Addressing High Tuition Costs, Denver College Cuts Tuition in Half… For Illegal Immigrants

The cost of college tuition has skyrocketed in recent years and the issue has become a leading cause among members of the Occupy Wall Street movement, who claim education is fundamental right. They might be happy to know that help is finally on the way… for illegal immigrants.

Metro State College of Denver trustees on Thursday voted 7-1 in favor of a plan that will give illegal aliens a 58 percent tuition break, making them the first college in the country to lower tuition for non-citizens, CBS4 in Denver reports. The state legislature could decide to reduce state funding as a result, one Colorado lawmaker says.

State lawmakers shot-down a bill that would have lowered tuition for illegal immigrations during their last session. Further, CBS4 reports similar laws have been defeated five times in the last nine sessions.

CBS4 in Denver breaks down the details of the new tuition guidelines:

About 300 students would benefit from the tuition change. Those students would also have to meet admission standards. The plan would cut the cost of tuition in half for those students.

The new tuition rate breaks down like this: $6,716.60 per year for a full-time undocumented immigrant student. This compares to nearly $15,985 per year for out-of-state tuition and $4,304.40 per year for in-state tuition.

The new rate will take effect this fall.

Metro State College of Denver will officially change its name to Metro State University of Denver on July 1.

“There are no tax dollars involved, no subsidy, they don’t get anything special just a reduced tuition rate,” Metro State Trustee Terrance Carroll told CBS4.

However, some critics argue that lower tuition is in fact preferential treatment.

Metro State College of Denver Lowers Tuition Cost For Illegal Immigrants by 58 Percent

Colorado State Rep. Jon Becker (Source: colorado.gov)

Colorado Rep. Jon Becker, a Republican representing Fort Morgan, Colo., argues the college is also disregarding the decision already made at the state capital.

“The state is giving the college money which goes to paying each of their instructors and keeping up the buildings,” he said. “If one college decides it’s going to break out and do one thing we’ve voted down at the capitol, then we have to take a close look at whether or not its subsidized and how are they figuring it’s not subsidized.”

State Sen. Pat Stedman though came out in support of the plan, commending the school for “leading” the state legislature, KMGH in Denver reports.

“You are leading where the legislature has so far, not,” Stedman said during public comments before the trustees voted. “What you are doing by offering this opportunity and making this tuition affordable is going to offer them [students] the opportunity for a brighter future which is what this institution is all about.”

Most at the Metro State College of Denver trustees meeting were reportedly in support of the proposal. One of the college’s graduates, however, was not.

“We need to let the university be the light of truth and not political correctness,” Farber said.

Claudia Trejo, apparently in the U.S. illegally, told KMGH that “before this vote, college was a step too far away from me. But now that this vote has happened, I‘m able to come and I’m able to afford it.”

It is unclear whether the move by Metro State College of Denver will cause a domino effect and if other colleges will follow suit.

When I lived in various Countries in Europe… I had the Legal Right to Obey all their Laws & Regulations. So, just how do Illegal Aliens claim to have Rights in a Nation not of their Citizenship? Especially, when if they Obeyed the Law… they would not be here!

Any college that allows illegals should lose all federal funding for not following U.S law. If they were say ban homosexuality they would lose federal funding for not following the rule of law. Well illegals immigrants are ILLEGALLY IN THE COUNTRY in violation of federal law.

Let’s go back in time. In 1973, while serving in the Navy, I opened a bank account, transferred my funds to it, and did everything I needed to do to establish myself UNDER THE LAW to make my Dad’s home my new home, as I was getting out of the Navy, and wanted to come to Bremerton, Washington, to live and go to school. Note:1973! All I needed was to actually reside in the State for 90 days prior to the election. I did that, getting out of the Navy and coming to my new home in June, 1974. I got a ballot, living in Bremerton, and voted.
But: The VETERANS ADMINISTRATION, acting as an agen for Olympic College in Bremerton, ruled that I was an OUT OF STATE RESIDENT and charged be tuition accordingly. I had to fight all the way to the State Attorney General’s Office to get it resolved, but NOT until the State settled a UNION dispute and got the Olympic College Staff back to work and not on a picket line!
I then presented my case and doclumentation to the VA rep at Olympic College, and they were foto refund the overcharging of my tuition, etc. This was in early 1975. I filed my complaint in 1974.
I played by the rules, was ATTACKED BY THE FEDERAL GOVERMENT I SERVED, beat them, and still live in Bremerton.

