Actual College Protester: Paul Ryan Not Really a Catholic Because He Believes ‘You Can Determine Your Own Fate’

On April 26th, Catholic Congressman Paul Ryan gave an impassioned speech to students of Georgetown University, defending his budget and championing the principles of fiscal conservatism.  The Blaze went down to interview some of those taking part in the highly publicized protests of the budget chairman’s appearance on the campus.  There, we found a gaggle of Georgetown students, holding a sign that read “Stop The War On The Poor: No Social Justice in The Ryan Budget.”

Paul Ryan Protester Says Hes not a Real Catholic

The students had held the sign for over 45 minutes inside the auditorium where Ryan’s lecture was taking place.  Once they moved outside The Blaze asked the question begged by the sign: “What makes the Ryan budget so antithetical to Catholic doctrine?”

One student-protester (far right, above picture) had a very hard time finding the words to defend her position that Ryan wasn’t a real Catholic, but insisted it was because he believes in “individualism” and that you”can determine your own fate.”

Watch the confusing, stream-of-conscious below (which also includes a statement that the poor don’t have “dignity”):

Stay tuned tomorrow for The Blaze‘s full report on the Georgetown/Paul Ryan Budget protests.

Paul Ryan should never have publicly embraced Ayn Rand. Rand got the motivational power of individualism right but missed the altruism piece that Adam Smith had. She did not believe in altruism, had low empathy, and was not a particularly nice person. This young lady is speaking to the philosophy of selfishness. Her heart is in the right place even if her words may not be.

Altruism is not something that big government can mandate. It comes from the heart. Paul Ryan is, in all likelihood, far more altruistic than the young woman.

She’s clearly no different than those knuckleheads on OWS. When she gets a job and starts paying taxes, she’ll be embarassed to know she opened that gaping maw of a piehole and dribbled such obnoxious nonsense on video where it will now live in perpetuity on th internet. The real problem is that we have lazy empathy.
It is not true empathy to just throw money at a problem when you know the money just makes it worse.
Sometimes it is better for the other person if you stop short of doing things for them and only go to the point of making it possible for them to get out themselves.
It is nice to know though that if I lose my job and go broke that it will automatically force me to have no dignity.

Ask any one of those so called Catholic protestestors: Will you give all that you own and possess over to the Poor and follow Him?

These people are the malevolent mob doing the bidding of the modern Sanhedrin (used as a useful metaphor – not as an anit-semitic indictment.) In today’s context we recognize them as the Useful Idiots but they perceive themselves as the new Bolshevik van guard.

There is nothing more dangerous to society than these indoctrinated types who have been marinated in years of progressive socialist (neomarxist) theory.

Or another useful historical analogy – they are the moral equivalent of the “Good Germans” of the 20th Century. They are animated, politically, just enough to further the cause but utterly ignorant of its true purpose.

The problem is her heart and her brain are NOT in the ‘right place’ Her argument makes no sense and even she is not sure what she is fighting against. She tries to string together slogans and things she heard because she has been brainwashed. Ryan and conservatives have no problems at all helping people, in fact we do it far more than liberals do (her included). even if her heart is in the right place, the people ccontrolling ‘heart is not. all they want is frees stuff and no responsibilities. this has less to do with helping the poor and mnore about people in power trainning weak minded, scared and self entitled children to be foot soldiers. We need to quit helping the enemy justify their actions. If given the chance they would enslave us. Hitlers heart was ‘in the right place’ stalins heart, ets….All dictators hearts are in the right place thats how they gain power in the first place. but convincing supporters they are owed by a common enemy and convincing their enemies that ‘their heart is in the right place’ the road to hell is paved with good intentions and i refuse to be subjigated by ‘well meaning dictators’

REWIND !!! NOW hear this: Each one of us was created for a purpose known only to GOD, known before the creation of the world. NONE of us are accidents. We are all different.
THERE IS NO SUCH THING as COLLECTIVE SALVATION. (well, except in Communism, Islam maybe).

There has only been a ONE on ONE relationship between GOD and each one of us, ever. GOD wants each of us to come to Him on our OWN, by our own free will (which GOD gave us). THIS is the basis of everything.

Charity has nothing to do with the GOVERNMENT TAKING OUR MONEY and handing it out to others.

