Afghan Women Defy Taliban by Playing Soccer

When the Taliban was in power, no woman was allowed to play sports and female prisoners were publicly executed at Kabul’s soccer stadium.
So having women take to the field is seen as a direct challenge to the militants. They practice every other day, but rarely play matches in Afghanistan.
There is no Afghan soccer league here. The women often play each other for fun, but the game can come with danger because some of the players face death threats.
Khatol Shahzad Amarkhel quit for three months because of the Taliban.
“Someone called my home number,” she says. “He promised to kill me if I continued to play. I changed my number, but I am still scared.”

Posted on November 29, 2010 at 1:30amWalkWithMe1966: Like we have friends in the middle east now? The only ones we might be able to rely on are the Israelis. The others (and perhaps them too) will act like our friends as long as they think they can get us to do their dirty work – then they’d scream for holy war the minute they were through with us.
And, its not just the middle east – most of the world is ready to blame us for something or another while holding out their hands for financial aid at the same time.
Obama is fueling this fire by apologizing for the United States everywhere he goes.
I hope he apologized to the world for us helping to end WWII, feeding their hungry and helping to fight diseases like AIDS and sleeping sickness.
In fact, we should also apologize for trying to spread democracy. We shoudl pull all of our troops home ad let them fight their own battles.

Posted on November 29, 2010 at 12:01amThis is what makes me sick. The Left leaning women in this country do not support our efforts to help but I don’t hear one of them saying anything about the mistreatment of women in the Muslim faith. Behar? Whoopi? Any other assorted pinhead? Anyone from Hollywood? Anyone Buehler? Snowleopard you hang in there don’t let anyone push you around.

Posted on November 28, 2010 at 11:04pmThey don’t want these girls to get a education then they would know they should look for more in a husband than a bearded guy who smokes dope and lays around with young men , walks with them holding hands and thinks it’s ok to rape men if you are torturing them but if they enjoy it they are supposed to kill them.

Posted on November 28, 2010 at 10:48pmI’m glad to see these women standing up to the Taliban. We need to pray that it doesn’t cost them something valuable, like a limb, or worse.
God bless them.

Actually if you have lived other places in the world as I have, you have a love for all that this country stands for. We take our freedom and way of life for granted. Posted on November 29, 2010 at 6:42amI’ve lived in other countries, 33 to be exact. Not showing off here, just stating a fact. What I observed was these people don’t want the change nor the help that was offered, provided to them to better themselves via the Peace Corps, our military or religious organizations. Why, because when they realized they would have to get up everyday and work to keep ‘it’ going they didn’t want anything to do with it. Once the ‘help’ stepped aside to pass the reigns to the rightful owner, owner said, “No, thanks, it’s too much like work.” They prefer the ‘nanny’ state, the ‘hand outs’. Sad but true.

Posted on November 28, 2010 at 9:01pmYou know, the United States makes me sick! It should be obvious to our salamander in chief that you don’t remove a roach infestation by chasing down each roach in an infested apartment building and killing it.
You feed the bastards so they will congregate in one area and you kill them all.
Why don’t we have the common sense of an aboriginal hunter and leave Afghanistan to the Taliban (even defending them from unprovoked attacks if need be) and then, when they inevitably export their terror to us or an ally, nuke the whole colony?
This crap of a “war” is only killing our soldiers and innocent civilians in Afghanistan.
Give these bastards a place to congregate…then stomp them all out together.
