Afghan Prez Condemns This Video of Alleged Marines Peeing on Dead Taliban Fighters

WASHINGTON (AP) — Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Thursday condemned a video depicting what appears to be four U.S. Marines urinating on the corpses of Taliban fighters.
A presidential statement described the act as “completely inhumane” and called on the U.S. military to punish the Marines.
The Marine Corps said Wednesday it is investigating the YouTube video but has not yet verified its origin or authenticity. The case has being referred to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, the Navy’s worldwide law enforcement organization.
The Afghan Ministry of Defense also condemned the actions in the video, which it described as “shocking.”
The NATO-led security force in Afghanistan released a statement Thursday saying, “This disrespectful act is inexplicable and not in keeping with the high moral standards we expect of coalition forces.”
The International Security Assistance Force said the actions “appear to have been conducted by a small group of U.S. individuals, who apparently are no longer serving in Afghanistan.” The statement did not identify the personnel or explain why the ISAF thought they had left the country.
Sen. John McCain, a Navy veteran who fought in the Vietnam war, said the incident “makes me so sad.”
McCain, the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, called the Marine Corps one of America’s strongest institutions and said its image has apparently been tarnished by “a handful of obviously undisciplined people.”
Appearing Thursday on “CBS This Morning,” the Arizona Republican said, “There should be an investigation and these young people should be punished.”
On Wednesday, the Council on Islamic-American Relations, a prominent Muslim civil rights and advocacy group based in Washington, protested the video in a letter faxed to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.
“We condemn this apparent desecration of the dead as a violation of our nation’s military regulations and of international laws of war prohibiting such disgusting and immoral actions,” the group wrote.
“If verified as authentic, the video shows behavior that is totally unbecoming of American military personnel and that could ultimately endanger other soldiers and civilians,” the letter said.
Marine Corps headquarters at the Pentagon said: “The actions portrayed are not consistent with our core values and are not indicative of the character of the Marines in our Corps. This matter will be fully investigated.”
A Marine Corps spokesman, Lt. Col. Stewart Upton, added, “Allegations of Marines not doing the right thing in regard to dead Taliban insurgents are very serious and, if proven, represent a failure to adhere to the high standards expected of American military personnel.”
A Pentagon spokesman, Navy Capt. John Kirby, said the video is deeply troubling.
“Whoever it is, and whatever the circumstances – which we know is under investigation – it is egregious behavior,” Kirby said.
It is unclear who shot the video and who posted it online.

These soldiers lack basic self-discipline and integrity. This is the sort of stuff that will cause the public to remove their support of a war, even if we haven’t completed our mission-and rightly so. There is a huge difference between a righteous warrior and a savage; let‘s make sure our conduct in this war or any other conflict is beyond reproach so that America retains it’s sterling reputation.

Personally I don’t have an issue with it. My only wish is these young men come home safe and sound. As a leader, you teach soldiers that you never do anything in combat that you have not done in training (even if you are LTC Alan West). In 24 years of military service and all manner of training, I never was given the five step process for urinating on dead enemy soldiers, thus I may not want to do it in combat. In fact, in training when we would practice POW search, we were always instructed to treat dead people with the same respect we want out own dead treated with, being the enemy may bring the fight a little harder when you start doing “bad stuff”.
These young marines were lacking leadership and supervision. Now they will pay a steep price when they are recognized (and they will be recognized).

If we become like them, then how can we say claim any higher moral standard? I’m a veteran, and I have many in my family who have also served and continue to, and this action of these few… marines; brings shame to their uniform and upon all of us whome they represent. I say if they have no honour, which is what they have demonstrated, then strip them of their uniforms and let them no longer be a disgrace to it!

WHile it may amuse you, it does not further the cause, or help in the objectives we are trying to accomplish in Afghanistan. While you may not agree with the strategy in Afghanistan, we are not over there in a mission to destroy the nation. We are doing nation building and counter insurgency. You do not win the hearts and minds of the people by urinating on the dead. You out do the enemy, by keeping the people safe, providing security, stability, roads, schools, hospitals…… Once again, you may not agree with the strategy, but the actions of these marines does not help the marines or the other armed forces in Afghanistan. The enemy uses this as anti American propeganda within their ignorant masses, and it helps recruit more taliban, who in turn, kill more Americans.
I am an extreem far right conservative who hates the lie of Islam, hates abortion, abhores homosexuality, despises socialism,communism/marxism. I have numerous deployments to both Iraq and Afghanistan.
These young marines are just that, they are young, and they lacked supervision and leadership. Their small action will result in a big reaction, and folks in their chain of command will burn.

