‘Air Mail’: Camera Catches USPS Worker Launching Fragile Package Over Fence

Remember when The Blaze reported that a FedEx worker threw a package over a customer’s fence — and that it was caught on camera?

It looks like a similar situation has occurred, only this time it isn’t FedEx, it’s the United States Postal Service (USPS).

Air Mail: Camera Catches USPS Worker Launching Fragile Package Over Fence

“Say it ain’t so, Joe…”

Michael Oreb ordered a 1938 German black forest cuckoo clock and opted to have the (USPS) deliver it.

“I tracked it all the way from Pennsylvania to Bell Gardens to here,” Oreb said to NBC LA.

When the USPS truck pulled up, Oreb happened to be watching his surveillance video and was shocked by what he saw next (via NBC LA):

“I looked and he pulled up, threw it (the box) over the fence and then got in the van and drove off. I went out there and picked up the thing and he was already up the street,” said Oreb.

“I pretty much figured that it was going to be damaged from the distance that he’d thrown it,” Oreb said.

The rare, antique clock was definitely damaged.

“The chains no longer work. I guess they’re jammed up in the back. And one of them is off the rails. And the second hand is catawampus, it’s loose. But I don‘t know what the other ones do but I don’t know what else is broke until I take it in and have them look at it,” said Oreb.

Oreb said he immediately called the postal service to tell them what he caught on video, reports NBC LA. He says a helpful company representative was at his door in 10 minutes, but he wouldn’t let her take the clock, the report says.

“I will take it in and find me a repairman who works on antique clocks and have them repair it and I’ll send them the bill,” said Oreb.

USPS released the following statement:

The U.S. Postal Service was dismayed to see the video of one of our employee throwing a parcel over a fence. That does not represent the kind of service we strive to provide our customers. … This matter is currently being investigated to determine the appropriate actions to be taken with regards to the employee and our customer.

Luckily for the driver, Oreb is a forgiving soul and isn’t pressing the USPS to fire the driver.

“I think he should be reprimanded – maybe put through some more training and stuff like that ’cause you never know what’s inside the packages when you see them,’“ he said.

Considering the financial hole the USPS is already in, they might want to invest in keeping customers happy; they may not be around much longer if they don’t.

There are bad apples in every industry. Fire him and use his firing as training for the others. I had a UPS man put a package UNDER a front hedge…it was an envelope that could have easily been slipped between the screen door and the front door. I complained to the company about not getting it. The only reason I found it was it said it was left at “other.” I did a diligent search. Who leaves packages under a hedge?

Post Office employees do things like this on purpose just to get fired. They have the Union fight it and they settle for retirement at 50% or more of their salary. I’ve seen a lot of it here in Tampa. Now they get to collect retirement for life and don’t have to worry about lay-offs and PO offices closing. They also don’t have to go back to work and deal with the Supervisors or Management that have fun making their lives a living he11 everyday and collect $15K or more bonus’s every Christmas. Sad, but it’s true. It’s how Union workers retire early on propose.

Shoot, I‘d be surprised that the union wouldn’t demand a raise and extra vacation time for the pain and suffering of seeing himself on the video. The only post offices that I have ever in my life seen run anywhere near efficiently were overseas military post offices. Only GIs and no union thugs. Been retired so long now that has probably changed by now too.

There‘s no excuse for throwing someone’s package.
What ever happened to the golden rule?
    I’m a contractor/carrier, and I treat others mail/packages the way I want my mail/packages treated.
As a side note, if you get a lot of packages and you have a small mail box, consider putting up a larger box ( it’s not that easy getting in and out from sitting on the hump in the middle of the car :)
Also make sure your mail box is the proper height and distance from the road  :)

