Abortion Doctor Charged With Killing 7 Babies With Scissors

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A doctor who gave abortions to minorities, immigrants and poor women in a “house of horrors” clinic was charged with eight counts of murder in the deaths of a patient and seven babies who were born alive and then killed with scissors, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Dr. Kermit Gosnell, 69, made millions of dollars over 30 years, performing as many illegal, late-term abortions as he could, prosecutors said. State regulators ignored complaints about him and failed to inspect his clinic since 1993, but no charges were warranted against them given time limits and existing law, District Attorney Seth Williams said. Nine of Gosnell’s employees also were charged.

Gosnell “induced labor, forced the live birth of viable babies in the sixth, seventh, eighth month of pregnancy and then killed those babies by cutting into the back of the neck with scissors and severing their spinal cord,” Williams said.

Patients were subjected to squalid and barbaric conditions at Gosnell‘s Women’s Medical Society, where Gosnell performed dozens of abortions a day, prosecutors said. He mostly worked overnight hours after his untrained staff administered drugs to induce labor during the day, they said.

Early last year, authorities went to investigate drug-related complaints at the clinic and stumbled on what Williams called a “house of horrors.”

Bags and bottles holding aborted fetuses “were scattered throughout the building,” Williams said. “There were jars, lining shelves, with severed feet that he kept for no medical purpose.”

The clinic was shut down and Gosnell’s medical license was suspended after the raid.

Gosnell and four workers were charged with murder, while five others were charged with controlled drug violations and other crimes. None of the employees had any medical training, and one, a high school student, performed intravenous anesthesia with potentially lethal narcotics, Williams said.

All 10 defendants were taken into custody, authorities said.

Two listed numbers for Gosnell in Philadelphia have been disconnected. Defense lawyer William J. Brennan, who represented Gosnell during the investigation, noted that the doctor served patients in a low-income city neighborhood for decades.

“Obviously, these allegations are very, very serious,” Brennan said.

The grand jury said the woman who died was a patient who came to Gosnell’s clinic for an abortion and died of cardiac arrest because she was given too much Demerol. Gosnell wasn’t at the clinic at the time, but directed his staff to administer the drug to keep the woman, a healthy 41-year-old woman, sedated until he arrived, prosecutors said.

Gosnell has been named in at least 46 malpractice suits, including one over the death of a 22-year-old mother who died of sepsis and a perforated uterus in 2000. Many others also involve perforated uteruses. Gosnell sometimes sewed up the injury without telling women their uteruses had been perforated, prosecutors said.

Gosnell charged $325 for first-trimester abortions and $1,600 to $3,000 for abortions up to 30 weeks. Abortions are legal up to 24 weeks gestation in Pennsylvania, although most doctors won’t perform them after 20 weeks, prosecutors said.

Some women came from across the mid-Atlantic for the illegal late-term abortions, authorities said. White women from the suburbs were ushered into a separate, slightly cleaner area because Gosnell believed they were more likely to file complaints, Williams said.

“People knew near and far that if you needed a late-term abortion you could go see Dr. Gosnell,” Williams said.

Few if any of the sedated women knew their babies were born alive and then killed, prosecutors said. Many were first-time mothers who were told they were 24 weeks pregnant, even if they were further along, authorities said.

Gosnell got his medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia and is board certified in family practice. He started, but did not finish, a residency in obstetrics-gynecology, authorities said.

“He does not know how to do an abortion. He’s not board certified,” Assistant District Attorney Joanne Pescatore said. “Once he got them there, he saw dollar signs and did abortions that other people wouldn’t do.”

      Why fight what you feel? It is justifiable contempt and horror. Maybe it would get them to really thinking, although probably not likely. Just like the guy about who says “he could care less about the story….” It is apathy that allows the brutality to continue.

      ARX – You got me wrong. Everyone knows where I stand. I have had many arguments and almost lost a dear friend because of it. I cannot speak about it without getting emotional. She and I have agreed not to bring it up any more because it never ends well.

      And I have, by the grace of God, changed a couple hearts. But because I get so worked up, I am not one that God can use with much success. The ones who get others to listen are ones who can speak calmly and listen with respect.

A very close relative is a die hard liberal, and even though every time she visits I promise myself to ‘stay away from politics’, I can’t help going off on a few rants about Obama or something else. I find it so frustrating that someone I love thinks so cockeyed. It really tries my faith because it‘s a struggle between love and watching her way of thinking threaten my child’s future.

    If you are outraged over this, GUESS WHAT? SOME of this is normal procedure in late term abortions and it’s LEGAL. I don’t know how anyone can take advantage of a young mom in trouble just for MONEY like this butcher and kind of like Planned Parenthood does on our tax dollars. It’s a shame and I hope this guy FINALLY loses his medical license. Why is it just on HOLD and revoked anyway? Abortion is a NASTY, disgusting BUSINESS and should in no way be paid for with ANY tax dollars. IMO this guy belongs in jail for murder. How sad and despicable is this story? Makes we cry for those lost little lives….

    Why? My friend got his girlfriend pregnant and the baby was adpoted when she was 6 months pregnant. I blame the women and the doctor. I was told i would never have children, I have 3 beautiful kids. There are many people out there who would love those babies. What sad sad women. And that doctor, well all I got to say is God will pass judgement on him. I think I know where he is going in a hand basket. How can anyone kill innocent babies?