I also agree with you completely. For me, that was sad to watch. There was no honor in it. Yes, I understand the comments by others that have been in combat, but I think we may be looking at these situations too microscopically. Zoom out from this situation, and look at our world as a whole. Aren’t we really seeing in the world the war between GOOD and EVIL?
Shouldn’t we as individuals always strive to be on the side of the good, moral, and honorable no matter what the situation? The men are not wrong for obeying orders in a foreign war where it’s shoot or be shot. But, this degradation goes far beyond that. I would like to think now, especially that we have the NDAA law, that if a soldier showed up at my door or yours, with orders to shoot, steal from or kidnap an innocent person, he would have some morality. I would hope he had a conscience and walk away, having a sense of right and wrong. If we believe in the sanctity of human life, then that goes for all people. These Taliban are dead, they didn’t get the insult (shame), but instead it fell on these four soldiers. Doesn’t acting like a beast (even if someone else does) make us a beast? All men who fight in wars, no matter which sides have beliefs, wives and children, who suffer. Many of us believe one day we will stand before a Righteous God and have to account for our individual actions.

I am far more outraged at the disdain Michelle Obama showed for our flag at the 9/11 anniversary ceremony. There was no absolutely NO justification her unpatriotic reaction during an almost sacred occasion for AMERICANS (or do we matter less than the Taliban?).
Our men in uniform honor the American flag. They die for our country. These marines behaved improperly and should be reprimanded, but if we punish them unduly it will come across as a sign of weakness and appeasement to the Taliban–al-Qaeda, and that WILL fuel their killer instinct. They cry bloody murder in front of the media, but secretly these savages find our mortification over this incident laughable. Honestly, they think we are stupid.

I doubt that my message will have much affect on you or your opinion of this unfortunate event. However I feel I must say something.
Many in D.C. are going a little nuts over the picture showing the Marines urinating on the Taliban insurgents who were trying to kill them minutes before.
I feel pretty strongly that they exercised very poor judgment in letting themselves be filmed doing this, and for that they should all loose a weekend pass, or have to peel potatoes in the mess hall for a week.
But that is about it.
Looking at that story, the only thing running through my mind are images of our dead being drug naked thought the street, images of Daniel Pearl having his head hacked off, seeing thousands of them chanting “Death to America” while stomping on our flag in the streets. All while we continue to stupidly send their governments foreign aid by the billions of dollars.
As long as they seek to kill us, which is what they say over and over again, I say, excuse my language, PISS ON ALL OF THEM!

Who are we to judge them after they have risked their lives for our country. How does anyone know how they would behave under these conditions. War is hell and these men understand what hell is. Unless we walk in their shoes we can not comprehend what it is like. Maybe it was somewhat disrespectful but I imagine its difficult to have respect for someone that is trying to kill you. These guys know first hand what happens to the bodies of our troops at the hands of their enemies. To take away their rank or give them prison time or a dishonorable discharge is not acceptable. I’m more offended by abuses resulting in the deaths of civilians and our own forces than disrespect showered (literally, in this case) on dead enemies.
These soldiers don’t have much class, but we pay them to get the job done well, not to be classy. On the other hand, we pay our politicians to look classy and they never seem to get anything done well. I’ll take a wizzing soldier over a political whiz of a Congresscritter anyday.

If the USMC doesn’t view their actions as dishonorable, I retract my comments. I guess the “The Few. The Proud.“ ”The Brave” thing has lower standards than I had thought.
While this is a low level incident, I believe that videoing this act was extremely stupid. In essence, these Marines made a propaganda video for the Taliban. I think that is dishonorable. Again, if the USMC doesn’t consider this dishonorable, who am I to judge.
In my war, worse things happened.

It’s no secret that we are on the path to conflict with Iran – yet another war in the ME – and this video could be used to inflame the barbarians in Afghanistan as well as Pakistan (not that they need much to get their blood lust going). The consequences are likely unpredictable, but could be used to ratchet up the tension until conflict is achieved.

The justice system and justice itself are not comparison based. They are based upon what is generally accepted as right and wrong or legal and illegal. By my standards and the UCMJ, what these Marines did was illegal and wrong. It doesn’t matter what someone else did at any other time, they broke the law and they should and will pay for it.
