Air Force Bows to Atheist Complaints: Will Remove Bible Requirement for On-Base Lodging

Military atheists are increasingly making their voices heard. The Blaze has previously reported about the Rock Beyond Belief concert at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. Now, there is a situation developing in which non-believers in the military (and their supporters) are attacking a policy that has led to Bibles being placed in on-base lodging facilities.
According to WRWR, Air Force officials have agreed — at least in principle — to remove Bibles from rooms after being pressured by the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers (MAAF), an atheist group that is led by Jason Torpy. The MAAF’s self-described goal is to combat “…insensitive practices that illegally promote religion over non-religion within the military or unethically discriminate against minority religions or differing beliefs.”

The group apparently maintained that the presence of Bibles, which are placed in the rooms by Gideons, is “a special privilege for Christianity.” While the Air Force has not demanded that the holy books be removed from inns, a revised checklist will take effect on October 1 (at the start of the 2013 fiscal year). The books, of course, will be removed from the required items.
A legal review, according to Air Force Services Agency Spokesman Michael Dickerson, found that there is “no requirement to have Bibles in the lodging checklist.” According to WRWR, he also said, “We continue to review the situation and weigh our multiple First Amendment practices and obligations.”
According to One News Now, Dr. Gordon Klingenschmitt, a former Navy chaplain and the head of The Pray In Jesus Name Project, is less than pleased with the military’s decision. Rather than making a move to create a non-discriminatory environment, Klingenschmitt believes the Air Force is merely bowing to the demands of the MAAF, among other atheist groups.
“The Air Force is apparently complicit to this. I don‘t know if they’re removing the Bibles, but at least they’re removing [them] from the checklists, [the result being that] whoever cleans the rooms is no longer required to check whether the Bible is in place,” he explained. ”So if somebody steals one of those Bibles or if they’re confiscated by atheist complainers or put in the trash, then sadly Christian people will not have access to read the Bible at night.”
So, it seems the Air Force will be removing the requirementthat Bibles be placed in on-based rooms. Whether those who prepare these rooms will follow suite — that is yet to be seen. Walter Reed National Military Medical Center also implemented more ardent restrictions — then rescinded them — months ago.

On the side of fareness billeting should have sacred texts available for the absent minded traveler. If USAF were to put one of each religious text with multiple translations into various languages in the room; there would probably be a sizable book shelf. Best bet is to leave any religious texts out of the rooms and if someone wants one they can ask the front desk or use Algore’s Internets.

It doesn‘t matter what the majority’s religion is, each soldier has the sworn duty of protecting this nation and its citizens. Promoting religion is not a part of their oath.

Posted on April 25, 2012 at 10:39pmI’m not sure if I agree with a checklist to REQUIRE that a Gideon Bible be placed in every room, but there certainly should not be a requirement that it NOT be placed in the rooms. Talk about discrimination – it discriminates against Christians who deserve the access and the opportunity to read a Bible. You know what the atheist can do about it? NOT OPEN THE DRAWER! I personally don’t read Gideon bibles because the King James Version is my preferred version. But the presence of the Gideon Bible is certainly not offensive because it merely gives me my free choice, which every American deserves regardless of his/her faith! Purposely removing the Bibles by law or policy is against our founding principles and discriminory on its face.

No, you can’t. And if you ACTUALLY believe that at any point in this country’s history, that anyone could be discharged from the military based on their faith/lack of faith, you are a complete moron. Atheists, agnostics, pagans, Muslims, Jews, whoever: if they serve in the military for OUR country, for OUR freedom (which conservatives constantly preach about,) they have the right to serve, and without discrimination at that.
Please, listen to yourself. Singling out all nonbelievers and saying they should be discharged is preposterous. The men and women in MAAF wanted equality and no special rights for any religion. America was not founded as a Christian nation, America fought for their freedom from a religious nation as a matter of fact. The first amendment to the constitution states:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
Please take the time to read that as many times as you like, especially the first part. It clearly states that no laws can be made to enforce OR restrict religious beliefs, rather that they are a choice of the individual. NOT the collective.
I see no way you can hold any sanity to an interpretation of believing the USA was founded as a Christian nation when you hold a candle to the First Amendment. It would be like saying “Jesus never said let him who is without stone cast the first stone” while holding chapter 8 of the book of john open.

