After Battling Addiction Actor Launches ‘Holypop’ Web Project to Inspire Young Christians

Holypop Helps Young People Connect With Christ | Chris Carberg

Actor and Holypop CEO Chris Carberg

Meet Chris Carberg. He’s the 28-year-old Hollywood actor (you may recognize him from his roles in “Kill Zone” and “Sydney White”) who launched Holypop.com — a new web site that targets young Christians in an effort to spark their interest in biblical principles.

His story, characterized by a number of twists and turns, is an intriguing one to say the least. Caberg, who has struggled with addiction in the past, knows a thing or two about the difficulties that young people face.

During his college years, the CEO of Holypop battled prescription pain pill addiction. While his dependency didn’t manifest itself until his college years, the groundwork was laid early on. As a child, he suffered from migraines and, in middle school, he was prescribed pain pills to ease his discomfort. This was only the beginning.

“College…was when I got addicted to Vicodin and Valium,” he said in an interview with the Blaze. “I started using the drugs recreationally early on in [my college years].”

Carberg described his experimentation with a stimulant called Fioricet. Once this drug lost its effectiveness, he moved onto Norco, which he characterized as “another type of Vicodin.” Before he knew it, he says his addiction got out of control. Over a two-year period, Carberg described having taken thousands of pills, burning through his life’s savings and racking up major charges on credit cards.

The actor-turned-Christian web guru discussed the dramatic toll the addiction took on his life. At the height of his dependency, he says he was taking 60 or 70 Vicodin per day, along with 10 or 20 Valium so that he could sleep at night. Obviously, the effects were noticeable.

“I wasn’t dependable. I went on a bunch of auditions completely high out of my mind and I remember embarrassing my family as I would go on rants [to] their friends,” Carberg explained. “I lost jobs, broke relationships, and thought I was God…My drug usage killed my family for awhile, and broke my parents’ hearts.”

But there was a light at the end of the tunnel for him. When Carberg was 23, he says he became a Christian and “gave [his] life to God” — something that has profoundly changed his life and path. After overcoming his intense addiction and finding God, he became determined to help young people tackle life obstacles.

This is where Holypop comes in. Through the site, Carberg hopes to target and assist young people — ages 18 to 24 — who are looking for answers to life’s tough questions, as he claims that it takes a realistic approach to dealing with young people.

“If I’d had Holypop when I was 15, I think I would’ve lived those years very differently, because I would have had somewhere to turn when I was hopeless,” he said.

Aside from offering help to the hopeless, Carberg created to site to address his concern over the fact that young adults are abandoning the church en masse. Aside from churches changing their teaching on gay marriage, he says, many have also slipped away from focusing upon what’s truly needed, according to biblical mandate, to have salvation — a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

“This all stems from a fundamental lack of biblical literacy in the family, and an unwillingness of the modern church to seriously confront controversial issues,” says Carberg. “Many parents continue to push their religious beliefs without understanding what they believe and why, and modern young people have been trained to smell any hint of hypocrisy. That‘s why we decided it’s time we go straight to the young people.”

In addition to countless translations of the Bible, Holypop includes study tools and answers to important questions young people might have. Under its “Get Answers” section, the site explores sexuality, abortion, the Holy Trinity, drugs and alcohol and plenty more.

“We reconfigured every aspect of our website for this cause, and our passion for developing Bible literacy is the entire focus of Holypop.” Carberg said. “This is a full scale assault against what we know is endangering the future of the church, and destroying faith in America and abroad.”

“Holypop is a place they can go as needed. We’re taking what we call an anti-social approach,”  Carberg told the Blaze. “Today everything is about social communities. In some ways, we think this has dulled some of the importance of one’s own spiritual journey.”

So, on the web site, users can do their daily Bible study and simply connect with God. There are no bells — no interactive whistles. The experience is all about connecting with the Almighty.

“We’re not trying to be Facebook,” he explains.

To better facilitate this personal, one-on-one time with God, Carberg plans to introduce an app he calls “QuietTime” in the next few months.

“QuietTime will transform your private Bible study into an interactive, online experience,” he explains. “In a world of social networks, QuietTime is the anti-social network. All you need is God.”

As for his acting career, Carberg’s always ready and willing to go on auditions. But Holypop, for the time being, is his passion and priority.

You can check Holypop out for yourself here.

Great story about recovery and of course the Blaze tosses in gay marriage. Huh? It’s a story about a guy recovering from drugs, that’s it. The agenda driven Blaze does it again! Pathetic.

New World Translation – John 1:1c – “and the Word was a god.”

