Alan Dershowitz: ‘Should Israel Welcome Glenn Beck’s Support?’

Beyond his renown as an attorney, Alan Dershowitz is known for his firm commentary on the Arab-Israeli conflict.  And now he has focused his analysis on Glenn Beck’s week of events in Israel.

His blog post is entitled, “Should Israel Welcome Glenn Beck’s Support?”

At a time when old friends and allies who should be supporting the Jewish state are abandoning it in droves, Beck’s willingness to stand up for Israel must be accepted with gratitude. I, for one, do not question his motives. I believe they are genuine. One need not accept all of Beck’s positions on Israel—and I certainly do not—in order to agree with him that support of Israel is one of the great moral issues of the 21st Century.

Those who thoughtlessly attack Israel no matter what it does and thoughtlessly defend Israel’s enemies regardless of what they do, are making peace far more difficult. They incentivize terrorism by Israel’s enemies and disincentivizes compromise on all sides.

I will wait to hear precisely what Glenn Beck says during his visit to Israel before I evaluate it. Just as I feel free to criticize the Israeli government when I think it is wrong, I certainly feel free to criticize defenders of Israel when I think they are wrong. But I will not prejudge Beck until he is given a full opportunity to express his views.

I certainly admire Beck’s decision to go to Israel far more than the decision of so many so-called artists and intellectuals who call for a boycott against the Jewish state without even bothering to go there and see for themselves. I welcome the support of religious Christians who love Israel for religious reasons. I abhor the ignorant and misguided efforts of other Christians, such as Jimmy Carter and Desmond Tutu, who misuse their faith against the Jewish state. I hope that more Christians will follow in Beck’s footsteps and take the time to visit Israel. They will see Christianity thriving in Israel while at the same time being dismantled and destroyed in Lebanon, in Gaza, in Egypt, and in other areas in which Islamic fundamentalists have taken over. Christian religious sites are preserved in Jerusalem and other areas under Israeli control. When the Jordanian government controlled parts of Jerusalem, it destroyed many historic religious sites sacred to both Jews and Christians.

      I am not a big of fan of socialist-progressive, J-Street shill, Alan Dershowitz. But in time when Israel is isolated (in part due to our “aid” that restrict Israel on trading with China, Russia, Brazil, etc.) any support is welcomed.

      All his life Alan Dershowitz worked to bring socialist-progressive values to USA and Israel and those values (along with both party support for endless wars) made those both country weaker. As a strong believer that USA should not force Israel out of Suez in 1950′s I think Kahane was right all along.

    Mr. Dershowitz‘s points on Glenn and team’s journey like the support of Israel being “one of the great moral issues of the 21st century”, is a good reflective statement. Mr. Dershowitz may have history of many controversies, but let‘s try to see some good where ’the good’ is stated so often in his article here. Let’s not overdose on the angry pill in total thought.

      His comments were fair and balanced assessment from his perspective. Israel has been duped more than a few times so it’s not unusual to witness cautious skepticism. Only a fool would not take Glenn’s word and test them or prove out what he says is right or wrong. It’s what the bible calls for…Glenn’s actions and words follow scripture…and for that I applaud him greatly.

      Glenn, will keep it on the up and up and they will come to love him for his love of Israel. Glenn has never had a hidden agenda and that is what confounds people. The truth pierces the heart all me men and they tend to resist the truth for a certain amount of time…

      Government’s are not standing up for Israel, the PEOPLE are standing up for Israel and that is something we have never witnessed before that I know of…

      Me thinks our Government is is deep kimchi.

      As for me and my family we will worship God and have stood with Israel since 1997. We will continue to pray for Israel.

    So Beck is in Israel for his own salvation. Hmmm. Could he be there because God told him he had to go? We are given instructions to do things now and again in our lives. And I believe he received this message. As to why is Israel just taking care of itself and not cleaning up Africa? As if all the other countries in the world are already on board with the Africa project. Oh and if you used your eyes and ears instead of your mouth you would be able to find that indeed Israel has many projects in African countries that it is running and supporting. I think for as small as it is and with the troubles at home they are stepping up a lot more than others.

