Airport Protest Fizzles: Most Opt Out of Opt-Out Protest

CHICAGO (AP) — The big Opt-Out looked like a big bust Wednesday as Thanksgiving travelers around the country patiently submitted to full-body scans and pat-down searches rather than create havoc on one of the busiest flying days of the year. In fact, in some parts of the country, bad weather was shaping up as a bigger threat to travelers’ hopes of getting to their destinations on time.

For days, activists had waged a loosely organized campaign on the Internet to encourage airline passengers to refuse full-body scans and insist on a pat-down in what was dubbed National Opt-Out Day. But as of Wednesday afternoon, the cascading delays and monumental lines that many feared would result had not materialized.

“It was a day at the beach, a box of chocolates,” said Greg Hancock, 61, who breezed through security at the Phoenix airport on the way to a vacation in California. He was sent through a body scanner after a golf ball marker set off the metal detector.

His wife, Marti Hancock, 58, said that ever since she was in the air on Sept. 11, 2001, and feared there was a bomb on her plane, she has been fully supportive of stringent security: “If that’s what you have to do to keep us safe, that’s what you have to do.”

The Transportation Security Administration said few people seemed to be opting out. Some protesters did show up, including one man seen walking around the Salt Lake City airport in a skimpy, Speedo-style bathing suit, and others carrying signs denouncing the TSA’s screening methods as unnecessarily intrusive and embarrassing.

By most accounts, though, the lines moved smoothly, and there was no more or less congestion at major U.S. airports than in previous years on the day before Thanksgiving.

“I would go so far as to say that National Opt-Out Day was a big bust,” said Genevieve Shaw Brown, a spokeswoman for the travel company Travelocity, which had staff at 12 of the nation’s largest airports watching for problems.

Protest organizers — some of whom had no plans themselves to fly on Wednesday — were not prepared to declare the event a flop, saying the publicity alone cranked up pressure on the White House and the TSA to review their security measures.

“The TSA now talks about re-evaluating everything,” said James Babb, an organizer for one of the protest groups, We Won’t Fly. “That is a tremendous victory for a grass-roots movement.”

For days, the X-ray scans that can see through people’s clothing and the new pat-downs that include the crotch and chest have been the target of a backlash among politicians, bloggers and others. The security screenings have been lampooned on “Saturday Night Live” and mocked on T-shirts, bumper stickers and underwear emblazoned “Don’t Touch My Junk,” from a line uttered by a defiant traveler in San Diego.

At the Phoenix airport Wednesday, husband-and-wife protesters Patricia Stone and John Richards held signs decrying “porno-scans” and drew sidelong glances from some passengers but words of support from others, who told them, “Thank you for being here.”

“Just because you buy a plane ticket doesn’t mean you have to subject yourself to awful security measures. It’s not a waiver of your rights,” said Stone, 44. “The TSA is security theater. They’re not protecting us.”

At Denver International Airport, Chris Maj, a 31-year-old computer programmer, carried a sign that read, “END THE TSA ASK ME HOW.” He and three others handed out pocket-size copies of the Constitution.

“They’re touching breasts, they’re touching buttocks, all of these places that if you or I were to touch, we’d go to jail,” he said.

But many passengers brushed off such concerns.

In Atlanta, 22-year-old Ashley Humphries was given a pat-down search of her chest and crotch by a female screener after bobby pins in her hair set off a metal detector.

“I can see how it would make someone uncomfortable, but I’m not easily offended, so it really didn’t bother me as much,” said Humphries, who was traveling with her fiance to spend Thanksgiving with family in Tennessee.

The TSA has said the need for such measures was demonstrated last Christmas, when a Nigerian man allegedly tried to blow up a Detroit-bound plane with explosives hidden in his underwear.

As Opt-Out Day drew near, TSA chief John Pistole pleaded with Thanksgiving travelers not to boycott the body scans and prevent other people from getting home for the holidays. The fear was that if even a relatively small number of people opted for a pat-down, delays could quickly mount. Full-body scans take as little as 10 seconds, while pat-downs take four minutes or longer.

Fearing such delays, some passengers decided to go to the airport especially early and were pleasantly surprised.

