After National Outcry, Fed Reverses Anti-Christian Bank Decision in OK

The Federal Reserve has reversed its decision that originally forced a small Oklahoma bank to remove from its premises and website Bible verses, crosses, and Christmas buttons. The reversal occurred after national outcry and a letter from two Oklahoma lawmakers who charged that the decision may be unconstitutional.

(See our previous coverage of this story here and here.)

Sen Jim Inhofe (R-OK) and Rep. Frank Lucas (R-OK) sent a joint letter to Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke on Friday afternoon saying they have “seldom encountered a more alarming case of heavy-handed interpretation and enforcement of Federal regulations,” and charging the decision may be in violation of “fundamental Constitutional protections.”

The letter ended by demanding a response. That response came Friday afternoon, when the Federal Reserve’s second in command  contacted Payne County Bank president Lynn Kindler in Perkins, OK and told him he could once again display his Christian artifacts and Bible verses.

“The Federal Reserve restored everything on a permanent basis,” he told KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City. “It’s over. We can put everything back up the way it was and keep it there.”

Originally the Fed told the bank its Christian symbols violated the discouragement clause of Regulation B of the bank regulations. The clause prohibits “… the use of words, symbols, models and other forms of communication… [that] express, imply or suggest a discriminatory preference or policy of exclusion.” Fed examiners interpreted that to mean the bank’s overtly Christian messages could offend people of other faiths.

“This is an all out assault on the faith, values, and rights of the bank, its employees and the people of Perkins they serve,” Sen. Inhofe said in response. “It is absolutely ridiculous for the regulation to be interpreted this way, and it unduly discriminates against a persons faith in Christ and their Constitutionally protected freedom to publicaly express that faith.”

Rep. Lucas agreed: “The recent actions taken by the Federal Reserve at Payne County Bank are of great concern to me. I do not agree with its interpretation of Regulation B in this circumstance and believe that it infringes upon fundamental Constitutional rights afforded to all Americans.”

And whether or not the Fed agreed too, it acquiesced. That pleases Perkins citizens.

“I think that’s good,” local resident Bill Erwin told KOCO. “I don’t think they should have had to take it down,” added Carrie Kinsey.

I’m sorry, MAY BE UN-CONSTITUTIONAL? Please, lawmakers, can I send you a copy of the United States Constitution to read? Oh. I forgot….. its a few doors away. You know, instead of heading back to your cozy cottage in DC, you could just stop by one night and ask the Nat’l Archives to allow you read the ORIGINAL; it may help you better connect with your roots/history. Let me make it easy for you, I’ll buy you a ticket to see it – will that help? Also, I have a couple book suggestions on the interpretation of the document too if you wish?

I think we should do a Mr. Smith and parade you in front of the document prior to heading to the WH or Congress- if you don’t have the slightest tear in your eye, or even an emotional response, that should be one de-merit for you coming into office!

MAY BE UN-CONSTITUTIONAL…. commit to something? Stand FOR something? MAY BE…??

Great work and keep vigil and keep the pressure on… 1st Amendment is about Religious fairness and the freedom from being prohibited the free exercise thereof…

There is NO separation of Church and State…

Also at the end, one commenter said that there should be no religion in companies who deal with public, uh duh… that is just about ALL businesses, privately owned businesses… Even a bank, while it is under Federal regulations, it is NOT owned by the govt, it is a PRIVATE company and the govt has ZERO say in what a private company or person can do with their religious freedom of expression…

Now take this VERY seriously and re-read what I just said…

The Fed just tried to demand that a PRIVATE COMPANY not have religious freedom, again it may have been under Federal regulations because it handles currency, it is still PRIVATE!

If they were to get away with that, they could then move forward to demand that PRIVATE CITIZENS not be allowed to display Religious symbols or displays outside of their own PRIVATE HOMES! To wear religious jewelry in public… this is all testing of how far the Fed thinks it can get away with and each time they dip their toes in the waters, BITE THEIR LEGS OFF!!!

The govt can only do what the people allow it to do, do NOT allow the Fed to push us around on Religion and the 78% Christians should not have to bow down to the 1.5% atheists in our country…

Let the world know we are not afraid to stand up for our beliefs and religion. I have no problem with someone believing and practicing a different religion or even not accepting any religion. Take a look at history

The United States Gold Reserve Act of January 30, 1934 required that all gold and gold certificates held by the Federal Reserve be surrendered and vested in the sole title of the United States Department of the Treasury.

The Gold Reserve Act outlawed most private possession of gold, forcing individuals to sell it to the Treasury, after which it was stored in United States Bullion Depository at Fort Knox and other locations. The act also changed the nominal price of gold from $20.67 per troy ounce to $35.

A year earlier, in 1933, Executive Order 6102 had made it a criminal offense for U.S. citizens to own or trade gold anywhere in the world, with exceptions for some jewelry and collector’s coins. These prohibitions were relaxed starting in 1964 – gold certificates were again allowed for private investors on April 24, 1964, although the obligation to pay the certificate holder on demand in gold specie would not be honored. By 1975 Americans could again freely own and trade gold.

Those who dont know history are doomed to repeat it.