Reading this is maddening, and another reason why I will not vote for the Democrats. The people responsible for my troubles were put in while Johnson was President.

Since its a state college I would assume that it receives a chunk of state money. the state could withhold a preset amount from their subsidy per number of illegals sponging off of the taxpayers. Since the college feels so strongly about this, they ALONE should pick up the tab. Just a thought..

This is not insanity. This is the well planned design to slowly takeover America transforming it into a marxist UN state nation. You are seeing America destroyed from the inside while you sit and watch. These people want a UN one world gov. America is a failed experiment in the marxist eyes. It’s time for marxism. Down with the flag. Down with your heritage. Take you guns. Off to the FEMA camps soon.
You are at fault for sitting by and watching your freedom taken without a fight. You are at fault for not electing Constitutional leaders. You are at fault for not demanding and fighting for freedom. You have let sin take over America without being salt and light. This is Nazi Germany just before Hitler came to power.

You hit the nail on the head. I repeatedly try to get people to get up and do something to help us take our country back, but all I get are excuses as to why they can‘t do anything or why it’s just too impossible. The biggest one I hear is, “this is all foretold in the Bible, you can’t change it.“ or ”settle down, relax, God’s got this.” As I see it, there are a handful of people who still believe in our country strong enough to get up and fight for our freedom and a whole lot of “welfare patriots” who will sit on the couch and let us do the hard fighting of taking our country back, then they will take advantage of every freedom we fight for. They are as bad as the welfare people who just let tax payers support them because they dont’ want to work. We are already Greece, we feel entitled to everything and responsible for nothing.

Not by a long shot. What is Affirmative Action but discrimination against Whites? After 40 plus years, why does someone who’s black get preferential treatment?

Call me racsist, but this is one reason I never bothered to finish college. Why work my white ass off for a degree and compete for a job just so they can GIVE the job to some “person of color” who barely got a High School diploma?

So, I went into Government Service and….the only people who would advance were Women or Blacks. My problem is: I wasn’t black enough or have a pair of boobs. So, I worked my career on the lower levels. But at least I EARNED my retirement!

The most agitating thing about illegal immigrant preference is that people seem to forget the first word in this two-part moniker…ILLEGAL. What part of that don’t people get? You apply for a visa, you get a visa, you come here to work…legally! Why would we give ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS anything other than a ride back to where they came from? This takes away from American citizens and that’s not right. For the many who are unemployed because of this horrible economy, the help they could use has been stigmatized by this be these people getting handouts meant for American citizens who are in need,

      This is a political issue!!!
There are those on both sides of the aisle that want to go the ‘Dream Act’ route.
They are both pandering to the ‘ILLEGALS’ for votes.
If you consider all of the forms of taxpayer funds that go to ‘ILLEGALS’, from public schools, health care, food stamps, tax returns, etc., it would be 100′s of Billions of dollars a year.
These government officials that swear an oath, ‘to defend U.S. against all enemies, foreign and domestic’, have broken their oath. These ‘ILLEGALS’ are enemies of the U.S. economy!!!!
      Enough said!!!!
I’ll take my chances, and vote for Romney, because I know what a loser we have in the White House right now!!!!

Three possibilities. 1. Tax money is susidizing illegals. Solution: Cut off the public funding.
    2. Private pay is subsidizing illegals. Solution: Don’t attend that school unless you are a sucker to see your money go to lawbreakers. Also if you are receiving public tuition assistance then it is back to #1.
    3. The school is sitting on a big pot of money (endowment). Solution: Divest some of it and lower tuition for all students, legal ones that is.

Agreed, all government grants and any type of tax payer money, needs to stop going to that school. There are plenty of people here in America legally who find a college education too much to afford, but they have to make a decision to go into debt or to do something else.

I am not sure what Americans who think like this do not understand about people coming here against the law. No where else in the world would someone who is in a country illegally get so many free benefits. I am all for legal immigrants, its the illegal ones that I have a problem with.
