Afghan ‘Massacre’ Suspect Identified: Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales

WASHINGTON (AP/The Blaze) — A senior U.S. official says the soldier accused in the killing of 16 Afghan civilians is Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the investigation into an incident that has roiled relations with Afghanistan.

American officials had previously said the suspect was a 38-year staff sergeant and that he had spent 11 years in the Army. But they had refused to release his name, saying it is military policy to publicly name a suspect only after he has been charged with an offense.

Bales has not yet been charged. He was being flown Friday from Kuwait to a military detention center at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

CNN also commented on Bales’ arrest today:

According to CNN, Bales had a close relationship with the Afghan people and did work with Afghani tribal elders. What motivated his alleged killing spree has not yet been revealed, as he has yet to be charged, or given a physical or psychological examination following his arrest.

This reminds me of the Vietnam days – horrible beyond words. Had a husband who served as combat medic. They were wrong then and have been wrong now. I am as patriotic as anyone & understand we must have some wars to protect our country and all that but think it horribly unwise to be in these wars & not keeping us safer. After we got Saddam, should have left. American leaders/military Commanders do not understand Islam apparently and it’s costing us all these lives and horror. We don’t fully know yet about this man – who knows. Nothing would surprise me & don’t trust anyone. But on the surface, looks like he did “snap” which one can easily understand – especially after the ridiculous amount of tours! Unbelievable – shouldn’t be allowed to do that many. One is too many. Yes, indeed – all involved need our prayers & I pray our future leaders will learn from these tragedies & not get into these situations again.

      @momprayn,

“But on the surface, looks like he did “snap” which one can easily understand – especially after the ridiculous amount of tours! Unbelievable – shouldn’t be allowed to do that many.”

It’s worth noting that part of the strategy of Bill Ayers, Obama’s buddy who was part of the Weather Underground, was/is to wear out our military. Now that they’ve got a radical Leftist in the White House, it appears that strategy is being played out.

      See here.

      Weatherman Underground manifesto
      http://www.glennbeck.com/content/articles/article/198/43223/

“The goal is the destruction of US imperialism and the achievement of a classless world: world communism. Winning state power in the US will occur as a result of the military forces of the US overextending themselves around the world and being defeated piecemeal; struggle within the US will be a vital part of this process, but when the revolution triumphs in the US it will have been made by the people of the whole world.”

(Ending imperialism is good, to be sure, but Bill Ayers mistakenly believes that the free market is the source of imperialism; but it’s actually Corporatism (as well as our fiat money) which strengthens the state and the politically connected at the expense of everyone else, and which itself is brought about through anti-trust laws which businesses can then use to price out potential competitors.)

On Fox’s coverage of this they said this man had done 3 tours of Iraq, been wounded, one time causing the removal of part of his foot, he thought he was done and then they ship him to Afganistan. So now this government is sending maimed soilders back to combat. Talk about carrying out the agenda to weary the military. I would think if you had part of a foot taken you – your country would say your service would no longer be in a war zone! Honorable discharge or at the very least give him a administrative job till his tour is over.
Anyway here is the link to fox.com story on this
      http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/03/16/sources-identify-us-soldier-suspected-in-afghan-massacre/
Pray for him, for his family. I am sorry for the deaths he is aledged to have caused but I blame the insane policies of this administration.
Pray we really will get Obama and the godless progressives out of the white house this year. I do believe that the foundation for a turn around must not be about the economy only but putting the Almighty back in His rightful place in our lives. Because as the Word says except the Lord build the house they labor in vain. I pray this election is about bringing godliness back into every aspect of this government. The Founders understood that the United States of America’s Constitutional form of government was only suitable for a moral and godly people. I pray 2 Chron 7v14 that we cry out in earnest for His Will to be done in our lives.

I’d say you were right if this was an actual war…it is not. We have not fought a war since WWII. Everything since then has been a police action where our government has hired out our men & women as mercenaries.

