Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said Americans need to "adjust" their tastes so they will like eating nutritious foods. (AP File Photo)
Eating well isn’t that hard — Americans just need to tweak their taste buds to find it more palatable, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said this week.
Speaking to members of the National Restaurant Association on Monday, Vilsack said Americans need to “adjust” their tastes so they’ll like the healthful foods the government wants them to eat.
“You know, as we deal with this issue of reducing sodium and sugar, it sounds simple to do, but you all know better than I do, it’s not as simple as it sounds,” Vilsack said. “It’s going to take time for people’s taste to adjust and they will adjust over time, but it will take some time.”
To achieve this, Vilsack told the audience that the department has “a number” of research projects underway to make nutritious foods more “appealing.”
“So, we have to make sure that what we do is create the appropriate transition. At the end of the day, though, we’ve got to deal with this,” he said.
Listen to the audio, via CNS News:
According to CNS, Vilsack’s comments came in response to a question about the best way to deal with food waste. The goal of the research projects is to make nutritious food more appetizing so less is wasted.
He mentioned visiting a Colorado school that was serving children brownies made with black beans: “The kids didn’t even know they were eating a healthier snack.”
Nutritious eating is of course a cornerstone of first lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign to cut down on childhood obesity. She most recently teamed up with Red Lobster and Olive Garden in a plan for the two companies to cut calories and sodium levels from their menus over the next 10 years.

Posted on September 23, 2011 at 3:03pmI blame the gov for the state of our “food”…they have allowed all the aritifical things into the food..stacked it with sugars. If you read labels you will be surprised to find sugar and “crap” in almost everything. why would tomatoes in a can need sugar???…Hormones to the detriment of our young children ..girls growing breasts years before normal…antibiotics etc..the list goes on..
It just goes on and on, and we have allowed it. yes, “healthy” food is expensive..it does nto mean that we cannot eat healthy. We cannot afford the “farmer’s market” veggies..we found a truck farm and go there and pick our own things. Potatoes in frozen food section actually have “fats”!!..because of the crap added and approved by government. Raw potatoes are less expensive and not “fat”..
Anyway, my point is we have allowed things to get t where they are ..we have welcomed, unknowingly all these things. Growing up, there were very few “fluffy” kids in school…now..it appears to be the norm.
Do it on our own is what we need to do..to hell with the government, do it yourself..no excuses..a little bit more effort i suppose, but worth it.
I don’t like Michelle Obama..but i do not see what is wrong with how she looks.. really..she wears funny clothes and she walks funny..but that is all part of her physical make up, not being fat.
YES THE GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO STAY OUT OF OUR FOOD…BUT WE ALLOWED THEM IN IN THE FIRST PLACE WITH ALL THE ARTIFICIAL CRAP!!!!

Posted on September 23, 2011 at 3:18pmWhen ever the Gov’t “MANDATES” anything that thing immediately gets more expensive. Case in point when Washington State Mandated Auto Insurance the price of the minimum allowed coverage immediately became close to the same price as the full coverage insurance offered before the mandate was instituted, I know because I asked my insurance agent the difference between just minimum necessary that the State now required and the full coverage I was already paying for on my own and the minimum does not carry “Uninsured” motorist coverage, but the prices were within $50 per year. And what was clear is that the New Governor was the Insurance Commissioner for the State, so she got elected because on the backs of the poor since I am probably correct in thinking that the Insurance Industry was one of her biggest donors for her election campaign.
And when the Federal Agency wants to mandate “Healthy Eating” it will eventually either get more expensive or it will import more poisonous foods from outside the country…

Posted on September 23, 2011 at 3:22pmThere is a terrible miconcept about the value of the food. The food we really like is the most nutricious food ever! That is the reason we like it. Over the millions of years or body learned identify the foodstuff that is rich in calories (energy) and proteins that is really what we need. The vitamins and minerals tag along when we eat the “rich food”. For example, bacon is one of the best source of energy and proteins and we love it in every shape and form. There was no problem with liking it, since untill very recently we also eat the blood, liver, heart and lungs, cartilage that came with the beacon. That part of the animal contained all the needed iron, minerals and most of the vitamins one needed. Add a little bit of sunshine and munching on some berries, sauercraut and fruts, and we had everything we needed. The problem is that these days the butchered animal is turned into “cuts” and the valuable parts that we ate earlier becouse of necessity and because we had to, are now separated almost as offal most of the Americans treat as waste. A mistake, but the remedy is at hand: eat eat the beacon in moderation, without feeling guity; and try to have more of those “internals”, pop a vitamine pill here and there. Your tase buds know better what you need than the burocrats. One thing your tastebuds do not know is how much you need to eat. We experienced starvation more ofthen than not, so our body does whant it had to do for thos millions of year: store to save your lives