Liberals are certifiably insane. They think that they can loaf and the rest of us are going to go along with working and handing in our money to their government – bought and paid for with OUR TAX money…and that we’re going to keep working and letting them steal our money and waste it and pay for a bunch of dopes who have nothing more to accomplish in their lives than mooch off of us.

HERE IS THE QUESTION we all MUST ASK: YOU want more TAX MONEY from me? WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH IT?

That’s the answer: WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH IT?

I swear, I can‘t believe we’re talking about my AMERICA!!!

This poor creature cannot articulate Catholic belief on charity and the principle of subsidiarity, much less whether or not Paul Ryan and his budget adhere to Catholic teaching, but you‘re pretty sure that her heart’s in the right place.

Sure, Christ talked a lot about just how much the government should spend on the poor in their quest for dignity. *rolls eyes*

Sorry, friend, but she and thee are just lazy elitists excusing yourselves from the hard work of charity and being ministers of God’s lovingkindness. You look down with condescension (only slightly diluted with pity) on those who you call the poor, confusing personal charity with tyrannical welfare programs and warming yourself by the glow of your Progressive virtue.

What will you answer at the Throne? “And what did you for the least of Mine….?“ ”Hey, I paid my taxes!”

Sorry I wasn’t clear. I don’t agree with her position. Empathy has a dark side when it disempowers people and creates dependency through welfare programs, etc. At the same time, there is no question that a certain percentage of business people are motivated solely by greed. When I said “her heart was in the right place” I meant that she was well-meaning and well-intention. It doesn’t help to demonize or ridicule people. We are called to “love our enemies.” If you want to influence this young ladies perspective–kindness and compassion is the best approach–not anger and ridicule.

MarybethElizabeth: I guess you need to define “the poor”, according to the US census I would be considered “the poor”, but I don‘t feel like I’m “the poor” and I am not looking for handouts from “the not poor”. And “preferential treatment” does that also mean that if a rich and a “poor” man are hit by the same car that I being a good Catholic should spit on the rich man and call an ambulance for just the “poor” man? I am not Catholic but am a Christian and it is by freewill and by my own disgression how I will help others as I see fit, what I take from your comment is that the gov’t has the right and must take from others even me to dole out the “preferential treatment” that is wrong and not the role of gov’t.

Care to specify the New Testament verse that gives “preferential” “treatment” to the poor.

Let’s be clear, Jesus commanded us feed and clothe those in need. OK, give of your time and talent to this end. Don’t want to do so? Answer to Him.

Jesus commanded us to render to Caesar what is Caesar’s.

      Nuff said.

PS This is what G-town produces? Sandra Fluke is in their Law school? K Sebelius is invited to talk on campus? No thanks, I’ll get my Catholicism elsewhere.

PPS Why do we have a Catholic Heirechy if they are unwilling to stand for Christ? This has repeatedly and deeply injured the Church in the recent past and here it is again.

      @ME – you are wrong.

God would surely NOT condone stealing money from one person and giving it to another.

God Himself gave us free will.
God Himself gave us the commandment “thou shall not steal”

No matter how you try to interpret it God gave us free will. If God Himself who is all powerful did not force us to give to the poor, then how can we break his commandments and force people to give.

God did say, for those of us who believe, that if you do not help the least of these, you will burn in hell. I can’t see how voting for enslavement of the rich qualifies.

Therefore Ryan is correct. He is willing to stand up for the commandment “Thou shall not steal”, he respects free will and he give personally to charity.

The Catholic Church releases their teachings in Encyclicals.
      Look it up.

Catholic Church teaching demands there be a preferential treatment of the poor.

This is fact. You may not agree with it, as representative Ryan obviously doesn’t, and you may construct rationalizations for yourself, or adopt the devil’s rationalization that a tax is theft, but that is what the Church teaches.

