Afghan Woman’s Choice: 12 Years in Prison or Marry Rapist and Face Death

An unspeakable atrocity, an unthinkable choice.
It is difficult to imagine what it feels like to be Gulnaz. She was only 19-years-old when she was raped and impregnated by her cousin’s husband in Afghanistan. If that were not bad enough, Gulnaz, along with her baby, are serving a 12-year prison sentence for her “crime” — the crime of being raped — or, as the authorities put it: dishonoring her family by having sexual intercourse out of wedlock.
“He had filthy clothes on as he does metal and construction work. When my mother went out, he came into my house and he closed doors and windows. I started screaming, but he shut me up by putting his hands on my mouth,” Gulnaz said of her rapist.
Now, the only hope for Gulnaz if she wishes to escape prison is to marry her rapist. The move would purportedly restore her honor. An unattractive choice made all the more fruitless by the fact that, if freed, Gulnaz could still face an honor killing by either her rapist’s family, or her own.
“I was asked if I wanted to start a new life by getting released, by marrying this man,” she told CNN in an interview. “My answer was that one man dishonored me, and I want to stay with that man.”
“My daughter is a little innocent child. Who knew I would have a child in this way. A lot of people told me that after your daughter’s born give it to someone else, but my aunt told me to keep her as proof of my innocence.”
One glimmer of hope may be that Gulnaz‘s plight has drawn international attention because of a dispute between the European Union and a team of documentarians who were producing a film on women’s rights in Afghanistan.
CNN explains:
The documentary makers filmed a lengthy report on Gulnaz and other women, showing her talking openly about her fate. They showed the film to the EU, who were paying for it as part of a project on female rights here. After viewing it, the EU decided to spike the project.
The EU said it was concerned about the safety of the women in the film: they could be identified and might face reprisals. The filmmakers however suspect — citing an email leaked from the EU delegation — that the EU might also be motivated by its sensitive relationship with Afghan justice institutions, since he film shows the Afghan justice system in a very unflattering light.
The leaked email says: “The delegation also has to consider its relations with [Afghan] Justice institutions in connection with the other work that it is doing in the sector.”
The EU Ambassador to Afghanistan, Vygaudas Usackas, denied political motivations were at play in asking the film not to be shown.
“What I am concerned about is that situation of the women. About the security and well being, that’s of paramount importance, the key criteria according to which I, as representative of the European Union will judge,” said Usackas.
Meanwhile, a desperate Gulnaz is poised to marry her rapist in the hopes she can continue to rear her child.

Posted on November 22, 2011 at 8:07pmYesterday, I attended the celebration of life of PFC Cody Norris. He was killed by enemy fire in Kandahar Province, Afgahnistan November 9th. I had the blessing to know Cody and his West Point cadet brother Michael and their parents for many years. I watched them both grow into men of very high character. I do not mean to downgrade Cody’s sacrifice for our freedoms, but I certainly question why we are sacrificing so many young men to support a government that allows conditions as described in this story.
The U.S. and NATO have been trying to drag this country into the 18th century for the better part of a decade and we still hear about occurences like this. These people would rather be throwing rocks at each other and eating raw meat than acknowledge that there are different ways to do things today. There are few things that I agree with the current administration and getting our broke asses out of Afgahnistan is one of those things. We have spent billions of dollars trying to change this country and the Iraqi’s. We have only had slight success in Iraq.
Let’s remember that we have young men who continue to make the ultimate sacrifice as long as we are there. The people to occupy(hey that’s on purpose) the Middle East have killed each other for as long as history has been kept and will continue no matter what we do.

It is long past the time to bring our soldiers home from the hellhole of Afganistan. These people have been and will always be what they have been since their beginning. 1) Become independent of all oil imports from any Islamic country.
2) Pull out all troops from the Middle east and other Islamic regions.
3) Let the rotten mohammadens get back to killing each other, they will have no time or resources to mess with us anymore.
4) Allow Israel to protect themselves and attack Islamicists when provoked.
I to have close relatives who have sacrificed dearly for those rotten places. Yes, I am sorry for their horrible conditions and lack of civilization, that however is the result of islam, it’s as simple as that. Short of forced Christian conversion (which I do not favor), there is no hope for them.

My son is on his 3rd deployment and I pray he comes home safe. Every day my son give orders to young men and women like PFC Harris knowing he is potentially sending them to their death. I don’t want another American to die or become maimed to nation build a country whose religious cult places them in 7th century. As far as I am concerned, the day the SEALS killed Bin Laden was the day the mission was accomplished. We got our retribution for 9/11.

I’ve yet to have ANY muslim explain this to me in an intelligent, logical, and cogent way.
