Editor’s note: the actual headline the AP sent out with this were story reads, “More than 7 million candles recalled for fire risk.” We can’t make that up.
WASHINGTON (AP) — More than 7 million candles are being recalled because of concerns the cup holding the candle could melt or catch fire.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission says the tea lights were sold under the Chesapeake Bay Candle and Modern Light brand names.
They were sold at Home Goods, Target, Wegmans and other stores nationwide between July 2009 and February 2011.
The CPSC says the candles have a clear plastic cup that can melt or ignite, posing a fire and burn hazard.
The importer, Pacific Trade International Inc. of Rockville, Md., has received one report of the plastic cup melting while in use.
No injuries or property damage have been reported.
Consumers can call the company at 800-331-8339 for more information or visit its website at http://www.chesapeakebaycandle.com .

Posted on April 20, 2011 at 10:15amThey use plastic holders? Maybe to make less noise when finished with the candle? Remember the boarding school admonition: “Remember, girls, lights out at 10pm; candles out at 11pm!”

Posted on April 20, 2011 at 10:11amYes, AND you can light the replacement candle from the first candle’s holder if you waited too long to light it from the candle itself! A little lighter fluid might help, or gasoline if you’re out of lighter fluid! Be sure to do this indoors, especially if you’re a little late in paying your fire insurance! With morgage rates this low, it shouldn’t be too difficult replacing your housing AFTER you get out of your Obamacare facility! And, they might just give you a SuperHero Cape, so your ego isn’t damaged from the POOF of the relight!

Posted on April 20, 2011 at 9:36amAnother way to avoid the fire risk is not to light them. Sort of the “Simple Simon” principle.

Posted on April 20, 2011 at 9:16amLet me see if I understand this. Some rocket scientist thought it would be a good idea to put a candle with an open flame in a plastic container. Knowledgeable consumers bought these candles and agreed it was a good idea to have an open flame in a plastic container so they lit them. Then they left them burning and did not pay any attention to the open flame burning in their homes, the plastic melted and bad things happened. Am I missing something here?? Why would anyone but a complete IDIOT light a flame in a PLASTC container?? And why does anyone need the GOVERNMENT to tell thwem that it is a STUPID IDEA and you should not buy and use these things???

Good points but remember there are people that voted Obama for POTUS. The woman in Florida thought it was a good idea to drive with HOT coffee in her lap and now we have warnings on coffee cups. Stupid people need to be warned of danger because common sense isn’t common anymore.

Report Post »The reason for the plastic cup is:—— it is cheap! The tea candle is SUPPOSED to be placed inside a nonflammable container. If prudence of this sort is exercised; no fire hazard. A stink hazard certainly. Furthermore an open flame inside a structure, common sense dictates, requires close monitoring.
Nanny state nudging is always talked about here….once again it is showing up.