The Catholic Church does not teach that “[t]here should be preferential treatment of the poor[]“ but ”preferential love for the poor.“ ”Preferential treatment” & “preferential option” have their roots in Latin American liberation theology which the Church has banned (though the term “preferential option” is still used). It does not mean the poor get free stuff but rather that “the Church shows a preferential love of the poor and voiceless, because the Lord has identified himself with them in special way.” So Catholics (& all Christians) are supposed to seek, as Jesus did, to love & serve the poor & those who can’t speak for themselves (babies in the womb, orphans, abused children, the elderly, the disabled, etc). How loves is a prudential decision. One size doesn’t fit all; changing welfare is not automatically evil. Recently the Holy Father (HF) has spoken against govt programs that fail to uphold the dignity of the poor by making them dependent on handouts. Work is good & necessary for us to be fully human. (The HF & some of the US bishops make opposing statements on this issue; the HF trumps opposing bishops.) Catholics need better guidance on Church social teaching but many US priests teach liberation theology-lite so we get voters who think welfare cuts are as important as abortion. We need faithful priests/teachers to provide guidance on social teaching & clarify what “prudential” means. Ryan’s budget is his prudential decision & that’s Catholic teachi

This will not end well if things go this way.

My prediction is the U.S. Military will NEVER follow orders issued against American citizens particularly inside the U.S. itself. The current administration has no credibility with our military and the latest campaign stunt backlash is a huge sign of that fact.

True American patriots and conservatives outnumber the far left by overwhelming numbers. WE SURROUND THEM!

Between the U.S. military ands the patriots at then end of the day the far left does not stand a chance.

For some time now my feeling is that Obama would never permit a peaceful transition of power this fall. I do not think his personality will permit it. The hope is that regardless of all the distractions and violence that may break out and encouraged by the left the election moves FORWARD (wink, wink) and Obama is defeated by a wide margin.

I would caution though that things in this country will likely be tense after the election regardless of who wins.

Obama is using the young people to steal from to pay for everything.
He sold them out for Obamacare…raising the loan rates to pay for it and also causing their healthcare premiums to be raised to pay for the older people who need it, and adding a mandate to do it. The youth are the ones hurt the most by our Marxist in Chief and they are stupid to realize what is being done to them. Obama is counting on them being ignorant and gullible and voting for him again.
He has not helped anything that is affecting them and he is stealing from their futures. Half can’t get jobs because of his war on businesses. There are concepts about free will which state that many decision of a person life are determined or heavily influenced but the person still has occasion to exercise free will. The young people are being sold down the river by the Obama administration. The Democrats decided to up the student loan rate to pay for Obamacare when they passed it….allowing the students to pay a higher price for their tuition to pay for Obamacare, plus forcing those young people to pay a higher price for their healthcare to cover the cost of the older, and sicker group of people because young people are usually healthier and would thus have a lower rate if government were not interfering. On top of that they mandating buying it in addition to mandating that the youth pay a higher rate than they otherwise would have. THE YOUTH DO NOT UNDERSTAND they are being taken to the cleaners by this administration. The Obama people frame everything with lies and half-truths and figure the youth are stupid enough to buy into it. Their stategy is “perception” over “reality”. They do the same thing to the elderly, frame it like the Republicans are the evil ones. The Obama people are courting the ignorant, the lazy and the gullible. Hopefully people will wake up and actually look at the facts, read the bills and figure out the ramifications of those bills that are being rammed down our throats. Social Justice in the Catholic definition and social justice in the Jim Wallis sense are two very different things. Unfortunately, those students do NOT know the difference. This administration plays off the uninformed minds of our youth, or the minds that have been indoctrinated by Marxists professors. Really sad that the truth is not out there anymore.

Oh look, a student (likely still a teenager) with poorly thought out opinions. Stop the presses!

What I‘d really like to see The Blaze do a story on is the content of Ryan’s speech, what promises he makes, and what goals he sets. It seems like he has a good head on his shoulders and the will to carry the fight. But all we’ve seen on him here is “SOROS-LINKED CATHOLIC GROUP & 90 PROFESSORS PROTEST PAUL RYAN AT GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY“ and ”ACTUAL COLLEGE PROTESTER: PAUL RYAN NOT REALLY A CATHOLIC BECAUSE HE BELIEVES ‘YOU CAN DETERMINE YOUR OWN FATE’.”

How about some real meat instead of listing the opinions of meat-heads?

I haven’t read it, nor has The Blaze reported on it; hence my issue with their reporting. Want to whip it up into an article? I’m looking for the transcript now online.

      @Billy

      Found it now: http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/297054/paul-ryans-whittington-lecture-daniel-foster

What do you think of it?