Can you imagine if our troops had landed and hooked up with “good” German’s or “good” Japanese, sought their advice, included them in our military briefings and plans, let them tell us where we could fight/bomb/etc.

War is hell…for a reason. You land and kill everything in front of you until one side or the other screams “I surrender!”. It is this that makes it so horrible that most “civilized” peoples will avoid it all cost.

I tell you here and now, if you take the chains off of our dogs…this “war” would be over fast. But this nonsense of trying to find needles in haystacks while trying to protect those who are protecting those we are seeking…is a no win situation.

Declare war on Afghanistan and kill everything that moves…or pack up and leave them to themselves. Oh, but leave a big sign that says “Next time you don’t like the way your country is treating you…shoulder a weapon and do something about it. Don’t call us, we’ll call you.”

If I remember Vietnam service, the draftees did one tour for 8 months and came back home to the disrespectful public opinion. The wounded that made it home were discharged. This policy continued after the draft ended in 73 until the evacuation in May 75. Only career warriors who specifically volunteered for specific assignment served multiple tours.

Now one percent of our country has volunteered to serve, and they are routinely sent on multiple assignments and treated like a special class and honored with parades and song. But at the end of the day, it’s just our way of not feeling guilty for exploiting our greatest National treasure, the US military.

God bless us one and all.

I am a veteran of the United States Army and living with a Traumatic Brain Injury. I hope that they look closer into the issues that could have arisen with this soldier’s brain. If we hadn’t lost sight of Biblical Truths we would know that war is not supposed to be a picnic. Wars are supposed be brutal and annihilate the enemy down to the last piece of livestock for a reason. 1 to make it so final that those who would consider starting them (world Trade Center) would think more than twice and 2 so that those who are called to answer leave no quarter or doubt what the outcome would be to those who try.

The Israelites got into trouble for not wiping out the “innocents” We have the trouble we have today because of disobedience to God commands. And before you Biblical illiterates start – study first, then spew.

BUT we are not at war here – we do not have tribal leaders with allegiance to who knows what – and we have basic ground rules in our society based on Judeo Christian ethics. I’ll wait to see what facts come out. Any good Vince Flynn novel can come up with possible scenarios that might cover this – or he may have snapped. Too soon to judge.

Did anyone see the picture of the marines in Afghanistan listening to Secretary of Defense Panetta? Fox News showed it this morning. Most of them had their heads turned away or facing down in protest. Of the rest, there was an unmistakable look of disgust on most of their faces.

Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales obviously baled out for a while; lost his mind.
May he forgive himself ….live in peace…. and, live well.

Living war –is traumatic; PTSD. Obviously, Robert Bales lived it too long.
Soooooooooooooooooo many soldiers suffer AFTER they come home.

    >May those sent to their Maker rest in peace –as they never knew.

his entire family is in my state being held in protective custody because the reason they wouldnt release the name was for fear of retaliation from the muslims in the USA. His family is now in even greater danger including his young children, this disgusts me they did this. Just cannot even wait to start the slander. ofcourse he will be publicly crucified for this unlike the muslims who killed our servicemen over the koran burning. he snapped but the double standard and the media throwing his entire family to the wolves is beyond forgivness. I am praying for the safety of his entire family and I hope you all will join me in those prayers they need them.

Sometimes the US Army does the right thing. Protecting SSG Bales family is the right thing. Did it ever occur to anyone that the Army is also protecting Bales? Sometimes the Army does look after it’s own.

Agree. The rampant anti-military feeling of the Far Left ” General Be-Tray-Us ” Obama Crowd simmers under their PC phony surface. This is the same hippie , angry , anti – America crowd of the 60′s. They have just cleaned themselves up a bit, gotten their law degrees by various means, and are now infesting our legislature armed with their angry, “social justice” political philosophies. They hated Bush. They hated the military. They hate America . They are in a punish mode. Wonder if the clueless, naive Democrats who enabled their wave into the White House have awakened to this fact or if they did actually share this intense anti-American feeling. ?
