AFL-CIO Head Calls for “Popular Control Over Private Corporations”

More fundamental transformation.

That’s the message AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka took to a group of supporters gathered in New York City last week for a panel discussion — “Which Way for the Working Class? Elections 2010 and Beyond.” According to the AFL-CIO blog, Trumka joined other key allies on the left, including Working America Executive Director Karen Nussbaum, New York Times columnist Bob Herbert, Eric Alterman, journalist and senior fellow at the Center for American Progress and moderator Katrina vanden Heuvel, editor and publisher of The Nation.AFL CIO Head Calls for Popular Control Over Private Corporations

To a reported audience of about 400, Trumka warned supporters about Fox News and the tea party “extremists” delivering what he called a “a cynical, deeply dishonest and incoherent message—that big government is somehow to blame for the current crisis that the budget deficit will eat our children, and that illegal immigrants took all the good jobs.”

In response, Trumka stressed that the left needs to offer the public an alternative to “the failed agenda of greed and the voices of hate and division and violence.”

Building for the future, he said, “we need to fundamentally restructure our economy and re-establish popular control over the private corporations which have distorted our economy and hijacked our government. That’s a long-term job, but one we should start now.”

Trumka and his allies are gearing up for the election season and rallying their supporters.  Trumka’s AFL-CIO is just one of many liberal groups who are sponsoring the Oct. 2 “One Nation Working Together” march in Washington, D.C.

    Stop collusion of unions across multiple companies.
    Why should workers be allowed to organize across an entire industry but companies cannot?

    This is the reason that unions had the power to destroy American industry.
    It’s not just cheap labor overseas, it’s unreasonable union labor here in the US.

The world you want for the USA is the same kind of America that existed in Atlas Shrugged. Free Market principles low taxes, less regulation, would help the economy not your big government Keynesian economic theory, here is an idea, read The road to serfdom by F.A.Hayek, or Free to choose by Milton Friedman then if you still think big government is the way to go, Then you are truly a communist and by all means move to a communist country and take Obama and his cronies with you. If we admit that the recession ended 15 months ago, then there goes out the window Obama’s “I inherited a mess” argument, does it not? Okay, if the recession ended 15 months ago, then that’s it. We’ve come back. Whatever garbage Bush put us in, that’s over. ‘Cause the recession’s over. We’ve stopped this.

    So you can’t any longer say, “I inherited this mess” ’cause the mess is his. Anything since the recession is his mess. And we know that unemployment’s gone up since last June. We know that more people have lost their jobs, there’s no increased economic activity. Ah, it’s just little semantic play on words. But it does, as does most of what I do here, brilliantly illustrate the point. – El Rushbo

    Does this mean government take overs of companies targeted by the government and unions..(maybe the ones that have denied union access?) and give it to popular control ( unions?)

    WOW TRUMPKA YOUR SOCIALIST AGENDA AND GOALS … interesting that these people feel they no longer have to hide their goals, and shamefull of all Americans in these unions are supporting the demise of the companies that have fed their families for so long. Hey union members……do you guys actually think a socialist communist control of the variable companies you work in will have YOUR INTERESTS in mind once you give them the control? I argue not. First they are collapsing the entire financial sector, the only people in this country who don’t have a union, can be fired anytime, are the first to suffer when a recession hits, work 60+ hours a week minimum for wages that are scandalous compared to Union jobs and benefits, and now he wants to hijack America? Just because a top 1% in Finance made huge profits doesn’t mean that the rest is living in the Hampton, quite the contrary I might add. The capital is flowing out of US, the Financial sector is not competitive anymore, new projects will lack funding, and this guy needs to nationalize what ? How about you start working and working hard for those 60 dollars an hour jobs from which you get a very fat cut from the avarage worker on bridges, roads, tunnels, dams which are falling apart all over the country. Enough of these demagogues.

You can’t prevent the labor unions from engaging in political activity, violates free speech. Let guys like Trumka continue to out themselves as radicals, it will be their undoing. Pushing them back underground is what got us into this mess in the first place.
      I will say, I’d love to see point 1 enacted, my wife is a teacher (a good one before everyone starts) and has paid the union dues out of coercion. After Glenn ran the footage of the retiring General Council of NEA, she refused to pay the dues anymore, and let the chips fall where they may.
      Finally, on point 2, checking immigration status would be very interesting. I will point out however, the union will always blame they employer, because remember ‘we’re here to help the little guy’ (please note extreme sarcasm).

      By ““popular control” I assume he means union control (i.e. people like himself.) Someone at top always has to make a decision; he obviously doesn’t mean democratic control (which wouldn’t work anyway.)