Follow the progression on how they have tried to change our behavior:
1st They suggest it to us with ad campaigns. (we still eat what we want)
2nd They try to educate us & our kids via school, news slots, talk shows etc. (we still eat what we want)
3rd They pass legislation forcing nutrition facts to be printed on everything and even in restaurants. (we still eat what we want)
NOW we have increasing # of Govt. officials saying things like “Americans need to change their taste in food” not to mention proposed legislation to making child obesity a form of child abuse. (we are still eating what we want)
What is the next step in the progression?
How long before the Government just bans the production of snack foods, fast food, etc?
Our Govt is out of control, and it will take a draconian leader with a big stick, strong principals and steel spine to reduce the size and tame the beast that is our current govt. Just gimmie 1 year as king… 1 year… that’s all I need.

Posted on September 24, 2011 at 3:44amHey Spec, glad I caught your post. Sorry, no links, but I will give you my thoughts for what they’re worth (two cents). First Ladies traditionally take on a cause, and Michelle Obama took on the cause of childhood obesity which is serious problem in this country, especially among blacks. That’s a good cause. Who could be against that? Republicans of course, who have mocked her relentlessly for advocating that children eat healthier food and exercise more. That would reduce childhood obesity and diabetes according to – not the government – but nutritionists and your doctor . But the entire concepts is ridiculed. Maybe you explain why encouraging kids to eat healthy is worthy of the hateful words here.
Pollution? I won’t search but I read Glenn saying he was going to pollute even more on Earth Day. No matter, but the movement in the Republican Party now is to loosen restrictions on pollution. We, as a country have already been there: smog, acid rain, polluted water supplies, carcinogenic ground water. And, in the name of profits, Republicans want to go back there.

Less fast food, more vegetables. That would help reduce the bulge in your midsection and your lady will love you for it. Reduce alcohol consumption which will also help reduce those unsightly bulges and improve your mood. Eat more fiber! Fiber helps with natural functions and reduces your chance of colon cancer.
And relax vindicator! Stress is a contributing factor to heart disease and premature death, death which would leave your wife and children without a provider.

The federal governments job is to protect our borders, and our financial security and they have done an awful job (Barney Frank, Nancy Pelosi) doing this. Get rid of the IRS, the dept of education and the EPA. I read today that there is a shortage of medications in our country – so that now hospitals are buying second rate drugs and being overcharged by up to 500%. Why? You know Republicans oppose legislating good health not eating healthy, like making a law banning salt at restaurant…or something crazy like that. It is sad you would try to present it that way. The mocking is from her hypocritically preaching healthy eating while relentlessly not eating healthy. Like how Obama or Boehner would be mocked if they told people not to smoke while they are smokers.
You know republicans oppose overbearing pollution laws and that is where the debate is, they don’t support polluting for the sake of polluting. Unless we going to produce nothing, the direction were heading, we are going to have it. The problem is every pollution law imposed has the same result, more government control. I am not a pollution expert but can tell you this for a fact. My father works at a paper producing facility. When cap and trade was being floated they had a plant meeting and were told if the law passed production and job levels would be cut back to 1960 levels. Just so you know the entire plant is USW.
I’d be curious to know if you could cite one liberal proposed law that didn’t have the end result of more government control. Still would like to know what, if any, liberal ideas you have applied to your own life and reaped the benefits of. Although, I’m starting to think there are none you have applied or could even make up that would benefit an individual seeing it has been months since my first request.