      Normally I oppose the death penalty, this is one of the few times I most likely could make an exception for…to murder a mother, and the seven infants after they had been born, God have mercy on this man, for I never want to serve on a jury or be a judge he may face in court.

      What’s the problem, people wanted dead babies and they got dead babies. Does it really matter how we kill these babies? Do you think a saline solution that burns their tiny bodies is better? I particularly like the one where the good, benevolent doctor simply chops them all up to kill them prior to sucking them out. It was a genious that figured out how to pull the babies feet out first, all the way up to their lower jaw, to prevent the child from taking a breath, and then punctures the base of their skulls with surgical sissors and suctions out their brains. What a master of death. The baby takes no breath, and cannot scream or cry, so it’s all perfectly legal. And you think people who advocate for abortions do not know this? They do, and they permit it. It’s not evil, it’s Pro-Choice!

      The only reason this became a story is because a woman died. Scissors used on a baby outside the womb or vacuumed apart inside the womb…what is the difference?

      Whose soul is blacker, the doctor who murders a few hundred babies, or the politician who permits the murder of millions? But even that isn’t enough for some. Our prez, for instance, as a IL rep voted against a law that would have required medical care be given to babies that survive abortion. Said it would be a “burden on the mother and doctor”. Maybe a quick thrust of scissors in the back is better than being left to die slow, cold and alone on a steel table.

      Nazi Germany? Pakistan? Rwanda? Or the quiet little planned parenthood building near you.

      As others have suggested, this guy was charged with murder for sticking scissors into the base of the living babies’ skulls. The only difference between what he did and a perfectly legal “partial birth abortion” is that the partial birth abortionist is careful to stick the scissors in the skull before the baby completely leaves the birth canal. Hence, the term “partial birth.” The act is the same horrific act in both circumstances. The only difference is that this guy did it a few seconds too late.

      Abortionists are really the bottom feeders of the medical profession. Even the ones who don’t do late term abortions.

      I’m with Cobra on this one. The government has said it’s ok to use a vacumm to suck a kid out and make puree with it so what is so bad about using scissors? Is it because it wasn’t the government way to kill or is it because this doctor(sarcasm) found another more efficeint way to do it and that is why they are so upset?

      @ ROBERTCA Why are you surprised?? It says that he runs a clinic in the LOW INCOME area..Alot of these abortioms were no doubt paid for with YOUR TAXES. When you have laws that allow Dr.’s to murder unborn children LEGALLY you can count on them to get greedy and do it illeagly..Wake up people…Especially Blacks!!! Your young people are committing genoside..AND so are the Whites..I never issued a RED Medical card to a Mexican nor to anyone from the Middle Eastern countries in the 31/2 years that I personally typed them and handed them out at the WELFARE office I worked at…I also never handed one out to an ADULT…They were all teenagers between 14 & 17 yrs old..One way to stop this is to E-Mail your Rep and ask him/her to defund the PLANNED PARENTHOOD organization..This organization should be named THE BIRTH CONTROL BY ABORTION organization..Fiscal year 2008-2009 they paid for 324,800 abortions WITH YOUR TAX DOLLARS!!!

      Cripes, Americans couldn’t even stay together this past November to vote against returning Reps to congress who had voted for TARP…many were re-elected…We The People always seem to be making a choice between bad and worse! How can you unite with this kind of mentality and poor choices? I wish there were a way to unify the true Tea Parties…their decision to “sit together” during the upcoming State of the Union address is just another slap in the face of the Tea Party movement…if you are a member of a Tea Party…call, fax, email your Representative and tell them NO!

      How is Obamacare ALREADY paying for elective abortions? Simple. The sham Stupak deal does not restrict funds for high risk insurance programs, which are already conveniently in place. In liberal states like PA, all you need is a certified version of a killer like Gosnell — and there are plenty of those in the house — to approve the abortion on psychological grounds. PRESTO! As if by magic, another unwanted baby is disposed of, this time using our tax dollars.

All the physicians, legislators, and others who continue to make this “legal” through lies, deception, and misinformation will have much to answer for. Don’t be silent speak up, be courageous and bold and educate people that this is most definitely murder…..If it isn’t then broadcast abortions just like you do many other medical procedure or births.       Is it wrong that I find it ok to waste abortion doctors? I think God would be ok with it, if war is acceptable then war against people who kill innocent babies should be too? I don’t claim to know it all but I think these people need to be eliminated! Yes I said it! Don’t kill babies, kill the doctors that kill them. And BTW, I am pro choice….       Is anyone really surprised by this? After years of late term abortion defenders like Barbara Boxer and other liberals telling us that it’s only done for the “health of the mother”, what do you expect? The act of dismembering a fetus (HUMAN BEING) in the womb and removing it piece by piece is barbaric to say the least! Tell me something, in a partial birth abortion, the baby is brought out feet first and with a small portion of the head still inside the mother, an instrument is inserted into the childs skull causing death. How in Gods name is the mothers health made better by murdering the child at that point? (this isn’t a response to Robertca per se, I just gotta vent) This kind of story really burns me up, these sick Bast**ds in the world.

      People do not have the “right” to terminate a pregnancy. The rights of one individual end where the rights of another individual begins. This includes the rights of unborn children. This is especially true for those able to survive outside the womb.