That is not true, they do have a religion and it is very clear that they practice that religion – atheism for the atheists “is” their religion and they are forcing it on all of us, regardless of our faiths. As for the athiest gathering at Ft Bragg, it wasn’t many years ago that Ft Hood recognized a Wicken group and allowed them to hold services on post.
The AF needs to grow a set of cajones and put the bibles back, they can inform the athiests that they are welcome to not read the book. But if they do read it they might learn a lot about love and sacrifice.

It speaks of the full moon, new moon, etc. When a new moon is emerging, you can clearly see that light does not emanate from all sides, but only from one side. All the bible says is that the moon is a lesser light. Which is true. IT IS the moon the lights the earth at night, not the sun. Regardless of where that light originates, the light we receive or see at night comes from the moon, and also the stars.

I don’t think you understand what “thinking for yourself” is. In this case, thinking for yourself means choosing either to have a bible or not to have a bible. NOT thinking for yourself is being REQUIRED to have a bible.
Please re-read the title a few more times. It says they will remove the requirement. It DOES NOT say that you will be barred from having a bible on-base. You always have the option.

From what I understand. Israel was divided into North and South. The Northern Kingdom, comprised primarily of ten tribes, was taken captive, and became the “lost” House of Israel; whom Jesus and Jude mentioned in the New Testament. The Southern Kingdom, comprised mostly from the tribes of Judah, Benjamin and Levi, remained in the Holy Land, until their dispersion several decades after Christ’s birth. At the time of Jesus, the Southern Kingdom became known as Judea. For, in fact, during the captivity of the Jews in Babylon, the Jewish King was assassinated, and no one else thereafter sat as king in that land…

One day I am sure the book will be published. God never asks us to do something unless He has plans for it. The work that is stolen, I leave in the hands of God. I’m sure God has a handle on it, and is more effective in handling the situtation then I would be at present.

I certainly do understand though that it ALL connects with what’s happening now, and with what will happen later on, especially with regards to America, and her common ancestors around the world. The most important aspect to this bible study is understanding the blessings and birthrights given to Abraham, and to whom they were passed down to. This means, being able to discern the interconnected history of certain nations and peoples, and how their destiny relates to Biblical prophecy. If you would like to share your work, I’d be interested in reviewing it…

You are correct. Most advocated for the separation of Church and State, influencing the American government by no faith, not various faiths. The Treaty of Tripoli (signed by every member of Congress) goes on to declare that the United States Government was in no way founded as a Christian government ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Tripoli#Article_11 ). The establishment clause of the Constitution supports this notion of no government-endorsed religion, as well as the Constitution prohibiting any religious test in order to assume office. Yes, that means all that Obama “suspected Muslim”-bashing nonsense was un-American and promoting un-Constitutional ideas.
Fortunately we can have a country whose lives are influenced by religion if they so choose without requiring that the government promote any given religion. The pilgrims who first made it to this country were fleeing a system where Church and State were united as one, being corrupt and oppressing the freedom of its people.
I’m glad our Constitution protects us from allowing this to happen again.

One is an establishment, organization, institution or legal entity, the other is a set of principles, morals and values. Most of the founding fathers, if not all, were against any ecclesiastical rule, as that which existed in England, France, Spain and Rome. In combat if you‘re Christian you can pretend for some reason you’re special and your god will protect you, or if you die you get rewarded for eternity in heaven. When an atheist steps into battle the only person protecting us is the person to our right and left. If we should fall it’s the doctors job to save us. If we die we’re done. It is just a pure accident and were are all merely evolved from a single cell form of life . ie the Ameba. And then to advance to greater and greater life forms. And now here we are surely as the sun will rise. There position is that there is not even one thought in the present. we are all here purely by cosmic accident. it is a billion ,billion to one chance that we are even alive. I think not. It is by Intelligent Design and the only way to even grasp the concept of Intelligent Design is to admit that there is an All Mighty , there is also forgiveness and salvation. And that when the flesh shall perish the Soul does not. And that there is a Life after physical death. Why else do we have the feeling of Guilt and Satisfaction. Or the emotion of any kind. Would we not be just another Mammal growing hair on the body. Nothing to make us any different than any other Mammal at the top of the food chain. Would we be able to learn, and advance, and to show compassion, and empathy if there were not a God. !