    I also believe Beck’s intentions are authentic & sincere; I also believe he does this to ensure his salvation as well as all others who believe in the Christian Faith.

    If I were a non-Christian (including Jews) I might thank him for his sincerity but wonder “what about me?”

    I don’t pre-judge Beck on this but I hope he confesses his heart & addresses all his motivations so more will know what is in his heart.

You can thank your favorite Prez, O, as this all started when O decided the US would not be supporting Israel during his tenure! Most of us who are Christian realize how vital Israel to the people of God and the United States! If you do not worship, that would mean nothing to you, but I was raised differently and was expected to embrace the Jewish religion as they are a vital part of Christianity! Glenn has done some marvelous work and this visit to Israel is amazing as WE SUPPORT AND STAND WITH ISRAEL—you make your own choice–I have and I will stand with Israel!

    Its good to see some Jewish people realize this is not a game. Many NY, Bronx liberal Jewish people think the Holocaust could never happen again so they play politics with the issue. As a Christian I must be humble enough to realize I am capable of any sin except for the grace of God. Liberals just don’t get it. I believe Christians would stand up even if it was people we disagree with being persecuted or slaughtered. For example if it happened to gay people who I disagree with I and real Christians would stand up and fight for them. People deserve to be treated as human beings even if we disagree.

      Nothing that you typed could be further from the truth. Do all jews think what you said. No. do most? No you see jews are liberal because they are liberal just like liberal christians (both black and white) and btw there are also Jewish conservatives (I’m one of many) who are conservative for mostly the same reasons as christians bith black and white are conservative. Among practicing or orthodox jews the percentage that are conservative is much higher. It seems the more jewish you are the more you lean to the right as judaism is a moral religon and people to the right are more moral. The assimilated jews who do not generally practice their religon or have it as a priority are generally liberal so it seems the less jewish you are the more likely to be to the left. So please don’t paint Jews with such a broad brush.
      Jews do not look down at goyim any more than we look down at our fellow jew. To jews A respectable person is a respectable person and a degenerate person is a degenerate person regardless of religon.
      Regarding unfair trade what the heck are you talking about I believe Israel buys much more from the US than she sells to the US. and that is with a population 1/30th the size. So there are no unfair trade agreements.
      Most jews don‘t look down at gentiles simply because they’re gentiles. But it seems thee are plenty of people like Pigpen who will look down on jews simply because we are jews.

    I remember Glenn saying that we need to focus on our similarities and not our differences. His reaching out is accomplishing that. To some who feel that there is no middle ground for liberals and conservatives, Jews and Christians, rich and poor, then they have not looked too deeply (or wish to remain in their battles – be it mental, emotional or spiritual).

    Glenn is taking a huge step and showing everyone that good can be reached by finding that common thread.

      I hope christians remain in muslim countries-christians are arabs too and belong there.I’d like to see arab jews return there too.They are mistreated in israel by the dominent european and american jews. We shall see what we shall see.I’m not going to say however that out of fear that christians get oppressed- muslims should live under brutal dictators. And christian persecution is a result of western colonialism which priveleged the christians over the muslims and tfollowed and of course the americasn invasion of iraq where christians allied themselves with the invaders to curry favor. There is no attempt at assimilation, only take-over through the supposed great equalizer of politically correct thinking and talk. Please don’t cry a river about percentages who are radical vs moderate, as the moderates imply their agreement through silence.

      You do not know what you are talking about. You need to learn more about the history of dhimmitude, i.e. Muslims persecution and brutal treatment of Christians and Jews as well as the desecration of Christian and Jewish places. This brutal treatment is ancient, from about 675A.D. and continues to this day.

Perhaps Elijah ran into this before on Mt Carmel. Remember what he did. The option is clear, we all know it, but no one will say it.

      2 tenths of 1% of the world is Jewish yet somehow they have been awarded 22% of the Nobel Prizes between 1901-2010
      Jews make up .16 of 1 % of the US populoation but are 36% of the nobel prize winners. And this is from a people that in every generation someone has risen up to try and destroy them yet somehow despite not having a homeland for 2,000 years they still survived