Posted on September 25, 2011 at 2:09amHey Spec. Thanks for you thoughtful, considered reply.
There are laws banning salt in restaurants? Where would that be? Seriously, where is salt banned from restaurants? Link?
You say that the First Lady is “relentlessly not eating healthy.“ ”Relentlessly?” How do you know what she eats (relentlessly)? The President and the First Lady eat out once a month maybe, eat the locally loved food (sorry to tell you Spec, that’s what people in public office do), and that’s reported in the news. That’s what you “know.” But seriously, you don’t know what she eats on a day to day basis do you?
Why the anger and mockery about promoting a healthier diet with children? That’s a good thing, why do you and yours ridicule the idea? Are your not in favor of children eating healthier foods? Do you think childhood diabetes is a joke? Frankly Spec, I don’t think her initiative to promote healthier eating among children is mocked because she ate the local food in a public appearance. I think it’s something else. Spec, you know that too. Cut the crap.
For the fourth or fifth time I’ll answer with the question: why do you give to charities (if you do)? What do you get out of that? It’s not profit, it’s something else, something human. That’s the motivation liberals have. Taking care of our own.

Republicans oppose government regulating healthy eating, like democratically proposed laws like banning salt at restaurants.
http://articles.nydailynews.com/2010-03-11/local/27058674_1_salt-restaurants-fast-food
The following link from AP covers republican opposition to the healthy eating campaign. You probably disagree with their oppositions, but none include healthy children. As shown in this quote, “This shows a very clear trend in trying to undermine some of the important gains in nutrition policy.” Again, they oppose policy and law proposals putting government in charge of regulating healthy eating.
http://www.mail.com/scitech/health/457792-gop-questions-federal-rules-healthier-eating.html
You are right on your relentless point, I’m wrong. Michelle eating unhealthy will receive much air time while her eating healthy will be ignored.
Point is I think parents are better suited than the government to determine what their kids eat and I will determine my eating habits.
Other than charity, a conservative idea, there is no liberal policy you can supply designed to benefit individuals. Liberals take care of their own with other people’s money. This is evident when you compare charitable giving’s between liberals and conservatives. The following quote is from the ABC link below, “when you look at the data, it turns out the conservatives give about 30 percent more.”

First of all salt. Your link is to some Democrat proposing a law banning salt, and a punishment of $1000 for “every salty dish.” Spec, I don’t know the story there, but that is an absurd joke, a parody, which you bought completely. I’m not saying the story is false, I’m saying that the proposed legislation was a joke of some kind – banning salt from New York restaurants? Please. Would you look again for an actual law banning salt, not some goofy proposal designed, probably, to provoke people like you?
I won’t spend many words on your second link. Honestly I find nothing appealing about the idea the Republicans would force schools to provide your children and mine food that every doctor and nutritionist in the country would say is bad for their health (in the name of freedom?). But Spec, of that was not the point of my post was it? My post was about the mockery of the First Lady promoting healthy eating in children. You and I can probably both agree that is pointless, but where we may differ is why the First Lady is an object of derision when she is promoting such a worthy cause. That’s the kind of thing that make liberals wonder.

You could add it to the list of other things you cant produce. Like a liberal principles you have benefited from, other than the conservative principle of charity. Posted on September 23, 2011 at 3:25pmThi government /mainstream medicineaversion to salt as bad for health is more false propaganda[as is this pushing vaccines like flu shots on people].Salt on food helps regulate blood pressure and heart beats. People have been salting food since we descended from the trees practically. the reason many people don’t eat vegetables is because UNDERCOOKED vegetbles have no taste. Cook them till really soft, put salt and some butter on them and all the flavor comes out and children and adults love them.Use the water for pasta of whatever as the vitamins are in them.

Posted on September 23, 2011 at 1:33pmWhat punishment will be meted out if we don’t eat as the government wants us to eat? Monsanto sells hybrid (sterile) seeds. They produce one bumper crop, but the seeds are sterile. Farmer can’t save seeds from one crop to the next. They have to buy more seeds. By the way, Soros is an investor.
Report Post »cgizzy
Posted on September 23, 2011 at 1:37pmThats the problem with hybrid seeds and not all of them are sterile but if you do manage to get some to grow, dont count on it being the same kinda of plant as it’s parent. That kinda gives me the creeps actually.
I think this is done intentionally, that way farmers have to keep coming back each year for more seeds. As a result though, people have forgotten how to store seeds and re-plant them for next year.

