One day after North Carolina voters opted to ban same-sex marriage, more than 16,000 people have signed onto a petition to move the Democratic National Convention out of the state.
The effort, spearheaded by Gay Marriage USA, was more than halfway to its goal of 25,000 signatures late Wednesday morning.
“On May 8th, the people of North Carolina voted in support of Amendment One, a constitutional amendment that discriminates against LGBT people, couples & their families,” the petition states. “In protest, the Democratic National Convention Committee should MOVE its convention (September 2012) to a state that upholds values of equality & liberty, and which treats ALL citizens equally.”
The issue of same-sex marriage has been reignited in recent days: On Sunday, Vice President Joe Biden became the highest-ranking administration official to indicate support when he said he was “absolutely comfortable” with it. President Barack Obama has so far declined to elaborate on his “evolving” views, though remains formally opposed. His campaign did however say he was “disappointed” in North Carolina’s vote.
There has also been a growing movement to add a marriage equality plank to the Democratic Party’s national platform.

Posted on May 9, 2012 at 5:32pmThey didn’t vote anything “against” gays. They voted to keep marriage as marriage, which is a no brainer. If these people had an ounce of brain between them they would create their own institution. Marriage is already taken,.

Posted on May 9, 2012 at 3:20pmEach state, according to our constitution, has the right to issue a certificate of marraige.it is required for all couples who marry with in the jurisdiction of that particular state. Some go further, and have a religious ceremony performed as well. The religious ceremony is not under the purview of the state. The state‘s law’s, from speed limits to the amount of taxes one pays are gender neutral. As should the issuance of a legal certificate uniting two people. Equal Rights, not a church wedding, are what we speak of. As an American, I can not belive, nor understand the level of hate that must be carried around to say, some Americans are more equal then other Americans…..

Posted on May 9, 2012 at 2:11pmNorth Carolina would be better off if the convention were moved out of the state. Less muss, fuss, and billions to clean up the mess after the convention.

Posted on May 9, 2012 at 1:43pmHere we go once again. This is a states rights issue and if the people speak out in favor of traditional marriage, that is between one man and one woman, then you must live with it. Just like when they vote in favor of gay marriage. States Rights. getting married is not an absolute right. If you want t marry your dog, or your daughter or several women, that’s against the law. So why should gay people get a special consideration that others who believe in non traditional marriage don’t get? Let them have their civil unions. That’s a fair compromise.
