Afghanistan Ambassador: Withdrawing Prematurely Could Lead to ‘Another 9/11′

Ryan Crocker, the U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan, said that Sunday’s attacks on Western embassies in Afghanistan only confirm that the U.S. must finish its mission in the country, and not withdraw early.
(Related: Taliban Claims Responsibility as Coordinated Explosions Rip Through Capital)
Despite American aversion to the war, he maintains that the risks of early departure are unacceptable and could even mean “another 9/11.”
“Attacks like this demonstrate why we need to be here,” he said on CNN’s State of the Union.
“To get out before the Afghans have a full grip on security, which is a couple of years out, would be to invite the Taliban and Al Qaeda back in and set the stage for another 9/11. And that, I think, is an unacceptable risk for any American.”
However, Crocker praised the progress of the Afghan security forces, saying they already “pretty much have the situation under control.”
“We’ve seen a very professional performance by Afghan security forces. They are able to deal with events like this on their own — a clear sign of progress.”
The Taliban claim that it will soon launch an “assault” of even larger attacks, but Crocker said the Taliban is good at “issuing statements,” but not as good at fighting.
“Frankly, I don‘t think the Taliban’s good enough” to carry out such a widespread assault, at this point, he said.

Posted on April 16, 2012 at 2:50amWe can’t seem to get out of wars that we never should have gotten into in the first place. They go on and on and on and on and… If we wanted to win, we could. We could crush that backwards country tomorrow. For some reason they want to let our men and women stay over there and get killed. We keep getting into one war after another. I say, send our elected officials over there and put them in harms way. It is way to easy to sign a piece of paper when it‘s not your blood that it’s written in. Don’t get me wrong. I am as patriotic as the next guy. I would be willing stand up and defend my God, my family, and my country if the cause was a just one. Sometimes war is necessary. I get it. And I fully support the US military. I think they are absolutely amazing. I am so thankful for all they do. But something has to be done to cease this endless cycle of madness. War is being used as a political tool of both parties. They sell the propaganda and sucker us into buying it. I, for one, am sick of it. I don’t care how the election turns out. I’m writing in Ron Paul.

Posted on April 16, 2012 at 4:55amIf you Ron Pauler’s would stop acting like political two year old you might get more support. If Obama wins what have you accomplished? I too feel a different approach should be used. But rather than allow the killers of 3000 of our innocent civilians to be slaughtered by peaceful Muslims and no action taken, if there is ever another attack the vicious tribal area it emanated from should be made into a sheet of glass sheet with a few well placed neutron bombs and no lose of our service men’s lives. I thinks it would be more more cost efficient too. Ever wonder why these large scale terrorist attacks never happen to China?

Posted on April 16, 2012 at 5:34am@ OriginalThought What do you mean if us Ron Paul supporters would stop acting like 2 year olds? You should support Ron Paul because you love your country. Don’t you get it? To a RP supporter, there is no difference between Obama or Romney. The horse said it himself. “The only thing Republican about me is that’s how I registered” Ron Paul would have more supporters if neocons like the person who owns this site would quit lying about Pauls chance of winning. Truth is, Paul is the only one who can beat Obama. Romney is another puppet for the special interests and political elite. They all want us to be slaves, and rid us of what it really means to be free. And believe this, we’re on the brink of truly losing that feeling. So I’ll 2nd what the poster above you said, and add a little more truth to it, “Vote military industrial complex. Vote big bankers. Vote big government. Vote more of the same. Vote Mitt Romney! Vote Obama!”

There is no way Mitt has any chance in hell convincing, not only the RP supporters, but the independents, and moderate liberals to get excited about him being in the white house. By choosing the establishment, you are aiding in the destruction of this country. How can you, and other neocons be so damn blind and accepting to the myth that republicans and democrats are offering you a choice? Our monetary and foreign policies don’t change from president to president. And this country just gets worse and worse. I will not be a part of putting a liberal in office. Do you think that should someone wave a magic wand and miracle him into the presidency he would have any ability to fix that? And if that’s all that gets done, well then that’s a great start in the right direction. It will save us a bunch of money too. How do I suppose he will get elected? Well, he offers something to everyone. Mitt only offers up the thought of goods to the establishment backed right. Obama only offers up the thoughts of good to the establishment left. And Paul has something for everyone. That‘s how I know he’s going to be elected. I’m not 100% sure whos polls you’ve been reading, but I’m sure they are wrong. He has a great deal of support. Fox News did a piece called “Wheres Ron Paul?” On that same day, he spoke to almost 9,000 people in California. He has a lot more support than the lame stream media would like anyone to believe.

