AFL-CIO President Says Beck, Limbaugh ‘Pushed Open the Door to Hate’ After 9/11

AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka released a statement Friday commemorating the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11 — and promptly turned it into a political opportunity to bash Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Karl Rove and other conservatives for opening “the door to hate” in the decade since the attacks:
Wealthy CEOs, anti-government extremist front groups and frothing talk show hosts—from the Rush Limbaughs and Glenn Becks to the Koch brothers, Karl Rove’s American Crossroads group, Americans for Prosperity, the Club for Growth, FreedomWorks and the American Legislative Exchange Council—also pushed open the door to hate.
Despite the unity Americans first felt in the wake of 9/11, that hate has led to “ill-thought wars,” the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and attacks on immigrants and members of the LGBT community, Trumka said. It is also responsible for a racist conspiracy against President Barack Obama:
We saw it in the racism that has found overt and covert expression since Barack Obama began his run for office—from outright declarations of people who said out loud they would never vote for a black man to the ridiculously persistent obsession with our president’s birth certificate. Regardless of his policies or priorities, President Obama is shadowed by the drumbeat of suspicion based on his “other”-ness. And those suspicions are fed and watered constantly by forces that were threatened by his message of “hope and change.”
Trumka, who attended Thursday‘s speech as the president’s guest, said workers have been “vilified” by the “extremist small government posse” that has turned them into “public enemy No. 1.” In state after state this year, politicians have gone after the “paychecks, benefits and basic rights“ of workers and sought to pit them against each other ”in a rabid campaign to shift government support to tax breaks for the wealthy and already profitable corporations.”

Recall that before the 2004 election, the AFL-CIO heavily criticized President George W. Bush for using images of firefighters from Sept. 11 in campaign ads, calling them “disgraceful” and saying they “smack of political opportunism.”
“I’m disappointed but not surprised that the President would try to trade on the heroism of those fire fighters in the September 11 attacks. The use of 9/11 images are hypocrisy at its worst,” Harold Schaitberger, president of the firefighters union, said in 2004.
But this time, it‘s Trumka outright using the firefighters’ heroism, linking their bravery of running into the burning World Trade Center to standing with teachers in Wisconsin:
That’s what sent 347 firefighters to their death at the Twin Towers 10 years ago. It’s also what sent firefighters to stand with teachers in Wisconsin even though Gov. Scott Walker had exempted them from his attack on public employees. It’s what moves employed people now to demand good jobs for the 26 million Americans who are looking for work. It’s what gives us the courage to take on a crumbling economy and the politicians preaching austerity and ignoring our jobs crisis—to take them on and say, “We are America. We are better than this. And we are one.”
In his conclusion, Trumka calls for union activism to honor the anniversary:
Brothers and sisters, friends, I hope you will join me in marking this solemn anniversary by committing to redouble your activism on behalf of America’s everyday working heroes. We will rise or fall together.

It is one thing to profess and put forth conservative views and pronouncements, it is another to openly disrespect the office of the President, VP, cabinet members, etc. His rhetoric certainly creates a tone the is inflammatory and it is sad that their is an audience for this type of approach. The attention he gets seems to have influenced members of Congress who want to get noticed. Would be nice if they would actually do something besides repeat misleading sound bites and baseless slogans. This is true on both sides of the isle.

The people in unions just want a good paying job, I know, my husband was in the carpenters union for 10 years. It is the union bosses like Trumka and the others that need to be dealt with. The picture of Obama speaks volums of where Obama is. He is just another Union boss except in the private sector. Trumka has even said how he talks to Obama or one of his men several times a week. Obama is behind the Unions because they helped get him elected. You don’t bite the hand that feeds you. Obama knows that to well. Obama lies when he says he is for the average American, he stands with those who can fill his pcket with money, and get him elected.

When the college got in trouble over cuts, they asked us if we would be willing to take a small cut, and they said it would be across the board–including everyone. Many of us rose and said of course. They pay us quite well. They couldn’t get the unions to agree, and had to scrap the idea. What followed was layoffs. I was most ashamed.

If Richard Trumka thinks he’s helping Obama get re-elected, think again. His rhetoric is reminiscent of Obama’s ex-pastor Jeremiah Wright. As far as to his racial accusations against the Tea Party and conservatives, the only ones making hateful racial comments are the Congressional Black Caucus and other black racists like, Furakan, Sharpton, Jackson, Young and other so called ” leaders of the black community.” Leaders lead. They don’t coerce, threaten or intimidate others that don’t agree with their ideology and policies. The second is the formation of The Tea Party and that people in this country are no longer sitting back and being silent. The Third is all that Happened in Wisconsin.That Walker and the Senate were willing to stand for what was right.Even after the Unions with all their destruction and bullying and the RECALL elections, the good people of Wisconsin with the help of the Tea Party were able to defeat the total control of the Unions.

Has anyone seen what the union workers have done in WA state yesterday? They are the hate mongers and if the union keeps up their trash talk the whole country will be rioting. Yesterday the longshoremen shut down the ports in WA and destroyed new grain silos they estimate 500 workers were involved and because law enforcement was out numbered, there were no arrests at this destructive riot. They are looking through security tapes to see if they can identify anyone. What kind of justice will the business owners or the good employees receive there??

