SANDWICH, England (AP) — Tom Watson has aced the 178-yard sixth hole in the British Open, his 4-iron shot bouncing once on the green and dropping into the cup in the second round Friday.
The 61-year-old Watson, a five-time British Open winner, threw both arms in the air, high-fived playing partner Henrik Stenson, shook hands with amateur Tom Lewis and took a bow for the cheering crowd.
As he walked toward the green, Watson said: “Wish I could have seen it go in.”
Dustin Johnson aced the 16th during the opening round, the first hole-in-one at the Open since 2009.

Posted on July 15, 2011 at 4:31pmChalk one up for the good guys. Tom is a true gentleman, magnanimous in victory and defeat. He is generous and kind, never swears. A throwback to when men were men.
Life has been good to him and he is good to life.
Manners maketh manneth.

Posted on July 15, 2011 at 3:51pmYou go Tom. The dunderheads who troll this story don’t understand you are eleven years older than those who qualify for the Senior Tour here in the US, and yet you are over there playing against all the young ones, and holding your own!! The old lions prevail now and then…..

Posted on July 15, 2011 at 4:35pmGo Tom. I had an opportunity in the early 1990′s to play in a pro am with Tom. He is an amazing player and all around great guy. Always humble, always the gentleman. I remember him making considerable time to sign autographs and interact with the kids. So much classier than Tiger, who I had an opportunity to see in action several times. Tiger was way to caught up in the celebrity thing. Tom is one of those people who understands and represents the true stature and traditions of the game. Tiger represents Tiger and Nike.

This never changed. It has always been so.
But you silly gooses want to calcify in some ‘golden age’ from memory.
Wake up!

And relax. If America as an idea is as sacred and grand as you clamor to assure everyone it is, then nothing can hurt it. Just like God.

Posted on July 15, 2011 at 3:44pmWhat a complete moron! You have no sense of history, of the spirit of competition, of appreciation for the accomplishments of our elders. Tom Watson does indeed represent a different era of sport, but what’s wrong with that? It’s nice to see our heroes succeed. I‘m sorry for you that you clearly don’t have any heroes. That must be a truly sad and hollow existence…

Posted on July 15, 2011 at 4:53pmThose of us that can remember when professional athletes played the game for the games sake, understood and showed reference to its traditions and players who came before them were surely blessed. Today you have a growing number of college athletes who sell their bowl rings and focus more on their celebrity status than the game. Money has and will continue to erode the meaning and traditions of some sports to the point they no longer be of interest. And that’s when the money will dry up and, to paraphrase Lee Trevino, some of them will be parking cars.

Posted on July 15, 2011 at 1:17pmHey grumpy losers– if you don’t like golf, don’t click on a golf headline. If you like golf but you don’t like the story, push the ‘back’ button and leave everyone else alone. This was a cool shot! Made me smile today. If you don’t like it, go back to your doom bunkers and let others enjoy it.

Posted on July 15, 2011 at 1:04pmI‘d like to see The Blaze remove the ’comments’ section. Normally I like to read people’s thoughts and ideas but this has become a ridiculous banter, basher, insult, sarcasm forum. Internet bravery at it’s best as well. Expressing that, I‘m ready for all the backlash that I’ll get for it including, “If you don’t like it, don’t read it.” Bring it on. Most here are more than capable of it. For the rest of you, no offense.

‘Millionaires playing golf, yawn.’
************
In America, yes, only wealthy people play golf. I had to spend 10 months in Cape Town for work, and EVERYONE plays golf there. Men, women, children–everyone. It is not very expensive, and it is safe (armed guard).
I actually bought clubs, took lessons, went to practice and also played a few 9 hole games with the friend I took lessons with.
I guess my point is, Countries and the way they are set up are so different. In each one, despite problems, there is so much to be happy about. I travel a lot for work, and everywhere I have traveled, people are OK and happy. Even in the most extreme places, like Regina, Saskatchewan or Cape Town, South Africa.
Why are you guys here on the Blaze are so hateful and angry?

Posted on July 15, 2011 at 12:43pmBizarre. I think the Blaze does not actually have writers, as it has a program that randomly selects Drudge headlines and then adds a couple of lines of indented text to make it seem Blaze’s own. It is the only explanation for the story selection.
Personally, I was thinking maybe the Blaze dscovered Tom Waits, but it is way above their paygrade.
