN THE MEANTIME, DON’T LAY UNDO PRAISE ON ABC….As journalists, they are every bit as corrupt as the rest of the lame stream media.

    Let’s think about believing the Democrats when raising the debt ceiling, when they did Obamacare it was behind closed doors, GOP was not allowed to participate, then it was passed with No One reading it, totally unbelieveable. Then you have to look at how many times Obama has flat out lied. I do not know how any sane person could trust him. I would honestly believe Casey Anthony before I would believe Obama with the future of our country…

      It‘s plain to see that Obama doesn’t want the 2012 budget to interupt is 2012 campaign this why he won‘t sign anything that doesn’t go through to 2013. It’s as plain as the nose on your face.

    The worst part of this charade is the fact the left doesn’t want to admit it has NO CLUE about what would REALLY happen if the debt ceiling were to expire.

    I mean, you ask this question to 100 different “experts” and you get 100 answers. Isn’t there something fundamentally wrong with this picture???

      The real problem is most likely that neither party has figured out how to milk the situation for maximum political gain yet. Instead of coming up with the best plan, they are trying to find a way to game the system to get Obama re-elected or kicked out of office. At some point, someone has to admit that Obama may be a good politician, but he’s a horrible leader. Once you become POTUS, party lines should become secondary to fixing the problems. Ideology is stifling solutions.

      If tax increases and entitlements are off the table, then start cutting everywhere else. Why is that so difficult? They should quit worrying about their damn careers and start worrying about the American public and the country. Politics be damned I say.

      I’m simply not convinced anybody has any real idea what is going on. When you listen to the “talking heads” speak on this issue, how is anybody confident that what they say is true and that they’re not posturing?

      I really believe 100 percent that NOT raising the debt ceiling will be short term pain, but HUGE long term gain. I mean, we have proven that we cannot living our means. At what point does Joe Public understand the fact that he cannot get unlimited health care, welfare, food stamps, pensions, etc.? We‘re in it for at least 15 trillion because of this thinking and I simply don’t understand what is so complicated about it. You either cut now, or nobody gets jack squat in 20 years. I really can‘t believe my fellow citizens aren’t stepping up to the plate and offering to give up portions of their entitlements. All they do is piss and moan.

    So why did Obama say that SS checks might no be going out? Was he fear mongering? Would he actually not pay the military service men and women and not send out SS payments or is he just posturing for effect? I don’t put anything past him, he‘s like a spoiled child who when he doesn’t get his way, he has a tantrum and his is to lash out at everyone and he care little for anything other than his agenda, that is all that matters to Obama.
    The administration keeps trying to comvince the people that this is so hard, it isn’t, we just need to stop spending, thats it, stop spending , cut waste, make government more effecient, cut unnecessary spending. Why is that so hard for those in Washington to do? They continue to tell the American people to do with less. yet they don’t seem to do it themselves.

      Just STOP the foreign aide, raises to his staff and wages to all the Czars we didn’t vote for in the first place and this will be a good start! Start checking all the wasted money going for turtles,teetsie flys etc.. and TADA money saved. Then put a BALANCED Budget forth and get your (OUR) house in order!

    Obama doesn’t want the debt to get in the way of his campaigning in 2012….that’s it.
    It‘s the only reason why won’t sign anything that doesn’t include the 2012 budget as part of it.

    And this is the best the president can do in his choice of a press secretary? The pundits called Obama bright and articulate. You would think he would choose someone to speak about his position who was at least coherent. Is this guy on drugs? I have no idea after reading and listening to that mess what on earth he was saying. I love how Carney gives long answers that have nothing to do with the question. The man cannot form a coherent thought and express it. He did use the phrase, “the president’s made this very clear,” which means what follows makes no sense at all.
    Maybe he should borrow the holy teleprompter.

      That’s simple. Because they know the “useful idiots” can be manipulated by using fear, and it is important to keep that negativity flowing so they can later blame their opponents for the problems they themselves created. “They blocked efforts to solve this crisis but offered no solutions”.

He and the admin want to have a massive default on the debt…at almost any cost, so they can then rebuild the rest of the nation with them firmly in control from here on out.

      Look at the situation from another angle – if Obama & the Dems truly believe not raising the debt ceiling will cause dire consequences – perhaps thats what they want….They know how volatile the American people are at this point…and they‘ve pushed the Reps into a position where they can’t blink or compromise.

      No Raise in the debt ceiling = Downgraded financial & world status triggering US financial chaos = Crisis situation used to declare martial law = no 2012 election = Obama has a free hand to do anything he chooses.
