After Thieves Rob Man of Valuable Coin Collection, Guess What They Did Next…

File this story under “world’s dumbest criminals.” This one’s a doozy.

Three thieves broke into an Oregon man’s shed and stole tools, two safes with approximately 50 to 60 lbs. of silver and jewelry inside and a coin collection worth thousands of dollars. However, instead of cashing in on the full value of their ill-gotten goods, the thieves first headed over to the nearest Coinstar machine and tried to exchange the coins for cash.

A Coinstar machine. Thousands of dollars worth of rare, valuable coins. No joke. Did they at least get a sizable payout? Nope: they got a whopping $450.

Making matters worse, police say one of the thieves is the son of the man they robbed.

“The crooks were idiots, just simply an idiot,” said Dan Johnson, Sr., the owner of the coins.

Deputies said Dan Johnson, Jr., along with two other suspects, broke into the outbuildings on Christmas. Yes, Dan Johnson Jr. robbed his father on Christmas day, stole jewelry, silver and his coin collection and then tried to jam the coins into a Coinstar machine.

See the FOX 12 Oregon update:

“To not know the value of what they had taken, just to get pocket change for it. Makes me feel good he was a stupid person and didn’t realize what he had,” Johnson said.

Yeah, he’s talking about his son.

After Thieves Rob Man of Valuable Coin Collection, Guess What They Did NextThis guy.

The Coinstar machine wouldn’t take some 500 silver quarters the burglars had stolen; they carted those off to the bank, KPTV reports.

Luckily, Johnson has been able to recover portions of his collection.

Once the theft was reported, the bank contacted Johnson and returned the coins. As for the ones they put in the machine, Johnson — with the help of some friends — has been able to recover portions of his collection by going through the coins deposited in the Coinstar receptacle.

“It was an inheritance, which made it even worse because I lost an inheritance that was meant to go forward for my children and grandchildren,” he said.

And it’s safe to say that Johnson is just a little peeved with his son (who’s still at large) and has no problem with the idea of Jr. being put behind bars.

“I feel much better and I‘m hoping that they’ll be off the street for a long time. I don’t want them to be around anybody else,” Johnson said.

If I was the father, I would be vastly disappointed and deeply saddened.

Like all fathers, I have cradled my daughters when they were babies, fed them, and changed their nappies. And wondered how great their lives might be. Fantasized about their future.

And I’m sure he was just such a father.

    And then this.

I thought he looked like a druggie because he was so skinny and the look in his eyes. Not by his apparel.

No. There is overlap, but all idiots are not thieves, and all thieves are not idiots. Take several members of the house, the senate, and the administration for instance. Many are idiots, many are thieves, but some of the thieves are quite brilliant in their theft.

It’s hard to say really. I think the statement that most thieves that get caught are idiots would be more accurate.

The good/great thieves are most likely caught much less frequently and their crimes are much more intricate and difficult to prove. Given this fact, it’s hard to say that most thieves are dumb. Personally, I think you have to be rather smart to get elected to Congress.

@ Baddoggy, too true. Silver especially is ready to go sky high. Especially when you realize that gold is at a high but proper price and silver should be 1/16 of that value but trades at a fraction of that. That silver will skyrocket in price. And copper is already skyrocketing, my family is in the electrical contracting business, so I hear about that all the time.

I doubt any kid creepy and disgusting enough to do something like this to his father who collected these coins at great sacrifice likely over many years….he was also ripping off his brothers & sisters and their children (grandkids)…this guy is a real jerk and likely a druggie….judging by the pictures…. This is not the kind of thing you laugh about later…. this showed real moral bankruptcy which doesn’t necessarily have morality spring out of it suddenly just because somebody grows a few years older…. Unfortunately too many parents are letting the culture raise their kids….if you can get your kids in private school do it…I did with my daughter for 5 years and believe me she is nothing like her peers…I kept her out of the “culture at large”…and she is a sweet, decent old-fashioned firl and I couldn’t be more proud of her! I had a large video library of decent movies and kept her away from TV programming which is helping in the depraving of America….also keep them out of “Health” classes in school….this is where a lot of the evil is done….sex / drugs / also keep them out of any drug or alcohol program or bullying….these are the doorways the anti-American folk creep into schools to destroy morals and decency…and promote PCness.

We told this kid and his friends that they were born as descendents from monkeys then we are shocked when they act like animals.
We told them that ‘church’ was stupid and took the Scriptures out of school so he dismissed the truth in the Bible and plunged into the depth of despair in a life of drugs, satanic music and hate.
    We reap what we sow.

America was the moral compass in the world and now we lost that in the last few generations.

In 2012 we MUST fall to our knees and be humble of heart and PRAY that our creator God would forgive us. THEN we must turn from sin and teach truth and prepare to fight and debate the wicked at every opportunity… unto death!

    Ephesians 6:12
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

God help us and guide us in 2012

Please quote your scripture in church. Making like religion is the answer to all the problems in the world. Religion is the root of most crimes against man in the world. People like you who think that because they spout scripture that makes them more moral than the next.
This kid is an idiot, no religion is going to help that. It is not the absents of religion that did him in, it was the failure of parenting that is the cause. You can’t blame God or the lack of God for such things.
You must begin to take blame for your failures, because God might forgive you, but society will not.
