Alan Colmes Called Out for ‘Cheap Shot’ Comments About How Santorum Dealt With Death of Baby

Lowry Calls Out Alan Colmes for Mocking Death of Santorums Baby

National Review Editor Rich Lowry and Liberal commentator Alan Colmes clashed on Fox News Monday when Lowry interjected to rebuke Colmes’ criticism of the way Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum and his wife handled the death of their infant newborn Gabriel, who lived for only two hours in 1996.

“I even think some of the dastardly characters we have in the main stream media are not going to go as low as you just have Alan,” Lowry said at one point.

The heated rhetoric began early on in the segment when Colmes said undecided voters will ultimately not stick with the surging Santorum once people “get a load of some of the crazy things he’s said and done, like taking his two-hour-old baby when it died right after child birth home and played with it so that his other children would know that the child was real.”

The incident Colmes is referring to was described in a 2005 New York Times Magazine profile on Santorum by Michael Sokolove as follows:

“The childbirth in 1996 was a source of terrible heartbreak — the couple were told by doctors early in the pregnancy that the baby Karen was carrying had a fatal defect and would survive only for a short time outside the womb. According to Karen Santorum’s book, ‘Letters to Gabriel: The True Story of Gabriel Michael Santorum,’ she later developed a life-threatening intrauterine infection and a fever that reached nearly 105 degrees. She went into labor when she was 20 weeks pregnant. After resisting at first, she allowed doctors to give her the drug Pitocin to speed the birth. Gabriel lived just two hours.

What happened after the death is a kind of snapshot of a cultural divide. Some would find it discomforting, strange, even ghoulish — others brave and deeply spiritual. Rick and Karen Santorum would not let the morgue take the corpse of their newborn; they slept that night in the hospital with their lifeless baby between them. The next day, they took him home. ‘Your siblings could not have been more excited about you!’ Karen writes in the book, which takes the form of letters to Gabriel, mostly while he is in utero. ‘Elizabeth and Johnny held you with so much love and tenderness.’ Elizabeth proudly announced to everyone as she cuddled you, ‘This is my baby brother, Gabriel; he is an angel.’ ”

Lowry called Colmes’ description of the ordeal and bringing it up “a cheap shot.”

“To take something that is that personal and that hurtful as losing a child and mocking it like that … that is beneath you, Alan,” he said. “What you’re saying is contemptable.”

    To say this story makes me angry, is an understatement. How coarse, mean and cruel can you be!!?? Alan Colmes has really taken crass political commentary and personal attacks to a new low. These parents tried to turn their family’s loss into a teachable and perhaps even spritiual time for their children. Regardless, of whether you or anyone elase would have made the decision to treat the baby’s death this way, they chose to deal with it in this way, & who is Colmes or anyone esle to judge?? I guess the Santorums would have been far less ghoulish if they had aborted the baby once they learned of the defect and thrown it in the trash! Shame on you Mr. Colmes. You have always given me the willies, anyhow!!

He seems to be getting worse.
      That being said, again, like another poster stated, there are many people who have “wake” services done in their own home. I imagine what Rick S. did was not any different from that. I further guarantee it was not “playing with the baby” as Colmes so callously stated. He states it as if the Santorum family put the baby in the car seat like a live child and happily went home. There is no way on God’s Green Earth that this is how it happened. The worst part is that Colmes just keep beating and beating at the story. I bet it was so painful for the family to do this and I bet further that this was a major part in beginning to heal from the pain. Wrong move Colmes…very very wrong!

Attacking their down syndrome child, then to say that their 13 year old daughter was having sex with A-rod, attacking their son for serving in the military, saying that Sarah was the mother of her granddaughter, now to attack the dead children of a Republican family. It makes me cry. Taking the baby home was a suggestion of the NICU unit. It is a hard thing to lose a child, but to have that child attacked by these monsters is way beyond the pale.       I understand this. As strange as it is to some people. I spent time with my mom after she passed. I talked to her and said good-bye. Everyone handles grief in their own way, there is no wrong way. It is a personal and private time that should remain just that, personal and private. The comment was in poor taste and only shows the progressive mindset for what it is.

      Pamela, I agree completely. There are actually many videos on Youtube were people share their pictures and videos of their lost babies. They hold them, dress them for some pictures and have their own personal way of saying goodbye and want to have pictures to remember them by. These babies are loved and apart of their family from the moment they find out their pregnant….. People like Colmes don’t have the mental capacity to understand this…….

    That was cheap shot by Alan. People deal with death and grief of a love one differently and needs to be repected. It was there way of finding some closure for the rest of the family by not having there kids wondering for years about their sibling. Kids can be sensitive to death especially when it happens at a time when its suppose to be a joyous celebration of birth. It can affect them negatively if there isn’t closure and not having some of the questions answered. The Santorums did what they felt was appropriate for there family. Although I wouldnt bring my deseased child home I would have my children come to the hospital to hold him and say goodbye.

      When my wife miscarried, the hospital wanted to take the body and “dispose of it”. We said no, and we took our already-named baby home, held a proper funeral service with just family and a few friends, and had the local funeral home cremate her and place her in an urn, which sits labeled with her name to this day on a special shelf at home.

      When we explained what the urn was to her siblings when they became old enough to understand, tears were shed by all for our family’s loss of their sister, who now lives in the light of God’s glory. The whole process granted closure to my wife and me. Many of those we know who hadn’t thought of doing something similar have remarked that they wish they had done something like that.

      So I completely understand why the Santorum’s – perennial defender’s of the right to life, would do what they did. Those who have never experienced a loss like that and haven’t had such closure could never understand the depth of it. They are certainly not in a position to judge the method of mourning of those who value that little baby’s life to such an extent. Every child is a person bearing the image of God, just like the rest of us. And they ought to be treated as such both before and after their death.

      My point is to expose the left-wing progressiveness in the Jewish culture, and the out of proportional influence this small group has in changing what we, as a society, are. Jews are ethnocentric extremophiles. Jews are not inclusive, they are exclusive.