Sitting back and waiting for them to attack is suicide because make no mistake they will attack. Financially he is right on. The other reason I couldn’t bring my self to support the guy is because of hateful people like you running around calling everyone neo-con’s and cussing at people. Hell all the terrorists have been able to muster up is a couple of failed attempts with sticking crap in their underwear and their shoes. Come on…. Study the history of Iran. They have no desire to destroy their country. They haven’t invaded anyone in over 200 years. They are self preservationists. Are you really scared of a govt who knows it would be stupid to attack the US or any of our allies? Come on buddy. Please stop watching Fox News and Glenn Beck. This is about saving our country, not about who or what looks good by association. Just remember Mitts own words “The only thing republican about me is thats how I registered” (im paraphrasing there) Come on guy. You are being lead by the carrot of fear. Please wake up.

For your information I didn’t vote for Romney in the primary but I sure would take him over the jack weed that is in office now. Just like if for some reason Ron Paul got the nomination I would would vote for him in the general election over Obama even with Ron‘s foreign policy that I don’t agree with. I would vote for an orange over Obama if the orange was on the ballot legitimately. You go ahead and stick your head in the sand and believe that Iran can’t touch you, I could careless. Posted on April 16, 2012 at 1:44amThe Afghan government recently calculated that their security forces will be broke two or three years after the allied forces leave. This means that the Taliban will quickly take over and their retribution will be savage. The present government will be dead or in exile. It’s not surprising then, that Karzai and his ministers have woken up with a jolt.
Time to change the rules, I would say. They must start behaving in a civilised and sensible manner, providing full support to the allies, or it’s over. (Also, a bit of gratitude for the lives lost, injuries incurred, and treasure spent, might be nice.)
As tempting as it might be to let them drown in their own cesspool, legions of innocents will be brutalised and massacred. Children will be raised in hatred, if they survive at all, and one day the allies will have to go through the whole traumatic process again. And this time against an enemy better prepared and more determined.
Give the government some tough love and, if they refuse to respond appropriately, then walk away.

And then, according to the CDC, EVERY YEAR (NOT every decade):
Heart disease: 599,413
Cancer: 567,628
Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 137,353
Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 128,842

Got it that the media revs us up on these things. But consider: if attacked, how on earth would we ever defend ourselves with the ***** attitude of non-sacrifice that we have adopted?

Posted on April 16, 2012 at 1:31amI agree, and though I’d be the first to say it is not the soldiers right to question where they are sent to defend America, Vietnam and all other deployments since, have been police actions and not war. With no clear cut enemy to fight & defend against in these battles –and the fear of harming a non-combative– we have tied our military’s hands and asked them to die for no reason and no way to adequately defend themselves.
But I get your point:
Americans killed in Vietnam = approx. 60,000
Vietnamese killed in Vietnam = approx. 600,000
A more startling fact?
Percent of Vietnamese killed in the Vietname war = approx. 10% of their population …and they were prepared to fught another 10 years if need be under the same conditions.
In todays numbers this would = 30 MILLION US lives lost if we held our resolve as they did.
The biggest unknown factor? Would we be as resolved as the Vietnamese were if the battles took place on our own soil?
I am not referring to a quick bio/chem/nuke attack…but 10+ years of conventional war in our own cities and streets. Would our people stand with arms and the resolve to repel the invaders?
In this day and age, I think LONG before we ever approached the 1 million mark, the “people” would be screaming at the government “Give them what they want! Whatever it takes as long as my barcolounger, big screen TV, SUV and the McDonalds on the corner are spared…give them what they want!”

Posted on April 16, 2012 at 2:04amIt is not commonly realised that the western allies (you weren’t alone over there) actually won the Vietnam war and then surrendered.
Viet Cong generals have admitted that Tet was their last ditch attempt, as they had run out of resources. The Tet offensive was fairly easily repelled and the VC chased off. Unfortunately, cameras beamed the fight into civilian homes and it looked like the VC had invaded Saigon and won.
Much to the surprise of the VC generals, after they had been defeated, their enemy fled the battlefield.
Sun Tzu would have been proud.

Where are you going to get the money from in order to continue this “long fight”?:
“Bin Laden: Goal is to bankrupt U.S.
November 01, 2004
He said the mujahedeen fighters did the same thing to the Soviet Union in Afghanistan in the 1980s, “using guerrilla warfare and the war of attrition to fight tyrannical superpowers.”
“We, alongside the mujahedeen, bled Russia for 10 years until it went bankrupt and was forced to withdraw in defeat,” bin Laden said.
He also said al Qaeda has found it “easy for us to provoke and bait this administration.”
“All that we have to do is to send two mujahedeen to the furthest point east to raise a piece of cloth on which is written al Qaeda, in order to make generals race there to cause America to suffer human, economic and political losses without their achieving anything of note other than some benefits for their private corporations,” bin Laden said.”

Just look at the loss of freedom and the amount of survelliance the sheeple are asking for just so that the government will keep them safe. The only problem is, who will keep them safe from their government.
The war in Iraq and Afghanistan have done nothing to stop those who hate us from hating us. In fact, they have probably added to the hate against us.

