AFL-CIO Boss: Raising Taxes is ‘Best Way’ to Create Jobs

What should we do to get America’s economy back on the road to prosperity? Raise taxes, AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka suggests.

AFL CIO Boss: Raising Taxes is Best Way to Create Jobs

AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka, right, with WH chief of staff Bill Daley and President Barack Obama (AP)

“We need a dedicated source of revenue to create infrastructure in this country,” Trumka recently told Yahoo! Finance.

“We need to create jobs. The best way to do that is through infrastructure development.” Simply maintaining the existing infrastructure in this country will cost $2.2 trillion over five years, according to the American Society of Civil Engineers. That doesn‘t include Obama’s objective of high-speed rails and green energy projects.

Trumka didn’t say specifically how much he would raise the gas tax, but mentioned he’s shown the President a $256 billion plan to improve infrastructure. If every billion spent on infrastructure creates 35,000 jobs, as he claims, this package would create close to 9 million jobs over the next five years.

The idea would also improve America’s fiscal and competitive future, says Trumka. “There’s also a downstream effect, you put people back to work, they pay taxes, they don’t use services, they’re contributing, other jobs are created along the way as well,” he explains.

The White House isn’t on-board with the plan. Addressing the issue on “Face the Nation” in January, White House Chief of Staff Richard Daley said he isn’t in favor of raising taxes right now.

Trumka does have an unlikely supporter for higher gas taxes in the right-leaning Chamber of Commerce. However, the Chamber of Commerce does not support Trumka’s other tax initiative: creating a financial transaction tax.

An idea raised by Democrats during the Dodd-Frank bill debate, the transaction tax would charge financial institutions a minimal fee (less than a penny) for each trade they make. Trumka says that could raise another $100 billion in revenue without taking money out of the pockets of the middle class.

Trumka knows how to run a business, he‘s getting rich off union member’s hard work. All the while he pretends as if he’s acting in the best interest of his county and his members. Gov. Walker is going to have to lay off 1,500 teachers in Wisconsin if the crybaby Democrats don’t come back to vote. Does Trumka care about those 1,500? Or the classrooms that will increase in size? Of course not and he knows Obama is going to hand them all an unemployment check for the next two years anyway.

I own a small buiness. We depend on lots of driving to do our job. So, let me get this straight, Mr. Trumpka- you raise my cost of doing business, raise the cost for all my customers to buy stuff from me so they reduce purchases, you put more onerous costs on our business via “obamacare”, and you think I’m going to hire more people? WITH WHAT???!!

The industry we work in is down 85% nationwide. Trumpka and his political walking disaster in chief he talks to every day are NUTS. And what IS this about the Chamber of Commerce wanting higher gas prices? Have they been taken over by communists too?

I’ll call you… what you got?

Then the unions tip the table over because they have nothing to cover their bets with and …

Trumka: “We need a dedicated source of revenue to create infrastructure in this country,”
To Trumka, infrastructure means high speed trains. More EMPTY, tax payer subsidized trains staffed with dues paying union members running on tracks installed and maintained by dues paying union members. How much does AMTRAK lose a year? How is that shortfall made up? Out of your pocket and mine. No thanks Trumka.

      We are being nudged:
      (1) Gas prices going up-up-up. (What do we do?)
      (2) People are moving closer to their jobs to keep from spending so much on gasoline. Result: Denser cities.
      (3) Government wants us to buy “cold energy” vehicles — hybrids/electric cars [lots of money to be made there]
      (4) With the electric cars, people will have to live within 40 miles of where they work or else their battery won’t get them home again. Result: Denser cities.
      (5) Government is pushing for fast rail. What is needed for fast rail to be profitable? Denser cities.

Only in America can the son of a Polish mine worker grow up to be the person helping to orchestrate the downfall of the country that made his life possible. To have parents who were able to escape to freedom only to have their son working to change the country into that from which they worked so hard to escape. I guess that is what happens when you get something for nothing, his parents did the hard work and are probably spinning in their graves.l

There are ZERO instances of an economy growing while taxes are being held high on business. Raising taxes during a slow economy has multiple data sets to prove it is counterproductive. These blockheads are only wanting this particular kind of spending because they have the greatest number of jobs in that arena.

      TIFOSA:

It’s almost never productive to get into these tit-for-tats, but it’s worth remembering that while marginal personal income tax rates rose under Clinton, at Rubin’s urging, the capital gains tax rate was reduced significantly. Nonetheless, I do think folks tend to generalize the benefits of tax cuts with respect to revenues and growth. Personally, I’d like to pay as few taxes as feasible, just enough to suppor tthe normal functions of government and ending transfer payments. But, in terms of economic theory, while the Laffer curve is real, it’s just that (a curve — not a straight line), and no one knows at any given time where the tax cutting benefits end (again, relative to revenue and loosly tied to growth). I’ll say this: The Fed’s loose money policies that have predominated for at least 15 years, and which accelerated in 1998/1999 have caused much havoc, often giving the appearance of growth, but really just perverting the risk signals and leading to bubble after bubble.

This is contrary to economic common sense. At what point in the history of any nation has broad-spectrum tax hikes ever successfully maintain a free Republic? This “infrastructure development” that Trumka speaks of is nothing more than a union-bolstering ruse.

The unions love tax increases because they are favored in government bids. Unions, in general, are businesses unto themselves and their survival is dependent upon an ever increasing base. (Hint: I just described a pyramid scheme.)