Regarding Jehovah‘s Witnesses’ “New World Translation” Bible and its rendering of John 1:1, it may interest you and others of your readers to know that, in support and explanation of their wording of this verse (especially within the third clause with “a god”), there is soon to be published a 20+ year study (as of 1/2012), a thoroughly researched reference work – an historical analysis & exhaustive annotated bibliography – it will be entitled, “What About John 1:1?”

To learn more of its design and expected release date, you are invited to visit:

    http://www.goodcompanionbooks.com

When finally published, apart from discussing many of the other topics and scriptures often related to the man-made Trinity doctrine, you will also discover that we have collected information on about 430+ scholarly reference works (mostly Trinitarian) which, throughout the centuries, had opted to say something other than, “and the Word was God,” and that, included among them are over 120 which had chosen to use “a god” within the third clause of their renderings.

As you might expect, we are very excited at the opportunity to share our findings with others.

      Johnoneone,

I appreciate your comments and I am moved to contribute to the conversation.
The rendering of John 1:1 into English is a very important matter for all Christians, as it has a bearing on the understanding of who the Almighty God is, and the relationship between God and His Son, Jesus, the Christ of God.
John 1:1 has to agree with with all scripture, it does not and cannot stand alone to express the nature of the Christ. The entire book of John, when read carefully, describes Jesus as the Son, not as the Father.
The New World Translation renders John 1:1 as; “In [the] beginning the Word was, and the Word was with God, and the Word was a god.”
This agrees with the entire Bible in explaining the true nature of our God Jehovah and of the one He sent forth, His Son Jesus who was to be the redeemer of all mankind by means of his ransom sacrifice.
If John 1:1, as rendered in in the KJV is an accurate translation, then all the rest of the book of John is as a consequence made to be false.
      That cannot be.

19 Therefore, in answer, Jesus went on to say to them: “Most truly I say to YOU, The Son cannot do a single thing of his own initiative, but only what he beholds the Father doing. For whatever things that One does, these things the Son also does in like manner. 20 For the Father has affection for the Son and shows him all the things he himself does, and he will show him works greater than these, in order that YOU may marvel. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead up and makes them alive, so the Son also makes those alive whom he wants to. 22 For the Father judges no one at all, but he has committed all the judging to the Son, 23 in order that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He that does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Most truly I say to YOU, He that hears my word and believes him that sent me has everlasting life, and he does not come into judgment but has passed over from death to life. – John 5:19-24

Misrepresenting Jesus by claiming he is GOD is a false teaching. Jesus is the Christ, the Anointed One, our Redeemer, our Lord and King. He is the Glorious Son of the true God Jehovah, or if you prefer, Yahweh.

You should really find out what “I am” means. You should read it in context and read it in the context it was used in Genesis 3. Jesus claimed to be God not the Archangel Michael. All you need is a real Bible not the NWT or talking points form Watchtower magazine. Stop trying to decieve people and go study His word.

Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?
Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:
Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying. Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.
Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

Try reading the words within their context. Don’t be deceived!
Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake.

Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.
At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

Here is another man who had a personal experience with “one who had more love in his eyes than anyone he’d ever seen,” upon dying, who gave him back life and a gift. He didn’t know what the gift was, until all the gifts of the spirit began to manifest and live through him. Jesus’ spoke to many about knowing the kingdom of God, that spirit blows where it will, and you cannot see nor hear it, “unless a man be born over again.” Jesus’ farewell prayer (after he promised to return) was that all who through their words put their faith in him “be perfectly one,” as the Father is in him, and he in the Father, “so also may they be in us, that the world may believe that Thou sent me, and that You love them as You do me.” How else can you know, but this?
Here is one man’s experience and the first time spirit sent from God began to act and speak through him too. His wife recorded what was happening: http://www.youtube.com/AUniversalPhilosophy

Here’s a little more explanation, and a possible attempt to understand, since we human beings often try to understand our Father who is so much more vast than we can comprehend, and his son – and the prophets and teachers of many faiths, and all who have touched God of whom we ask when we seek to know Him: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0BzyT3fgGxb4-OTc5NTY1OTctODk2Yy00ODcwLThkMTItOGM1NmIwYTA2NTEz

Pardon my, what? I just don’t think our Father wants all of us whom He loves so to be fighting among one another, intellectually debating, making rules to worship Him, killing one another in the name of religion. I think He love us so very much more than we can ever imagine that He wants us to know Him.
How can it be but that He give a gift of spirit and we learn to listen to Him in the quiet within our minds? It is as is written: Then we will know that the Father sent him, and that He loves us as He loves him.