Retirees Bill and Margaret Selfridge arrived three hours ahead of schedule at the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport for their flight to Washington. It took only 10 minutes to get through the checkpoint at 8 a.m.

“Now we get to drink a lot of coffee,” Bill Selfridge said.

The weather, though, threatened to spoil some people’s travel plans, especially in the West.

A ferocious, early-season snowstorm pummeled the Rockies, bringing whiteout conditions to parts of the region and closing roads. It was expected to delay air travelers and people who probably thought they were doing the smart thing by driving.

Freezing rain glazed roads in the Midwest, where at least three traffic deaths in Iowa were blamed on the weather. And windy weather in New England could create snags.

More than 40 million people plan to travel over the Thanksgiving holiday, according to AAA, with more than 1.6 million flying — a 3.5 percent increase from last year.

At least some people said they decided not to fly at all, in part because of the airport screening procedures. At an Amtrak station in Chicago, Pam Edwards said she decided to travel by train from Jackson, Miss., even though it would take 15 hours instead of two.

“With all the things with the TSA, I just decided it might be a little bit easier, stress-wise, to take the train,” the 61-year-old retired preschool teacher said as she stepped off the train.

Edwards, who said she suffers from sleep apnea, travels with a machine to ease her breathing. She recalled her last flight and the hassle of being stopped by airport security because of the device.

“I was thinking, I don’t know if I want to go through that again,” she said.

I haven‘t flown since 911 and don’t plan on it.

I don‘t think you understand that a ’guy‘ didn’t start this, that is of course, unless that guy is Michael Chertoff, former head of Homeland Security, and who had a conflict of interest in the purchasing of the machines in the first place. Or unless you’re referring to Abdul Mutallab, who had a bomb in his boxers.

I don‘t think this is about Tyler ’learning’ anything.

This is about our junk and the TSA ‘learning’ about that.

I have firm confidence that my fellow Americans will soundly tear this country apart if the government continues to overstep it’s bounds. And if you stand in their way, they’ll soundly dispatch you as well.

As far as the government ignoring the will and voice of the people, well, that’s nothing new.

This whole episode is Orwellian to me, besides the obvious violation of fourth amendment rights, the invasive and humiliating searches by poorly trained and inexperienced personal of the TSA will cause a backlash against the oppressors that hasn’t been seen since the founding.Regardless of the propaganda spewed out by network news outlets, many people just changed their plans and either drove or used another means to travel for the Thanksgiving holiday. Unconfirmed reports of scanners being turned off at major airports are coming from everywhere. Exclusive video – Dont touch my junk – Ft Lauderdale opt out & Atlanta Airport Delta terminal Lockdown

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPo8R79lQ6Q

I only caught the Security Warning/lockdown in the terminal on video upon exiting the flight. This was the audio security warning passengers were greeted with upon exiting the flight. “Attention please, attention please, relocate to a safe area within the building near a safe exit and await further instructions, do not use elevators.” Atlanta terminal lock down and security warning story. I asked the only TSA person present if this alarm was due to the medical emergency that took place half way through the e flight on the plane, she said, I don’t think so. I asked if this was a drill, she said she did not think so, BUT “if I see people running then you know it is hitting the fan”. If this is what our millions of stimulus have accomplished we are indeed in deep trouble. My story and another passengers on Ft Lauderdale Airport Opt Out: Even though you are supposedly picked out randomly, both myself and Pat, another passenger I was traveling with, were both picked out for the x-ray scanner machines. We both opted out and here are our stories. Pat Riot wrote his side of the story @ http://teapartyfortlauderdale.com/news.html My side of the story: The trip started in Ft Lauderdale airport where a TSA agent asked me to walk through the metal detector, I walked through without a beep. I was then lured into one of the x-ray machines. Upon realizing what they were attempting to do I told the TSA agent I refused to be scanned. My opt out was then announced publicly and then by walkie talkie. I was paraded to a small roped off area for pat down. I must admit my TSA assaulter was gentle compared to the horror stories I have read about to date. I say assaulter because it is truly a assault on the 4th Amendment. The process took 2-4 minutes and after what I assume was some kind of chemical test I was told I was free to go. The event left me wondering why this violation of my 4th Amendment right was needed. If 100% of the past terrorist were muslim; why is the TSA barking up the wrong tree. Why is it everyone must suffer for the ignorance of a few? I think every day should be National Opt out day. I think the TSA should implement Israeli security features and only x-ray those who fit the profile. To think they are allowing muslim women to actually do self pat downs is a insult and proves this has nothing to do with security. Shame on all of us sheep for allowing it. Call your politicians about the DREAM ACT and tell them no Amnesty. Communicate to them you feel the TSA is presently violating your 4th Amendment rights in regards to unusual search and seizure. I am no attorney and I could prove without a reasonable doubt that a 4 year old to be x rayed and patted down is unreasonable. Opt out America and take pictures or video before and after the security area as to not violate the law but document the violation of the 4th amendment to possibly be used in future civil court cases. Regards, Jay Paine

