Activists Clash With Japanese Whalers in Antarctic Seas

Japan’s Institute of Cetacean Research (ICR) has released video they claim shows an anti-whaling conservation group attacking their ship on the high seas of Antarctica. The video appears to show Sea Shepherd activists aboard an inflatable boat launching flares and smoke bombs at Japanese whalers.

According to the Japanese Ministry of Fisheries, this is the fourth such attack on a whaling vessel this year. The UK’s Telegraph reports:

Hostilities between Sea Shepherd activists and Japanese whalers are common. Last year a Sea Shepherd vessel sank after colliding with a Japanese whaling vessel, and the captain Pete Bethune, was brought to trial in Japan after he was arrested when he boarded one of the Japanese ships to ask the whalers to pay for damages to his ship.

Despite a 1986 moratorium on whaling, Japan is allowed an annual scientific hunt, arguing that whaling is a cultural tradition and the hunt is necessary to study whales.

What the Sea Shepard is doing is tantamount to piracy. This definition from the ever reliable Wikipedia: “Piracy is a war-like act committed by private parties (not affiliated with any government) that engage in acts of robbery and/or criminal violence at sea.”

I my view the Japanese are entirely within their rights to use their navy to capture the Sea Shepard and press criminal charges against its crew.

I can‘t believe that I’m siding with the Sea Shepard on this one even though none of them would agree with me on killing any animals. We have cattle and poultry farms, fish hatcheries, and shellfish farms, there is no breeding program to speak of when it comes to these whales and they are being hunted to extinction. The Japanese should just come clean and say they are hunting for food. Ask for some of their research to be released and you will see nothing. Oh wait they eat krill and travel in large groups around the ocean. Good info, thanks.

Those people are going out of their way to commit atrocious acts but YOU call for people who care and go out to oppose this profound cruelty to be SHOT DEAD because you are despicable and ignorant. Do some research. The whales that are primarily being hunted by the Japanese ARE doing fine. In fact they are overpopulating and squeezing out other species competing for the same food supply.

However the facts of how the whales are doing is irrelevant. The IWC holds no legal authority. They are an advisory board, they do not make law and they cannot enforce their treaties. And by the way the Japanese did not sign the agreement to designate the area as a whale sanctuary, so even if there were some moral obligation to honor such agreements they aren’t even bound by that. And the whole reason Japan even joined the IWC was because they were promised the goal of the IWC was not to ban whaling but to manage the whale populations in such a way that sustainable levels of whaling could continue. The IWC is a whaling organization, not an animal protection organization.

For one ship to attack another on the high seas is just asking for it! The Sea Shepard will soon be on the ocean floor!

I am against whaling, but am torn because of the overall political position of the activists.

I agree whaling is not something I approve of, but these nuts political beliefs are far worse than your average Progressive. Paul Watson skipper of the Steve Erin belongs to a group that advocates massive population reduction by any means necessary. He believes that no major city should have more than 20,000 people in it and no one should be allowed to have children unless they have been approved by a ruling dictatorship and has proven they are worthy by their environmental efforts. These people would put a smile on Stalin’s face their hatred towards humanity is beyond belief. Many of them are from wealthy families , Watson claims to be a vegan but from the looks of him I think he eating something other than what vegans eat. Some day I think the Japanese are going to do them in , years ago green peace messed with the French and French commandos sunk their ship.

Can’t trust anything Japan says. they sank the Ady Gil last year, and they rammed the Sea Shepherd ship as they always do.
They also killed my cousin aboard the USS Indianapolis July 30, 1945 along with 880 other crew, when they torpedoed it, and it sank. That’s something I cannot forgive them for, as they feel no regret doing it.
I’ve known Capt. Paul Watson for 13 years.
I took care of our ships while they were in port in Seattle. I provided shipyard security.
Sea Shepherd saved my life when I started having chest pains.

The activists are nothing more than terrorists. I hope they get sunk. I don’t like whaling either, but a man has a right to make a living. I don’t like smoking, but I do not attack tobacco farmers or scream at smokers.

Violence in any way is not the answer. There are other means to get your position out without setting people’s boat on fire. Or endangering the lives of other people. Period.

Watch “The Cove” a documentary that won an Oscar and you will no longer be torn you will be outraged. There is no rational for whaling.

Whale meat is supposedly delicious. The taste of steak with the consistency of fish (as opposed to alligator which has the taste of fish, but the consistency of steak). I hope to try it someday in Japan. As to those protesters, I say use something stronger than water cannons. Something non-lethal, but still stronger. Sanctimonious jerks.

Whale is like any other resource. To be used sustainably. And, yes, whale meat is delicious. The taste of steak that you can cut with a fork.

Adding a few activists to the whale meat might not be to noticable. Just a thought.