I’m finding myself nodding at a lot of his points, and shaking my head at others. Some ideas he proposed (ex: avoiding higher interest rates in the future) are in direct opposition of what other Blaze contributors have suggested (see Josiah Ryan’s article yesterday titled “Higher, not Lower interest rates will save higher education”).

He does seem to contradict himself: he claims that Obama is divisive and failed to focus solely on job creation by going into health care reform and green initiatives (I agree with him on both points), but then veers off course by discussing, among other points, religion and Medicare. I don’t fault him for taking to those topics, but he could have presented it better if he didn’t blast Obama for working on other issues besides jobs as well.

I do like that he extends an olive branch as well; immediately after decrying partisan politics, he mentions working with Democrats to lower the tax rate and close loopholes for the wealthy. However, he then again veers off from the “plan to add jobs” angle to talk about the fundamental nature of American democracy. Again, not a bad topic, but not the one he, in his own words, says should be at the forefront.

I wish there was more of an actual plan than vagueness and emotional appeals, but it’s a speech. Pretty good overall.

      Your take?

Maybe I’m missing it; I see a lot of talk about it but no links to the transcript. I provided it after searching online though. I feel like I’ll need to be out of work to really digest it, but my lunch break is over.

So in the meantime, your take? What parts did you agree with, disagree with? What parts do you wish he spoke more or less on?

Thanks for the review; it reminds me of the interview two weeks ago with Arroyo of the World Over Program (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YuO_fuj6nM&feature=plcp ).

Ryan is courageous. He put a plan “out there” knowing it he would be bashed with it. By my count this is his third bashing since 112th convened?

      @Jiml

Thank you for the link; unfortunately I’ll have to save it for later (videos are frowned upon in my office). From what I’ve read online, one of the things Ryan’s plan does is keep the current spending increase cap at 3%, compared to Obama’s 4.5%. My major issue is that neither plan addresses reducing our debt. I like Ryan’s ideas about simplifying the tax code and closing loopholes; however from what I’ve read his plan will still be increasing our debt. For all the talk on helping out the future and preserving America, I can’t see his plan as doing much besides slowing our race to the bottom.

Again, it‘s just what I’ve read; I look forward to the video.

      Sorry Locked,

I should have been more clear.

I meant that there was a link to the C-SPAN Video. Did not know you were Blazing at work.

I like to watch them speak the words, rather than read a cold, impersonal transcript. It gives me a better take on where they are coming from, and the sincerity of their delivery. I have a good sense of being able to “read” people by observation. Helps a lot when playing poker too.

Ryan is a strait-forward and sincere man. Like Glenn, he has a good heart and cares deeply for this country.

I liked most all of his speech. ESPECIALLY when he takes it to Obama over his “class warfare” and “divisiveness”.

I disagree with your take about Obama focusing on other things than jobs, mainly because the whole time that was going on, all his minions were running around saying jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs has been the focus since day one! Laser like focus on jobs, jobs, lobs.

Ryan was right to call him on it.

I also liked his statements about the Reagan era, and the optimism for, and about America and it’s greatness. I am tired of the negativity of this administration.

      I hope for change !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the whole world has gone crazy. There is no respect for anyone or differing opinions. When did it start? After Obama said he would unite the country and then he was elected and just the opposite happen. I give all the credit to Obama for lowering the standard of debate and dividing American and encouraging protests. He and his buddies (old 60s hippies and Marxists) have implimented their plan and it is working. Treason and deception is their hallmark.

I think it all started in Wisconsin . The unions “ occupied ” the legislature after Walker was elected and tried to institute budget cuts. Then came the buses. Then came the professional , ready-made posters. Then came the protestors. Then went the fleeing Democrat legislators to Illinois , Obama’s home state. Yes, it all started in Wisconsin when all of the allies joined forces : Big Labor, Democrat politicians , and the “organizers ” in the White House / Center for American Progress / Lap Dog Media . All joined together to Occupy America….Been Hell ever since…

I think it started with the Black Harvard Professor and the White cop doing his job…you know, the one who acted “stupidly”. “o” stuck his nose in that and hasn’t stopped sticking. He chooses winners and losers, and tries to control opinions by stepping in when he sees an opportunity to move the window.