People who were fine with the Patriot Act under Bush who are outraged now and those who are cool with everything now with Obama as President but were not happy about it under Bush … you are BOTH wrong. ANY current administration is temporary, but the power they grab control of will be permanate. Even if you don’t mind it today, you don’t know who the next person in power will be. THAT is the issue. If you would not want the person you dislike the most to have these powers and control over your life, then NO ONE should have them. This is the fundemental issue that no one ever mentions. The airlines don’t have to cooperate with the TSA screening and they could provide their own security. That security cannot enforce airline ‘rules’, only their policies. The TSA is a federal agency enforcing federal rules. The airlines have options. They could refuse to operate.

American’s have proven to be soft, weak and ineffective. With no moral aptitude to stand up on principal when it really matters. Though the timing of such a plan could not of been worse. In theory the busiest day would seem likely to be best. But in the end the shame by our fellow sheep to keep the lines moving so thanksgiving was not wrecked for millions of people was the reason for failure. This was not an accident. But a well played plan set up by the govt. Knowing history will let you see the set up. People in general will not spend hundreds to thousands of dollars to be stuck at the airport if they have anything to say about it. The choice of get in the oven or go home being backed up by an inconvenienced and uninformed public is the way govt. gets conformity. Have yet to see the mass revolution that ushers in clean up. Only when they are certain that you agree with them will you be set free with your chip. Well, not you. With all the media attention, they closed most of the “backside scanners” or whatever they are called. Probably partly too make those “opt out” people look foolish, and partly because those scanners take twice as long anyway. But like someone else said, more people drove than normally would. That is the true “opt out”.

From the words of Senator Ron Paul,
“If we tolerate this,” Paul said, “there’s something wrong with us.” He added that the American people deserve to be humiliated and demeaned by the government if they refuse to stand up and resist.
I feel the same way. If people are too spineless and cowardly to resist, they had just better shut up and not whimp and whine and complain. Those who are strong cannot fight everybody else’s battles.
I hope that most of them did find other ways of travel.

These same sheep will be the ones that will want you to help them when the government comes to get them. There will always be people who are completely clueless. That is how Obama got elected anyway. A man who never held a real job in his life and campaigned longer than he actually was in the Senate and bam lets make him President. Anyone who gives up their liberty for security deserve neither.

you can sure tell the sheeple who are the obama democrats, they love these sexual assault gropings by obama’s thugs, and they screamed like hell when PRESIDENT Bush’s mild TSA measures asked them to remove their shoes.

AMERICANS do NOT like to surrender their 4th AmendmentRights to obama’s gropings and gate-rape scans by the TSA.
AMERICANS know the Feds are Saving those naked scans of our bodies and we know those scans ARE identified. the hands-on gropings are just soros nazi tactics to demean, disgrace, humiliate and disrobe AMERICANS into submission.

these TSA victims are White Americans, innocent children, the elderly, our veterans, 12 yr old girls, and these cancer survivors, these are the innocent singled out and pulled into the public humiliation by the TSA obama thugs and deviates to make it a point that others might be.. it is micro-aggression against law-abiding innocent AMERICANS.

I say: As a nearly 70 year old, and serverly disabled I just returned from Tenn. I was treated with respect and the most trouble I had was removing my shoes and lifting my feet. I told the agent, who gladly helped me. I spoke up and said I had total hip replacements and two plates and indicated where they were. I was back in my wheelchair with my shoes on AND TIED within 6 mins. Now, If I can do it ANYONE can……

I say: NO, they don’t keep the scans and they are NOT identified. More listening to your glorious leader. They are deleted immediately,…and how are they identified, the agent only has your boarding pass long enough to glance at the name. The other agent taking the scan has NO idea who the person is…. DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW UNEDUCATED YOU SOUND?