Obama has spent twice in 2 years that Bush did in 8 years, and we as a Nation considered that disgraceful. Miss Bush yet? Unions could be good for some purposes, but they have run it all in the ground demanding more & more things that are good for the Union and bad for the workers of America. Just look at the millions they give a favored candidate each year from the (illegal) money they collect from the sheeple. It’s not for the worker, it’s for the whim of the Unions. Watch out people that the Union isn’t spending your pension plan, like they used to do. Our government has done a good job of spending SS benefits so nothing is left until they raise taxes again to pay for it.

We are ripe for a huge expansion and lowering our debt would cause an expansion of private business and the federal workers could get a job in the private sector. Get rid of the IRS and go to a national sales tax that way every one contributes. No more free rides. By the way the guidelines have changed for organ transplants. Now age is considered. Thank you, SNOW, I will take a look. Gloomy here right now, but warm. 2 inside cats are watching the birdfeeder with tails flicking, if only…..I guess all these pundits and those attached to the hip of POTUS are on the same page, pounding out the same tired message, hoping to teach by rote those who are only used to learning by rote. This due to only teaching to standardized tests, over and over again. It is not a way to measure student’s progress, it is a way for teachers to teach to the test, and kids never learn to think for themselves (outside the box). I could go on but it would ruin my mood. Have a great day!
NZKIWI, you don’t know me but I wanted to tell you how sorry I am NZ had this awful tragedy. I am so happy to see that you are okay and my prayers go out to those who lost loved ones and those who were injured.

Speaking of taxes, I would love to see Trumpka’s tax filings for the past five years. It would be a real eye opener for all the members of the AFL-CIO to see how much this guy rakes in as income and how he is able to manipulate the tax codes in his favor. This is one of those “rich” people the progressives are always talking about taxing more to pay for all the entitlement programs. Wall Street bonuses are extreme at times, but what kind of bonuses do the leadership of the AFL-CIO get? That would be very interesting.

This guy reminds me constantly of one figure I had seen in the early 90s on c span late in the night; he proposed, with charts as well, how a 100% tax rate on everyone would bring in all the needed funds for future programs; he also suggested 100% confiscation of all goods and wealth for the usage by the federal government to build wealth…in short, he would take everything and allow nothing to be left save scorched earth.

The laughable part is his projections of wealth made went on and up for the next thirty years, even when one of his colleges showed that if everything is taken, nothing is left to be taken or taxed.

Do they not understand that raising taxes to pay for public work projects THAT ARE TEMPORARY is not the solution for how horrible our jobs market is in America?

We need manufacturing to return to America. You can’t do that by RAISING taxes. The only real way is for us to accept a lower standard of living and taking the cut. There’s just no other way. Once we can reduce the costs of manufacturing, they might return to America. Maybe.

You wanna know why some of the wealthiest people in the country want “so called” increase taxes on the rich, which would necessarily include them? Think of it this way. They are already mega-wealthy to an absurd level. Currently others that own businesses and what not can become quite wealthy. No they don’t begin to approach the level of the mega-wealthy, but they wield enough influence that those who are meg-wealthy have there influence and power bases diluted, and this is currently an ongoing assault which historically as been quite an exclusive club. Therefor if they (the mega-wealthy) push for an increased tax on the rich they can decrease others ability to accumulate wealth to a significant degree and therefore gradually erode their degree of influence to shape policy and maintain dominance over others. Look at it this way. I will use extreme numbers to illustrate my point. take a person who is worth 10 million and one worth 10 billion. Lets say both have their “progressive style” tax of 75% (just to illustrate the point, you can pick any percentage). The millionaire ends up with what ………2.5 million left over (nothing to sneeze at but significant loss of over all wealth and therefore influence. The billionaire ends up with 2.5 billion. Even though you may think the ratio dollar to dollar has stayed the same you need to evaluate it in light of other factors. The progressive tax scale favors and helps concentrate wealth (not in dollar value but in influential power by limiting others expendable income that is most certainly maintained by the mega-wealthy). It occurs because those who are trying to accumulate wealth at a significant tax rate will never be able to achieve the influence of expendable income that those who already possess significant wealth. Therefore the mega-wealthy (although I am sure some are true believers in social justice) can actually ensure financial dominance through this type of system. Theirs is a strategy of actually protecting their wealth and survival of their dominance. Of course someone who still has 2,5 million lives well, I think you can see that the billionaire actually increases their influence when taxed more heavily because their expendable income remains significantly higher compared to other more ordinary wealthy individuals. It also creates a more dependent population on the redistribution of those tax increases which then again plays right into their ability to influence and exert dominance over larger groups of people all under the “heart tugging strings” of caring for the poor. Who would oppose that?? This has been some of the discussions that have occurred among the Bilderdergs. Some of the most wealthy influential people on the planet. Don’t believe me do your own research on Bilderberg meeting minutes !!!!!!!! If you think for a second that the mega-wealthy of this country and the world have a truly benevolent heart for the poor and down trodden then you have to ask yourself how these people got to be some of the wealthiest in the world? They are not well intentioned. Of course they think they are but as CS Lewis has stated…………Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

At the average union salary of $100,000 per anum, we can guarantee each of the 35,000 union workers benefitting from this largess 73 years of employment! What a bargin! A really good example that the unions are working hard to raise thier levels in government……they want everyone to pay more taxes so some can keep their overpaid fat-asses in well paying labor union dues paying budget crashing positions. Then, when it catches up again, they can just keep raising taxes. The union members keep getting their raises to offset the tax increase, and the rest of the citizens will no longer be able to afford working in any position other than a union job. Simple greed of the union members is keeping them from seeing the true face of socialism. Dummies…..