Posted on September 23, 2011 at 1:41pmSo, Vilsack expressing an opinion about more healthful eating habits somehow, in your mind, translates into him TELLING YOU — you, personally — how to eat? Man — egocentric much?
Report Post »Public officials are allowed to express opinions and respond to questions in public. All of them — y’know much like Dick Cheney, Bill Clinton and Condi Rice. Expressing an opinion does not equate to a government mandate.
But I do see your point: people should definitely each whatever they want and however much. After all, there is no obesity problem in the US. Those who b#@$h and whine about “Obamacare” and health care costs need to take a look at what obesity and diet-related diseases cost each of us every year. Not to mention the fact that according to DoD statistics almost 30% of those who see to enlist in the military are considered unfit to serve without some conditioning and decrease in BMI. But don’t, for goodness’ sake, let facts get in the way of your righteous indignation.

Report Post »Sunstein: By a nudge we mean anything that influences our choices. A school cafeteria might try to nudge kids toward good diets by putting the healthiest foods at front. We think that it’s time for institutions, including government, to become much more user-friendly by enlisting the science of choice to make life easier for people and by gentling nudging them in directions that will make their lives better.
GIgi, it should be your choice not one put forth by the progressive gov. It is much bigger than Vilsack. It is the plan obumbler is trying to put upon all of us.

Report Post »dejavu43
Posted on September 24, 2011 at 12:44pmGigi…dear, sweet, addlepated Gigi….your written comprehension is a tad low and you really could profit from a remedial reality check. Yes, obesity is a problem in both adults and children. The issue definitely needs to be addressed by the individual and their doctor, NOT THE US GOVERNMENT!!! …or any other govt. official with sufficient power to ban salt, trans fats, etc., from the entire community, such as tinhorn dictator wannabe, Bloomberg. “Nudging” is one thing, outright banning of certain foods is simply NOT part of living in a free society. Individual responsibility is the touchstone for freedom. As for children, PE is practically non-existent in public schools–can’t have them competing in ANYTHING since it might hurt their self esteem–and then they go home and sit in from of their PC‘s or Gameboys or Wii’s instead of going outside to play. Both parents are working, so there is no time for home cooked meals with fresh ingredients. Again, this is not the purview of the government, unless YOU, personally, wish to live in a dictatorship. If so, may I recommend Cuba and North Korea–in either place, you wouldn’t have to worry about obesity–mine OR yours.

Soy and corn syrup are destroying us and we don’t have the USDA or the FDA looking out for us. I say disband both government departments and stop allowing the processed chemical foodstuffs in our food!
Soy has female hormones. We wonder why young girls are getting big breasts early or dudes are getting manboobs as well as our young guys turning to the pink side, yet the answer stares us all in the face.

Posted on September 23, 2011 at 1:26pmI don’t use salt at all now in my foods and have been doing so for over five years. You would be surprised how great foods taste without added salt. I use pepper mostly. I do not drink sweetened tea even I grew up in Florida where it is the norm. The only time I have salt is when I eat fries and they are already salted or when I have chips, which is few and far between.
As far as eating heatlhy, I think this is a personal choice and should be left up to the individual. If you force people to eat healthy, they will only build up resentment and find ways to work around forced eating habits. I just wish the government would get out of my life. I don’t mind them posting the stats and benefits to eating a certain foods, but let me decide when and what to eat. GET THE FREAK OUT OF MY LIFE.
If you can give women the right to kill their baby, then give me right to eat what I decide. Quite acting like only what you deem to be right should govern everyone else.

Posted on September 23, 2011 at 9:14pmJake, you might want to qualify your assertion. Hypertension is generally hereditary, but, among hypertensives, reducing sodium intake is definitely recommended. Sodium promotes water retention, which increases blood pressure. I was a salt junky. I reduced my sodium intake, and lost 12 pounds. And my blood pressure dropped to normal. That being said, the government has no right to tell me what to eat. The most dangerous place to be is between me and my Bubba Burger.

I would really like to see the government get out of “healthy” food. What the FDA determines as healthy is often clever wording.