While the screenings used by the TSA are regrettably invasive, the failure of the Right to construct a meaningful protest show how far their rhetorical power has fallen now that the midterm elections have ended! Their pitiful “Tea Party” candidates will sell out within the first six weeks of their term! The only choice for America is – progress!

May the Revolution bring everlasting socialism!

Hey Heraldo. Angry much??? How does that crow taste. Just so happens that all of the tea party people I know decided it would be wrong to ruin other people’s holiday and decided that opting to DRIVE instead of flying was a better message. Of course there will always be some that just enjoy protesting (liberals come to mind here) and will do it just to get some attention. Oh, and BTW, Chavez called and said he has room for you down in Venezuela.. They love slavery too!

Just because a bunch of frequent fliers WANT TO DRIVE DRUNK, doesn’t mean the rest of us have to be in the car.

The TSA backed off and stopped naked photos in many airports. That was success, but… some people want to keep on drivin’ drunk, but as long as we know you ARE drunk, we choose to opt out.

That’s because the people who were calling for the “Opt-out” weren’t going to be flying. Analogous to the terrorists who send children out strapped with bombs, but they would never do it themselves. Anyway, opting out won’t be an option for much longer. Communists always take two steps forward and one step back.

From what I understand they chose to “select” much fewer people for their scans and hand jobs. I would say that is why people didn’t “opt out” they didn’t have to.

This whole debate shows the absolute hypocrisy of Democrats. They whined when Bush pushed, by comparison, extremely small measures. Now that they are committing absolute atrocities on little children and elderly Americans, the Democrats are in complete agreement. There can only be one conclusion: DEMOCRAT = PROFOUNDLY IGNORANT. Fashizzle! You have to admit, any group that re-elects Hank Johnson (Guam may become so overly populated that it may tip over and capsize), can’t be taken seriously. I mean, their leader thinks there are 57 states for god’s sake. Oh don’t get me started, I’ll be citing examples all night. I’ll just let their words speak for themselves …

Ah ha! A closet liberal who won’t actually show their face, but blogs instead to antagonize the conservatives. Good try, but I do not believe it will work because we ARE A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH NOW and you’d better get used to it. In fact, I‘d say you probably aren’t even a real American but either have a green card or are here illegally to create havoc, such as a someone from south of our borders who is uneducated and ill-advised. Your friend George Soros and the rest of those creepy people, will get their just reward soon enough. But for now, I do believe you are the loser and you are just on this board to bring people down. I DO BELIEVE THE QUALITY OF PEOPLE ON THIS BOARD, WHO ARE CONSERVATIVE, ARE MUCH MORE INFORMED AND INTELLIGENT ENOUGH to blow you away just slightly breathing and I SERIOUSLY DOUBT YOU COULD DO ANYTHING TO BRING THEM DOWN BECAUSE ‘UNITED WE STAND’ AND WE ARE ALL STANDING VERY, VERY TALL THESE DAYS now that Conservatives are running the House. In other words, in case you need me to explain that, is WE ARE NOT BUYING YOUR NEGATIVITY nor are we believing that anything has been lost. I’d say to you, come back in 100 years and try your socialism then, cause it ain’t working anymore in this country. Let me guess, you are getting government assistance and you just don’t want to give up the freebies so you come on this board to put down us, capitalism, conservatives, and anything else you can because you have nothing else to do – LIKE A REAL JOB. Go on, do your thing, but I will just bet you at the end of the day, when you lay your head down on the pillow, every word you uttered that was anti-freedom (our GOD-given right to choose) will be counted against you by the Almighty and you will have to explain that on your day of Judgment. Good luck with that man. And, you cannot take it back. Again, good luck with that. Terrible thing to have a conscience, isn’t it? Do you have one?

Fizzle is not the right word. Manipulated is the word I would use. If I were TSA and I wanted it to look like people were not challenging the policy, I would reduce the number of people selected for screening. This way I can control the protest line.
