Air Force Veteran Upset That Daughter Is Asked to Recite Pledge of Allegiance at Public School

A 26-year-old single mother and graduate student who served in the Air Force for four years, told the Seattle Times Friday that she is outraged over policy implemented by a new principal at her 6-year-old daughter’s public school regarding the Pledge of Allegiance. Outraged, that is, by the principal’s announcement this week that all students will now be asked to recite the Pledge of Allegiance each day, something that the veteran did not expect at the dual-language immersion John Stanford International School. The Seattle Times writes on the frustration of Haley Sides:
“Sides was outraged when the school’s new principal announced this week that students will be asked to recite the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of each day. The practice, which has long been mandated by district policy and state law but has not traditionally been observed at John Stanford, will start Monday.
‘It pains me to think that at a school that emphasizes thinking globally we would institute something that makes our children think that this country alone is where their allegiance lies,’ said Sides, her voice oscillating between disappointment and anger. ‘This has no educational value for young children. Absolutely none.’”
The John Stanford International School is an award-winning Kindergarden to fifth grade public elementary school in Seattle’s Wallingford neighborhood, that offers students dual-language immersion programs in Spanish and Japanese. Haley told the Times that she chose to settle in Wallingford so her daughter, who is half-Jamaican, could be part of an educational community promoting multiculturalism. The girl’s father was a Jamaican-born Navy serviceman who died seven months after obtaining U.S. citizenship.
The pledge has been recited in certain classrooms by individual teachers at John Stanford, but not implement school-wide until new principal Jesely Alvarez sent a pair of letters to parents this past week. Although recognizing opposition from some teachers, Alvarez decided to “move forward” in”following state law.” The Times notes that many parents are delighted with Alvarez’s decision, and it is fully supported by district leadership.
Still, Sides is not the only parent unhappy with the decision, or the school discussing the issue without input from parents. Father of a Stanford first-grader, George Ptasinksi questions the policy, saying to the Times “‘Separate but equal’ was the law of the land for a while. Was it right to enforce?”
The pledge was reportedly a hot topic of conversation among parents in attendance at the school’s weekly coffee hour. Officials note that the new policy asks, and does not make students participate in the pledge.
While some parents are strongly in support or opposition of the new policy, the Seattle PI notes that others are more apathetic to the whole situation:
“Alayna Setter, who has a first-grader at the school, is one of them. ‘If people have a problem with it they have the right to opt out, so I don’t know why parents should have an issue with it.’
‘It’s political correctness run amok,’ she added. ‘People are bending over backward to make things issues that really aren’t issues.’”
Over 23,000 readers “liked” a recent Blaze article reporting on a Texas public high school where students were made to recite the Mexican national anthem and Mexican pledge of allegiance as part of a Spanish class assignment.

ARE YOU ALL aware that in all the history of the world ONLY 5% of the people have EVER LIVED IN FREEDOM?? Self-Governed…no king, no tribal leader, no dictator, no genral? ARE YOU AWARE OF THAT….Do you know how many people have died to give us freedom? Do your kids know anything about AMERICAN HISTORY??? They’ve all but stopped teaching it in our schools. DO you know how PRECIOUS FREEDOM is and woman, YOU ARE so damned wrong. SHE is in AMERICA, THIS is supposed to be her HOME, THIS IS THE BEACON for the world…even past what the creeps have tried to do to it (SATAN leading the pack…this is an all out GOOD vs. EVIL thing going on) …. SHE’D better learn how fortunate she is to be here and how much blood has been spent for her to be here and how people from all over the world (already live here) and are dying to come here??? The PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE should be the MINIMUM you teach your kid to do. GOOD FOR THAT SCHOOL…you are on the WRONG SIDE of this…leave if you want to, but don’t try to put OUR great nation of Self-Government and FREEDOM and lump it in with the rest… THIS IS AMERICA!!! We’ve been a lot of other places… THIS IS A GREAT COUNTRY that GOD gave us and we almost had to lose it to know that.

Posted on October 24, 2011 at 2:13amWhat do we expect from a 26 year old? Did she serve in the forces for her country or just a paycheck? This is what makes me sick….she had no business being in the U.S. military when her obvious vision is of a more global setup. So let your kid sit out. This is different than the classes making it MANDATORY to recite the Mexican pledge. Maybe she forgot we are in the U.S.?? When I was in first grade, we had one girl who sat out the pledge of allegience every day. She said her family didn’t believe in God. She was allowed to sit out, no one thought twice about it and that is all there was to it. No drama, no fuss, everyone is happy. And THAT was in 1976. Apparently we were still a fairly free country then.

Report Post »This is from an article in the Seattle Times. as we can see that this is a bunch of BS. If this “partner” of hers sought after and was able to obtain citizenship means that he was proud of this country and wanted to be part of it. If Haley is doing this becauser o him then the information known shows that she is completely and totally disrepecting what he was proud of and she is dishonoring even his memory. I am curious what her military record would show during her service time. This person needs to move to Russia or one of those countries and take all these communists like her that are trying to bring down this nation. That way they could suffer under a communist regime over there and she could even spend the rest of her time wishing that she had not been so stupid as to promote anti-American behavior. I bet that she considers her service as the most disgusting and dishonorable time that she has ever spent. I allways tell soldiers that I meet that I thank them for their service but these pseudo patriots I have no use for. It sounds to me like she has hated America for her entire life, probably because the country didn’t worship her.

Report Post »“Air Force Veteran Upset That Daughter Is Asked to Recite Pledge of Allegiance at Public School”
Her being an Air Force veteran has nothing to do with this story unless the writer of the story wished to give more credence to the story by stating it this way. I would have to wonder if the author of this story is against saying the Pledge as that is the only true reason that I could see to start it with that heading. If the Blaze columnist came up with it, perhaps Glenn should check on where his employee’s loyalties lie.

