Ala. Lawmakers Apologize to Black Woman Raped by White Men 67 Years Ago

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama Legislature has officially apologized to an elderly black woman who was raped nearly seven decades ago by a gang of white men as she walked home from church.
The Senate gave final approval Thursday on a voice vote to a resolution that expresses “deepest sympathy and deepest regrets” to Recy Taylor, now 91 and living in Florida. She told The Associated Press last year that she believes the men who attacked her in 1944 are dead but that she still wanted an apology from the state of Alabama.
The House approved the resolution last month. It now goes to Gov. Robert Bentley, who said Thursday he’s not personally familiar with details of the case, but sees no reason why he wouldn’t sign it.
Reached by phone Thursday by the AP, Taylor said she welcomed the Legislature’s action.
“I think that’s nice,” she said. “It’s been a long time. I’m satisfied.”
The resolution by Democratic state Rep. Dexter Grimsley of Newville says the failure to prosecute the men was “morally abhorrent and repugnant.” He has said police bungled the investigation and harassed Taylor, and local leaders recently acknowledged that her attackers escaped prosecution in part because of racism.
The AP does not typically identify victims of sexual assault but is using her name because she has publicly identified herself.
Taylor was 24 when she was confronted by seven men who forced her into their car at knife- and gun- point and drove her to a deserted grove of trees where six of the men raped her in Abbeville in southeastern Alabama. She was then left on the side of the road in an isolated area.
Two all-white, all-male grand juries refused to indict the suspects after the attack. Recy Taylor’s brother, 74-year-old Robert Corbitt, said law enforcement authorities tried to blame the attack on his sister. He said his family was threatened after the attack, his sister’s house was firebombed and his father had to guard the house.
“I’m so glad they (the Legislature) decided to do the right thing,” Corbitt said.
Corbitt said Taylor is in poor health, but he hopes she will come back to Abbeville by Mother’s Day in May. Grimsley said he hopes to present her with a copy of the resolution at that time.
Taylor said officials in Abbeville expressed regret that she was not present earlier this year when her hometown issued an apology in the case.
“Since I wasn’t there, they said they should‘ve had somebody on the phone to let me know that they were sorry about the length of time that it’s been,” she said. “I don’t even know what they said. They said they did the wrong thing.”
Taylor has returned to Abbeville frequently since moving to Florida more than 30 years ago and said she expects to visit her brother there next month. She is not sure she will feel differently now that the town has apologized.
“A lot of people have gone on,” she said. “There’s nobody to fear there now.”
There was no opposition to the resolution in the Legislature and no debate in the Senate before Thursday’s vote.
“The family deserves someone to say that was a tragedy and the lady was done wrong,” said Republican Sen. Scott Beason of Gardendale, chairman of the Rules Committee that asked the Senate to approve the resolution.
Democratic Sen. Billy Beasley, whose district includes Abbeville, said Taylor wanted an apology and the Senate wanted to provide one.
“The state of Alabama apologizes for the incident that occurred to Mrs. Taylor many years ago, and we wish God’s speed for her and continued best wishes,” Beasley said.
Grimsley said the apology shows Alabama officials were able to do the right thing on a racial matter.
“I think it’s going to take things like this for the state to move forward” from the racial turmoil of the past, he said.
Grimsley said he pushed the apology through the Legislature for Taylor.
“I just knew I had to do something for her while she’s still here,” he said.
Taylor’s story, along with those of other black women attacked by white men during the civil rights era, is told in “At the Dark End of the Street,” a book by Danielle McGuire, a professor at Wayne State University in Detroit. Activists including Rosa Parks took up the causes of Taylor and others, but their efforts were later overshadowed by other civil rights battles.

Read the story. Read the truth of History at that time. She was raped by a group of men & the “justice system” in power in those days treated her like an animal. I’m glad she got some justice with the apology for the injustice committed against her.