He is doing something powerful with his painful experience, showing another example of God working through those who called on him from the depths of their own personal darkness. He is reaching out to generation in peril. I applaud him. We need more of this sort of man in our society to save as many as possible. Theology isn’t about “appealing to a certain personality type” as someone up there in the response list said or consumerism. I recently heard a European Catholic priest (I’m not Catholic btw) talk about how American Christians are looking to “Have it Their Way” much like Burger King or McDonald’s. They think they can just cut out what they want and put in what they want and then their religion is applicable. And then they come into the church and want to make it what they want, rather then following scripture.

Christianity is about following Christ. That’s what the word Christian means…to be a Christ follower.
If you don’t like what the Bible says, you can’t just get the scissors and started hacking away and still call yourself Christian. You have become something altogether different.

The reason that young people are turned off from the church is because fundamentalist Christians (bless them) have turned Christianity into an overly simplistic, reductionist, illogical religion. The idea that the Bible is “inerrant” appeals to a certain personality type, but has the effect of pushing away millions of people who feel that a literal Bible defies logic and common sense. (And sorry, but scholarly research into the Bible shows that it has been subject to human error, just with transcription alone!)

I am a liturgical Christian, and I see no reason to put the Bible up on a pedestal. It is far too easy for human men to misinterpret the Bible to their own ends. I can come up with many different interpretations of popular Bible passages used to “prove” certain dogmas. Anyone who thinks the Bible can be the final “word” on God is denying how much bigger God truly is. And only until Christianity becomes less dogmatic and more open to nuance will it stop turning off so many people.

      @Zhaan

All Scripture is God-breathed and useful teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.
      - 2 Tim. 3:16
I understand that as a rebuttle you‘ll say that I’m being redundent or whatever by using Scripture to prove that Scripture is innerrant. But Scripture is God-breathed. God spoke through regular men to write His Word. He is perfect and infallable, therefore, the Bible is infallable, because it is written by an infallable Author.Just because someone doesn‘t like what the Bible has to say doesn’t mean the Word of God is wrong. It means that they’re wrong, and they need to deal with it themselves. The Bible is true, and they’re wrong!
And what are you suggesting by nuance? Are you suggesting that fallable men who are prone to mistakes should come up with their own assumptions about everything that are subject to human error? Hmmm. Truth is truth. It will not change simply because some people don’t like it.

Truth by its very nature excludes. – Ravi Zacharius

It’s ironic that you use that particular piece of scripture, as it first of all refers to the OLD Testament, not the New Testament (which was not in existence at the time of the original writing). Furthermore, that is just one translation of the verse, which has been expressed in English in any number of ways, including, from the KJV:

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:”

Many other translations use the simpler phrase, “inspired by.“ ”Inspiration of“ is certainly a different meaning than ”written by” (and therefore “inerrant”). Either way, your human interpretation of such a verse might be different from someone else’s, so for anyone to claim definitively that they know the mind of God based on an “inerrant” Bible leads to all sorts of problems.

Regardless, name one passage in the Bible that says you must believe that the Bible is totally inerrant (in not just its original form but in ALL modern translations) in order to get into heaven. You’ll find no such thing. Whether or not someone believes *in the Bible* as “inerrant” is irrelevant – they simply need to believe in Jesus Christ. People may quibble about details, but all you need is Jesus.

By focusing so much on the alleged inerrancy in the Bible, evangelicals turn away people who might otherwise be drawn to Christianity, which was my original point.

First of all, I never said that you had to believe that all of the Bible was true in order to recieve salvation and enter heaven.
For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe that God raised Him from the dead you will be saved. – Romans 10:9
Second of all, I never said that all TRANSLATIONS of the original Scriptures are infallable. Take, for instance, the New World Translation. It twists John 1:1 by saying “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was A God.” This translation is horribly skewed. I do not believe that all translations are accurate. I certainly wouldn’t use the Message translation to do an in-depth Bible study, though I do still like the Message. But Scripture is perfectly infallable in the original texts written in Hebrew, Armenian, and Greek.
If you can’t see that the Bible is the HOLY, INFALLABLE Word of God, then I can’t help you see it.

I think most people are smart enough to understand what Jesus was teaching and they don’t see it reflected in the members of the church. I think the reason for that is the doctrine that says you need to have a belief but works are to be avoided because they are filthy rags.