Posted on April 15, 2012 at 11:09pmthe wars are wasteful and should come to an end, but I could not care less who hates us. Screw them.
Report Post »We should not pull out of anything to appease anyone on earth. If they hate us, well we should hate them back, but harder, and meaner.
But that’s just me.

Posted on April 15, 2012 at 10:47pmI feel for the guy, but there is no “win” for us there. In the end, we will have accomplished no more than the Soviets did back in the 70s and 80s. That land will not be governed as we know government.

Posted on April 15, 2012 at 11:00pmActually, we accomplished what we needed to a long time ago. We came to Afghanistan to kill our enemies the Taliban. We did that and should have left then. Instead we want to Nation build, and our rookie president has let the Taliban take hold again. We accomplished much more the USSR ever did. With relatively few casualties I might add.

Posted on April 15, 2012 at 11:12pmNo, we clearly didn’t kill the Taliban because they are back and were always waiting. Remember that the Afghan war under Bush was 7 years and only less than 4 with Obama. I’m not saying one is worse, all I‘m saying is that we’ve won nothing. The Taliban was never defeated.

Posted on April 15, 2012 at 11:49pmIf you mean irradiated, no they were not all killed, but they did not have operation bases in Afg. now they sit in our own bases recently left behind by Obama. When Bush left office the they were pushed back to the Pakistan and Iranian borders. We were killing them there until Obama decided to start withdrawing, and using drones to kill leadership was his only tool. If we had stayed in force as Bush advised, we would not have seen Sundays attacks.
Report Post »I think we should pull out now that we are in a no win situation, but in doing so tell the Afg. government that if we have to come back it will be with tactical nukes.

Posted on April 15, 2012 at 10:39pmThese radical islamists are already planning another 9/11, we don’t have to withdraw our troops from AFG to experience that. Sorry, don’t trust a word they say. It’s a bunch of bloviating once again.

Posted on April 15, 2012 at 10:36pmAgree … we are being destroyed from within more than 9/11 ever did .. people losing their jobs and homes .. I wonder what the death count on that is .. we have had a lot of obits in our local paper that say died “unexpectedly” .. I would like to know the suicide rate under Obama.

Posted on April 15, 2012 at 10:49pmOk, I understand the point your making, government has gotten way out of control, our liberties are being threatened, and people have lost their jobs and their homes just like we almost did. But I’m a bit annoyed with your rhetoric that this is somehow worse than the tragedy of 9/11. How is losing a job or house comparable to 3,000 Americans dead and a symbol of America decimated? I seriously doubt we’ve had over 3,000 suicides in the past 3 years because the economy sucks.
Look I’m on your side here, but lets not be extreme with the language.

Report Post »I think what he was saying is that the threat of losing the Republic is worse than 9-11, If we see another 4 years of this administration we risk losing the Republic as you grew up in it. Your children will never see the freedoms you enjoyed. The propaganda is the tool they use, and to the uneducated voter it is very dangerous.

Posted on April 15, 2012 at 11:14pm“Though experts say we may not know for years how much the rate has increased, calls to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline increased by 36 percent in 2008, and another 15 percent in 2009.
Data compiled by The Wall Street Journal in late 2009 showed increases in several states. Of the 19 states surveyed, 13 had seen marginal increases in the suicide rate. Tennessee had the highest rate of increase, with over 15 percent more suicides in 2008 than 2007. Across the 19 states, the average increase was 2.3 percent.
This trend was also seen during the Great Depression, when the suicide rate increased by 21 percent in the early 1930s (about 17 of every 100,000 people).”
I think the destruction Obama has done since taking office INCLUDING the debt that our children and grandchildren will be paying for .. has done MUCH more damage than 9/11

Posted on April 15, 2012 at 11:17pmFor the second year in a row, middle-aged adults have registered the highest suicide rate in the country, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Historically, the eldest segment of the population, those 80 and older, have had the highest rates of suicide in the United States. Starting in 2006, however, the suicide rate among men and women between the ages of 45 and 54 was the highest of any age group. ”
“Ninety percent of people who kill themselves have a mental disorder at the time of their death,” which can be aggravated by drug and alcohol abuse, Dr. Clayton said. Problems related to health, jobs, relationships and finances have also been shown to be important risk factors for suicide, the C.D.C. reported. ”
“Men are more than three times as likely to commit suicide as women, and they tend to use guns. American Indians, Alaska Natives and non-Hispanic whites are also at greater risk. Veterans are also vulnerable. ”

Posted on April 15, 2012 at 11:27pmUnemployed persons and veterans are at higher risk. Unemployed persons are four times more likely to report symptoms of mental illness. Male veterans are twice as likely to die by suicide than civilians.
from 2010
One suicide occurs every 15 minutes; almost 100 suicides a day.
More than a million people attempt to take their own lives each year.
You do the math 365 X 100 = 36,500
Now should we look into the rates for divorce, child abuse, etc? … I wonder if those are up also?