If atheists don’t want to read, nobody is forcing them to. It’s nice to find the Bible in a drawer by the bed when you are away fm home. Sometimes, luggage space is extremely limited if you are flying military lift.

What they ARE saying is that publicly funded institutions, ie branches of the government, schools and the military are constitutionally prohibited from doing this OR condoning it, as it would be in breach of the Establishment Clause of the constitution. Just how difficult is that to understand?
The USAF is part of the military and therefore it can not promote one religion over any other, or none. The military are there to uphold the constitution and not ride roughshod all over it.

The Nazis despised Christianity because it stood for what they were fighting to oppress, which is freedom and tolerance.
Within a year of taking power, Hitler was saying:
“Christianity was incapable of uniting the Germans, and that only an entirely new world-theory was capable of doing so.”
Also within a year of the Nazis taking power, The Twenty-Five Theses of the German Religion, a conscious modeling of the twenty-five points of the Nazi program, was published in Germany. Thesis XV of that Nazi publication states:
“The Ethic of the German Religion condemns all belief in inherited sin, as well as the Jewish-Christian teaching of a fallen world. Such a teaching is not only non-Germanic and non-German, it is immoral and nonreligious. Whoever preaches this menaces the morality of the people.”
In February 1937 Hanns Kerrl, Minister of Religion in the Third Reich, said:
“The question of the divinity of Christ is ridiculous and inessential. A new answer has arisen as to what Christ and Christianity are: Adolph Hitler.”

Do you think christianity is the only religion with thousands of ancient texts, predictions, and evidence for it’s validity? You’ve described basically every major religion on the planet and yet somehow you think because it holds true for your religion it must validate your beliefs over every other mythology. I don‘t know what you’re talking about with roman history – i don’t take ANY history as “fact” because it is inevitably biased (either by perspective, intention, limitations of knowledge, etc.).
Are you afraid of Hades? Are you afraid of the hellish afterlife described in the Tibettan Book of the Dead? Are you afraid that Mormonism is correct? Are you worried god will smite you for worshiping jesus instead of muhammed? Are you worried you haven’t been doing the right things to get reincarnated as a higher being? Of course not. Ask yourself why and then follow your own logic full circle…

Report Post »Athiesm does not have a central tenant other than not believing in the supernatural. There’s no “rule” saying you can or can’t “push” atheistic philosophy on others – therefore it’s not hypocritical for atheists to do so.
However, they’re NOT pushing their beliefs on christians (to do so would be to put pro-atheist texts in hotel rooms). They’re just asking christians to not push their beliefs on others – this act is not promoting atheism like you’re claiming.

No issue with a 36 year old marrying a 13 year old. (Joseph/Mary)
No issue continuing slavery, only coveting your neighbors slaves.
No issue with 13 year old pregnancies because “god did it” or it was “ok” in those days for a 36 year old to impregnate a 13 year old even though god dictated no change on that AFAIK… But we now have laws against it.
To top it off, worshiping the very same god that is in the old testament is like worshiping Hitler because “he had a change of heart”. (e.g. Samual 15, slay infants Amalekites)
Believe it or not, around the world and throughout history similar morality developed without influence from the christian god and the ten commandments.

Slavery is awesome based off our founding fathers which appear to be the very model towards which the general Bible forcing people aspire towards. If you think Christianity ended slavery you’re incredibly dense (as expected). I personally don’t call for expulsion of the Bible, I call for the abolishing of the Bible being required. Either make literally every religious text a requirement or don’t utilize any. When all of you die, it’ll be inconsequential to the world. There will be nothing that awaits you. Nothing will come, you’ll hold onto it until the last second but no longer. There will be no afterlife which you can clutch to your beliefs.