      @Neofan

To God, our best works are like filthy rags, but faith without works is dead. Through a faith in Christ Jesus we are enabled to do works that truly please God. Without faith in Christ, we cannot please God. Just because on our own we can’t please God, doesn‘t mean we shouldn’t try to do good for Him. As a Christian, I am supposed to do my very best for God and others. I am to show God’s love for the world (His Agape) to every person I meet and to help them when I am able. The point is, when I do good, I‘m focused on doing what’s right because I please God. I‘m not looking for extra points with the Man upstairs or for other people’s approval.
But you are very right when you say that many Christians don’t exhibit the love and goodness of Christ.

Today, an important part Bible study is the comparison of translations. Regarding their comparative value, Miles Coverdale (b.1488-d.1568), the one credited with having produced the very first complete printed translation of the Bible into English, wrote: “…one translation declareth, openeth and illustrateth another, and … in many cases one is a plain commentary unto another.”

Apparently, the King James Version translators had also appreciated the work of early translators, for upon their title page they explained that their own work had been, “Translated out of the Original Tongues and with the Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised.”

Interestingly, these KJV translators had even further advised, that is, within their original “Preface: To the Reader”: “Therefore as St Augustine [b.354-d.430] saith, ‘a variety of translations is profitable for finding out the sense of scriptures.’”

Although, for many, John 1:1 plainly declares Jesus (the Word) is God, few are aware of the number of other ways in which hundreds of Biblical Theologians, Scholars and Translators alike have, down thru the centuries, chosen to render the third clause of this verse – that is, as something other than, “and the Word was God.”

      @ColoradoDingDong
I didn’t bash him or his site, just merely pointed out that there are a million other sites out there just like it. I actually browsed his site. Quite underwhelming, really. Oh, and irrelevant as it is, I have my own business website that I made all by myself. Must get back to cartoons now. Bye.

Sounds like a wonderful idea to me! This world could use many millions more dumb Christians! Have you not heard or read that you must have the faith of a little child! I don’t think that was a metaphor – rather that He was speaking in literal terms when he talked about the faith of a child.
Also, have a look at the verse below and do a little searching. I do hope you will receive this as I send it.
1 Corinthians:1:27. But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, Read following also please.

Very nice story Hallowell. You made it thru the whole thing without bashing Christianity in any way.

    60-70 Vicodin a day….?
Well ….His liver has got to be damaged.
Those pills have acetaminophen (Tylenol) in them.
Heavy doses of ( Tylenol ) does permanent damage to the liver.
And from what I understand (one time ) is all it takes.
If he hasn’t had his liver checked for damage .. he should.
I’m glad he turned his life around.

Hallelujah! The more we speak of JESUS, GOD, THE HOLY SPIRIT, the more we quote the BIBLE, the more we encourage one another in the faith, the stronger we all become.

    GOD BLESS BLAZERS!

The Demoralization of America..It all started by taking prayer out of the schools..Then the media and television (tell a vision) promoted sinful behavior rendering it the “acceptable” way to live..having a profound influence on its young viewers.. How sad that we have fallen this far as a nation.. This guy is right.. God the Father and His Son Jesus/Yeshua are the only answers..Sin is the symptom of not having more of Him…they are just symptoms…nothing more..Know God and those symptoms fall away..He is the cure.
The country has been demoralized for a purpose..Communism does not allow for a belief in God.This is why Obama placed a homosexual Czar in charge of the education of our young children.

Make one wonder what the PTA/PTSA does if it doesn’t care that the child safety czar promotes homosexuality in our schools. Do teachers give a flip or is it all about them, the unions and pensions? If they care so much about children, why haven’t they demanded his removal?

      @ Grandma.
I work in public schools, when I am able, I ask various teachers who is Obama‘s safe school’s Czar, they have NO CLUE. They don’t even know his name.

In my entire school, maybe ONE other teacher may know some of what is going on, but not much. I have found I have to be very careful least I offend a teacher by talking “politics”. I usually use the Aristotle method (asking questions). You’d think educators to be more knowledgable, but they’re not any different than the rest of society.

Sadly, religion began dying with one woman, the atheist who won the battle to take religion out of schools. That ruling has affected two generations of young people. If there was no religion taught at home, there was always the Christmas pageant, the Easter play, the Ten Commandments posted on the wall of every classroom, the Bible verse read during morning announcements, the Lords Prayer. Kids learned and had a choice – now, unless they have religion outside of school, they only have one view point, and the Progressives have molded that. God bless Chris and his efforts to help young people, I hope his site is wildly successful. He crawled down a dark hole and was able to pull himself back up with the help of God – kudos.

And Satan always abandons those who he seduces into following his way. Madalyn Murray O’Hare ended up murdered and buried in a shallow grave. Such chaos wrecked by one woman is amazing.