This is nothing new for USPS. They are as corrupt as our government. 5 years ago, one of their workers hit my father in law with his truck. My FinL walked across the street to wait for the “Mailman” who had delivered mail to our address wrongfully. The “Mailman” took the mail from him and when my FinL walked in front of the truck to come home, the “Mailman” pressed the gas and hit him. We called the USPS to file a complaint. My FinL was black and blue from his waist to his feet, he was 84 yrs old at the time. USPS supervisor came out a couple of days later and said that it was not the USPS that hit him and that we would get in trouble for filing a wrongful claim. We took pictures of his injuries and showed them to the supervisor. Again, we were threatened with prosecution for filing a false claim. The “Mailman” did not even get out of his truck to see if this 84 yr old man was ok, or to help him up. The intimidation of the USPS is outrageous. They think they can do and say anything and get away with it, just like our current government. Thank God my FinL was a Veteran and had available medical treatment for his injuries. This article does not surprise me in the least. Another over-inflated government agency that thinks it is beyond the law or moral code.

Kid was OK, bike was trashed, and USPS driver kept going. They tried the same intimidation crap, but LEO still cuffed and stuffed the guy. He’s serving 5 years for DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, and child endangerment. Media wouldn’t even touch it with a 10 ft pole. Last I heard, LEO officer was pressing a harassment suit against the union for their actions.

We have a mailbox on the side of the road and our rural carrier is to lazy to close our mailbox door.
I frequently have to walk up and down the road to collect my mail on windy days.

The postmaster can’t do anything about this as all the rural carriers are CONTRACTORS.

All our important mail goes to our PO Box and they soak us $40 a year for that.

My first approach to solve this would be to try and politely explain to the carrier you’ve found your mail blowing around the neighborhood and to please make sure the door is closed, ps use your cell phone or video camera to discreetly record the convo. If that doesn’t work contact the postmaster again.
The post master needs to grow a set and tell the carrier to close the door. If it isn’t resolved, go to the next higher official.

What is the condition of your box door? Is it the metal or plastic box? I have to leave notes for customers whose doors don’t close right. If it doesn’t latch after the first try then it needs to be replaced. If you had to deliver to over 450 boxes a day within a required time limit, there is no time to mess around with a bent or damaged door to get it to close. Also those molded plastic boxes have 2 doors on them and the wind can catch that back door when you open the front to put the mail in. Tell the carrier or postmaster to make sure to close the door if your box is in good working condition.

No tracking, she calls having a cow, wondering why we delivered the package to the address without checking the name, come to find out WE DIDN’T. We sent it back to the processing plant as a “dead” piece of mail, because the dumbass didn’t put a return address. This stupid woman yelled AT ME on the phone for 20 minutes, claiming she put 2 money orders for $4,000 and about $500 cash in the box.

As a Rural Mail Carrier this video is very disturbing to me. I do the best I can to give good service to my customers and insure that their parcels are handled properly and left in secure places with protection from the weather. It really is a bad reflection on those of us who enjoy our jobs with the USPS and work hard to do a good job to have someone caught ignoring postal regulations so flagrantly. I’m sure few postal employees have any sympathy for him. I also doubt that his customer’s forgiving attitude will have any effect on the discipline he is sure to recieve. And yes people do use USPS for parcels, in fact we deliver many parcels for UPS to rural areas. They drop off parcels at Post Offices every day.

We spend lots of money on these things and none of them turn a profit. So I guess we either eliminate them or realize that the government is the only entity that can possibly do these things because they are so large and unprofitable.

My Black Forest clock has IIII, too. And I agree with Gollygee who said that that clock doesn’t look like an antique one. But I’m no expert (I’ve just seen a lot of cuckoo clocks.).

As for my mail carrier, he’s polite, friendly, efficient (most of the time, although on occasion he mis-delivers mail to us), and just an all-around nice guy. I tend to order a lot of things (usually off of Amazon), so he’s always having to get out of his truck to deposit packages at our front door. He rings the doorbell to let us know that we have a package, if it won’t fit into our mail box. (We tried to put up a much bigger mail box, but it would have necessitated in our removing the old post and putting in a different kind – and it just wasn’t feasible. But we did get the largest one that would fit onto the old post, so that was a help to him.)

Don’t judge all postal workers by the few who make the rest look bad. The majority of them are hard workers and have to go through a lot to get the mail delivered to us.