      He doesn’t mean shareholder control does he? I am so confused, is everyone now a shareholder or does he want to do away with the stock market altogether as well?

      A better system would be to have workers be in charge of things & not shareholders & definitely not some idiot who just graduated with an MBA from business school. It’s not that people should have equal pay, but they should have equal say. A corporation is a public trust: you go back just a century, & governments were taking away corporate charters because corporations weren’t living up to the public interest. It’s a very recent idea that they ought to be accountable only to shareholders, or be totally unaccountable.

      Shareholders don’t know HOW to run a business. They know how to coerce profits for tomorrow. A scumbag trader on Wall Street doesn’t know how to run a business. That trader only knows the mechanics of forcing a business into posting profit for next quarter. The AFL-CIO head is correct on this issue. Everyone would be better off.

      On corporate charters being contingent on service of public interests in the nineteenth century, see for example, Gary D. Rowe, “Lochner Revisionism Revisited,” Law and Social Inquiry, Vol. 24, Winter 1999, AND ALSO Charles Sellers, The Market Revolution: Jacksonian America, 1815-1846, New York: Oxford University Press, 1991, especially pp. 44-55

      Nothing will change unless George Soros is dressed in prison orange and brought before the American people.

      Also: I looked up the definition of a “Progressive” see for your self from the “Center for American Progress” website

      @progressivesloveamerica

      “A better system would be to have workers be in charge of things & not shareholders & definitely not some idiot who just graduated with an MBA from business school”.
      1. To put the workers in charge, you would first have to “take” said company from shareholders. By take I mean steal! You would be fine with that, I’m sure.
      2. If the constitution was suspended and said company was stolen from its rightful owners, how long do you think the company would remain profitable? If you could give yourself raises, how long would this company last? It wouldn’t matter at this point because there would be no company, it would be part of the state. Who would have the power then?
      3. Shareholders do not run companies.

      “It’s not that people should have equal pay, but they should have equal say”.

      1. Of course people don’t deserve equal pay. Bill is a better worker than Bob. Bill’s merit affords him better pay and the door is still open for Bob to be an even better worker than Bill earning him more than Bill. That door is shut in the socialist model.
      2. No, No, NO, everyone should not have equal say! A CEO doesn’t take a vote on the factory floor on how much is sufficient operating capitol or whether they should all get a raise. That idea is fantasy land.

      “A corporation is a public trust: you go back just a century, & governments were taking away corporate charters because corporations weren’t living up to the public interest”.
      1. Yes, power hungry progressives wanted to take away charters when companies were “deemed” not in the public interest for the same reasons as today, POWER!

      “It’s a very recent idea that they ought to be accountable only to shareholders, or be totally unaccountable”.
      1. Shareholder accountability is not a new idea, it is the same now as then. Shareholders are the owners, they approve or vote on a board and the board appoints the corporate structure and they hire workers. All of which are accountable to government oversight.
      2. The real accountability is profit. No profit no company and no shareholders, no employees. Profit is the great equalizer or constant.
      “Shareholders don’t know HOW to run a business. They know how to coerce profits for tomorrow”.
      1. Some may or may not know how to run a business. That is not the role of a shareholder and they don’t “coerce” profits. They hopefully have put the right people on the board to bring them evil profits tomorrow. Yes, those evil profits that employ people and bring return on investment to those evil shareholders, aka. investors.

      As for the rest of your post, you don’t seem to know even a little about capitalism and less about progressives. No one would claim capitalism is perfect and without proper oversight it will perish. By proper oversight I mean the uptick rule and the Glass/Stegal act preventing insurance companies from being an investment bank as well. To risky. Without corrupt politicians, who would the corporate lobbyists have paid to turn their back on oversight. These no-brainer laws were repealed in the late 1990′s. The root of our shared problem is in Washington! You don’t throw out capitalism because its not being properly overseen. Power is what they seek. The proof is the fantasy world they promise. You have a right to jobs, health care, home, and internet. Workers collectively run your company and you’ll make more money! Just surrender the power to us! We will take care of you…..not.

      ‘an alternative to “the failed agenda of greed and the voices of hate and division and violence.”????
      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      And that is just what we plan to do on November 2, 2010!!!!!!!!!!!!!
      We have had quite enough hate, division and violence since January 20, 2009, especially the hate and racial division!!!!!!!!
      And his guy promoted himself as the ‘post-racial’ president. He is neither post-racial NOR a real president (as in Commander-in-Chief)!!!!!!!!!