I am still NOT satisfied about this! Who was the person in charge of overstepping their authority and passing this decision on? We should DEMAND that they be fired for this! In any other job if you are to overstep your bounds and break the law you would be fired! Why is it that the Traitors in our government can constantly push to see what they can get away with but not have any consequences to pay if they are exposed or meet opposition? Please call or write the same senators Sen Jim Inhofe (R-OK) and Rep. Frank Lucas (R-OK) who wrote the first letter and DEMAND that they follow up and ask that someone be fired over this bigoted decision!

The “Feds” have overstepped their bounds on this church/state crud, and it’s high time we put them back in the box they belong in. Fire these particular “Feds.” Let them try to get a real job where others tell them what to do. That will be their hell on earth

A private entity (The Federal Reserve) told another private entity, which I’m assuming they own or has bailed out for billions, (OK Bank) to remove something the Fed wanted removed. I don’t see the problem here.

That’s like saying Corporate telling a local store that they own, say Walgreens, to not display anything Christian specific. That‘s they’re choice as property owners to determine.

If this was Government telling a private business what to do, it’d be a different story.

Why are you private property rights conservatives up in arms over this? I know why. You’re all hypocrites.

but everyone wants congress (elected officials) to decide thier banking policies ergo auditing the Fed

If congress is too stupid to run health care (and they are)
and if congress is too stupid to run our nations energy policy(again they are)

The Federal Reserve was enforcing a FEDERAL Banking Regulation which was, it appears, intentionally written to allow broad interpretation. Unfortunately for them, this particular interpretation was blatantly contrary to the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which, if your really are or ever were, an American Soldier, you took an oath to support and defend.

Wouldn’t surprise me if someone informed them of the possibility of being charged with a violation of 18 USC Sections 241 and 242.

The reason the Fud relented is because it never had the authority to tell that bank to take the displays down in the first place. Principles of schools in small towns, who have received threatening letters from the ACLU telling you that you can’t have prayer in school, or Bible studies, or Christmas pageants, or Christmas displays, need to remember this and throw those letters in the trash. The ACLU is a tiny organization with a lot of paper and secretaries who are busy mailing out letters with empty threats. The ACLU counts on the ignorance and cowardice of average Americans, because usually small towns acquiesce out of fear that they’ll have to spend a lot of money defending themselves.

The ACLU is a paper tiger and it will not file any suits against schools for participating in the Christmas holiday. Why? Because CHRISTMAS IS A FEDERAL HOLIDAY AND IT IS A VIOLATION OF YOUR FIRST AMENDMENT FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO PROHIBIT YOU FROM EXERCISING YOUR FAITH IN PUBLIC. Furthermore, if you have received a threatening letter, contact a Christian law firm (e.g., http://aclj.org/). They’ll send a letter to the ACLU telling them to shut up and you’ll never hear from them again. Better yet, put up a website asking for donations and sue the ACLU for harassment and malicious prosecution. Like all of the Tea Party candidates this past election, you will be inundated with money to cover the costs. Let’s keep these little worms on the defensive from now on and bankrupt them. Oh and let’s not let them spoil our Merry Christmas!!!!

ChiefGeorge, don’t be such a yellow belly. They relented BECAUSE THEY HAD NO AUTHORITY AND WERE VIOLATING THESE PEOPLE’S FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHT TO EXERCISE THEIR RELIGION. Besides, if a Muslim owned bank wants to put up verses on its website from the Qur’an telling followers to decapitate infidels and hang pictures in their lobby on 9/11 to celebrate the collapse of the Twin Towers, I’m sure most of their customers would appreciate the candor.

This incident is a great example of how bad governmental judgements and policies can be overturned IF the American people stick together and by peaceful protest demand their Constitutional rights be upheld. Thanks to Republican Senate and Congressional intervention the Federal Reserve informed the Bank envolved it could return all it’s Christian symbols and Christmas decorations. The liberal left needs to realize that it’s not running the show anymore and conservatives are no longer the “silent minority” in America.

Here‘s a great litmus test that can be universally used to determine a business owner’s rights. Do you say a business owner doesn’t have the right to, for example, have Christian displays, not hire gays, pay men more than women, pay a below minimum wage, or not hire someone for basically any reason. Some might say people have a right to not be discriminated against or judged by these standards. Fortunately I can prove ALL those liberal thinkers wrong, quite easily actually. You may be expecting me to say something like there isn’t such a thing as a right to a job, and that would be correct too, but my argument is even more powerful. If I have a right to close my business, which I do, then all the aforementioned reasons to not hire fall under this ultimate authority. Thus also proving that I can do with MY business what I wish, even if the government says I can’t. Ha!

Our children no longer have Christian values, then we wonder why they do the things they do? Few of us stand up for our Christian beliefs and let others have dominion over us. Satan, get thee behind me! We‘re so afraid we’ll offend if we believe in Jesus Christ. People, start standing up for what we believe and maybe the country will come around and let us have back our Christian freedom and beliefs again. I’m tired of giving everything to the 20% of the other side, we need to stand together,
Our problems are moral problems and we need to return to our values our forefathers died for.