In most states, teachers, fire fighters, police, cannot work if they are not members of the union. You’re telling them to quit their jobs and not be employable in their current field. When you’re talking trade unions, my husband is an IBEW electrician — highly trained with a license that takes the equivalent amount of training as a university master’s degree. Outside the union, he worked a few small residential jobs a year with no benefits. Inside the union, he works almost year around with benefits. I think trade unions are different here in Alaska (they aren’t actually affiliated with Lower 48 unions, in most cases, I know). The trade unions act as employment clearing houses that provide portable benefits for workers who change employers frequently and assist contractors with manning jobs quickly and efficiently with highly skilled workers. I‘ve worked for union contractors myself and most of them don’t resent the unions or feel that they’re damaging their profits. The two entities — union and contractor — work together to keep construction flowing here. My employers have said that the union actually helps, not hurts their bottom line.
OTOH, I am opposed to government workers being unionized because government has no bottom line, so the unions just get bigger and more powerful at the expense of the tax payers who don’t get to negotiat

One son was in Michigan and the other in Illinois. They were both TOLD to vote for Obama. My son in Michigan didn’t vote at all because he refused to vote for Obama. The other did because his job was threatened and he was told they would know if he didn’t. He is so sorry now. Neither would ever work a Union job again. If you are laid off, you are not allowed to work. The politics are disgraceful and cronism is rampant. They fight amongst themselves constantly. They are coming apart at the seems. Their punk boy Obama looked like a bafoon last night, asking for a third stimulus to kick start the economy and make jobs. They are getting at the end of thier rope. They do not want to eat crow and oust Oboma, but they do not want to keep supporting a loser, who they know does not have a chance against the likes of Gov Perry.
Laugh at them, give them facts, give them history, let them know reality. Since Obama got elected, the economy has tanked, we have less jobs, higher gas prices, our AAA rating dropped to AA, and the world is starting to view us like they did when old Jimmy Carter was in the white house.

Recent threats even scared my children who know why I attend the Tea Party Rallys, and why standing up for our rights is so important. However, I think now, more than ever before, we will be put to the test, and we need to rise above them. If we are attacked with hatred, let us show love; where there is intolerance, let us show compassion. I would like to propose that instead of name calling and criticizing them, we post a prayer for them. For each person that makes an unkind statement, we pray for their healing and awakening. If we were to make this a prayer meeting place rather than vent our anger, as they hope that we will do, not only we will be spreading the Lord’s word, but we will have a greater impact on their frustration, being unable to manipulate us. It IS difficult, I won‘t say that it isn’t, but think of how Jesus suffered, and how badly he’d been treated. He calls us to be like Him. It is what we must do.
I pray that all of the political leaders, in America & around the world, come to know the Lord’s presence and see the error of their ways. Teachers are being targeted by states like Wisconsin and Ohio. Teachers often spend more waking time with children than thier parents do each day. So the basic concept to decry what they make, which is typically a middle wage salary, are being robbed of the in the name of austerity. The best way to get rid of the good teachers is doing exactly what Wisconsin did this past year.
Warren Buffet, the second wealthiest man in the United States said billionaires are sick of being coddled.
Everywhere you look people in the middle class and the poor being attacked. The safety nets for the poor are being eliminated one by one by our patriotic Tea Party Members. See here‘s the mistake you’re making. In order to have someone actually debate a point with you, YOU first have to make an attempt at a coherent point.
All you did was regurgitate the talking points of those out to silence any voice of opposition that have no basis in reality. If this alleged hate actually existed all the losers in the liberal blogosphere would be reporting on it daily. It doesn‘t happen because it doesn’t exist. The best they can do is post a contrived story every few months about some inane statement completely taken out of context to intentionally mislead people into thinking it‘s something it’s not.
I’m not a big fan of either Limbaugh or Beck, but referring to them as hate mongers and racists etc is assinine and it’s getting real tired. I don’t really care for Limbaugh because he tries to be a little too funny for me, and I don’t think he does a very good job of it to boot. I enjoyed Beck at first but he got a little bit too obsessed with finding conspiracies behind every door in my opinion. Now that‘s not to say that I don’t agree with some of the things they say and some of their positions, I just wouldn’t call myself a fan. But I can not care for somebodies style or some of their positions without feeling the need to make up stories about what they actually do in some sad attempt to stear people away from them. But then that’s an adult response, which isn’t so popular in this day and age.

We were young,ambitious,hard working,and the extra shifts resulted in a huge income increase. managment said our output was worth paying time and a half,and double time. I remember us being in the lunchroom, having supper,on night shift,when we were approached by a couple of co-workers, and union leaders. We were told our work, had caused the layoffs, of 3 workers. We replied we were just doing our jobs, enjoying it,and getting well paid for it. They “Warned” us to slow down. We refused. The next warning came in the form of a “Threat”. Slow down, or you will get a doorjamb across the back of your heads! We didn’t,and actually had to watch each others backs continually. We eventually left, to move on to other exciting life experiences. The workers cheered,and management tried to give us incentives to stay. Needles to say, my experience with unionism, is not an anomally.