I’m not sure what a “ghool” is but maybe it is something like a “ghoul?“ What does ”degregated” mean? What is “assulted?“ You also misspelled ”truely“ and ”man kind.”
I always let one or two typos go, but this is ridiculous. You need to get to bed before your parents find out you are awake.
The content of your post is pure emotional argument. Here are the FACTS (not that they matter):
* Two separate Grand Juries failed to indict
* The alleged rape is yet to be proven
* Grand Juries fail to indict often, it happens every day, it is the essence of our Common Law jury system. Grand Juries must not rubber-stamp their True Bills. It means there was lack of evidence.
* Allegations of “racism” have not been proven
* The Alabama legislature back then had no part in the procedings
* The Alabama legislature of today had no part in the procedings
* The people who “apologised” have done nothing wrong
Conclusion: This is more race-hustling by the black community and tap-dancing by politicians. It is foul with mendacity and it is an embarassment to the state of Alabama to be cowed in this way.

(no Whites colonized 99% of Africa, that is why it is still poverty, disease, mud huts and bare feet and GOATS.) … it is all about the total destruction of white America, even tho the black majority does not understand= if whites do not WORK there is no tax money to redistrubute to them every month and there is no FOOD from the hardworking white farms to go into the STORES where the food stamps and welfare checks get cashed.

I feel every person that rapes or assaults someone should pay dearly and I know how bad it hurts to see someone guilty walk free, but if a person accused is innocent then that is just as bad. Many child rapist are walking free, especially if it was the first offense and many children are too young to fully explain what happened to them. They do not convict on heresay, but proof only.

After first conceding that we, as White persons, are not true ‘Americans’ in the sense that we originated from Europe and migrated (forcibly stole land in the process) and began a ‘new’ civilization here. Therefore, we must look back through all European history for the debauchery you speak of in this comment section. And would you look at that… we have quite a history of enslaving, scorning, and becoming down right violent against those of differing races.
Let all those without sin… cast the first stone…
You people making the ‘how about apologies for blah blah blah’ me sick… and I hope you have to experience what this lady went through at some point. Perhaps then, and only then, will the veil be lifted from your biggoted eyes and see the world for what it is. Evil is everywhere, in all cultures, and to make a violent crime into a political football is downright deplorable.

Talk about racist the comments about ethiopia alone… wow. Did anyone see 60 Minutes last week? Beckett Brennan, a female basketball player, was gang raped by three black basketball players at the University of the Pacific in California. The local police told her she basically had no chance of a conviction and to use the school to adjudicate the matter. 2 of the players were back on scholarship within a year. Will the state of California apologise? How about for letting OJ Simpson go free? No they won‘t apologise and they shouldn’t. Juries aren‘t perfect but it’s the best thing we’ve got.
This is complete and utter B.S. This is antithesis to the jury system. This is about a public “whipping” of white people YET AGAIN.
According to the FBI’s own crime statistics, black men are three times more likely to rape than “white” men. And you know what? Their definition of “white” includes Mestizos. If you exclude Spanish-speaking Mestizos, the proportion of black to white rape (and all crime) is much higher.
State legislators who have nothing to do with these cases have no reason to apolotise and it is therefore a hollow apology anyway. Only race hustlers who blame whites for all their own peoples’ failings should apologise for covering up the truth. Al “******” Sharpton should apologise for distorting the truth about race in this country, as should the rest of the media-whores!

Ha! What a load of crapola. If they sincerely meant this so-called apology and sincerely wanted to “do the right thing on a racial matter” they‘d have flown her back ’home’ from Florida themselves, put her up in a beautiful hotel suite, paid all her expenses for food and whatever else she desired, and personally presented her with the resolution immediately instead of waiting for her to ‘hopefully’ make her way back at some time in the future. It would have cost them next to nothing compared to what they spend on themselves each and every month of the year.

She’s happy with it and thats fine, but a State should not apologize for crimes of its citizens no matter what the color. Thats called collective justice or salvation. Since they no apologized on behalf of the citizens of that State, should now the citizens themselves (those who are white) also apologize. See where this goes? No where down a road of guilt and shame for those who had nothing to do with this crime against her.
Obama then should apologize to this nation for the hatred of his people that he has turned loose on all of us in the name of collective salvation. Where ya goin with that blade Sam? I’m gonna git me some collective salvation. We are doomed for this kind of thinking. Its Hitlers Germany part Two.