It is very relevant.
This country was (unfortunately for you globalists) founded by White, Christian, Anglo-Saxons who had a common identity, heritage, and language.
Too bad if you don’t like the truth!
Our DOI/Constitution was founded by people who knew it would be hard for man to govern himself, and they did everything possible, with the things known at that time, to prevent what is happening from happening.
Little did they know about the weather underground, Bill Ayars, socialist professors, teachers unions, and the effect that they would have on our children. Also, they could not see 200 years into the future to the flood of illegal Mexicans and others from every corner of the globe that would eventually take down America.
America ‘will’ be taken down. It is happening before your eyes. Sad thing is, some of you are not bright enough to see it, and, worse, you approve of it! Not until you have been made slaves of some dictator will you get it. Not until you go to work and see the deadbeats who don’t give a crap and make the same, in fact, are mandated to have the same, as you, that you might see it. I’ll hold the bets on that one.

Posted on October 24, 2011 at 8:13amYou’re right. In other countries, if they questioned reciting a pledge written by a socialist in order to get people used to being beholden to the State and used to thinking of themselves as members of a collective, they would be shot.
Here of course, they’re simply condemned by people who claim to hate socialism yet insist on reciting aforementioned pledge as if it were patriotic.
I was never a fan of the pledge, especially once I researched it, who wrote it and why it was pushed hard by progressives. Look back at pictures of kids reciting the pledge prior to the 1940′s, it’s scary (what is that salute they’re doing there…? Hmmmm).

This is of course unrelated to the woman in the article, who apparently objects to the pledge out of a position of idiocy rather than education. While our ends may be the same, our reasons for objecting to the pledge a polar opposite.

Consider Carter, Washington, McCain, and McVeigh. They were all in the military, yet their worth to the nation varied from indispensible to horrific.
The headline seems to imply that military service predisposes a person to a particular political/societal mode of behavior. I don’t think it really makes a difference, IMHO. I’ve seen a number of veterans, right on my street, that I wouldn’t trust to take out the garbage (and don’t ask what my wife thinks of me). They are knuckleheads, with military experience.

Damn proud there are so few in our armed services, media claims notwithstanding.

Posted on October 24, 2011 at 10:41pmShe was also 21 years old when she took that oath, knowing full well the words and meaning of that oath. Her 6 year old does not have the capacity to understand what pledging to a nation really means. It’s nothing more than indoctrination. Is that ok as long as it’s something you agree with?
I took the oath myself, and I understood what I was doing. I personally have no problems reciting the pledge, I just don‘t believe it’s American to force others to. Is forcing someone to pledge allegiance freedom or authoritative?

Posted on October 23, 2011 at 11:10pmI don’t care whether or not this mother is a veteran or a grad student. Doesn’t make a difference. This is an American school on American ground. If she doesn’t want her little darling saying the pledge, then take her to another country for her schooling. Maybe the UN has its own school.
Report Post »‘This has no educational value for young children.’ Bullcrap!. Patriotism, love and respect of country. This woman spent 4 years in the USAF. Who forced her? She wasn’t drafted. She volunteered. Why would you volunteer to protect your country if you didn’t believe in patriotism?
I wouldn’t mind seeing more info on her service record. Partner? So she never married her baby’s daddy?

Posted on October 23, 2011 at 11:44pmRetired Navy here and it pains me to stick up for the Air Force ;) (just kidding) but every family has that crazy uncle that nobody wants to invite to the cook out. While I can not read this ladies mind, I imagine she spent 1 tour in service; just long enough to get the G.I. Bill and moved on. Personally, I think that she is doing her child a disservice by not taking the opportunity to explain that America IS a great country and has contributed blood, sweat, and tears for the betterment of the whole world.

Posted on October 24, 2011 at 1:38amNo, BankerPaPaw, this is the worst, and the Air Force didn’t do it. A conniving, self-serving broad lied her way into the Air Force to get a paid-for education. With her obvious — and she’s outspoken about it, so it’s obvious — belief system, it would have shown more integrity if she’d worked as a ****** and paid for her own schooling.
Report Post »Dismayed Veteran
Posted on October 24, 2011 at 3:46pmWe know nothing about her service except she served 4 years. The Air Force is notourious for slow promotions. I suspect she didn’t get past E4. This means that if she did not make waves she was under the radar. She probably got an Honorable Discharge. Who cares. The issue is not her service but her position regarding the Pledge. Even if the Pledge was origniated by a Progressive Socialist, most everybody believes it is important. It has lost the original meaning and gained a more positive image.

Posted on October 23, 2011 at 11:20pmNot me!
She’s like many young people of her generation. They were shunned away from such notions that America is great and can be greater of we all keep the fires of our freedoms burning bright, this way we become a beacon to others who strive for human freedoms. The USA has lifted millions out of human misery and darkness. Our values sometimes straddle the spiritual realm as well when they note that our rights come from God and not man.
When a nation of people fails to continue on its values it ceases to be a nation and then falls into chaos, bloodshed. When that happens, everyone will be standing around asking what the heck happened? Didn’t America used to be great? Didn’t this nation put a man on the moon way back in the last century? We have lost our way because we have adopted untried new ways at being something other than being American. Being an American to someone like this Vet is something akin now to just being an uneducated hick. Allegiance? What is her allegiance going to be too? Is this generation ready for the one world leader? It sure seems like it is because it would appear that that is the next logical step at our socalled human development. God help us all under a one world system of laws, religion, commerce and the like. Alleginace to it will be fun at first and cool to do, anybody who does not get inline with that after a short period of time will be considered a threat to the state and that would be a step backwards for them.
